Transcript
00:00Time to talk to the head coach of the New England Patriots Gerard Mayo brought
00:05to you this week by Northeast Men's Health the experts in treating men's
00:10sexual health with five New England offices or at northeastmenshealth.com
00:16and Gerard Mayo is also brought to you by Hellman's Mayo and we will I will
00:23would you like if I can get it from the Hellman's people would you like a year
00:27supply of mayo Gerard? That would be great that would be great. Are you what is your
00:32what is your number one condiment? Number one, ketchup is always gonna be number one
00:41but mayonnaise is up for second. I can't stand ketchup I would go I would go
00:46mustard. Oh you know what no Mike's hot honey. Oh so good. Well appreciate I know you guys
00:55got back late appreciate you getting up this morning you are we're we're on to
01:01the regular season I wanted to ask you from a head from a head coach view are
01:08you are you used to it now in game wise and are you ready for prime time? You
01:14know the operation from a communication standpoint and you know sub and
01:18operational standpoint I think we I think we're all on the same page the
01:23regular season might be different every game is its own game within itself so
01:27I'm sure some things will pop up throughout the season but I feel pretty
01:30confident about the way the operation is going. Gerard it looks like just based off of
01:36preseason and you know what we see and what we're hearing that Drake May has
01:41outperformed Jacoby Brissett. Why so why is it that it seems like Jacoby Brissett
01:47is still the starting quarterback or quarterback QB one? I would say you know
01:54it's a combination of you know Drake becoming more comfortable and you know
01:58he's climbing the ranks and Jacoby having a better overall command of the
02:02the operation but who knows it may change and you know we said it all along
02:07we got 1A and 1B it's a competition that's definitely a huge conversation
02:11here over the next couple of days of how we want to approach it I would say you
02:15know we came into the preseason with a plan for Drake you know he's a number
02:20three overall pick so you know the expectations and things like that are
02:24high and the pressure from the outside from the fans media will be to put Drake
02:28in but you know after speaking with AVP and Elliott we feel we still feel
02:34confident about the plan we have for Drake now and saying that you know he's
02:38played very he's played very well and what we'll see how that how it looks
02:42here over the next couple days. You mentioned the plan last week with us
02:46can I just ask what what was that plan when you say the plan what what was that?
02:52It was a developmental plan you know the reason that you know we're excited to
02:56get Jacoby here he had a good understanding of the offense and you
03:01know he's a great leader great mentor he could mentor a guy like Drake and also
03:05you know teach him some of the playbook some of the reads and things like that
03:08and you know for us you know we've all seen the horror stories of sometimes
03:13rookie quarterbacks just you know getting thrown to the wolves and and
03:17they fall apart and we didn't want that to happen now I'm not saying that would
03:20happen with Drake at all because he is a mentally tough person and he shows great
03:25resilience and and control of the ball but the plan it's a I'm not gonna get
03:30too in-depth with the plan but just know that you know his development to this
03:35point has worked out the way that we anticipated.
03:38Well I know you guys have talked about a plan and you've kind of been pretty open
03:41the only thing that's kind of confused me a little bit is I might have been
03:44last week where Alex Van Pelt was asked about Jacoby Brissett and Drake Mayne he
03:49kind of said Jacoby Brissett was the starter so I guess maybe you always talk
03:54about plans can change when will we get the official starter for week one I know
04:00you said it would probably be sometime today?
04:03We, I don't want you to be confused first of all yes it actually happens it happens
04:12rather frequently coach. Explain it to me like I'm a fool. Well let me clear it up
04:19you know after after much thought after the cuts I would rather personally
04:25announce who the starting quarterback is to the team before I announce it to
04:30everyone else. We've maintained our stance that Jacoby was QB1 and early on you
04:36know you could see that there was a huge gap between 1A and 1B or I would say two
04:43but now that gap has definitely shrunk here over the last few weeks.
04:47Gerard when it comes to the bottom line when it comes to... Hold on, hold on, Wiggy, Wiggy, Wiggy, Wiggy, are we good on that one?
