00:04CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
00:31Good afternoon and welcome to the Countdown studio.
00:34On the very day that, ten years ago, the great Robert Palmer,
00:38a great songwriter, great singer, passed away.
00:41So, sadly, he's probably best remembered for that great song,
00:45Addicted To Love, in 1986.
00:47And who can forget the video that promoted it,
00:50with all those girls in short dresses and red lipstick
00:53pretending to play their instruments.
00:56And the music video has become an everyday,
01:01major part of the music industry,
01:03and I got to thinking which would be my favourite.
01:05And I always loved Pink Floyd, and I loved their video,
01:09Another Brick In The Wall.
01:11Do you remember that one, or do you have a particular favourite, Rachel?
01:16Well, my dad actually made his way into music video once,
01:20because he went to an FA Cup final that United actually won,
01:24and he sat right behind Sir Alex Ferguson.
01:26And Glory Glory Man United was in the charts that year.
01:29So my dad actually made it onto Top Of The Pops.
01:31Brilliant.
01:32For being in the background of that video.
01:34There's another one as well. Do you know Bonnie Tyler,
01:36Essential Clips Of The Heart?
01:38There's something online called Literal Music Videos.
01:41And do you remember that music video for that?
01:43It's absolutely crazy.
01:45There's a kid with headlights and doves flying everywhere
01:48and weird gymnasts, and it's all really, really bizarre.
01:52And if you go online, you can find someone who's actually sung over it
01:55with literally what's happening in the shots.
01:57How extraordinary.
01:58It's quite good fun.
01:59Excellent stuff.
02:00Fund of information there.
02:02Now then, Rich is back. Rich Greenwood is back with us.
02:05A firefighter from Blackpool.
02:07He beat Taz Booty yesterday, 76-56.
02:11Welcome back.
02:12Welcome back, Rich.
02:13And you're going to be fighting it out with Andy Sheppard,
02:16a community engagement consultant from Featherstone in Pontefract.
02:21Andy's been an active member of the Encore Theatre Company
02:25for 33 years now.
02:27Tell us a little bit about that, Andy.
02:29Well, I started off backstage.
02:33Was soon persuaded to go onstage.
02:36Didn't need much persuading.
02:38And since then, played a variety of roles.
02:41Just recently played Mushnik in Little Shop Of Horrors.
02:44Yes.
02:45Still waiting to be discovered, hopefully, you know, one day.
02:48You're discovered here.
02:49Oh, that's...
02:50You've got no idea the number of theatrical agents
02:52that are absolutely focusing on you at this very minute.
02:55I'm ready.
02:56Excellent stuff.
02:57A big round of applause for Rich and Andy.

10:53Oh, do you know what?
10:55We were so pleased with ourselves for 29 seconds of that round.
10:59I'll just check the spelling.
11:01And it's O-R-S, you need two O's.
11:04You have it with the final E.
11:06And I'm so sorry, cos I'm just thinking...
11:08So what have we ended up with over there?
11:11We could have governed instead.

11:16That's a standstill.

12:44So, any improvements on that? Is it possible?
12:46Yes, Catherine?
12:47We have checked the dictionary this time.
12:49Yes.
12:50We're happy there's a nine.
12:51Excellent. And?
12:52Delations.
12:54Delations. Yeah. Yes, indeed.
12:57So, reports on crimes, reports on offences a long, long time ago.

13:02Yes.
13:07Very good. Well done.
13:0927 plays 15.
13:11Numbers game. Numbers game for Andy.

13:16One from the top row and five from the bottom lot.
13:20And this time the selection is seven,

14:23Times the six by the ten and add it to the 800.
14:26Well done. 860.
14:27Thank you very much. And, Rich?
14:29Slightly more convoluted way.

14:36Times eight.
14:37Times six.
14:38Plus five.

14:42Good stuff, both of you. Well done.
14:44So, 37 plays Andy's 25.
14:47And now it's our chance to talk more to Catherine Granger.
14:51And, Catherine, I was thinking you were studying for a PhD,
14:53but also training.
14:55How do you manage to combine the two?
14:57How many hours training a day in that period leading up to last year's Olympics?
15:02To be honest, it wasn't even the time leading up to the Olympics.
15:05We train for the full four-year cycle.
15:07And it's a full-time job, effectively.
15:09So it's six or seven days a week.
15:11And we start about half past seven in the morning
15:13and finish about half past four in the afternoon.
15:15Really?
15:16Yeah. Pretty much. Relentless.
15:18So I tried to squeeze in my PhD as and when I could.
15:22It's in criminal law, so our dilations and our governors,
15:26it's very relevant to my prison studies.
15:29Yes.
15:30But I had a very, very strict supervisor who was never –
15:33the good thing, in a way, for me, she wasn't really –
15:36she didn't really know much about sport.
15:38She wasn't really interested in sport for a long time.
15:40And I was terrified of her, so I'd never brought it up.
15:43And then after a couple of years, she thought –
15:45we'd bond, and she'd ask how it was going.
15:47And she asked me how my canoeing was going.
15:49And then – it was quite a different sport.
15:53And because I'm terrified of her, I just said,
15:55fine. Yeah, then it's fine.
15:57And then I finished it earlier this year,
16:01and she obviously had – she couldn't help but notice the London 2012.
16:05Quite.
16:06So she did – when I saw her this year, after a few months,
16:09she did say, do you know, I really – I just thought it was a hobby.
16:12Yes, quite. Some hobby.
16:14She's kind of got it now.
16:15Some hobby. Four Olympics you've been to now.
16:17Yeah. Yeah.
16:18Extraordinary. Extraordinary.
16:19It's been amazing.
16:20Thank you very much indeed, Catherine.
16:21Now then, what shall we do?
16:23Rich, it's your letters game.
16:25OK. Consonant, please, Rachel.
16:27Thank you, Rich.

