00:00You
00:20Alone is back and this season. There's a big twist
00:26Instead
00:29Of individuals seven pairs will be dropped into the grueling wilderness of northern Vancouver Island with one goal
00:37Survive as long as possible
00:42However, they will not be starting together the teams made up of two family members will be dropped over ten miles apart
00:50Once on the ground one person must set up camp while the other must find their partner using only a compass
00:59They will travel for days through a rugged landscape that receives a choking twelve and a half feet of precipitation a year
01:06And is home to one of the largest populations of black bear in the world
01:11To
01:14Survive here the 14 who make the cut must prove that they have the skills and knowledge to live in this landscape for months
01:24Over
01:257,500 applied the top 22 are put through a rigorous boot camp to test their abilities in shelter building
01:32Got a debris hub building up over here, and we've just been collecting ribs and work on that
01:38Fire making
01:42Food procurement and preservation
01:45Cracking the joints and then cutting tendons. So we're gonna get this fire raging let it cook down a bit and then put the rabbits on
01:54There's a bit of a trade-off. I think we picked however this season the participants will have someone to share in their misery
02:01Each will be heading into the wilderness with a family member
02:05It's actually okay in order to win the half million dollar prize not only must each team survive the island
02:11They must also survive each other
02:14Meet the first team that's about to begin alone's biggest challenge yet
02:25For me as a father this is gonna be an absolute great adventure for a dad and his son to do
02:32Hopefully feels the same his dad's and sons don't always jive, but I think we've got it figured out pretty good
02:38We're both really excited
02:41Me and my dad have what it takes to do this because he's been in military
02:45He's a super tough go-get-em guy and just does it we've on my side. I'm a little more methodical
02:52I like to think about things a lot and think about the situation
02:57Together we don't want to give up. That's just like not an option really
03:02Fight-or-flight, it's fight. Yeah, locate close with the story the enemy at all costs. No doubt about it
03:11Always been a hunter outdoors person. We grew up out in the woods on a lake Logan's been around that his whole life
03:17I think we have what it takes to do this. Come on because we have the right mindset
03:22I think we have the right attitude
03:25Attitude is everything for me. This is a chance to see my son transition to what I consider a manhood thing
03:32And hopefully we get along good. Yeah, we go for me
03:36The most important thing is having this chance to go do this with my son as a dad
03:41But if I said I don't care about the money, I'd be a liar. Everybody does
03:47I'd be able to finish my house
03:51The money could help with a lot of things like definitely like education is what I'm looking for after this
03:55So that's would be the big factor
03:58The
04:01Predator situation is a real thing on Vancouver big bears
04:05Cougars cougars cougars. I think that weighs on everybody more than the bears. Maybe I'm wrong. It does for me. I'm used to bears. I
04:14Don't see myself being really afraid of a lot of things wildlife. I don't worry about it
04:20I feel like if you're just positive and giving back to nature not like abusing anything that it will take care of
04:26No
04:28These are good
04:30My dad asked me who should be the hiker and I thought he should because he has a lot more experience with navigation
04:36Just in general, how do you live in Maine not like lobster?
04:40But I gave him the option because I trust him and I think that's the number one thing you need in the team is trust
04:47He's a very strong-willed young man right there trust me I know
04:56We found the absolute perfect though while each team selected has the skills needed to survive a
05:03Highly trained group of wilderness experts pay close attention to the particular strengths and weaknesses of each pair
05:13Alex is a great personality
05:15He's obviously very headstrong again with a strong military background and he's a really keen outdoorsman
05:22He can sometimes shoot first ask questions later, so he approached us sort of charges head-on
05:29Fails and then sort of reassesses and does it again? And I think that's a strength and a weakness out here
05:36Logan focuses more on the bushcraft. He likes to make things
05:41Alex's passion for the outdoors and his experience Logan will feed off that and he'll learn from him
05:52As the seven teams leave their homes and travel to Vancouver Island
05:56The production staff is busy assessing camp locations. They must all have equal resources
