Sweltering heat returning to the Midwest
It's been a cooler-than-average August in places like Chicago and St. Louis, but the heat is about to build back up before the month ends.

00:00But we have more heat to talk about, so we have to be really prepared for more concerns.
00:04And part of the message here whenever we talk about this topic is that it doesn't have to be all that hot outside
00:11for the inside of a car to really heat up in a big way.
00:14Even in a cooler than average summer like we've been experiencing in Minneapolis,
00:18it can still happen with temps in the 70s outside.
00:21When we take a look at how the summer has stacked up so far, you can see June, July, and August statistically.
00:28Minneapolis, you've had a cool summer across the board, slightly cooler than average, barely cooler than average,
00:33June and July, and significantly so so far this month.
00:36Chicago, you had a real hot June, Chicago, St. Louis, and Kansas City.
00:40In fact, some of you in places like St. Louis hit 103 degrees back on June 25th.
00:45But then we've had a cooler than average July and August.
00:48In fact, I'm updating the graphic, now 3.3 degrees below average this month for Kansas City after that hot June.
00:54And we've been as high as 98, but that was way back on June 29th.
00:57We haven't seen a whole lot of big-time heat in these areas recently, but the heat will be building back.
01:02Right now, we're dealing with readings around 89 in St. Louis and Springfield.
01:06So it's warm, but not terribly hot, only 75 up in Detroit.
01:10Enjoy that.
01:11But into Saturday, the heat begins to build into parts of Nebraska and Kansas.
01:15And tomorrow night, we're going to begin to feel a little more heat and humidity in the way that we're not going to cool down as much.
01:23So a low of mid-70s here into St. Louis and Kansas City.
01:26So just kind of a little subtle change here after some cool nights recently.
01:30The nights are going to get a little warmer.
01:32And from Sunday onward, it's just off to the races with the heat here into the Plains with temperatures 8 to 14 degrees above average.
01:39And Sunday, a hot one.
01:41We're looking at 97 degrees your high into Des Moines, Iowa on Sunday.
01:45Up to the north, around the rim of the heat, the northern periphery, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, scattered strong storms up this way with flash flooding and hail potential.
01:55It may not look like a whole lot here.
01:57You can see some scattered showers tomorrow and thunderstorms into parts of Iowa moving east into the Quad Cities.
02:03But this action here up into eastern North Dakota and into Minnesota may be a little more than future radar suggests.
02:09Some of those storms will be strong and severe.
02:11And then Monday, we're going to have some more action out there.
02:13But the heat's the bigger story here as temperatures surge up into the Midwest and parts of the Northeast, Harrisburg, Baltimore, D.C.,
02:23and also areas like Ohio, 90 to 95 for accurate real field temperatures.
02:28But on Monday, Little Rock, you're going to have accurate real field temps 100 to 105.
02:33And into the Northeast here, the heat will build, but the Midwest is going to be locked in.
