War Thunder - Patch 1.51 "Cold Steel" Dev server - Tanks!

  • last month
In this episode I take a look at the new tanks being introduced in Patch 1.51, including the new Cold War era/1960's tanks, the Leopard, M-60 and T-10M. However I also take a look at the new WW2 tanks such as the Panzer 35(t), Su-100Y and Super Hellcat!

As with my plane episode, I was unable to test drive any vehicles, but will try to do so the next time the Dev Server is open.

00:00We're going to quickly move on to the army, you know, ground forces, and there's been
00:04quite a few changes here.
00:06Now I'm running out of time so I'm going to have to go through these changes pretty quick,
00:10but we're going to look at the non-premium stuff first in the American tech tree, and
00:15that is with the M60.
00:18The two American tanks are the M60 and the M18 Super Hellcat.
00:23Now the M60 is quite important because it is one of the first 60s tanks, or 1960s tanks,
00:28that we've got in the game.
00:30I believe the other ones are the T-10 and the Leopard 1.
00:34As you can see here it's got pretty good armour, it's only 90mm thick, but because of the angling
00:38it comes out as more around 200mm.
00:41Unfortunately it's got this big weak spot here apparently, which is only 36mm thick,
00:48around the turret ring.
00:49Now it's possible there's more armour behind that, but I can't really... the turret doesn't
00:52seem to stretch down below that, so that's got to be a bit of a weak spot.
00:56The turret itself is pretty weak, 103mm effective thickness, and even the mantlet, the most
01:04thickest part of the tank usually, is only 128mm effective thickness.
01:09Again it may hit the turret behind it, oh yeah it's actually got thicker armour behind
01:14it, so scratch that about the mantlet being not very thick, but the turret I sort of stand
01:20by is that it's not okay angling, but again it's not very well armoured compared to some
01:27of the other tier 5 tanks.
01:30But it makes up for this in the ammo it uses.
01:34Armour piercing discarded sabot, anywhere between 322mm and 267mm at 0 degrees, 30 degrees
01:43anywhere between 314mm and 260mm, and at 60mm anywhere between 125mm and 104mm.
01:50And it gets HESH, High Explosive Squash Head.
01:55The way it works, you fire the shell and it's got explosive inside it, and it squashes onto
02:00the tank and explodes, it's not meant to penetrate the tank, it's meant to create massive amounts
02:05of spalling, which I don't know if spalling is actually in the game at the moment.
02:11Spalling is basically like, your tank shell hits the tank and then it causes bits of the
02:15insides to fly off around the inside of the tank.
02:19And this is okay, it kind of works the same as HEAT, it's a standard, the penetration
02:24doesn't change according to distance, but 130mm at 0 degrees, 112mm at 30, and 64mm
02:33at 60 degrees.
02:35The other ammunition is HEAT FS, High Explosive Anti-Tank Fin Stabilised Shell, and this is
02:40pretty damn lethal, 400mm at 0 degrees, 346mm at 30, and 199mm at 60.
02:50So this should be able to deal with the tier 5 tanks that are in the game at the moment,
02:55I think this will do pretty good this tank.
02:57It's battle rating 7.7, I'm guessing that's a placeholder, there's no way the 1960s tanks
03:02are going to be anywhere below 8, and I really hope they introduce a battle rating 9 or something.
03:08Side RP is 380,000, they haven't actually added turret armour for some reason.
03:16Reloading rate is 10.8 seconds, turret rotation speed is 20.4 degrees a second, so pretty
03:21fast reloading and turret rotation speed.
03:26Max speed is 30mph, so this is a pretty good tank, and it's got 4 crew, driver, commander,
03:32loader and gunner.
03:35Now one bit of armour I did forget about a second ago, is up here, the commander's cupola,
03:42you can see it's only 35mm, or 25mm, yeah I think that's going to be a bit of a weak
03:49spot, because as you can see here, that's where the commander is, so it's attached to
03:52the rest of the tank, shell goes there, explodes, sends shrapnel down here, or you could just
03:57keep shooting there, keep killing whoever replaces the commander, or kill the commander,
04:02maybe he'll get replaced, maybe not, but either way you're killing off one of the crew
04:05and making it less effective.
04:08The other addition is the Super Hellcat, this is basically an M18 with a M36 Jackson turret
04:15on the top, and you can see it's got 5 crew, driver, machine gunner, gunner, loader, commander.