06:07All the sites that we're looking at picking or your or your fish and all everything that's coming out of the ocean that they can
06:14Collect is the same across the board
06:17However, even with the right resources
06:20Attempting to survive in this unforgiving wilderness is going to be excessively difficult
06:26even for the most prepared team
06:36Man it's like a bumper harvest of these look at those two. These are like pine cones. My name is Brooke
06:42My name is Dave and we both lived an extremely rustic lifestyle together
06:48We've been married 18 years. We got two kids and we live in two places right now
06:53We're in Michigan and during the summer you can find us in Alaska
06:58Going out on this challenge is right up our alley. We both just love an adventure
07:04We've always thought about just dropping really really deep off-grid really just ditch society for a while
07:12Brooke and I both lived way outside the box. I think we're suited perfectly for this
07:17We've lived in 12 by 12 cabin for two and a half years in big predator country in northern, Alaska
07:23We spent eight months together in the Aleutian Islands one year as caretakers completely alone. We lived ten years without running water
07:30We've roughed it
07:31We just feel like we have all the skills
07:33Hunting and fishing and trapping and you've done it the hard way most of our life. So this isn't that much of a stretch
07:43What
07:46We're gonna miss is Bell and Nick our two kids they're everything to us. We're so close. There's so much fun
07:53They're just good kids are good people. You were scream. They said don't come home. Yeah, so you win
07:59I think they like the idea, you know
08:01a ton of money at once too and
08:03The tires mostly flat when we made the final decision about who was gonna hike and who was gonna set up camp
08:09Brooke was going to do the hike, but this isn't a hike. It's a slog. It's
08:16Bushwhacking there's no trail. I think the biggest thing was there's gonna be overnights in places where you're technically lost in
08:23Large predator country and it was just more than she wanted to deal with I think for safety concerns
08:28I'm gonna do this hike the right way. I
08:32I
08:34Always wonder what it's like for people three four or five hundred years ago living hand-to-mouth
08:40How many people get a chance to really find out what that's like?
08:44Really is an amazing opportunity. See you in two years
08:49Wish us luck
08:51I
08:57Dave's really impressed us over the last few days. He's pretty
09:01Headstrong and determined and I think this comes from having a life living off-grid
09:07Brooke is more of a bushcrafter for me. So she's more into the crafty side of things
09:12So she's a keen hunter and trapper her size is gonna be her only drawback because she doesn't have much bulk to her
09:19So she's starting at a slight disadvantage to some of the bigger guys out there
09:24Brooke and Dave they've both got different skill sets that actually complement each other. So they make quite a strong team
09:37After months of wandering waiting and proving they have the skills necessary
09:41All teams are finally arriving on Vancouver Island for orientation
09:46Here they will spend two full weeks learning about the land they'll be attempting to survive on
09:54Including the predators that inhabit their new home
09:58Canadian bear
10:11Once the teams arrive at orientation
10:13They are put through a two-week seminar that will teach them nearly everything they need to know about the area
10:18They'll be attempting to survive the gear is to keep you guys
10:22Protected the class begins with a reality check on the large predators that they will almost certainly encounter
10:31Vancouver Island has the highest percentage. So
10:33Of all the cougar attacks that that occur in North America
10:37Probably close to 90% of them are in BC and probably 90% of those are in on bank Brown
10:46With a cougar, I mean if a cougar grabs you to you got a fight if you have a knife on you a knife is
10:51Great going for the eyes, you know, you got it. You got to make that cat know that you're not an easy thing to eat
10:59You're looking at the spraying this when the bear just before the bear reaches a six meter point
11:12It says travel and groups here
11:15Which we will not be doing holy cow. So I'm bringing ninja stars me too
11:21I
11:29Am Jim Baird, this is my brother Ted and we are brothers
11:38Why would we do this I I think we're doing this because it's freaking awesome
11:43you know, we want to do this when we were tiny kids, it was like a fascination we had and
11:48Even though it's scary
11:49We want to test our ability to do and see if we can do it because I mean that's the ultimate test
11:56Call yourself an outdoors man or whatever and it's like well, yeah, are you?