04:53I want to make sure I want to clear it up. Wiggy's confused because we all sort of are a
05:01little bit because last night you were not able to say that even if Jacoby
05:06Brissett were hurt that Drake May would be your number two essentially. Yeah look
05:13you know let's talk about the injury first I don't know Jacoby may come in
05:17here today at 4 o'clock in the morning may come in today saying you know
05:21shoulder is no good or you know so I'm not going to get too far down the road
05:26on if Jacoby could play or couldn't play what I will say is that this was this is
05:30a or is a true competition it wasn't fluff or anything like that it's a true
05:36competition and I would say at this current point you know Drake has
05:41outplayed Jacoby now I'm saying that we have to take in the full body of work
05:45you know going all the way back to the spring and the beginning of training camp
05:48and we'll see where we end up but those are the conversations that will happen
05:51here over the next couple of days. I said something a few moments ago that some
05:56believe I would not say to your face when you're on this show I'm gonna say
05:59it right now because we're not we're not we're not in the same room so I'm not
06:03afraid I will be afraid later. You shouldn't be. To this fans naked eye
06:09this O-line stinks. Is that a factor when it comes to this like you don't
06:18want a guy to go in there like Drake May who you may not have the optimum O-line
06:23for him right now? I would say you always want to support a looking quarterback no
06:28matter who it is with the great O-line and receivers that can catch the ball
06:31and make things right and run and make big plays all those things right now the
06:36O-line is continuing to try to jail you know pre-snap penalties aside I thought
06:42they did some good things last night as well especially in a run game but you
06:45know to your point you want those guys you want the quarterback to feel
06:48comfortable back there no matter who it is it could be Brady back there or it
06:52could be it could be Drake May I don't know but you want those guys to be
06:55comfortable behind the offensive line and we still have some time and I
06:59understand the season is really you know a couple weeks away but we still have
07:04some time for the quarterbacks to build that trust in the offensive line and
07:07also the coaching staff and the players you know that's one of those positions
07:11offensive line as a whole where you know it's not always like putting the best
07:15person at an individual spot it's about what combination of guys and I think I
07:20said this before what combination of guys give us the best chance to win
07:24football games now I'm saying that when you ask me like what what success looks
07:28like is that we just get better each and every week and that we're trending in
07:32the right way we should be a better football team you know in the second in
07:36the second in October than we are in September or November than we are in
07:39October and and that's the plan and if we do that and we're playing good
07:43football at the end of the year and the line and really everyone defensively
07:47offensively and special teams that we're playing great complementary football and
07:51that we're winning football games so that's that's really the North Star and
07:54the way that I should say we think about it as an organization do you wish you
08:00had done more to address the o-line in the offseason we felt like we found the
08:06best o-line and free agency and might and big Mike all right that's number one
08:11now his versatility whether it's guard or tackle that's another conversation
08:14but we did address the o-line I would also say looking out the front windshield
08:19that we have an opportunity to improve our team through the waiver wire and
08:24we're in a very unique situation right now where we're third on the waiver wire
08:28and there'll be some good players that get released from their team and we're
08:32gonna try to take advantage of that and like I said like you know the starting
08:37guard or the starting tackle may not be on our team today but we'll see here
08:41over the next couple of days what we're able to pick up Gerard I do think that a
08:44lot of people are just going back and forth on wondering if you guys keeping
08:48Drake May from being the starter is more so you feel like Jacoby could win you
08:53guys more games or if it's you don't want Drake May to get hurt can you can
08:58you clarify on as a head coach where you stand on that yeah I can look you
09:03can't take insurance out on players and this is coming from a guy who was on IR
09:07three times so you can't you can't take insurance out on players but once once
09:13Drake is ready to go or how we you know kind of evaluate the quarterback
09:18position he'll go out there and play we can't sit here and say well you know the
09:22O-line this O-line that if Drake is the better player I mean if Drake wins the
09:29competition he'll be the first he'll be the starting quarterback and once again
09:32we have to go back this is the hard part we have to go back and look at the total
09:36body of work to see what that looks like going forward it does from the outside
09:41looking in look like he's pretty confident out there even last night when
09:45his shoe fell off he didn't miss a beat he didn't pick one target to just go at
09:49over and over again he didn't discriminate when it came to his
09:51receivers he seemed confident out there no I totally agree with you and he's
09:57going through his reach and progressions and every every day has he's gotten
10:01better and and I'm you know I'm proud of him really for the way that it's a
10:06testament to his work ethic and just you know wanting to get better and I hope it
10:10continues maybe you can clear this up from your perspective because there's so
10:16much confusion there's a lot of smoke and mirrors there's a lot of smoke and
10:25mirrors too but it's Monday either it's always harder on and you what times you
10:30guys get back like three last night but I'm on the radio with you guys thanks
10:38Hellman yeah when it when it comes to issues that Drake may may have had last
10:43night when it came to the snap or prior preseason game you put those more on the
10:49quarterback the center the the operation like we'll have a conversation today
10:55about it but look it's always two people anytime the snap is on the ground it's
10:59the center and the quarterback or the center or the quarterback and those are
11:02things that fundamentally frustrate you and fundamentally we just have to get
11:06right there were too many times last night that we were just going backwards
11:11whether it's a bad snap or whether it's a pre-snap penalty and we have to clean
11:16that up if we want to have a chance to win football games and you know we've
11:18always said the saying around here has always been you can't win until you keep
11:22from losing and last night was one of those instances where we just couldn't