04:23Go to modifications, it gets the standard 90mm shells, they're already in game I believe,
04:29so with APCR 278mm at 500m, 0 degrees, 213 at 30 degrees, 64 at 60, armour, again really
04:40weak hull armour, it's just going to be penetrated easily, ok turret armour, it's got a fairly
04:47thick mantlet, but again at battle range 6.3 anything is going to be able to penetrate
04:51that basically, reloading rate 8 seconds, rotation speed 20.4 degrees a second, maximum
05:02speed 45 miles an hour, what's the speed of the regular Hellcat, can't find it, 45 miles
05:09an hour, so it should do a lot better, it's even got the same reloading rate, I suspect
05:16this may be another placeholder, but we never know, yeah they've even got the same armour,
05:24so actually ignore all that, that's basically a placeholder, we know the turret armour is
05:29a lot thicker than 25mm, again just a double check on the sides where we haven't got that
05:34mantlet skewing the results, yeah 31, so again this is a placeholder, although I'm guessing
05:43the battle rating is less of a placeholder, but again will probably change, or it's got
05:48the placeholder of the M36, so yeah, take from that what you will, with regards to whether
05:57it's a placeholder or not.
05:59Now the other change, or the other additions are in the German tech tree, we've got three
06:04new vehicles, we've got the Panzer 35t, which is a new reserve tank, it's not got much armour,
06:12it's basically the same as the 38t, 25mm maximum at the front, the best it gets is
06:1940mm at this particular area here, but you're just going to aim for the turret, or the main
06:26hull area, and you're just going to penetrate easily, it's got only two crew in the turret,
06:32so commander and loader, and you've got a driver and machine gunner, who's not going
06:36to be much use, so I suppose it's good to have another reserve tank, but it's not going
06:41to be all that good, battle rating 1, turret rotation speed 11.9 degrees per second, reloading
06:49rate 4.3, the ammunition, it's got a slightly worse penetration than the 38t, it gets armour
06:57piercing composite rigid, but 500m, 445mm at 0 degrees, 34 at 30, 10 at 60 degrees,
07:07it's not particularly great, armour piercing ballistic capped is slightly better, but again
07:1246mm, 500m, 0 degrees, 41 at 30, 17 at 60, it's an ok tank for battle rating 1 reserve
07:22tier, but above that it's not going to do that well.
07:26The other new addition is a tier 1 battle rating 1.3 multi-turret tank for the Germans,
07:34which is armed with Draves machine guns, I'm pretty sure they're very old machine guns,
07:38I could be wrong, I don't know why the name just rings a bell.
07:43Very weak armour, again the thickest bit seems to be this sloped area here, which goes to
07:46about 30, other than that, pretty weak, it's a huge tank, it's a massive tank, it's taller
07:57than the T-35 I think, if it isn't longer, I don't think it is longer.
08:03How many crew?
08:041, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, a 6 crew, so standard commander, gunner, loader in the main turret, 2 machine
08:11gunners and a driver, commander is all the way up here, so it looks a bit of an odd position.
08:18What the, I don't even know how to pronounce this, NBFZ or Nümpferfahrerzug, I do apologise
08:25to Germany for the mispronunciation, I've just butchered there.
08:30Like I was saying, the weapons come with pretty good ammo, you've got the HEAT with 80mm penetration
08:36of 69 at 30 degrees, or 39 at 60, you've got the armour piercing capped ballistic, again
08:47decent penetration, 50mm at 0 degrees, 500m, 45 at 30, 18 at 60, 37mm not so great but
08:56it gets armour piercing composite rigid, so decent penetration there.
09:03This seems like it would be a good tank to just roll around in and show off, but I don't
09:09think it would be that effective in combat.
09:11This isn't quite a prototype, they built something like 10 and they were used in Norway, so they
09:16just didn't build many of them because they kind of knew it wasn't going to be that good.
09:20One thing of note is the price, £1750, that's more expensive than the KV-1B at tier 3, and
09:29the same price as the Panzer Bfw 4, yeah that seems a bit overpriced if I'm honest.
09:38But the other major addition is the Leopard 1, now not particularly well armed, and again
09:44they haven't added turret armour for some reason, except at the back, I mean it's got
09:48decent sloping which gives it decent armour, but at tier 5 it's going to be slaughtered.
09:53And again they've put it at 7.7, I'm guessing it's meant to be 8 or higher.
09:57Sorry but my throat's sort of going a bit, I've got a bit of a dry throat.
10:03You can see here it's not particularly great armour, I mean it's just not very good.
10:09But again it has very good ammunition, armour piercing discarded in sabot, 314mm penetration
10:16at 0 degrees, 500 metres, 306 at 30 degrees or 122 at 60, again HESH same penetration
10:25as with the M60, and HEATFS same penetration as with the M60.
10:31So this seems like it would be a shoot and scoot tank, and it's very fast, 41mph, turret
10:37rotation speed 20.4 degrees a second, reloading rate 10.8 seconds, I think this would do decently
10:46well although HESH, I don't know, it doesn't seem to be as good as I thought it would be,
10:52which is a bit of a shame, but I think this tank would do quite well.
