00:05APPLAUSE
00:31Good afternoon and welcome to Countdown Studio.
00:34Now, in just a few days' time, something wicked will happen
00:37just down the road here, next door to us in Manchester.
00:41Yes, at the Manchester's Palace Theatre.
00:44From this Thursday, the musical Wicked will kick off on a nine-week run.
00:49And, of course, it came from the States a long time ago
00:53and has been a huge hit, not just on Broadway,
00:56but also in London's West End.
00:58It's based on the novel Wicked, The Life and Times of the Wicked,
01:02Witch of the West, which, of course, was hooked into The Wizard of Oz
01:07and got me to thinking about musicals.
01:10Do you have a favourite? Rachel?
01:12Well, I've seen the film The Sound of Music so many times.
01:16At my moment, I actually went to see Connie when she was in it,
01:19in the West End. She was brilliant.
01:21She is brilliant. We loved it. So that's the top one.
01:24But I really want to go and see Matilda as well. That's on my list.
01:27Yeah, Matilda. It's Tim Minchin, his musical.
01:31It's top of my list of ones I want to see.
01:33I'm a stranger to that, but I'm sure it will be marvellous.
01:36But right now, we've got to welcome back Jen Steadman,
01:40now on seven wins after beating Ned French from Box in Wiltshire.
01:44And now you're after your eighth win, which will, of course, make you an OctoChamp.
01:49So great good luck on that quest.
01:52Thank you very much.
01:54We're going to roll over Ross Lander, a business analyst from Huddersfield,
01:58whose six-year-old daughter Ruby, I hope, is watching,
02:01and indeed, I imagine, Ross hopes she's watching too,
02:05because she's an enormous fan of Countdown. Is that right, Ross?
02:08That's right, yes. She loves to play along at home.
02:11She's not too good at the numbers yet, but she does like to have a go at the letters.
02:15And she comes up with some decent words?
02:17She's been known to get five-letter words.
02:19Good for her. Well done.
02:21Well, let's hope you get a couple of five letters,
02:23because I tell you what, you'll need them against Jen Steadman.
02:26Let's have a big round of applause for Ross Lander and our very own Jen Steadman.
02:32And, of course, over in the corner, yes, Susie's with us again.
02:35And for the last time on this particular round of Countdown,
02:40the wonderful, wonderful Connie Fisher.
02:43But now it's time to begin the business of the day.
02:47Jen, would you be so kind? Letters game?
02:49Sure thing. Start with a consonant, please, Rachel.

03:57Thank you, Jen.

04:06Maturer. More mature.
04:08Yes.
04:09Happy enough?
04:10Both very good.
04:11What is this Jen word?
04:12Muriate.
04:14Muriatic acid was an old term for hydrochloric acid
04:17and muriate is related to that acid.
04:20Oh, good.
04:21Yes.
04:22I'm glad to learn that.
04:23Connie, what have you got for us?
04:25I've got wartime and writer for six.
04:29That's more my line of country.
04:31Very good.
04:32So, seven all and Ross, what have you got for us?
04:35Hi, Rachel.
04:36Hi, Ross.
04:37Could I have a consonant, please?
04:38Of course. Thank you. Start with L.

05:47And Jen?

05:49Flounces.
05:50Great word.
05:51Very good.
05:52Flounces.
05:53Excellent.
05:54Yeah, she flounced out.
05:55What have we got over there? Connie?
05:57Well, I'm a farmer's granddaughter and I've got fences.
06:00Oh, no, I can't have fences. No.
06:02No, there aren't fences.
06:03No, there aren't.
06:04No, there aren't.
06:05No, there aren't.
06:06No, there aren't.
06:07No, there aren't.
06:08No, there aren't fences.
06:09No.
06:10No, there aren't twos.
06:11No.
06:12Oh, well, I haven't got fences.
06:13Never mind.
06:14You can have confused.
06:15As long as your grandpa had fences, that's the main thing.
06:17But, apparently, I can have confused and that's what I am, the confused.
06:20Very good.
06:21Anything else there? Suzie?
06:22Uh, no. Flounces was the top, so we're going that way.
06:24All right, well done.
06:25Very good.
06:2615 points to Ross's.
06:27Seven and Numbers Game.
06:29Jen? Jen's Numbers Game.