12:04Our expertise it's pretty well-rounded we're pretty seasoned outdoors men and
12:11Expeditioners if you want to call that we do pretty intense whitewater canoe expeditious
12:18We put ourselves in very remote extremely challenging rugged places
12:23Thousands of miles from the road because of that we've learned how to navigate really well
12:28It's probably good. I think that we have what it takes because we have a legitimate experience out here
12:35I mean we've been in the middle of remote northern Labrador with an intense whitewater River in front of us and
12:43Had to catch and forage and hunt for food before I mean we've been in that situation
12:48Where we're hungry and we also have to move a distance and we don't have dinner and we got to come up with it
12:52We're eating tonight
12:56The animal has to stick its head through the loop to get out the bait
13:01$500,000 would be life-changing for me feel like yeah
13:06$500,000, baby
13:08My biggest fear I'd say is just the boogeyman
13:12My biggest fear is probably the dark
13:16voles
13:19Now my biggest fear probably just
13:22Starving and and just slowly dwindling down and then getting into a mental state
13:28That is dangerous in the sense that I don't have the calories. I need to make rational decisions
13:34We decided that I'm doing the hike he has more recent experience more recent experience doing that kind of thing I
13:42Would rather do the hike because I'd rather worry about myself and getting there
13:46But it'd be totally out of my hands and being like where the hell's my brother
13:50Are we gonna lose is he okay? Is he gonna find me these sort of things? I
13:55Just want to get out there. Yeah, exactly
13:58Mancubus
14:01Let's do this
14:05Jim and Ted they've done some pretty extreme expeditions together. I've been through some really harsh harsh times
14:12The challenge is for them. They bicker quite a lot because they're brothers and they're quite tight and they've done these expeditions
14:19They just sort of punch it out and then it's done for me Jim and Ted are a great team
14:23They're a great team. They're a great team. They're a great team. They're a great team
14:26They just sort of punch it out and then it's done for me
14:29Jim and Ted are a great team and they've got a really good dynamic and they'll help each other with their humor
14:35I think it'll be key to surviving out here one of the
14:39Drawbacks of being quite big fellas is they're gonna have to get a lot of food each day just to sustain themselves
14:44So that's going to be the biggest challenge out here
14:47So it's a plus that they're both quite skilled. What comes with that is because they're big they have to get a lot of food
14:56In addition to scrambling through the dense forest with only a compass bearing
15:02And keeping an eye out for predators while trying to find their family member. Yeah
15:07Yeah, the participants must also document their experience
15:11You gotta throw a curveball at these guys every now and then so what I did is I went around
15:16And sabotaged all their cameras. So all their audio settings have changed all their video settings are changed. Everything's changed
15:22So now they're trying to figure out what is going on. I don't see no audio on your channel, too. The games have begun
15:29Turn on camera. Is it recording right now?
15:32Okay, that's that's what I did. I hit hit the wrong button looking for
15:37Looking at the stupid viewfinders what i'm doing. Okay. Now i'm looking right into the camera. All right now you're recording. Yeah
15:45Not record
15:47I think i'm starting to become a little more comfortable with the camera equipment
15:55This season the dangers of a 10 mile track through bear infested rainforest
16:01The possibilities of breaking an arm or a leg into thick undergrowth
16:05And the threat of extreme dehydration and exposure all require enhanced safety measures
16:11And the threat of extreme dehydration and exposure all require enhanced safety measures
16:20One of those measures is the addition of several safety teams scattered through the wilderness
16:26So yeah, we have this gps tracking device and it gives us a reading of where our participant is in the terrain
16:32And how quickly he's moving
16:36These teams will live in the forest hidden out of sight
16:39And track the participants by gps
16:43They are the medical teams that will provide emergency care for participants as helicopters and boats are scrambled for extraction
16:58Additionally because the seven teams will be struggling to survive in such a remote area
17:04A forward base camp must also be created to coordinate the movements of the smaller safety teams in the field
17:11A converted fishing boat will be the hub of all safety operations
17:16From here extractions of participants can be performed no matter what the weather
17:22With this floating base camp the crew can effectively work through anything mother nature has to throw at them
17:33So
17:40Just trying to cut out a life along the shores of northern vancouver island is a brutal and unforgiving experience
17:47Add in a 10 mile hike using only a compass and a bearing carrying a 60 pound pack through dense forest
17:55And you are going to have an extremely difficult couple of weeks
17:59And that is just the beginning
18:02So trying to balance on top of rocks and things like that with your pack on everyone who makes the cut arrives at orientation
18:08Thinking they know what to expect from the wilderness here. The truth is until they are out there. They have no idea
18:16The worst thing here is going to be your feet are going to be soaked all the time. The skin's going to be soft
18:21It's going to get beat up
18:22That's the reason the two weeks before launch encompasses everything the participants need to know to give them a fighting chance
18:29to be the last team standing
18:32Can I see that?
