00:00Many Muslims consider music to be allowed.
00:05Could you just confirm,
00:08did the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him,
00:11speak against music?
00:14There is a great difference of opinion
00:16as far as the Muslims are concerned,
00:19whether music is allowed or not, whether it's permitted or not.
00:22But there is no verse in the Quran
00:25directly prohibiting music,
00:27but there are indications.
00:29Allah says in the Quran, in Surah Luqman,
00:32chapter number 31, verse number 6, it says
00:35that among them there are those people
00:37who purchase idle tales
00:39without knowledge and without meaning
00:42and they mislead the people
00:45away from the path of Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala.
00:48And they ridicule the path of Allah, subhanahu wa ta'ala.
00:50These are the people who will receive
00:52a humiliating punishment.
00:55So based on this, if you see a tafsir,
00:57many of the tafsir says that this idle tales
01:00without knowledge, without meaning,
01:02refers to un-Islamic songs
01:05and the musical instruments, if you read the tafsir.
01:08As far as the Prophet prohibiting music,
01:10there are various sahih hadiths.
01:12So if you read the hadith of Muhammad, peace be upon him,
01:15then there'll be no doubt whether it's permitted or prohibited.
01:18Our beloved Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said,
01:20it's mentioned in Sahih Bukhari,
01:23volume number 7, hadith number 5590.
01:28The beloved Prophet said that
01:31from among my followers, there'll be some people
01:34who will make illicit sex,
01:36that is adultery and fornication,
01:39as well as wearing of silk,
01:42drinking intoxicants,
01:44and using musical instruments as legal.
01:49There'll be among my people
01:51who will make some things which are illegal,
01:54that is adultery, fornication,
01:57wearing of silk, having intoxicants,
02:00and the playing of musical instruments as legal.
02:04Now this hadith, when it says
02:06that they will make certain things legal,
02:08and we know that intoxicants is haram,
02:10we know very well that adultery, fornication is haram,
02:13because it is mentioned along with these things which are forbidden,
02:17musical instruments are mentioned along with them,
02:19it indicates that the Prophet has prohibited them.
02:22But some people will make it legal,
02:24and we know there are some scholars
02:27who today do permit that playing of musical instruments is allowed.
02:31So this hadith is very clear-cut
02:33in saying that musical instruments are haram.
02:36But there are other Sahih hadith
02:38which do permit some musical instruments,
02:42especially the daf, that is the tambourine.
02:45If you read the hadith of our beloved Prophet Muhammad,
02:48of Sahih Bukhari, volume number 5,
02:50hadith number 4001,
02:52where it is said that Muhammad,
02:55after consummating his marriage,
02:57he came and he sat outside,
02:59along with one of the Sahabas,
03:01when two small girls were playing the tambourine,
03:06that is the daf,
03:08and they were praising that Sahaba,
03:11his father, how he died in jihad,
03:13and when they started praising the Prophet,
03:15they said, don't praise me,
03:17you can say what you were saying earlier,
03:19indicating that the Prophet did not prohibit them
03:21from playing the tambourine.
03:23Furthermore, there is a hadith in Sahih Bukhari,
03:25volume number 2,
03:27hadith number 987,
03:29where the Prophet,
03:31while he was lying down,
03:33this hadith is narrated by Hazrat Naisha,
03:35may Allah be pleased with her,
03:37she says that two small girls
03:39were playing the tambourine,
03:41when Hazrat Abu Bakr,
03:43may Allah be pleased with him,
03:45the father of Hazrat Naisha,
03:47he comes and he says to them,
03:49just stop it,
03:51Muhammad was sleeping on a cot,
03:53he says to Hazrat Abu Bakr,
03:55let them do it,
03:57these are the days of Eid,
03:59let them do it.
04:01Furthermore, there is a hadith in Tirmidhi,
04:03hadith number 3690,
04:05where a beloved Prophet,
04:07he says that there is a person
04:09that I had vowed to Allah,
04:11that if you come back victoriously,
04:13I will sing and I will play the daf,
04:15I will bind the tambourine.
04:17The Prophet said,
04:19if you have vowed, then do it,
04:21if you have not vowed, then don't do it.
04:23So these hadith do indicate
04:25that musical instruments, per se, is haram,
04:27except for the daf, that is the tambourine,
04:29the Prophet did permit it sometimes.
04:31Dr Zakir, thank you very much
04:33for that answer, that final answer
04:35today in this,
04:37it has been a very, very interesting
04:39and informative, as usual,
04:41session regarding
04:43the topic, Ramadan,
04:45what is recommended and what is
04:47discouraged. Thank you very much
04:49Dr Zakir, Jazakallah Khayran