07:47Take the 1, 3, 2 to add it all.
07:49Well done, 202.
07:50Well done.
07:51OK, so Jen's 25 plays Ross's 17 as we go into a teatime teaser, which is one debit.
08:01And the clue, you will do as you're told because you're this.
08:05You'll do as you're told because you're this.
08:23Welcome back.
08:24I left you with the clue, you will do as you're told because you're this.
08:27And the answer is you're obedient.
08:30Obedient.
08:3125 to 17.
08:34Ross on 17 and Ross's letters game.

10:01Very good.
10:0232 to 17.
10:03Now, what have we got over there?
10:04Connie?
10:05Nepalese.
10:06I've no idea what it means, but Susie does, so that's a gem.
10:09Yeah, they're the edible pads of a cactus.
10:12It's used in Mexican cuisine.
10:14And the cactus is apparently a major food plant for the bugs,
10:17which give us cochineal.
10:1932 to 17.
10:21Jen in the lead, as she normally is.
10:23And now it's your letters game, Jen.

11:23Thank you, Jen.
11:25Stick with seven.
11:27Seven. Yes, Ross?
11:29Six.
11:30And that six?
11:31Gator.
11:33Gator. Now then, Jen.
11:34Frigate.
11:36Frigate?
11:37Yes.
11:38Very good.
11:39What else have we got there?
11:41I had lots of fives.
11:43Great, grave, but nothing great, really.
11:46Susie?
11:47A couple of Cs.
11:49Variate, which is a term from statistics
11:52about quantities that have numerical values
11:55for each member of a group.
11:57Yeah.
11:58And virgate, V-I-R-G-A-T-E,
12:00which was once a measure of land, about 30 acres.
12:03Right, 39 to 17.
12:05Now then, Ross, your numbers game.
12:07OK, could I have two from the bottom
12:09and any four from the top, please?
12:11Thank you, Ross.
12:12So two small ones and the four large from the top row.
12:16And the four large from the top row.
12:19Let's mix things up.
12:20Right, for this round, the two small ones are three and five.
12:24And the four largest, we know, 100, 75, 50 and 25.
12:30And the target to reach, 405.
12:33405.
12:46MUSIC PLAYS
13:06Yes, Ross?
13:07405, not written down.
13:09Now then, Jen?
13:10405, written down.
13:11Right. Ross?
13:13Five times 75, please.
13:15Five 75s are 375.
13:19OK, and add the 25.
13:22And add the 25, the 400.
13:25And 100 over 50 is 2.
13:27100 over 50 is 2.
13:29And add that and the 3 onto the 400.
13:31Well done, 405.
13:33Thank you very much. Jen?
13:34Exactly the same.
13:36There we go.
13:38Perfection. 405, well done.
13:40APPLAUSE
13:42Excellent stuff.
13:43But now it's our turn to talk to Connie.
13:46She is in something that looks like the starry, starry night.
13:50A very fabulous dress.
13:52I'm like a glitter ball today.
13:54Sky at night.
13:55Well, I suppose you were talking about musicals
13:58and I felt that I couldn't come on Countdown
14:00not talk about The Sound of Music.
14:02And, of course, I was voted as Maria
14:04and I enjoyed that over the course of five years, playing Maria.
14:07And even now, when I'm walking down the street,
14:09people shout, you know, Maria.
14:11And I stop and I turn and I look at them and chat to them.
14:14But there have been a few cases of mistaken identity
14:17over the past seven years.
14:19And one of them had to be when somebody in the street
14:22thought that I was Anne Hathaway.
14:24And I was quite...
14:25Well, I was really...
14:27I thought it was a massive compliment to be called Anne Hathaway
14:30until I realised they thought I was Anne Hathaway
14:32after she'd shaved her head in the Les Mis movie.
14:35LAUGHTER
14:37The best case of mistaken identity, I think,
14:39was on a flight to New York.
14:41And I was with my husband at the time
14:43and this flight attendant came to our economy seats
14:46and he said,
14:47OMG, are you...?
14:49It's like in disbelief, it's like flapping his...
14:51You are so not, are you?
14:53You are... Oh, no, am I? You totally are.
14:55So I didn't know who I was, really.
14:58But I followed him to first class
15:00cos that's what he told me to do.
15:02And so my husband Jeremy and I followed him to the first class bar
15:05and we enjoyed a few glasses of champagne,
15:07probably about a bottle of champagne later.
15:10This lovely flight attendant, all flustered,
15:12he came back and asked us if we were having a good time
15:15and said, you know, I just loved you in that...
15:18I thought, musical?
15:20He said, no, movie.
15:22I was like, right, I haven't done a movie.
15:25Looked at my husband and he was like,
15:27who does he think you are?
15:29He said, you're Winona Ryder, aren't you?
15:31LAUGHTER
15:33Brilliant start.
15:37Very good. 49-27.
15:39As we turn to Jen.
15:41Jen, letters game.

