00:00:00You
00:00:30During the latter half of the last century, in the rugged hills and ridges of South Africa's
00:00:59Transvaal, gold was discovered. The result was a rushing, roaring tide of wealth-seekers
00:01:06from all corners of the globe. First came the prospectors, high of hope, simple of purpose,
00:01:14and in their wake swept the next group, the speculators, the adventurers. Then, as inevitable
00:01:21nature itself, there came the final ones, the scavengers, the jackals.
00:03:21Hey, look at that. Hey, look, right through it. Prospector. Let's see. Shanga. I didn't
00:03:47know they were around here. A few. That's all we need is to run into Shanga. Is it like
00:03:56this on all sides? All but one. Then it gets worse. Head off that way and you'll hit wasteland
00:04:02even a jackal couldn't cross.
00:04:46I wonder if she's got any plans after she gets through riding that horse. What'll it
00:05:16be? Well, this is a whiskey saloon, isn't it? We sell whiskey. We have whiskey. Out,
00:05:26you. Give him one. Isn't necessary. That looked like a police patrol we saw as we came in.
00:05:34Of course, they were some distance off. They're in, announce. By the way, where is he? Your
00:05:41commandant. He's around. No, he isn't. He went out to collect taxes or something. I saw him go.
00:05:51You fellows planning on being in town long? Depends on what you got to offer. Depends on
00:05:58what you've got on your mind, sonny. Where do you keep your water? There's a well out back.
00:06:04Better fill them up. I'll take care of my own. Hand me a bottle of that. The full one. I really
00:06:24would like to know what she plans to do after she's through riding that horse. Lie down,
00:06:43everybody. Why don't you do as he says? Not you. Open it up.
00:07:43Like robbing a kid's money box. Must say I like that from town. Nice and obliging.
00:08:13Let them go. It'll save us the trouble of hanging them.
00:08:41Those police just can't take country like this. Maybe they've got sense.
00:09:04It is very inconsiderate of old Dirk, getting himself killed like that. He owed me six
00:09:10shillings. I'd feel a lot better if there were six of us instead of five. This wasteland's an
00:09:16unlucky place. A man needs all the odds he can get. Hey, that reminds me. Wouldn't we better be
00:09:22starting back? Right into the loving arms of the police patrol. Are you crazy? That's a good 70
00:09:32miles across this wasteland. Maybe more. And drier than a rock. It's just a place and a place can be
00:09:38crossed. Speak for yourself. I'm going back as soon as it gets dark. Well, that's up to you.
00:09:46There's your share. Make your choice.
00:11:46Never thought I'd have to come to this, but I guess I'm going to have to trade some whiskey
00:12:14for some water. Are you going to trade me some water for a good swig of real nice whiskey?
00:12:44My horse has gone lame. All right, let's give them all a rest.
00:13:14Oh, poor feet. Were they hurt, I didn't know better. I'd say it was going to rain.
00:13:27Stoffel. Yes, stretcher? Bring your horse up here.
00:13:31Kind of noble, aren't you? A horse is a useful animal. There's no use letting him suffer because
00:13:50he belongs to a jackass. Looks like he's not the only jackass around here. I told you we'd never
00:13:58make it. No one said that you had to come. You know, the real funny thing was Stoffel there.
00:14:10Nearly 300 pounds in his pocket and he can't even buy himself a drink of water.
00:14:15Hey, Stoffel. Yeah? See that little old lizard there? Even he's better off than you are.
00:14:33Yeah? A lot better off. That isn't right.
00:14:38You had no reason to do that. What's eating you? Just a lizard. Wasn't doing any harm.
00:14:46See, what's got into you anyway? A lizard. Shut up. All this fuss over one lousy little lizard.
00:14:56If I don't have a drink of water pretty soon, I'm just going to fall down and die.
00:15:00Yeah, it looks that way.
00:15:31So
00:15:54put that back. Give it to me. Give it to me.
00:15:57Give it to me! Give it to me!
00:15:59My water! Give it to me!
00:16:01Give it to me!
00:16:03Give him his water bottle!
00:16:05It's my water!
00:16:07Give it to me! Give it to me!
00:16:09Give it to me! Give it to me!
00:16:13And cut it out!
00:16:15And you too.
00:16:17You shouldn't have done that, Stretch.
00:16:19You might have hurt me.
00:16:21Come on, boy! Come on!
00:16:27You can make it! Come on, boy!
00:16:29Come on!
00:16:31Come on!
00:16:33You can make it! Come on, boy!
00:16:35No, he can't.
00:16:37I can't just leave him like this.
00:16:41That's right.
00:16:51Stretch!
00:17:01He's your horse.
00:17:21He's your horse.
00:17:51I think I see a village.
00:18:13It's a village.
00:18:21Water!
00:18:51Water!
00:19:11It's a dead one.
00:19:27A goat.
00:19:51It's a dead one.
00:20:15We've just come to the wasteland.
00:20:17We need water badly.
00:20:21There's a spring here.
00:20:23But you'll never make it.
00:20:25You just pointed out.
00:20:27We'll make it.
00:20:29It's behind those rocks.
00:20:31At the head of the street.
00:20:45Get up.
00:20:47Water.
00:21:15Water.
00:21:35Water.
00:21:51Anybody home?
