"I am an A&E doctor - these are the five things I'll never do"

  • last month
An A&E doctor has revealed the five things he would never do - including riding a motorbike and eating leftover food that's been out too long.

Arthur Joustra, 25, started working as an A&E doctor at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham in June, 2022 and has seen his fair share of illness and injuries.

Arthur has fixed injuries people have sustained while cycling without a helmet or while using power tools without eye protection.

He has shared his list of activities he'd avoid at all costs - to prevent having to see a doctor if things went wrong.

His list includes not going abroad for surgery, avoiding climbing in inappropriate footwear and steering clear of drugs.

00:00These are five things I would never do having worked in the emergency
00:03department as a doctor. Number one is climbing any kind of hike or mountain in
00:08flip-flops or inappropriate footwear in general to be honest. Now I'm not talking
00:12about walking your dog in the park I'm talking about hikes and mountains you
00:15know we've all been up Snowdon. Fairly easy walk but you have to have good
00:18footwear there's always that one bloke wearing flip-flops he's just begging for
00:21an open ankle fracture just just don't do it. Number two is motorbiking now I
00:26mean you can do it you've got to have some fun in life but please wear
00:29appropriate equipment. I'm talking helmet I'm talking pads on every joint
00:33in your body, leathers please don't go out in jeans and a t-shirt in a
00:38competition between you and the ground the ground will win. Number three we're
00:43just gonna keep it simple drugs like it might sound obvious coming from a doctor
00:46but don't do drugs the amount of things I've seen with arrhythmias, heart attacks
00:51death just awful side effects of them you don't know what's in them there's only
00:55one way to be safe it's just to kind of avoid them just completely. Now this
01:00fourth one I would never have done before being a doctor anyway but a lot
01:04of people do it so I think it's important to include it's eating leftover
01:07food that's not been in the fridge overnight or has been out for like hours
01:11I'm talking takeouts that you leave on the side at 2 in the morning you wake up
01:15hungover and then maybe lunchtime you think oh that kebabs kind of tempting
01:18don't okay the amount of people who come in with campylobacter, salmonella, e-coli
01:23infections and they're just oh it's always awful horrible the diarrhea the
01:28vomiting just if it's been out of the fridge for more than an hour put it in
01:31the bin. Number five does have a few provisos but it is to not go abroad to
01:37have surgeries particularly if they're for aesthetic reasons a lot of people do
01:41go away to have a tummy tuck or a boob job or a nose job abroad and now there
01:47are some hospitals where this will be absolutely fine they'll have very
01:49well-trained professionals they'll do a fantastic job and they'll give you the
01:52appropriate aftercare however there's a lot particularly if it's a lot cheaper
01:57than it would cost privately in this country where you're not getting the
01:59appropriate aftercare sometimes I've had patients who have been on the plane the
02:03same day of their procedure or the next day the risks for that particularly if
02:08it's a six seven hour flight, DVTs, PEs, just awful infections in general if it
02:14seems really cheap and a bit too good to be true it probably is if in doubt
02:18always consult your regular doctor before going abroad for procedures and
02:22that's it really it's plenty more stuff I wouldn't do so follow along and maybe
02:26I'll do a part two. These are five things that I would never do as a doctor having
02:29worked in the emergency department part two. Number one is for all you passenger
02:33princesses please stop sitting like this in the front seat of a car firstly no
02:37one wants to see your feet when they pull over at a red light but secondly if
02:40you do crash and the airbags go off it's gonna fold you in half like yesterday's
02:43laundry just feet down. The second one is safety glasses if you do insist on
02:48using power tools always use protection
02:53number three is trampolines as you can see this is not a trampoline because
02:57they're lethal so I won't have one they fold your body into positions that are
03:00not meant to be in and you can sizably see an increase in emergency department
03:03admissions when a new trampoline park opens up in the area. As an aside I would
03:07generally also recommend avoiding standing on garden furniture. On a
03:12gorgeous British day like this you're probably gonna want a barbecue but if
03:15you're not versed in barbecuing a big joint of meat that looks like it's come
03:18off the leg of Dwayne the Rock Johnson don't start small burgers sausages and
03:23work your way up all you're gonna be cooking is slow-cooked salmonella. Last
03:28but certainly not least is skiing beyond your competencies now I would never tell
03:32someone to not ski as it's one of the greatest loves of my life however it
03:35goes green blue red black once you're competent on the green work up don't do
03:40a green and think you can do the Grand Couloir it's not happening and you will
03:43be airlifted down. Here's one I made earlier when I took my fiance on a blue
03:46run way before she was ready. Like and follow for more and I'll see what the
03:50dangerous props I could find lying around my parents house