11:26get out of our own way you know over a hundred and fifty yards penalties you
11:30know and really they were the penalties were being called on both sides of the
11:33ball and one thing I would say is we always operate under you know let's do
11:38business as business is being done and failed to do that last night and it's my
11:42job ultimately to make sure that we have a disciplined football team out there
11:46that that is fundamentally sound and doesn't have those pre-snap type of
11:51times all right speaking of Hellman's time now for the Hellman's Mayo question
11:55of the week which rookies progress so far this season has impressed you the
12:00most coach um I guess the easy answer would be Drake May but I'm gonna go with
12:07poke I'm gonna go with PZ because I think he is a he has the chance to be a
12:13very good football player and has natural leadership instincts and he's
12:18been a very impressive guy thus far Gerard real quick who are who are the
12:23leaders on this team I mean obviously I'm assuming David Andrews but when it
12:26comes to leaders who's standing out so far yeah I mean one thing I would say
12:32is that's for the players to decide and I believe that the leaders the captains
12:36should be voted on by their peers I know who's in my mind is they know our great
12:41leaders on the team but that's that's to the that's for the team to decide and
12:46we'll see going forward Gerard one thing I don't subscribe to you know that you
12:51know some people might have around here is you know first year head coach all
12:56the coaching staff is new you talked about pre-snap penalties and a lot of
13:01the times you know at least from my playing experience experience pre-snap
13:07penalties is about guys focusing in and locking in and understanding what's
13:11going on what what do you see you talked about it a little bit what do you think
13:16is leading to some of those pre-snap penalties that maybe because you talked
13:22about telling them over and over and over and the referees made mentions
13:26about certain things what do you think has been a factor into that just maybe
13:31the players not focusing in enough yeah you know when you hit it on the head
13:36that's what it is it's about maintaining focus the average the average time of a
13:41play is five seconds right and so I tell the guys all the time all I need is five
13:46seconds of concentration and extreme focus 60 to 70 times a game and we'll be
13:50okay but it was our first road game and you know I would say there were
13:55definitely some hiccups and we just can't afford to do that here going
13:59forward but you're right it's about focus so Gerard what's your day like
14:03today when you look at watching film from last night making sure that Jacoby
14:07Brissett is taken care of figuring out his injury and then picking a starting
14:10quarterback by tonight you know yeah we'll have an injury meeting here in a
14:15few hours you know see how we came out of the game I would say we'll have
14:19conversations about every position we'll have conversations about you know
14:23the the away game operation we'll have conversations about all that and it's a
14:28very difficult time I would say here over the next couple of days because you
14:32know we have to we have to release players and you know I know the practice
14:36squad is a little bit bigger now but the team will not look the same that it did
14:40last night and that's a that's the tough part of the business but I think the
14:43guys recognize that but that's what we're going to be doing here over the
14:46next couple of days and then I'm going to call in on Wednesday and I'm going to
14:50tell you guys who the starting quarterback is okay I would just love to
15:09I mean Wiggy has issues with you but you guys can settle that I mean we'll be
15:13able to sit down and chop it up I'm always I'm not running away from any
15:19type of conversation or anything I'm always available you know for you guys
15:24to talk to and one thing I would say is it's about clarification and you guys
15:29said multiple times you know this morning that you're a little confused
15:33here a little confused there which is fine and I would say I try to give you I
15:36try to be as transparent as possible with the fans and with the media to a
15:41certain extent and like I said last night while still maintaining the the
15:46ability to change my mind and ultimately the decisions and football run through
15:50me and you know I have to do a better job as well so you know I'm still
15:55learning as well I would just love to sit in on one of the Monday morning
15:59meetings afterwards where he watches Phil where you guys watch film because
16:04you know how those were obviously with Bill I I would hope they're not as
16:09embarrassing to the players I would just love to sit in that's it yeah just
16:16come in after a win well any update before you go on Cole strange we were
16:24talking about him earlier no no update no update right now he's in here we
16:30haven't every day and I will see where it goes all right all right I would feel
16:35a little better now I'm not as confused no more as I was but usually I think
16:40like a four-year-old I will say this he used to get very anxious about texting
16:51bill he does yes he does not feel the same way about you Gerard so that's a
16:55good thing all right that is Gerard Mayo on a Patriots Monday brought to you by
17:05Cross Insurance Cross Insurance official insurance broker of the New England
17:10Patriots doesn't it make you seem like based on hearing that make me feel like
17:16yeah make you feel like I'm sorry that he was willing to say Drake may has
17:22outplayed Jacoby Brissett yeah he has sold yes that would make me lean towards
17:29May starting week one I think nugget wise he went back to the O-line and the
17:35concern about Drake may getting hurt did he not a little bit like you can't take
17:41out insurance player you know like and then he said but he said but then he
17:45said you make a great point when it comes to the O-line but then he goes but
17:51you can't take out insurance and he goes if Drake may shows that he's the better
17:56quarterback week one regardless what the O-line looks like he's gonna stop he
18:01also it seems like he felt like they did do what they needed to do when it cut
18:08when it comes to the offensive line like he pushed back on that they said that we
18:12went after the best free agents that we thought were out there but that they'll
18:16also be looking at the waiver wire come up here for any guys immediately yes
18:22he is eager to see what the cuts look like yeah I like the Jalen Polk thing
18:28though yeah that was kind of something we talked a little bit about maybe the
18:32receiving core has given them a little sense of reassurance that maybe it might
18:38be more about getting even trading for potentially an offensive lineman out
18:45there that could help them at left tackle he's a couple text messages he
18:48really is a great interview