00:21:53What about me coming in for a minute?
00:21:55Stay where you are.
00:21:59What are you scared of?
00:22:01Nothing.
00:22:03Then what are you carrying that rifle for?
00:22:08We don't plan on shooting anybody.
00:22:15What do you want?
00:22:17Something to eat.
00:22:19How long are you going to stay here?
00:22:21Four or five days. It's hard to say.
00:22:24It's not far to Punfontein. You can make it without much trouble.
00:22:27The horses need rest and so do we.
00:22:30I don't have enough in the house to feed five men.
00:22:33We've got money if that's what bothers you.
00:22:35I don't want your money. I just want you to get out of here.
00:22:37We plan to. But in the meantime, we can't live on fresh air.
00:22:41Oh, look, lady. I don't know why I'm standing here arguing with you.
00:22:44There are five of us and we usually take what we want.
00:22:48Not from around here.
00:22:55Okay. That's the way you feel about it.
00:22:58I don't like women.
00:23:01I wouldn't go stirring up trouble with that girl if I was you, young fella.
00:23:08It's all right, Opa.
00:23:11Your grandfather, huh?
00:23:14He the one that taught you to punch like that?
00:23:17It's going to come in mighty handy when you get married.
00:23:19Yeah, he is. He's hard as nails, all right.
00:23:23The Shunguns used to call her Ubalaba.
00:23:25Not a little tough one.
00:23:27The Shunguns?
00:23:28Yeah. Not bad people once you get to understand them.
00:23:34Any of them around here?
00:23:36Oh, yeah. Yeah, from time to time.
00:23:41Come on, Opa.
00:23:42Just a minute.
00:23:45What about that food?
00:23:47Do we get a piece of blear, don't we?
00:23:49I reckon we might arrange for one night, eh, Willie, seeing as what a flat belly he's got.
00:23:56I'll send a couple of my boys up after him.
00:24:05You shouldn't have given in to him that easy, Opa.
00:24:07I know what I'm doing, Willie. I know what I'm doing.
00:24:11Don't feed him and right away they begin suspecting things.
00:24:15Now you just act as if nothing had happened and leave it up to me.
00:24:45What are you going to all that trouble for, Dandy?
00:24:52You hardly had a look at her.
00:24:54Oh, he had a look, all right.
00:24:56But it was kind of a worm's eye view, eating dust at her feet.
00:25:06What do you suppose a girl like her is doing in a place like this anyway?
00:25:09The old man's a prospector, most likely.
00:25:12Little loony. Lots of old-timers like that all through this area.
00:25:15Now, but her. Somebody's got to look after the old fool.
00:25:18Hey, look.
00:25:20Oh.
00:25:34Kind of pretty.
00:25:35Oh, lovely sway to her hips.
00:25:38And the way she, uh, tucks in that shirt.
00:25:45Better let me give you a hand with that.
00:25:46This thing's kind of heavy.
00:25:48I can manage.
00:25:58All right.
00:26:02Just the same.
00:26:04Somebody ought to help you carry that bucket up to the house.
00:26:08Well, now, wait a minute, lady.
00:26:11You, uh, you don't mean you'd shoot a big, handsome foe like me?
00:26:16If you want to shoot somebody, well, pick a Stoffel and a Rico, then.
00:26:19You can see they don't amount to much.
00:26:21I told you once.
00:26:24Well, as long as I'm going your way anyhow.
00:26:27You heard her.
00:26:29Sit down.
00:26:30But I was just.
00:26:31Shut up.
00:26:32I got a right.
00:26:33Shut up.
00:27:01Some people have to be hit in the head with an axe.
00:27:18Now, listen.
00:27:21All of you.
00:27:24I'm planning on staying here three or four days.
00:27:26Till the horses get their legs back.
00:27:29I don't want any unnecessary trouble.
00:27:33Stay away from these people.
00:27:35Listen, you aren't telling me.
00:27:36Yes, I am.
00:27:38I'm not talking just to hear my own voice.
00:27:41I'm ordering you.
00:27:46If I find anybody messing around that house.
00:27:49Somebody's going to get hurt.
00:27:52Is that clear?
00:27:57Does that include you, too?
00:28:00That includes everybody.
00:28:07There's that old saloon down at the end of town.
00:28:10We'll sleep there.
00:28:12It's cold around here at night.
00:28:57Where are you going?
00:28:58Outside.
00:29:00I'll sleep with this fetid snoring like a wounded elephant.
00:29:05Turn over.
00:29:12Turn over.
00:29:22Awfully quiet tonight, isn't it?
00:29:31I thought Dandy might be out here.
00:29:36Am I going to hit the roof if he gets any place with that girl?
00:29:40From what I saw, she'll tear him in two if he tries anything.
00:30:39What are you doing here?
00:30:47I'm looking for one of my men.
00:30:49I told you if anybody came up here, they were asking to get shot.
00:30:53I wish you wouldn't keep pointing that gun at me.
00:30:56Women haven't any business with guns.
00:30:58They may shoot somebody they don't mean to.
00:31:01Not me.
00:31:05You know, if you prettied yourself up a little bit, you might almost look like a female.
00:31:31What?
00:31:56I just wanted to show you how safe you'd be if I really wanted to get rough.