18:40My name's brad i'm josh and we're blacksmiths here in northern illinois
18:45All right. This is just kind of an example of some of the knives we make this is actually one of the same models
18:51We consider ourselves equipped to survive in the wilderness because of the sheer amount of practice that we've put into these skills
18:58Ever since we were young our dad's been taking us out on canoeing trips
19:03fishing trips
19:05I feel confident going into this because of the training that we've had in the past
19:10All the arguments and challenges we've faced together in the past are all preparing us for this
19:15It'll take a spark from a ferro rod or an ember really really nicely
19:20But it only burns for a few seconds primitive skills are the base of our skill set. I think that's uh
19:27That's what's necessary to survive out there. This must have been hit by a snow machine
19:32In the last five hours tops. I'm gonna take this back to camp and uh, this will be dinner for us
19:40The main reason for doing this is to test my brother and I together
19:43We're gonna strengthen our bond together a lot being out here going through times as tough as this
19:48And not only just to test our skills, but also to learn new skills
19:52We'll just meet up
19:53We'll have a meal
19:55As far as the money though
19:56I mean this is a chance for us to get out of the prairie state and move closer to the mountains
20:00Expand our blacksmith shop and really work on our business. The prize money is definitely huge and it's a huge factor to us
20:09I think being competitive with my brother is going to really help us out there
20:13I know I am not going to be the one that wants to tap the button
20:16It's very tough and I know my brother's not going to be the one that wants to tap the button
20:20Definitely not bad. It's really not bad at all. And so we're both gonna really push ourselves for each other
20:29We are the youngest team here and you know being young we might have more energy
20:34I think we can win this
20:36There is a great set of teams going out into this and it's going to be very unpredictable
20:42But we we feel very confident going into this and we're in it for the long run
20:47All right
20:49This is what's keeping us warm. My biggest challenge is working well with my brother
20:53We do disagree on a lot of things finding ways around around those disagreements is going to be huge for us
21:00I'm the boss. I'm the boss
21:02I'm, i'm definitely the boss in this situation
21:05So he's he's older yet. So I guess he gets to be the to listen to what I say
21:12Love you
21:14Brad and josh's skills have obviously been honed at home
21:18But maybe lack some of the practical experience using them in the bush
21:21Being the youngest participants they may struggle with the mental side of this challenge. I think their skills
21:29Sort of mirror each other quite well as long as they can stay headstrong and deal with the mental side of this challenge
21:34I think they could do well
21:36This is just an incredible survival tool on this season of alone
21:41Participants may still bring 10 items, but they must be split between the two partners
21:48reliable
21:49A must five for one team member and five for the other. It's a lot more packable than say a cross-cut saw
21:57With a limited amount of tools weeks of thought have gone into everyone's choices
22:03What may seem like odd choices to some are considered secret weapons by others
22:09So my second item and the item i'm going to be bringing on the hike is going to be my bow
22:12Not only is it helpful for protecting against wild animals
22:16But also if we find the right hunting spot
22:18We'll be able to take down a bear or deer or some other large animal
22:21And we've actually modified the arrow a little bit to we painted it
22:24So it's easier to find some of these thick woods
22:27I'm going to show you the breakdown of the items that we are bringing in all our preparations for this
22:32We have focused on the mental side of things what's going to keep us pointed in the right direction
22:37I think it's all a mental game
22:39So here's our bar soap before you go on thinking. Oh, it's the girl's choice to bring
22:44So I gotta tell you this was a
22:47Both of our decisions to bring so absolutely
22:50We spent a lot of time dirty wet cold covered in fish guts when you take
22:56Yourself and get yourself cleaned up
22:58After let's say a week. It's like going back to day one
23:05Well, that's it
23:07Hope we picked the right items
23:09I hope so
23:19As the day of the launch gets closer the participants learn how to use their yellow brick beacons
23:24I think the iridium system has 66 satellites that circle the earth from top to bottom north and south
23:31Part gps tracking device and part tap out button. Every team member will carry their own
23:38But it only takes one of them to push the button ending both of their chances at winning the half million dollars
23:45Does it have a battery indicator also?
