03:41So, let me say, on behalf of myself and the first second gentleman of the United States, my husband, Doug Emhoff,
03:55thank you for the warm welcome.
04:07And let me just say, it's good to be here with all of the friends, all of the leaders who are here.
04:14I want to thank former Governor Ed Rendell,
04:20Senator Bob Casey, who we will re-elect this November,
04:27Senator John Fetterman,
04:31Mayor Sherrell Parker,
04:35and Chairman Jamie Harrison.
04:38And it is so good to be here with your incredible Governor, Josh Shapiro.
04:55And I will say, Josh is a dear, dear friend and an extraordinary leader.
05:01He and I have been spending a lot of time together over the years,
05:04and I told Josh, look, I am so, so invested in our friendship and doing this together,
05:10because together with Josh Shapiro, we will win Pennsylvania.
05:17We will win Pennsylvania.
05:20And I thank you, Josh. I thank you.
05:29So, Philadelphia, I launched my campaign for the President of the United States a mere two weeks ago.
05:41And it's been a bit of a whirlwind.
05:46And just last night, the delegates to the Democratic National Convention finished voting.
05:53And so, I stand before you today to proudly announce
06:05I am now officially the Democratic nominee for President of the United States.
06:23And so now we've got some work to do.
06:31We need to move to the general election and win that.
06:38And to all the friends, listen, we also need to level set.
06:42We are the underdogs in this race.
06:45But we have the momentum, and I know exactly what we are up against.
06:58Now, many of you know, before I was elected Vice President or elected a United States Senator,
07:05I was an elected Attorney General, and before that, elected District Attorney.
07:16And before that, I was a courtroom prosecutor.
07:23So in those roles, I took on perpetrators of all kinds.
07:33Predators who abused women.
07:39Fraudsters who scammed consumers.
07:45Cheaters who broke the rules for their own gain.
07:51So hear me when I say,
08:04I know Donald Trump's type.
08:21So, but, let me just say, let me say, hold on, hold on, hold on.
08:32This campaign, our campaign, is not just a fight against Donald Trump.
08:39Our campaign, this campaign, is a fight for the future.
08:48It's a fight for the future.
08:51And Pennsylvania, we fight for the future.
08:56With affordable housing, affordable health care, affordable child care, paid leave.
09:05We fight for a future where we build a broad-based economy,
09:11where every American has the opportunity to own a home, to start a business, and to build wealth.
09:24We fight for a future where we bring down prices that are still too high,
09:30and lower the cost of living for America's families.
09:39So that they have a chance not just to get by, but to get ahead.
09:50We fight for a future where we defend our most fundamental freedoms.
09:56The freedom to vote.
10:03The freedom to be safe from gun violence.
10:12The freedom to love who you love openly and with pride.
10:23And the freedom of a woman to make decisions about her own body, not having her government tell her what to do.
10:44So, I love you too.
10:47So here's the thing, here's the thing.
10:49Since the day that I announced my candidacy, I set out to find a partner who can help build this brighter future.
11:04A leader who will help unite our nation and move us forward.
11:10A fighter for the middle class.
11:14A patriot who believes, as I do, in the extraordinary promise of America.
11:26A promise of freedom, opportunity, and justice, not just for some, but for all.
11:47So Pennsylvania, I'm here today because I found such a leader.
11:56Governor Tim Walz of the great state of Minnesota.
12:16So, to those who know him best, to those who know him best, Tim is more than a governor.
12:26To his wife, Gwen, he is a husband.
12:30To his kids, Hope and Gus, he is a dad.
12:35To his fellow veterans, he is Sergeant Major Walz.
12:50To the people, to the people of southern Minnesota, for 12 years he was congressman.
13:00To his former high school students, he was Mr. Walz.
13:13And to his former high school football players, he was coach.
13:28And in 91 days, the nation will know Coach Walz by another name,
13:42Vice President of the United States.
14:09So, America, for some folks, they're just getting to know Coach Walz's story.
14:15And I'll tell you, he is the proud product of a middle class family in rural Nebraska.
14:20He is a veteran who served our nation in uniform for more than two decades,
14:26as a member of the Army National Guard, and he went to college on the GI Bill.
14:38He is someone who long before he entered politics, worked as a teacher.
14:52When Coach Walz and his wife, Gwen, moved from his native Nebraska to Minnesota nearly 30 years ago,
14:59they both took jobs at the local high school.
15:06Coach Walz taught social studies, Gwen taught English.
15:15After school, Tim was the linebacker's coach for the football team.
15:25Where I've heard the stories about he had a knack for using the game of football to teach life lessons.
15:33He saw the potential in kids who sometimes didn't even see it in themselves.
15:48Under those Friday night lights, Coach Walz motivated his players to believe they could achieve anything.