00:32:00You smell.
00:32:02Even animals are cleaner than you are.
00:32:10Didn't anybody ever tell you before that you smell bad?
00:32:20Willie.
00:32:22Willie.
00:32:23Willie, what happened?
00:32:24It's nothing, old boy.
00:32:25It's just...
00:32:26I just caught someone prowling around out here.
00:32:28Did you get him good?
00:32:30I should've.
00:32:33It's a good thing for you that you can shoot straight, young fella.
00:32:37Of course, women would've lost their heads and you would've been a goner.
00:32:40Not every girl can miss that close on purpose.
00:32:45Need any help?
00:32:49No.
00:32:57Better get back inside now, Willie.
00:33:00He ain't gonna be bothering nobody else tonight.
00:33:04He's gonna...
00:33:05He's gonna be kind of dizzy.
00:33:11Hey, Willie.
00:33:20How come you shoot him?
00:33:22I don't know.
00:33:25He grabbed me.
00:33:28He made me feel...
00:33:30I don't know.
00:33:33I wish I'd let him die of thirst when he first came here.
00:34:03What were you doing up there?
00:34:23Looking for you.
00:34:25Evidently, you didn't hear what I said about staying away from that girl.
00:34:28Hey, you...
00:34:30Sure you did?
00:34:32Anyway, I wasn't bothering about her.
00:34:35Just...
00:34:37Nosing around, following up a hunch.
00:34:41What kind of a hunch?
00:34:43Gold.
00:34:46Look, it doesn't make any sense.
00:34:48An old man and a young girl like her living up here all alone?
00:34:51Just for their health?
00:34:53Eh, sure enough.
00:34:55They've got a half a dozen cradles and a big sluice box
00:34:58at the bottom of a ravine back at the house.
00:35:01There's a little hut down there.
00:35:04What makes you think it's just nuts and old equipment like everything else that's hanging around here?
00:35:08Because it isn't like everything else.
00:35:10It's been used recently.
00:35:13So's the hut.
00:35:15At least it's had visitors.
00:35:18Shungun.
00:35:21Yeah.
00:35:22I could smell them the moment I opened the door.
00:35:31All right, suppose they have found gold.
00:35:33What of it?
00:35:35There's more lying around in the banks.
00:35:36Any little dab, they might have found.
00:35:38Well, maybe it isn't so little.
00:35:45Well, we're not sticking around to find out.
00:35:47I'm moving on as soon as the horses are fit.
00:35:51Yeah, well, I don't know about you, but I'm getting a little tired of this robbery business.
00:35:55I've got a bullet floating around me just here.
00:35:58Some small-time gambler who
00:36:00yawned like a stuck pig just because he'd dropped a few quid.
00:36:04Claimed he'd been cheated.
00:36:06Which he had.
00:36:07I don't know what I ever told you, but I used to run a well-paying little roulette wheel.
00:36:11Hyden Kimberley.
00:36:14Best-looking woman in the district.
00:36:16Looking after me hand and foot.
00:36:19And bang, along comes this greenhorn, puts a bullet in me.
00:36:24And when I got up and on my feet again,
00:36:27the money was all gone.
00:36:30Her, too.
00:36:32So I wind up with a down-to-the-heel card shop
00:36:36with one bad lung, looking for a stake.
00:36:40But I told him I'd be back, looted.
00:36:44And I intend to do it.
00:36:46And maybe this is the time for it.
00:36:52I'm not interested.
00:36:59I just thought I'd mention it.
00:37:02Need any help getting back to the bar?
00:37:05I'm spending the rest of the night here.
00:37:08What about the animals?
00:37:10I'll risk it.
00:37:12Well, they're probably no more dangerous than some women at that.
00:37:17See you tomorrow, Strick.
00:37:42I'll be back.
00:38:01Hyden can fat your hut and trick.
00:38:04Fat your hut and trick.
00:38:06For there a fat your hut and trick.
00:38:08Huck to the boss of the club, prepare the yanny,
00:38:10with the hoop and bin.
00:38:12Swadra, all on the ink and swadra.
00:38:15All on the ink and swadra.
00:38:17All on the ink and fat your hut and trick.
00:38:20Oh, now, wait a minute, boss, now, wait a minute, look.
00:38:23I was only doing the same as the other fellas.
00:38:25And what's that?
00:38:27Looking for the old man's gold.
00:38:29Like Dandy said.
00:38:31Where's the old man and the girl now?
00:38:33Oh, up at the hill somewhere.
00:38:35They skedaddled as soon as they heard us coming.
00:38:38Put that down and come with me.
00:38:41All right, boss, all right.
00:38:54Get in there so I can see what you're doing.
00:39:06So you fellas have decided on a new leader, huh?
00:39:09We want that gold, that's all.
00:39:11Dandy said you weren't interested, so we took a vote and...
00:39:13And elected Dandy, is that it?
00:39:17Well, it just so happens that votes don't mean a thing to me.
00:39:20If you want to get rid of me, you're going to have to run me out.
00:39:24But, Stretch, you haven't any objections to being rich, have you?
00:39:27We're not arguing about that.
00:39:29We're talking about who's boss.
00:39:36Huh.
00:39:40Personally, I don't care who's boss.
00:39:47Just so long as we get that gold.