10:56You can see this little infrared box up here, I doubt we'll actually get to use that unfortunately.
11:00It's got some mirrors here which, I don't know why, it just seems kind of funny to me,
11:06just seeing some tank with some mundane things such as rear looking mirrors.
11:11So moving on to Russia and they've also got a few new additions.
11:15Again some premiums, some not.
11:17We'll look at the first major addition, the T-10M, it's actually got less armour than
11:27the IS-4 which has 160 at the hull front, again battle rating 8.0, max speed 31mph,
11:35turret rotation speed 10.2 degrees a second, reloading rate 17.3 seconds.
11:42This has I think slightly less effective armour than the IS-4, I believe the IS-4 around
11:48this point has around effective armour of about 240, if we quickly compare, I'll quickly
11:55go to the IS-4, yeah about effective armour 243 around the top just before the driver's
12:06hatch or if you go to the side about effective thickness 260.
12:11The T-10 I don't think ever goes above 230, was it we just had, yeah about 230-240, oh
12:19yeah about 230 if you hit it dead on pretty much.
12:24And it's got less angle, this is 55mm, the IS-4 is 61mm, the turrets, you're not going
12:30to aim at the turret, just forget about penetrating there, it's less angled so I suppose you could
12:35have a chance of the new ammunition but I wouldn't really try it.
12:39The rear is pretty easy to get through, the rear of the hull and the rear of the, or side
12:44of the hull, again quite sloped but not particularly thick, but we'll check the new ammunition
12:51as well because I'm assuming this has got new ammunition, again APBC already got that
12:58but also armour piercing, discarding sabot and heat, oh so it doesn't get as much new
13:03ammunition, high explosive shell with 42mm penetration should be pretty good.
13:08So the APDS, 500m, 0 degrees, 325mm penetration, 317 at 30 degrees and 126 at 60, again it
13:18should be able to deal with the M60, the M60 and Leopard should be able to deal with the
13:22IS-4, they may have a bit more trouble getting through that thick armour but, actually you
13:28could even hit here, yeah this is pretty thin, 157mm effective thickness at 30 degrees, so
13:37this is going to be a bit of a weak spot I think, unless there's armour behind that
13:41which I don't think there is, if we look at the X-Ray, it should be able to punch straight
13:45through to the driver, and there's also a gunner and commander and loader while we're
13:49looking at it, so yeah this seems like a bit of a weak spot, hard to hit but if you do
13:55miss you're just going to hit above here which is still less armour than with the IS-4, so
14:01this is going to be a good tank with a good gun but I don't think it's going to be as
14:05bad as I hear the IS-4 is, I've not actually played against an IS-4 so I don't know for
14:11sure but I do hear they're pretty tough to take out.
14:15Now the next tank is the T-26-4 and oh my god it's a T-26 with a T-28 turret, with ridiculously
14:23thin armour, battle rating 1.3 apparently, although again could be wrong or placeholder,
14:31yeah ridiculously thin armour, driver, loader, gunner, how the hell did they put a turret
14:37on this thing without just flat out crushing it, max speed 90 miles per hour, turret rotation
14:43speed 13.6 degrees a second, reloading rate 5 seconds basically, 5.2, yeah just shoot
14:51this thing anywhere and it's going to blow up, no but it does get pretty good ammo I
14:57think, armour piercing, high explosive, ballistic cap, well it's not the best penetration actually
15:04but I suppose at lower tier 1.3 it's not going to matter, you've got to punch through everything
15:09basically. Check the x-ray, where's the ammo kept on this thing, for a 76mm gun that doesn't
15:17seem to be that big that ammo, maybe it's just me but I suppose you could get a lucky
15:22hit on the tongue in just ammo racket or ammo racket if you're shooting from the front,
15:27so yeah that's the new T-26-4, and the other new tank is the SU-100Y and the T-34-100,
15:37we'll look at the SU-100Y first because this is just, wow, it's just huge, and it's got
15:45a 130mm cannon with a, that's actually a naval cannon I believe, which is just ridiculous,
15:52it's got 60 degree armour all around but because of sloping that can go up to about 120 at
15:58some places, or 130 in some places, turret itself, pretty thick mantlet, 60 degrees at
16:07the front but because of sloping 90, or you could go through the mantlet which is again
16:12pretty thick, 60 degrees, then another 60 degrees, the sides will be easy to penetrate
16:18because it's just a huge slab and same with the rear basically, but from the front this
16:23could be a bit of a problem, possibly, check the ammunition because this is a naval gun
16:29I suspect it would be, oh my god, that is ridiculously good penetration, this is a 122mm
16:38gun but it has 130, I don't know how much stock to actually put in these figures now
16:43because that could quite possibly be wrong, but 500m 0 degrees, 179mm 0 degrees, 162 at
16:5230 or 67 at 60 degrees, pretty good tank, reloading rate 19.1 seconds, turret rotation