15:57And together, they defied the odds, going from a winless record to the school's first ever state championship.
16:10Coach! Coach!
16:37And I'll say and I'll add, Tim wasn't only a role model on the football field.
16:42Around that same time, Coach Walz was approached by a student in his social studies class.
16:48The young man was one of the first openly gay students at the school, and was hoping to start a gay-straight alliance.
16:56At a time when acceptance was difficult to find for LGBTQ students,
17:03Tim knew the signal that it would send to have a football coach get involved.
17:27So he signed up to be the group's faculty advisor.
17:38And as students have said, he made the school a safe place for everybody.
17:51In the high school yearbook, the students voted Coach Walz the quote, most inspiring faculty member.
18:07And as I think everyone here can see, Tim Walz was the kind of teacher and mentor that every child in America dreams of having.
18:19And that every kid deserves.
18:26The kind of coach, because he's the kind of person who makes people feel like they belong and then inspires them to dream big.
18:37And that's the kind of vice president he will be.
18:45And that's the kind of vice president America deserves.
18:58So it was Coach Walz's students who actually helped him decide to run for office.
19:04And he served 12 years in Congress, representing a purple district, as he reached across the aisle to get things done.
19:13He was the highest ranking enlisted man to ever serve in the United States Congress.
19:29And the top Democrat on the Veterans Committee.
19:38And he was known as one of Capitol Hill's best marksmen, winning a bipartisan sharpshooting contest year after year.
20:00In Washington, Tim worked to raise the minimum wage.
20:08To protect the freedom of workers to join a union.
20:18And he cast one of the critical votes to pass the Affordable Care Act.
20:28Which, of course, gave health insurance to tens of millions of Americans.
20:33I'm going to tell you, when we win, Tim and I will continue to make the Affordable Care Act even stronger.
20:40Now, let's talk about what we're dealing with on the other side.
21:07So on that last topic, if Donald Trump gets a chance, he will end the Affordable Care Act.
21:17And take us back to a time when insurance companies had the power to deny people with pre-existing conditions.
21:26You remember what that was like?
21:30Children with asthma, breast cancer survivors, grandparents with diabetes.
21:37Well, Governor Walz and I will not let that happen.
21:46Because we believe health care should be a right and not just a privilege for those who can afford it.
22:00As Governor, Tim has continued to fight for working families.
22:04He secured paid leave for workers in Minnesota.
22:14And he refused, he refused, as Governor, to allow any student in their public schools to go hungry.
22:28So he made school breakfast and lunch free for every child.
22:43And Tim Walz and I, we agree about many things, including when our middle class is strong, America is strong.
22:56And strengthening the middle class will be my defining goal as I am President of the United States.
23:09So, Pennsylvania, ours is a fight for the future of the middle class and it is a fight for freedom.
23:24In this moment, we are witnessing a full-on attack against hard-fought, hard-won freedoms and rights.
23:36Take reproductive freedom.
23:39Now think about this.
23:41Donald Trump said he wants to punish women.
23:49And as a result of his actions, today in America, one out of three women live in a state with a Trump abortion ban.
23:58One out of three.
24:01Some of these bans go back to the 1800s, even before women had a right to vote.
24:09Think about that.
24:11Well, Tim and I have a message for Trump and others who want to turn back the clock on our fundamental freedoms.
24:19We're not going back.
24:46And so let me say about Tim Walz, he has shown up to stand against these attacks long before he stood on the stage with me.
24:57After Roe was overturned, he was the first governor in the country to sign a new law that enshrined reproductive freedom as a fundamental right.
25:19And with Tim Walz by my side, when I am President of the United States and we win majorities in the United States Congress, we will pass a bill to restore reproductive freedom, and I will proudly sign it into law.
25:46Tim Walz has also defended the sacred freedom to vote.
25:50As governor, he signed the most significant expansion of voting rights in Minnesota in over 50 years.
26:06And with Governor Walz's help, when I am President, we are going to finally pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Act and the Freedom to Vote Act.
26:21We're going to get it done.
26:28So Tim is a hunter and a gun owner who believes, as the majority of gun owners do, that we need reasonable gun safety laws in America.
26:46So as governor, he expanded background checks and increased penalties for illegal firearm sales.
27:00And together, when we win in November, we are finally going to pass universal background checks, red flag laws, and an assault weapons ban.
27:21Through his work, Tim, the way I think about it, he really does shine a light on a brighter future that we can build together.
27:34In his state, he has been a model chief executive, and with his experience, I'm telling you, Tim Walz will be ready on day one.
27:50In fact, when you compare his resume, shall we, to Trump's running mate,
28:15Well, well, well, some might say it's like a matchup between the varsity team and the JV squad.
28:46So Pennsylvania, ultimately in this election, we each face a question.
28:53What kind of country do we want to live in?