17:38And what about Andy?
17:39Towel.
17:41No arguments there.
17:42No, none at all.
17:43Now, what have you got to offer us there, Catherine?
17:46You're grinning.
17:47We've got a couple of sixes.
17:49Yes.
17:50We've got outlaw.
17:51Yes.
17:52And an outlaw could also steal your wealth.
17:54Indeed he could.
17:57And then he's run away and has become an outlaw.
17:59Anything else, Susie?
18:00No, just sixes from us.
18:02All right.
18:03Very good.
18:0442 to 30.
18:05And it's Andy's turn for a letters game.

19:35Covert.
19:36Yes.
19:37Yeah.
19:38You could actually put the S on that, Rich.
19:40Were you wondering about it?
19:41They're thickets, coverts.
19:42But it's a good six.
19:44Mm-hm.
19:45Very good.
19:46And in the corner there.
19:47Yes, Catherine.
19:48We have a variety of sevens.
19:50Good.

19:52Scooter.
19:53Yes.
19:54Coyotes.
19:55Cooters.

20:15We'd better wake up and see what we have.
20:18Right.
20:19For this challenge, we have nine, one, eight, four,
20:24six and seven.
20:26And the target to reach, 978.
20:29978.
20:55Now, then, Rich.
20:56Nothing, Nick.
20:57Too far adrift?
20:58What about Andy?
20:59Snap.
21:00Nothing, I'm afraid.
21:01Oh.
21:02Well, Rachel, we're miles away here, so far.
21:05What about 978?
21:06How difficult is this?
21:07It is impossible.
21:08You could have got two away, either side.
21:10Impossible.
21:11Yeah, can't get close to the two away.
21:13So they didn't do too badly, then?
21:15No.

21:33You're not making a loss, you're bringing in the bucks.
21:37You're not making a loss, you're bringing in the bucks.
21:40You're not making a loss, you're bringing in the bucks.
21:59Welcome back.
22:00I left with the clue, you're not making a loss,
22:02you're bringing in the bucks.
22:05You're not making a gain,
22:07because you're lassoing the bucking broncos, I guess.
22:11Now, then, 48 to 36.
22:13Rich in the lead, and Andy, your letters game.

23:37Any advances there? Katherine?
23:39We did find a six.
23:40Yes.
23:41But when I say we...
23:45Yes, it's a hard one, this one.
23:47So you're allowed not to get this one.
23:49It's from biology, and it's diatom.
23:51Which means?
23:52It's a single-celled alga,
23:54many of which are planktonic.
23:57Yes.
23:58And you'll find that many fossil deposits have been found,
24:01so they sound very old.