17:037 degrees, oh wait this is a turret, is this a turreted vehicle, I don't think it is, I
17:12will have to test this when I get a chance, battle rating 5.3 so it's pretty high up so
17:17I wouldn't worry about encountering this thing, oh we didn't check the crew, no we don't want
17:22to test drive we haven't got much time left, only got like 5 minutes I think, only comes
17:28with 30 ammo so you could possibly run out of ammo if you're lucky, it's got a driver
17:33machine gunner, gunner commander and two loaders and the ammo is pretty much all stacked around
17:40the turret so you should hopefully get lucky, that turret, wow they've got like, wait if
17:48I go round here, that's a weird old vertical aiming drive, horizontal aiming drives down
17:56here at the bottom of the tank, that's going to be a bit of a problem to hit, that's just
18:00a huge old cannon, I mean like I said it's a naval cannon I'm pretty sure, the other
18:05vehicle the T-34-100, I actually thought this was the other T-34-100 built in Egypt
18:11which had a huge old turret, it's just massive but we'll check this out, seems to be pretty
18:19much a T-34-85 but with a bigger turret I think, armour doesn't seem too bad, you know
18:28standard T-34 armour on the whole, from the front the turret armour can be a bit thick
18:34but again you're not really going to be aiming at the turret from the front with these things
18:41because of that huge thick mantlet, from the sides should be easy enough to penetrate,
18:46again it's just a T-34 with a big old gun, although it's got track straps at the back
18:51so that could cause a bit of a problem with the turret, the turret definitely seems to
18:55be the strong point of it armour wise, again three crew, loader, gunner, commander and
19:03a driver, no machine gunner which is good, I can't remember if T-34s usually have a machine gunner
19:13having a bit of trouble remembering, check the ammunition
19:19again pretty good ammunition, it's got a 100mm gun with stock ammo, 188mm
19:25penetration, 500m at 0 degrees, 169 at 30, 68 at 60, not much improved with the
19:35next armour piercing high explosive ballistic shell, APBC, again it doesn't seem too much
19:42improved, barely 10mm over all the ammo, so again seems like a pretty good tank, battle
19:48rating 6, reloading rate 16 seconds, turret rotation speed 21 degrees a second, that's
19:55pretty huge, again this is a pretty good tank and I think it will do pretty well as a premium,
20:00it's not too cheap so you shouldn't have to worry about meeting them very often,
20:05same thing with the SU-100 although that is a bit cheaper, so that's it for the tanks as well,
20:12um how do I feel about the update, um well it's taken the big first step of getting into the 1960s
20:20tanks, we knew this was going to happen, they've made it pretty clear over countless Q&A's and
20:26the developers have made it pretty clear in their own threads where they answer questions that you
20:30know this was going to be happening, uh some of the things like the SU-100 kind of, well I think
20:35we was, I was personally kind of expecting something like that but um things like the
20:39T-34-100 I wasn't, wasn't expecting that T-26-4, the um German, well no the German uh new, I can't
20:47pronounce it, um NBFF said I was kind of expecting although not in this patch, again the Leopard and
20:54the M60 um I was expecting, the T-10 I was also expecting, originally they was going to bring the
21:00Leopard in first and then the T-10 and M60 later but they delayed this, um what was the other
21:05American vehicle, the um it was the Super Hellcat, I can't remember, what someone actually commented
21:12in a previous video I did that this existed and they did say well this should be added and
21:16I didn't think it was going to be added so soon but you know I was aware of the possibility of
21:21it being added, um I think that's pretty much all the new vehicles added, um Panzer 35t we'd
21:27already had confirmed a while back, uh what was I hoping in this, um again I was kind of, I was
21:33hoping but not really expecting news on the British tanks, um I think they're coming at the
21:38end of summer or autumn, um the fall, I'm not sure when that is, that's not a term I usually hear in
21:43the UK, um but I think that's like the end of summer I think, um other changes, um I wasn't
21:50really expecting anything else to be honest, um tank wise at least, um yeah I think that was pretty
21:55much it, um but yeah good addition, some of them seem a bit weird or not needed like the T-26-4 but
22:02yeah I'm pretty happy with the changes they've brought in for ground forces, um I'm hoping they
22:07will introduce a new battle rating, you know a battle rating 9 or something because you know
22:12you shouldn't be having M60s and Leopards and T-10s going against bloody World War 2 designs or
22:19very early post-war designs, well anyway that's um it for today's episode, um hope you enjoyed it,
22:25um if you did leave a like, uh subscribe if you like these sorts of videos, leave feedback,
22:29could always do with more feedback, uh thanks for watching, I'll see you next time.