28:57A country of freedom, compassion, and rule of law?
29:07Or a country of chaos, fear, and hate?
29:12And here's the beauty of our democracy.
29:19We each have the power to answer that question.
29:23We each have the power to answer that question.
29:26The power is with the people.
29:29We love our country, and I believe it is the highest form of patriotism to fight for the ideals of our country.
29:47That is how we preserve the promise of America.
29:58And after all, you know, the promise of America is what makes it possible for two middle-class kids,
30:12One, a daughter of Oakland, California, who was raised by a working mother.
30:22The other, a son of the Nebraska plains who grew up working on a farm.
30:31It's the promise of America, because only in America, only in America,
30:44is it possible for them together to make it all the way to the White House.
31:02Only in America.
31:04Only in America.
31:10Only in America.
31:12USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA!
31:23That's right.
31:26And so Coach Walz and I may hail from different corners of our great country, but our values are the same.
31:32And we both believe in lifting people up, not knocking them down.
31:44He and I, we both know the vast majority of people in our country have so much more in common than what separates them.
31:56When we look at folks, we see in our fellow Americans, neighbors, not enemies.
32:04Not enemies.
32:11And so my promise to you is this.
32:15Our campaign will reach out to everyone, from red states to blue states.
32:25From the heartland to the coast, in rural, urban, suburban, and tribal communities.
32:39We are running a campaign on behalf of all Americans.
32:47And when elected, we will govern on behalf of all Americans.
32:56And so, with Tim Walz by my side, and with all of you at our side, let us fight for the promise of our future.
33:11And with that, I ask Pennsylvania, are you ready to make your voices heard?
33:17Do we believe in freedom?
33:24Do we believe in opportunity?
33:28Do we believe in the promise of America?
33:33And are we ready to fight for it?
33:40And when we fight, we win.

34:29Thank you, Madam Vice President, for the trust you put in me, but maybe more so, thank you for bringing back the joy.
34:45I'm thrilled to be on this journey with you and Doug, this incredible journey.
34:49And Pennsylvania, I know you know this, but my God, what a treasure you have in Josh Shapiro.
35:05Holy hell, can this guy bring the fire. He can bring the fire. This is a visionary leader.
35:11Also, I have to tell you, everybody in America knows, when you need a bridge fixed, call that guy.
35:20And I think sometimes you forget and you see people a little one-dimensional, but seeing a guy who cares so deeply about his family, a man with compassion, vision,
35:37and I'll have to tell you this, I know this from experience, there is no one you would rather go to a Springsteen concert in Jersey with than him.
35:50Roots.
35:56And I can't wait for all of you in America to get to know my incredible wife, Gwen, a 29-year public school educator.
36:12Don't ever underestimate teachers.
36:20And our two beautiful kids, Hope and Gus.
36:26I couldn't be prouder to be on this ticket and to help Vice President Harris become what we all know is very, very good for us to think about,
36:36next President of the United States of America.
36:49From her first day as a prosecutor, as a district attorney, Attorney General of the great state of California, a United States Senator, and Vice President of the United States,
37:10Vice President Harris has fought on the side of the American people.
37:16She took on the predators, she took on the fraudsters, she took down the transnational gangs, she stood up against powerful corporate interests,
37:27and she never hesitated to reach across the aisle if it meant improving people's lives.
37:34And I want all of you to hold this, and don't ever underestimate the power of this, she does it all with a sense of joy.
37:53I know a little something about that commitment to people.
37:56I was born in West Point, Nebraska.
38:00I lived in Butte, a small town of 400, where community was a way of life.
38:05Growing up, I spent the summers working on the family farm.
38:08My mom and dad taught us, show generosity towards your neighbors, and work for a common good.
38:22My dad served in the Army during the Korean War.
38:25My dad served in the Army during the Korean War.
38:28With his encouragement, at 17, I joined the Army National Guard.
38:39For 24 years, I proudly wore the uniform of this nation.
38:50The National Guard gave me purpose.
38:52It gave me the strength of a shared commitment to something greater than ourselves.
38:57And just as it did for my dad and millions of others, the GI Bill gave me a shot at a college education.
39:13My dad was a teacher. My brothers and sisters and I followed in their footsteps.
39:19Three out of four of us married teachers.
39:25What we do.
39:28For nearly 20 years, I had the privilege of teaching high school social studies and coaching football.
39:39Including winning that state championship.
39:44Don't ever close the yearbook.
39:49But it was my students. They encouraged me to run for office.
39:52They saw in me what I was hoping to instill in them.
39:56A commitment of common good.
39:58A belief that one person can make a difference.
40:01So in 2006, I took a leap and I ran for Congress.
40:09And because high school teachers are super optimistic, I was running in a district that had one Democrat since 1892.
40:26Well, my neighbors graced me with an opportunity to represent them in the United States House of Representatives.