25:20Six.
25:21A six and a...?
25:23Only a five, I'm afraid.
25:25Bingo.
25:26Bingo, indeed.
25:28Now, Rich.
25:29Dozing.
25:30Dozing.
25:32Something with which I'm very familiar.
25:35And Catherine.
25:37We did find a seven.
25:39Yes.
25:40Favourite one so far.
25:41Yes.
25:42Boinged.
25:43You can have that?
25:44Yes, of course you can have that.
25:46Boing.
25:47Yep, which is to make a reverberating sound.
25:49Boing.
25:50Boing, boing.
25:51Boing.
25:52They're either killing themselves.
25:55Very good, all right.
25:5759-41.
25:59Rich in the lead, but now it's time to talk to Susie.
26:03Susie, educators, please.
26:05Your origins of words, such a joy.
26:07Well, I'm back to the map of the London Underground
26:11and talking about the origins of the names that you might find on there.
26:15I'm going to start with Cannon Street,
26:17because I always thought Cannon Street in London had a very military background,
26:20but it doesn't at all.
26:21It's the street, apparently, the ancient riverside track
26:24that ran along the Thames towards the Strand.
26:27And it was once Candlerith Street,
26:30because it was the street of the candlewrights or the candle makers.
26:34And over time, candle became shortened to cannon.
26:36So, as I say, nothing to do with guns at all.
26:39Ryslip, a little bit further out,
26:41that was recorded as Rysleep in the Doomsday books.
26:44They're very, very old.
26:46And that probably comes from the Old English rys, which was a marsh,
26:49and leep, which was a leap.
26:51And it seems to refer to a spot where the Little River Pin could be crossed,
26:56perhaps with a little leap.
26:57So that's quite a sweet little one, that one.
27:00And Hoban, meanwhile, also water-related.
27:02It meant a stream in a hollow, because it was once part of the river Fleet.
27:06Canary Wharf was built in 1937
27:08for unloading and storing fruit from the Canary Islands.
27:11So very direct link there.
27:13And finally, Hillingdon, I like.
27:15Hillingdon was Hilda's Hill,
27:17referring to a Saxon and her family,
27:19although it could have been a he, actually,
27:21because Hilda could also be short for Hildvalf,
27:24which is a fantastic Anglo-Saxon name.
27:26And Hounslow was the hill, similarly, where Hund lived.
27:30That was his name.
27:31Mr Hund.
27:32Mr Hund.
27:36The Hund on the Hill. Very good.
27:3859, 41, and now then.
27:40Andy, letters game.
27:42Consonant, please, Rachel.
27:44Thank you, Andy. S.

29:07Not personally, but that's a very good word.

29:10Catherine, anything else?
29:11We had one other eight, which was beedings.
29:13Beedings.

30:34Seven.
30:35Rich?
30:36Operas.
30:37And Andy?
30:38Panniers.
30:39Panniers, yes, sir.
30:41You're spelling that with one N, aren't you?
30:43Unfortunately, it has got two.
30:45It's one in French, but two in English
30:48for the baskets that you have on your bike.
30:51Bad luck. I was foxed by that one.
30:54Now then, what else have we got there?
30:56Yes, Catherine?
30:58We had a seven.
30:59Yes.
31:00Sopier.
31:01Sopier. Who could be sopier?
31:0373-49, Rich is in the lead.
31:05Andy, last numbers game of the day.
31:07Take it away.
31:08One large and five small, please, Rachel.
31:10Thank you, Andy. We'll go for this one large
31:13and these five small for today's last numbers game.
31:17And the five small are three, seven.

32:01Yes, Andy?
32:02996.
32:03One away, Rich.
32:05996 also.
32:06Let's take it away to Andy.
32:08Six plus seven.
32:1013.
32:11Times 75.
32:13975.
32:15Plus seven times three.
32:17And then the other seven times three is 21,
32:19to add on, which puts you one away.
32:21Pretty good. Same route.
32:23Thank you, Rich. Happy, Andy?
32:24Yes, very good.
32:25But 997.
32:27How much of a problem is that?
32:29If you say 75 plus two is 77,
32:347 plus six, 13,
32:36times those two together for 1,001,
32:39and then the other seven minus three is four,
32:41to take away 997.
32:43There we go. Very good.
32:47Spot on. Spot on.
32:49So, 80 plays, 56 as we go into the final round,
32:52which, of course, is the conundrum round.
32:54So, Rich and Andy, fingers on buzzers,
32:56please let's reveal today's countdown conundrum.
33:00BUZZER
33:02Andy?
33:04Sincerity.
33:06Sincerity. Let's see whether you're right.
33:08Said with some conviction.
33:10There it is. Well done, Andy.
33:12APPLAUSE
33:14Well done.
33:16Ladies and gentlemen, good score, too.
33:1866 to Rich's 80,
33:20which means we'll see Rich back tomorrow.
33:22Sadly not Andy,
33:24so it's back to Pontefract,
33:26where I think the liquorice comes from.
33:28It is, yes, but... You still come from there?
33:30Oh, it does. You can smell it.
33:32It is grown there, the liquorice fields of Pontefract.
33:35As Betjeman says, there's a... Exactly.
33:37Yeah, you can go on tours round a gent's garden.
33:39Oh, definitely.
33:41Their lovely lips were shaped for sin.
33:43So they say.
33:45Well, you live there.

33:55See you tomorrow. See you tomorrow.
33:57You're a very fit young lady.
33:59I understand that you've taken up cycling.
34:01I've been known to cycle around, yes.
34:03Yeah?
34:05Yeah, the Countdown team found it very funny
34:07with me on my bike with my helmet on yesterday.
34:09I don't know what the problem was.
34:11Because, of course, you've got this little thing on your wrist,
34:13which fascinates me.
34:15Are you keeping in touch with things like that?
34:17How many miles you do, how many calories you take,
34:19and the rest of it?
34:21Not calories, no, it's all that.
34:23LAUGHTER
34:25Well, have a lovely meal this evening.
34:27We'll see you tomorrow.
34:29We look forward to seeing you tomorrow, same time, same place.