00:39:50Now you're talking!
00:39:59Looks like they've got gold, all right.
00:40:01That's what I've been telling you.
00:40:04All right, then we'll get it.
00:40:06But my way, understand?
00:40:11Hey, Willie, there's no sense in banging away at them like that.
00:40:15You're only going to use up good bullets.
00:40:17If I could just get one of them, they might change their minds.
00:40:23It's going to get hot up in that hill, so we'll just let some of the fight boil out first.
00:40:27What are we, a bunch of scared rabbits?
00:40:30There are five of us.
00:40:32We can root them out now, storm them.
00:40:36Go ahead.
00:40:38It'll leave that much more for the rest of us.
00:40:40Are you sure you're not worried about somebody else getting killed?
00:40:45Like a girl, for instance?
00:40:47There's more than one way to root them out.
00:40:49You and Guts, you get in the house and see if they've got any ammunition.
00:40:52They couldn't have taken it all up there.
00:40:54You, Mariko, you look around the shack.
00:41:02Oh!
00:41:13Ooh, that's a hot sun.
00:41:15Almost enough to tempt a man to drink water.
00:41:26Hey, Willie, look.
00:41:28Look, there's one of them.
00:41:30He's carrying a flag of truth, so they'll try anything.
00:41:35Hey, Willie, it don't seem fair to shoot a man who's got a white flag in his hand, now does it?
00:41:41I'll teach them to come around here chasing us out of our house.
00:41:45Oh, wait till he gets up closer.
00:41:47Then you can't miss him if he gets nasty.
00:41:50Hee, hee, hee.
00:41:57That's close enough.
00:42:01This is the only white shirt we have in the outfit.
00:42:04Belongs to Dandy, and he's sort of particular.
00:42:07He doesn't want to get it dirty.
00:42:10Look, I've shaved.
00:42:15Change my shirt.
00:42:19I smell like a lily.
00:42:23I even combed my hair right around that part you gave me.
00:42:29What do you want?
00:42:31I thought maybe you and I could make a deal.
00:42:36The only deal we'll make with you is to get out of Yellow Rock and stay out.
00:42:41Or we'll shoot the lot of you.
00:42:43Those bullets of yours, they're not gonna last forever.
00:42:46We found your ammunition.
00:42:48So as soon as you use up the ones you've got, my boys are coming up to get you.
00:42:53At least you won't be among them.
00:42:56You mean you're gonna shoot a man with a flag of truce?
00:43:00All I see is a thief!
00:43:03Look, nobody wants to hurt you.
00:43:06Not if they can help it.
00:43:08But we know you've got gold, and we're gonna get it.
00:43:11So come on back to the house, tell us where it's hidden.
00:43:14Maybe we'll cut you in for some.
00:43:17Ask him what kind of a deal, will he?
00:43:20You can't make a deal with people like that, Opa.
00:43:23Any kind of a deal is better than nothing, will it?
00:43:26Anyway, it won't do no harm to ask him.
00:43:28Sit down with your hands in sight!
00:43:32We haven't decided what we're gonna do with you yet.
00:43:37Opa!
00:43:38Get down, Willie!
00:43:44Get down!
00:43:55Get down!
00:44:09Get down!
00:44:14It's just below the knee.
00:44:16Oh, it's bleeding badly, we gotta get you to the house.
00:44:19I've bled before.
00:44:20Tighter, come on, tighter.
00:44:32Hold your fire!
00:44:34They're giving up!
00:44:40And get up there, somebody's been hit!
00:44:43I hope it's not that girl.
00:44:46They've got a different future picked out for her.
00:44:50I've seen a lot worse than that.
00:44:52Didn't even break a bone.
00:44:54I don't believe there's even a bullet to probe for.
00:44:56Just a hole in the leg.
00:44:59Probing is usually a two-bottle job.
00:45:03You'll have to excuse us, miss.
00:45:05You see, we're used to seeing men get shot.
00:45:08It's just that the boys forgot to remember that this is your grandfather.
00:45:12And the only grandfather you've got.
00:45:15Please, why don't you just leave?
00:45:17Can't you see he wants to get some sleep?
00:45:20I think we ought to get this deal settled now.
00:45:23Where's the gold?
00:45:25He can't talk to you right now.
00:45:27Tomorrow, when he feels better, he'll tell you anything you want to know.
00:45:30It's all right, Willie, it's all right.
00:45:32We might as well get it over with.
00:45:34Next thing you know, they'll be twisting my arm for me.
00:45:38Have you ever had anybody twist your arm for you, Willie?
00:45:42You don't feel good?
00:45:44Go get me my pipe.
00:45:55I, um...
00:45:57I don't suppose you boys would believe me if I told you that, um...
00:46:01We don't have any gold.
00:46:04Hmm?
00:46:06Well, that's what I thought.
00:46:08You just keep looking for it until you made a nuisance of yourselves.
00:46:12Until somebody got killed. Now, wouldn't you, huh?
00:46:15Just about.
00:46:18Yeah, yeah.
00:46:20Well, uh, suppose I told you that we, um...
00:46:24We do have some gold, but, uh...
00:46:29I'm not gonna tell you where it is.
00:46:33Ha, ha, ha!
00:46:35Now, you wouldn't do a mean thing like that to us, would you, Opa?