40:31I'm proud of the work we did there together.
40:39I worked across the aisle on veterans issues, on agriculture, and on ways to grow rural economies.
40:45I learned the art of compromise without compromising my values.
40:50And now as governor of the great state of Minnesota, I bring those experiences to bear in tackling the challenges that are facing our great state.
41:04Minnesota's strength comes from our values.
41:08Our commitment to working together.
41:10To seeing past our differences.
41:12To always being willing to lend a helping hand.
41:15Those are the same values I learned on the family farm and tried to instill in my students.
41:20I took it to Congress and to the state capitol.
41:23And now, Vice President Harris and I are running to take those very values to the White House.
41:29Now, Donald Trump sees the world a little differently than us.
41:47First of all, he doesn't know the first thing about service.
41:54He doesn't have time for it because he's too busy serving himself.
42:02Again and again and again, Trump weakens our economy to strengthen his own hand.
42:12He mocks our laws.
42:15He sows chaos and division.
42:20And that's to say nothing of his record as president.
42:27He froze in the face of the COVID crisis.
42:32He drove our economy into the ground.
42:35And make no mistake, violent crime was up under Donald Trump.
42:47That's not even counting the crimes he committed.
43:15You know, some of us in here are old enough to remember.
43:30I see you down there.
43:32I see those old white guys.
43:34Some of us are old enough to remember when it was Republicans who were talking about freedom.
43:43It turns out now, what they meant was the government should be free to invade your doctor's office.
43:52In Minnesota, we respect our neighbors and their personal choices that they make.
44:01Even if we wouldn't make the same choice for ourselves, there's a golden rule.
44:05Mind your own damn business.
44:24These guys are after my heart, Chet, mind your own damn business.
44:27That feels good, so thank you.
44:29Look, that includes IVF.
44:33And this gets personal for me and my family.
44:37When my wife and I decided to have children, we spent years going through infertility treatments.
44:43And I remember praying every night for a call for good news.
44:47The pit in my stomach when the phone rang, and the agony when we heard that the treatments hadn't worked.
44:52So it wasn't by chance that when we welcomed our daughter into the world, we named her Hope.
45:09When Vice President and I talk about freedom, we mean the freedom to make your own health care decisions.
45:20And for our children to be free to go to school without worrying they'll be shot dead in their classrooms.
45:39By the way, as you heard, I was one of the best shots in Congress.
45:42In Minnesota, we believe in the Second Amendment, but we also believe in common sense gun violence laws.
45:55Vice President Harris' idea of freedom is a ticket for education to be that ticket to the middle class, not crippling death.
46:02Air that's clean. Water that's pure. Communities that are safe.
46:17A place where we settle our political differences not through violence, but with our votes.
46:28And that's what this election's about. What direction will this country go in?
46:38We're not going back. Well, Donald Trump would damn sure take us backwards, let's be clear about that.
46:47And don't believe him when he plays dumb. He knows exactly what Project 2025 will do to restrict our freedom.
47:04To rig the economy to help the super rich.
47:08If Trump gets a chance to return, he's going to pick up exactly where he left off four years ago.
47:15Only this time, it will be much, much worse.
47:20Raising costs on middle class families. He will repeal the Affordable Care Act, no doubt about it.
47:29He'll gut Social Security and Medicare.
47:36And when somebody tells you are, they believe him. He said he'd ban abortion across this country and he'll do it whether or not Congress is there or not.
47:46Donald Trump's not fighting for you or your family.
47:50He never said at that kitchen table like the one I grew up at, wondering how we were going to pay the bills.
47:56He set his country club up in Mar-a-Lago wondering how he can cut taxes for his rich friends.
48:04And I got to tell you, his running mate shares his dangerous and backward agenda for this country.
48:17JD Vance literally, literally wrote the foreword for the architect of the Project 2025 agenda.
48:29Like all regular people I grew up with in the heartland, JD studied at Yale, had his career funded by Silicon Valley billionaires,
48:38and then wrote a bestseller trashing that community. Come on!
48:43That's not what middle America is.
48:46And I got to tell you, I can't wait to debate the guy.
49:00That is if he's willing to get off the couch and show up.
49:15I got to tell you, pointing out just an observation of mine that I made, I just have to say it.
49:44You know it, you feel it. These guys are creepy, and yes, just weird as hell.
49:49That's what you see. That's what you see.
49:59So you know what's out there, so say it with me.
50:02We aren't going back. We aren't going back. We are not going back.
50:21So we got 91 days. My God, that's easy.
50:26We'll sleep when we're dead.
50:38Over those next 91 days, and every day in the White House, I'll have Vice President Harris' back, every single day.
50:51And we'll have yours.
50:57You know how this works. We can't do it alone. We need you. Each and every one of you.