16:09M
16:11And a final vowel.
16:14And a final O.
16:17Dun-dun!
16:31BUZZER
16:47Yes, Jen?
16:49Seven. What about Ross?
16:51Seven as well. Two sevens, Jen?
16:53Onerous. Thank you. And Ross?
16:55Spooner. We allowed a spooner?
16:57We asked somebody who spoons kisses and covers.
16:59Oh, yes, spoons, yes.
17:01I remember that. Vaguely.
17:03What about...
17:05What about you?
17:07Morose.
17:09Morose is not very nice.
17:11Well, no. It's a good word.
17:13And going up to seven is supremo.
17:15Supremo.
17:17Very good. All right. 56-34.

18:34Ogives. Thank you.
18:36Are we happy in the corner? Yep.
18:38Gothic arches and the ogives.
18:40Very good. And Connie?
18:42Voices.
18:44I love it when something appropriate comes up, so voices.
18:46Anything else, Susie?
18:48Sixes as well. Gloves, clothes.
18:50Just a band of sixes.
18:52Excellent. All right. 62 plays 40.
18:54As we come to another numbers game.
18:56Jen?
18:58Might as well finish as I started. One large and five small, please.
19:00One large, five small.
19:02I should have had the medi this time, shouldn't I?
19:04Right, thank you, Jen. One large, five small.
19:06And your last number selection for a while.
19:08And they are one, four,
19:10eight, six,
19:12seven, and the large one, 50.
19:14And the target,

20:02Let's hear from you, Ross.
20:04Seven minus four is three.
20:06Add to the 50 is 53.
20:08And eight plus one is nine.
20:10And multiply that.
20:12Well done. 477.
20:14Very good indeed. And Jen?
20:16Must have read your mind. Exactly the same.
20:18Happy? All right.
20:20APPLAUSE
20:24Now it's time for Tea Time Teaser,
20:26which is Eve gelds.
20:28And the clue,
20:30it sounds something like a greengrocer does,
20:32but it's about fabric.
20:34It sounds like something a greengrocer does,
20:36but it's about fabric.
20:38MUSIC PLAYS
20:46APPLAUSE
20:50Welcome back.
20:52I left you with the clue.
20:54It sounds like something a greengrocer does,
20:56but it's about fabric.
20:58And the answer is
21:00selvedge.
21:02Selvedge. Susie?
21:04Selvedge. Textile manufacturers
21:06will know all about selvedge.
21:08It's an edge produced on woven fabric during manufacture
21:10that prevents it from unravelling.
21:12Oh, from fraying.
21:14Exactly. Yeah, the thread's coming loose.
21:16And that's selvedge, is it?
21:18Good. How unusual.
21:2072 plays 50, and it's Ross's letters game.

22:50And over in the corner was Susie.
22:52Susie and Connie. Connie?
22:54Well, I didn't get anywhere near enough.
22:56I just got another word, another.
22:58But Susie got senorita.
23:00Yes, senorita with the H.
23:02So Portuguese-speaking...
23:04Very good.
23:06..lady. And just to say,
23:08hortensia is a hydrangea.
23:10Very good. Well done.
23:12That's a good game. It's a good game.
23:14Jen, why not have a letters game with us?

24:10CLOCK TICKS
24:24Yes, Jen?
24:26Five.
24:28Just four.
24:30And your four?

24:34Yes, Jen?
24:36Tuti.
24:38And in the corner?
24:40I struggled.
24:42I struggled.
24:44Gout was the only one I spotted.
24:46But nothing original.
24:48Gout, tout. Tuti is absolutely fine.
24:50I was looking at gutty,
24:52which is a northern word for a plimsoll,
24:54but it's with a Y at the end in the singular.
24:56I see. All right.
24:58Tough enough. 95-68.
25:00But Susie,
25:02back to you for your wonderful
25:04origin of words.
25:06I'm going to talk about
25:08the origins of the word
25:10prevaricate. I've been reading a great book by Charles
25:12Earl Funk, which was written in the 60s.
25:14But it means to speak or act
25:16in an evasive way. And if I say
25:18egg-legged, habble-hocked or nonny-kneed,
25:20I'm going to give you a clue.
25:22So if a cowboy had been in the streets
25:24of Rome in the days of Caesar,
25:26any spectator seeing his stereotypical
25:28bandy legs
25:30would have called him a prevaricator.
25:32Bandy legs from too much riding,
25:34obviously. And that's what the term
25:36meant. It was a bow-legged person
25:38or one who, because of his crooked
25:40limbs, was unable to walk
25:42in a straight line.
25:44And the term came to be used in
25:46Roman courts of law, and it was applied to a
25:48prosecutor who was supposed to be
25:50representing one party but actually made a
25:52secret agreement with the other party
25:54and so betrayed his own
25:56client. In other words,
25:58figuratively speaking, he didn't walk straight
26:00but he straddled the fence.
26:02And so prevarication came to be a
26:04false accusation or a false defence.
26:06And it was that type of crookedness
26:08or evasiveness, if you like, an
26:10all-round falsehood which marked
26:12the first prevaricators.
26:14So not all of them need to be bandy-legged these days
26:16but that's where it comes from.
26:18That's great stuff. Prevarication.
26:20Very good.
26:2295 to 68.
26:24My word, Ross. Uphill battle now.
26:26It's a letters game for you.