00:46:41Oh, yeah.
00:46:53The things people will do for gold.
00:46:58Let me tell you fellas a little history first, huh?
00:47:01Fifteen years ago, when they first discovered gold up here...
00:47:05Hmm.
00:47:07The men roared in like a swarm of locusts.
00:47:12Me and Willie here, well, she was just a baby then, and me, well, I was a young fella myself.
00:47:17Not a day over 50. Well, anyhow...
00:47:20We were a little late joining the others, and no sooner did we settle down, then...
00:47:25The vein ran out.
00:47:28The town dried up just about as fast as it boomed.
00:47:32But, uh, we didn't go.
00:47:35Well, not because we didn't have any place in particular to go.
00:47:39Oh, it's just that I got something in my brain.
00:47:43You see, I got the idea that maybe they'd overlooked a vein or two.
00:47:48And after a few years of digging myself half to the bone, I found out I was right.
00:47:54And then it got me some help.
00:47:57Boo, he's the, uh, Shangan chief up here in the district that I got to know.
00:48:03He, uh, lent me a couple of his boys.
00:48:06Then things began to hum.
00:48:13You know, I've been smoking a pipe for 50 years, and I still have trouble with my puffer.
00:48:27What were we talking about?
00:48:29Gold.
00:48:32Gold.
00:48:34Gold.
00:48:37Yeah, it's a very dangerous thing if you want it out of pure greed.
00:48:42I've seen many a man ruined by it.
00:48:46Now, me, I had a good reason for wanting it.
00:48:49Because Willie here, well, I'm all that she's got.
00:48:52Naturally, I had to see to it that she'd be taken care of when I died.
00:48:57Come to the point, will you?
00:48:59What about our deal?
00:49:01Hmm?
00:49:02What's your idea of a deal?
00:49:04Depends on how much you have.
00:49:07Ooh.
00:49:09Don't tell him anything more.
00:49:11But, Willie, I thought when you gave up that you...
00:49:14I had to do something. I couldn't let you stay up on that mountain and die.
00:49:17Look, lady, I've been trying to be patient with you.
00:49:20That money's yours.
00:49:22I've seen how hard you've worked and sweated for it.
00:49:25They've got no right to it.
00:49:28But you don't understand that, do you?
00:49:30Because you're no good, none of you.
00:49:32You're just born takers.
00:49:35You still haven't told us how much you've got.
00:49:37It's not just the money.
00:49:39Look at him!
00:49:41He's an old man.
00:49:42All he's dreamed about is seeing this town come to life again with people living and working.
00:49:48And stores open.
00:49:49And the stage coming through from Punt Fontaine.
00:49:51And all because of him.
00:49:53And what he's done.
00:50:02You see, Willie,
00:50:04they don't understand a word you said.
00:50:10What about 50-50?
00:50:1350-50 of how much?
00:50:1720,000 pounds, more or less.
00:50:2420,000 pounds?
00:50:26About that.
00:50:38I think we can make a deal.
00:50:41Where is it?
00:50:44Show him where it is, Willie.
00:50:46Go on, show him.
00:51:00It's in the mouth of that mine up there.
00:51:02This morning when you came here, we went up and knocked out a few timbers.
00:51:06It's buried now.
00:51:08If you want it, you'll have to dig for it.
00:51:10One dig!
00:51:17Oh, my back!
00:51:19Feels like it's busted.
00:51:21From now on, I'm going to keep robbing banks.
00:51:23I don't think there's that dandy doing any work, do you?
00:51:25He wouldn't be any good anyway with that drug of his.
00:51:27Besides, someone's got to keep an eye on that girl and the old man.
00:51:31It bothers me.
00:51:33He may keep too close an eye on her.
00:51:36Why don't you forget about that girl?
00:51:38As soon as you get your hands on all this gold,
00:51:40she won't look better than a broken-down hag.
00:51:43That's a dirty lie!
00:51:45She'll never look anything but pretty.
00:51:48Well, of all the...
00:51:50You too?
00:52:08Oh, man!
00:52:39Go on!
00:52:46Go on, break her!
00:52:48She ain't got no gun now.
00:52:50So she's all yours!
00:52:52Go on, show her how to break her!
00:53:04Why, you dirty...
00:53:09You dirty...
00:53:22Let him go!
00:53:24Let him go!
00:53:28Let him go!
00:53:38Let him go!
00:53:41Let him up!
00:53:43I'm not letting anybody up!
00:53:45He hit me, and I'm gonna give it to him!
00:53:47Give it!
00:54:08Give it!
00:54:15You fellas just won't listen to me, will you?
00:54:18It wasn't my fault.
00:54:20She came down here swinging herself like a pendulum.
00:54:23Ask Stoffel.
00:54:24Yeah, that's right, boss.
00:54:26Looks like she was asking for trouble.
00:54:28From now on, you stay away from my men.
00:54:30And stop swinging your hips all over the place.
00:54:39I don't know what you're so sore about.
00:54:41She's just a girl.
00:54:43I'm not gonna argue about it.
00:55:08I've been looking for you everywhere.
00:55:12You've got a wife, you've got a family.
00:55:18You've got nothing of value,
00:55:21because I can't see it.
00:55:25You're a faithful lover,
00:55:29a boy of diamonds.
00:55:31Faithful lover,
00:55:34for as long as I live.
00:55:37What does it mean,
00:55:40a boy of diamonds?
00:55:43You're a faithful lover,
00:55:46and I'm gonna die.
00:55:52Are you still worried about what happened this afternoon?
00:55:54No.
00:55:55Well, if you're mad at me...
00:55:57I'm not mad at anybody.
00:56:01Oh, just thinking, eh?
00:56:05That house up there
00:56:07keeps reminding me of our place back home,
00:56:09in Marico.
00:56:12I can just see my mother now,
00:56:14standing on the back stoop,
00:56:15calling me to come in from whatever I was doing.
00:56:18My father yelling at me.
00:56:20You wash your hands before supper, son,
00:56:22the way you've been taught, you hear?
00:56:26And all of us sitting down,
00:56:29him saying grace,
00:56:30thanking the Lord for protecting us.
00:56:34Poor boy.
00:56:36I was afraid of that.
00:56:37You're in love!
00:56:38Who says anything about love?
00:56:42Just remembering the family, that's all.
00:56:45Oh, yeah.
00:56:46Yeah.
00:56:47Yeah.
00:56:48I'm a lonely man,
00:56:52and I'm growing old.
00:56:56Spent my youth
00:56:59searching for gold.
00:57:03Got no wife, got no family,
00:57:07got nothing of value,
00:57:10cause I couldn't see
00:57:13that true love
00:57:17is worth more than diamonds.
00:57:21True love lasts longer than gold.
00:57:28What's the use of gold and diamonds?
00:57:33They can't buy me true love.
00:57:37Now I'm growing old.
00:57:40Once I knew a girl.
00:57:43To me she did cling.
00:57:47All she wanted
00:57:50was a gold wedding ring.
00:57:54I swore I would make her one
00:57:57when I struck gold,
00:58:00but I, I never struck it.
00:58:04Now I'm too old.
00:58:07True love,
00:58:11I never found it.
00:58:14True love,
00:58:17she couldn't wait.
00:58:21Spent my life searching.
00:58:24I never could find
00:58:27true love, gold or diamonds.
00:58:31Now it's too late.
00:58:51No, please.
00:59:11Why? I thought you were enjoying it.
00:59:13We haven't any right kissing each other, you and me.
00:59:16Look, lady, this is nothing that you argue about.
00:59:19Wait a minute. Where are you going?
00:59:22Grandpa will be missing me.
00:59:24You can't be in that much of a hurry.
00:59:27His leg hurts him.
00:59:29He's worried.
00:59:31What about?
00:59:33You running off with all the gold and leaving us with nothing.
00:59:36I gave him my word, didn't I?
00:59:39Your word.
00:59:49Hey.
01:00:12What's he doing here, Willie?
01:00:14I don't know.
01:00:16I just thought I'd drop by to see how you're getting along.
01:00:19Sit down.
01:00:25I thought it might ease your mind about that gold if you knew something about me.
01:00:29Oh?
01:00:31What kind of something?
01:00:34Well, that I come from a good family and, uh,
01:00:37when I give my word, I mean it.
01:00:42My people were all farmers. Sound stock.
01:00:46The only trouble was that there was quite a war going on all around us.
01:00:50All the time that I was growing up.
01:00:53I suppose you could say we were caught in the middle.
01:00:55Sometimes it seems to me I've had a gun in my hand since I was so high.
01:01:00Somebody shooting at us or we shooting at them.
01:01:03Chasing somebody or being chased.
01:01:06Then a few years ago, a epidemic got both my mother and father.
01:01:11And I had to take over the farm the best that I could.
01:01:14What there was left to take over.
01:01:16Hmm?
01:01:18What did you farm? I mean, what kind of crops?
01:01:22Whatever the good Lord would allow us to grow.
01:01:25That's the way my mother used to put it.
01:01:28Oh, she was a great one for religion, all right?
01:01:31Church was ten miles away, but she'd go every Sunday.
01:01:34Winter or summer.
01:01:39I could read the Bible by the time I was seven.
01:01:42We had one of those thick ones with all the family births and marriages and deaths in it.
01:01:50Why are you telling us all this?
01:01:53Oh, to ease your grandpa's mind, I suppose.
01:01:57With him laid up like that, I could see how he'd be getting a little worried.
01:02:01Losing confidence.
01:02:03All I can say is that I'm sticking to our deal.
01:02:07I've seen some pretty powerful lies in my time.
01:02:11Hmm?
01:02:13Now, if you ain't telling the truth...
01:02:15It's a Bible over there, isn't it?
01:02:17Yes.
01:02:23I haven't seen one of these in years.
01:02:26I hereby swear in this holy book that I'm going to go through with our deal to the letter.
01:02:32Young man, if you don't mean it, I can't see any point in your coming in here blaspheming.
01:02:38Now, come here!
01:02:46Shake hands.
01:02:53Well, I guess I'd better be going.
01:03:02Uh...
01:03:04Do you have another name besides Willie?
01:03:07That's short for Wilhelmina.
01:03:10Wilhelmina Adelaide Decker.
01:03:13Hawkins is mine.
01:03:15Roger Hawkins.
01:03:22Growing up in the middle of a war like that, it's enough to upset any boy.