31:02Oh, no, I think I've gone wrong.
31:04No.
31:06That's a bit of a first.
31:08My word, Ross, look at this.
31:10Now then, Ross, come on.
31:12100 over 50 is two.
31:14100 over 50 is two.
31:16Add the 75 and the 25.
31:18Add the 75 and add the 25.
31:20And I've gone wrong as well.
31:22LAUGHTER
31:24Under pressure.
31:26All right, we're going to turn to she who never fails us.
31:29Is it that tricky?
31:31Yeah, tricky one. I'll have another quick look.
31:33I'll leave that with you. All right.
31:35So, here we are. Final round, chaps.
31:37Jen on 109,
31:39Ross on 82, and I think,
31:41you know, Jen, in all her victories,
31:43has never had such a close-run thing.
31:45Even though it's a few behind.
31:47Fingers on buzzers, please, Jen and Ross.
31:49Let's have today's Countdown Conundrum.
31:57Yes, Jen?
31:58Steadfast.
32:00Steadfast. Let's see whether you're right.
32:02Steadfast. Oh, well done.
32:04APPLAUSE
32:10Well done. Bit of a rocky moment there.
32:14But well done. Well played, Ross, too.
32:16Good score against Jen.
32:18Excellent score, 82 points.
32:20So, it's back to little Ruby,
32:23who I'm sure is hugging herself with pleasure,
32:25having seen Dad on television.
32:27And you're taking back to her your goodie bag,
32:30back to Huddersfield,
32:32and with our best wishes. Great stuff.
32:34Now, young lady,
32:36we're propelling you into the future.
32:38Later on in the year, we shall see you back,
32:40and I think we've got high hopes for you.
32:42Brilliant stuff.
32:44I hope that Rachel will have totted everything up
32:46and she's going to have some more news for us in a second.
32:49Susie, we shall see you tomorrow,
32:51but sadly, Connie, we won't.
32:54But now that you've been here twice
32:56and you've enjoyed it both times,
32:58please diarise it throughout the year and every year.
33:01I would love to. It's been a great pleasure.
33:03Absolutely love it on Countdown.
33:05Brilliant stuff. And tomorrow,
33:07I think we've got Jodie Kidd joining us,
33:09so that's an exciting prospect.
33:11Lovely to have you. Thanks, Nick.
33:13Great stuff. So, tell us about Miss Steadman.
33:17Well, she's set some records.
33:19She's been absolutely fantastic.
33:21Earlier in her run, I said she was possibly
33:23the best female we've ever had,
33:25and she's proved that because she's the first female
33:27to score eight centuries.
33:29She's got the highest ever score for a girl,
33:31which is 130, and she's actually
33:33the third highest total scorer ever in Countdown.
33:36Isn't that something? Well done, Rachel.
33:41Well done. Well done.
33:44That is something really to keep our eye on
33:48for later in the year.
33:50Average of 119.
33:52It's just fantastic.
33:54It's going to be a very, very exciting finals this year.
33:56Indeed it is.
33:58The good news is for everyone else at home,
34:00if they were thinking of coming on,
34:02she's out of the way for a while.
34:04There's a good time to get your application in.
34:06A lot of people very relieved not to be
34:08running up against you again.
34:10See you tomorrow. See you tomorrow.
34:12And we shall see you tomorrow.
34:14Jodie Kilby here, but Jen Stedman won't.
34:16But that doesn't mean that we're not going to have
34:18another great Countdown session here in the studio.
34:21Join us then. You'll be sure of it.
34:23Good afternoon.