01:03:27It's enough to upset any boy.
01:03:29Set him off on the wrong foot.
01:03:33But I've known a lot worse fellows than him to keep their word.
01:03:39I'm going to turn your light out now.
01:03:41It's time for you to go to sleep.
01:03:54Come on, let's get it!
01:03:58Come on.
01:04:02We've been cheated!
01:04:04Maybe it's under some loose dirt someplace.
01:04:13I think I...
01:04:15Yes! Yes! Here it is!
01:04:18Wait. Wait a minute.
01:04:23We've got it! We've got it!
01:04:28We've got it! We've got it!
01:04:31We've got it! We've got it!
01:04:34Get out of here!
01:04:36Get out!
01:04:58What's that for?
01:05:02You know what I'm going to do?
01:05:04I'm going to buy about 300 cases of this.
01:05:08Hey, look at that!
01:05:10What's that?
01:05:12Holy Moses!
01:05:14Shango!
01:05:27Holy Moses!
01:05:57Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait!
01:06:00Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait!
01:06:03Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait!
01:06:06Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait!
01:06:09Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait!
01:06:14What I don't understand is why they haven't rushed us.
01:06:17Probably they just haven't worked themselves up enough.
01:06:19We'd better try and find out what they're going to do.
01:06:22Wait a minute! What about all that gold?
01:06:25You carry it.
01:06:45The rest of you stay here. I'll get back to you as soon as I can.
01:06:55Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait!
01:07:25Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait!
01:07:28Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait!
01:07:32Wait! Wait! Wait! Wait!
01:07:36Wait! Wait! Wait!
01:07:48That was quite a meeting you just had.
01:07:51The Shanghans sure love to hear themselves talk.
01:07:55Evidently, they're not the only ones.
01:07:57All right, turn them loose on us.
01:07:59They may get us, but we'll get our share of them before they do.
01:08:03Why do you think that I would turn a bunch of riled-up Shanghans loose on you, especially after our deal?
01:08:09They're friends of yours, aren't they?
01:08:11And you sent for them, didn't you?
01:08:13Why shouldn't we send for them? That's what you'd do if you were in our place, isn't it?
01:08:17Well, did you or didn't you?
01:08:20I didn't even know they were within 50 miles of here.
01:08:23I didn't even know that a couple of them came here yesterday morning.
01:08:27Now, those are boys who used to work for me, and what happened?
01:08:30Well, they saw you fellows up there at the mine, and they didn't see me, and so they got worried,
01:08:36and so what did they do but go and get their chief?
01:08:40Yeah, that's Timbu, you know, the one I was telling you about.
01:08:44He come in here, and he finds me laid up with a hole in my leg,
01:08:48and believe me, it took a lot of coaxing on my part to convince him that I had done it myself.
01:08:56By accident.
01:08:58He was all set to go charging up that hill after you,
01:09:03but I finally convinced him that you boys was working for me.
01:09:09Oh, I suppose he'd give them a little rest, and then along towards morning they'll start back for us.
01:09:39Ah!
01:09:46Hey, I wonder what those Shamgar are up to now.
01:09:49Maybe Stretch gave the old man a talking to. He's a great one for making deals.
01:09:53It's that honest face of his. One look at him and you say, there goes an honest thief.
01:10:01Now look, for all we know, they may be back, so let's stop gabbing and get in there and load that gold.
01:10:10I wouldn't be in too big of a hurry about that if I were you.
01:10:14Where did you come from?
01:10:16I told you to wait for me behind those rocks, and you didn't do it.
01:10:20Well, uh, Dandy said that...
01:10:24I'm giving the orders around here.
01:10:27We can talk about that later. Right now we want to know what those Shamgar are up to.
01:10:32The old man told them to move out.
01:10:35For good?
01:10:38He must have been shot in the head, not in the leg.
01:10:41Well, let's get loaded up and let's get out of here.
01:10:44Just a minute.
01:10:46Before we talk about loading, there's one thing I want to get straight.
01:10:51What about our deal with the old man?
01:10:53Well, what about it?
01:10:55There's a fortune in there.
01:10:57There's enough for everybody, including the old man and the girl.
01:11:01Now it comes.
01:11:03Up till last night, I figured the same way you fellows did.
01:11:07I just was trying to save us a lot of trouble when I said we'd split 50-50 with them.
01:11:12If it hadn't been for those Shamgars coming in, I suppose I'd feel the same.
01:11:17But the old man played it square. He stuck to his bargain.
01:11:20If it hadn't been for him, we'd be lying around here dead right now.
01:11:25And whether you like it or not, we're going to give them their full share.
01:11:31If that doesn't suit you, then you've got a fight on your hands.
01:11:38It's four to one, Stretch.
01:11:42Nobody wants to see you dead, Stretch.
01:11:45We want that gold and we want all of it.
01:11:49There's plenty more left there.
01:11:51If that girl and the old man want it, they can dig for it.
01:11:55Just the way she told us we could do.
01:11:58I've waited all my life for a killing like this.
01:12:01And I'm not giving half my share to anyone.
01:12:05Damn.
01:12:24Give up now and we'll call it quits.
01:12:29Fan out. We've got to outflank him.
01:12:32Who cares what you think.
01:12:35Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
01:13:02yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
01:13:26yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
01:13:56What are you doing running up and down here?
01:14:07You're hurting me!
01:14:26What happened?
01:14:53Liz and I had a little... argument.
01:14:56About our deal. Couldn't see it your way, huh?
01:15:00No, that's what we thought.
01:15:02Here!
01:15:04Opa, you shouldn't get out of bed!
01:15:06Go away, it's a lot healthier down here.
01:15:08Here, have a slug of this.
01:15:12You should have had him!
01:15:13Ah, that he-go!
01:15:15Nearly drilled us full of holes with that rifle of hers!
01:15:18Come on, let's go back, load up, and get out of here.
01:15:21Spend the rest of your life waiting for Stretch to put a gun in your back?
01:15:24Not me. I want to sleep nights.
01:15:41What'll they do next?
01:15:43It's hard to say with...
01:15:45Ain't no deal to tell them what to do.
01:15:55You've got yourself quite a granddaughter here, mister.
01:16:01Yeah.
01:16:03Yeah, I know.
01:16:07It's her future I'm worrying about.
01:16:10Yeah.
01:16:29Get the horses.
01:16:38It's mighty quiet out there.
01:16:48Does that mean they'll leave?
01:16:51It might.
01:16:53If Danny's got anything to say about it.
01:16:55He's gold crazy.
01:16:58Can't tell about guts.
01:17:00He's got other things on his mind.
01:17:31Guts, you take Stoffel and cover the back door.
01:17:35I'll cover the side window in the front.
01:17:37If he comes out, let him have it.
01:17:38Now, wait a minute.
01:17:40Before anybody starts giving orders around here, let's get one thing straight.
01:17:44I've got first call on that girl. Understand?
01:17:48Who cares about the girl? I do.
01:17:53All right. Go ahead and take her.
01:17:55All I want is that gold. Now get going.
01:18:09What's going on?
01:18:10Get back in there with them.
01:18:17Back door. Be ready to shoot.
01:18:29If they get you and me, what chance do you think she'll have?
01:18:57Hey, Stretch!
01:18:59Are you listening?
01:19:05We know that if we try to blast you out, some of us are gonna get hurt.
01:19:10On the other hand, if we run off with the gold and leave you still alive,
01:19:15we've got sense enough to know that you'll keep looking until you find us.
01:19:20So we've decided to do what you want.
01:19:24Sit with the old man and the girl.
01:19:28Of course, it's not exactly what we'd like to do, but you can't have everything.
01:19:37What do you say?
01:19:39Get down and go open the door.
01:19:43That suits me.
01:19:45Come on in.
01:19:47No use bothering these people anymore.
01:20:04Did you get him?
01:20:06I saw him fall.
01:20:09That good enough for you?
01:20:13That's fine, Goetz.
01:20:27You're a foofy!
01:20:31Hey, lady!
01:20:33Lady, it's me!
01:20:35Stoffel!
01:20:38I got Mariko with me!
01:20:41She's bleeding something awful!
01:20:48It's no trick, lady!
01:20:50I got it in the belly!
01:20:52Looks like the kid's got a paw!
01:20:57Let him in.
01:21:05Let him in!
01:21:16Hey!
01:21:17We thought you were dead!
01:21:19You're wrong.
01:21:24Go stand over there where I can watch you.
01:21:45Stretch.
01:21:53I heard Stretch.
01:21:59I always wanted to get back to see my folks.
01:22:06I heard Stretch.
01:22:15You can't just let him lie there and die.
01:22:37Nothing we can do for him now, miss?
01:22:40Funny, he was the only one that was against our coming here in the first place.
01:22:45What are they going to try next?
01:22:48Get each other, that's about it.
01:22:49And winner take all.
01:22:51Where are they now?
01:22:53Tandy tried to get Goetz at the back of the head, just when he thought he'd got you.
01:22:59Made for town, Goetz following.
01:23:02I suppose he didn't think I was worth bothering about.
01:23:05Where are the horses?
01:23:07In the bar where we put the gold.
01:23:11Where are you going, boss?
01:23:12What do you think?
01:23:15No, Willie.
01:23:19You stay here.
01:23:40Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!
01:24:09Hey!
01:24:39Hey!
01:25:09Hey!
01:25:29Hey!
01:25:49Hey!
01:26:09Hey!
01:26:29Hey!
01:26:49Hey!
01:27:19Hey!
01:27:39Hey!
01:27:59Hey!
01:28:27Hey!
01:28:57Alba!
01:29:12Alba!
01:29:15Alba!
01:29:42Alba!
01:30:04Come on, raise your hands.
01:30:12It's all there, every penny we took.
01:30:23Let me have it.
01:30:26No, no, the hat.
01:30:33How much did you pay for it?
01:30:35Oh, it doesn't matter, you can have it.
01:30:37How much did you pay for it?
01:30:39Why, one pound four.
01:30:50Thank you very much.
01:31:10It's all there.
01:31:15And to think that he's got my hat.
01:31:27Here they come, Alba! Here they come!
01:31:31Anybody following them?
01:31:44Well?
01:31:46We did it.
01:31:48So help me.
01:31:50It hurt, but we did it.
01:32:06I paid for it.
01:32:35I paid for it.
01:33:04I paid for it.