23:47Yeah, so
23:52Hold up a sec. I'm pete and this is my son sam
23:56Sam and I both have a lot of experience in the outdoors. Yeah
24:00I've been a hunter and fisherman all my life learned most of my basic skills from my father
24:06But I picked up a few on my own I started trapping I was a falconer for several years also learned about
24:14survival on my own
24:16I really got into running around in the woods because that's what i've grown up with
24:20You know since I was little my dad's brought me outside and it's what i'm used to it's what I enjoy
24:25it's what I went to school for I got my degree in fisheries management and watershed hydrology and
24:31You know, it's it's kind of what I pursue
24:32I mean, it's a perfect blend when you get to take what you're interested in and combine it with
24:37You know a job
24:39Then you can actually delve even deeper into it on the way back from one of our adventures today
24:43We found a little surprise along the interstate
24:47raccoon
24:48We're going to go ahead and skin this out and it's actually a perfect opportunity
24:53For sam to demonstrate some of his skills with with primitive stone tools
25:00We're doing this for the challenge
25:02We both love the outdoors. We love adventure and I can't think of a more exciting challenge not bad so far
25:13Sam and I both have
25:15Adventure in our blood. We love hiking
25:18I've taught individuals about survival
25:22I've taught myself about survival
25:25Here we go. Oh boy. There it is regular smorgasbord. Let me see that little guy right there
25:31I'm doing it also for my son. I think this is
25:34an incredible
25:36Opportunity for the two of us to really bond
25:40How do you think mom and laura are going to do without us? I'm doing it for the thrill of it
25:43I think it'll be a big challenge
25:45I know there are probably a lot of people that say they're a lot better at the whole bushcraft aspect of this than me
25:49But I kind of like going at it with a different thought process
25:53Really my main goal whenever I get to one into a forest is I like to understand the forest
25:57I like to understand the plants and the relationships between the plants and
26:01All the animals and once you can kind of tap into that
26:04I just want to really test all of my background knowledge. I think I think everything combined could turn out really well
26:12Ow, ow, ow
26:14That was hot. Look you're burning the hair on my arm
26:17Yeah
26:18Sam has a very strong personality like I do and there's going to be conflict. We're going to be butting heads
26:26All right, I know there's a
26:28Big fish just waiting out there
26:29One thing that drives me absolutely crazy about my dad is that he snores every night and I cannot stand it
26:37I know
26:38That especially once I don't have a wonderful full belly and i'm not totally well rested. I know that is going to start driving me crazy
26:46We're going to be arguing about this and that it'll be a test, but he's my son. We'll get through it
26:52As
26:54Far as being dropped off separately, you know, obviously that's a big change
26:58But the real reason we're doing this is for the adventure and the thrill
27:02We've decided that sam will be the hiker. He's 26 years old. I'm 61
27:08We both have the knowledge and the ability to make the hike
27:12But he's got a lot more strength at 61 you start falling off a little bit even though you stay active
27:18You still start falling off a little bit
27:23I've never had anything any one thing test my skills the way this challenge will I have no doubt about it
27:31I think it's going to be brutal but in the end
27:34Very rewarding what's really important for me is to be able to spend this time with my son
27:40Working together as a as a real team to make it through this adventure this challenge. Are we ready for this?
27:48Let's go
27:51Love you, too. Bye. Bye
27:56Sam's impressed us. He's really impressed us with his knowledge of fauna
27:59He's got one of the largest knowledge base that i've seen of north american plants
28:06Sam and pete have obviously got different strengths in different areas. So
28:10Pete's more of a hunter sounds more of a fisherman
28:13And that's going to be great when they're challenged out here
28:20With two mouths to feed instead of one every opportunity to procure food will be paramount
28:27If the participants aren't having luck in the ocean then they must turn their attention to wild edibles like mushrooms
28:34So so these this is it at its older stage
28:37Patches the inky cap you saw we've seen many of them along the trail. So they're edible
28:42Knowing what to eat and what can kill you or your family member means taking in every bit of information
28:49The experts offer you there's a beautiful one on the ground here on vancouver island
28:54There are thousands of species of mushrooms and some of them are super delicious and others are deadly poisonous
29:01These guys aren't going to last too long though. You need to eat them right away
29:06However eating a mushroom when the expert is there opposed to eating one when they're not can be a huge gamble
29:13So this is not at all a chanterelle
29:16Um, I don't know the edibility of this mushroom
29:20So don't eat that one. So don't eat it. Yeah, i'm looking at the circling buzzard
29:31Good shot. That's one dead bear. I'm, jesse bozdell. I'm from scowhegan, maine
29:35I'm, shannon bozdell and i'm from wrangle, alaska. We're brothers. We was raised in a very large family
29:40There's 10 of us. We had some really lean times
29:42We was raised hand to mouth and most of the food that we got was
29:47Out here in the woods. So we was kind of raising this lifestyle
29:51We all responsible each other since we were kids to make sure we were fed make sure we had the water the food the shelter
29:56Already just a continuation of what we'd already do. We're accustomed to having to be in each other's care
30:02I signed us up because I think we're uniquely suited for this type of adventure because of both of our lifestyles
30:09You know his military background and i'm a subsistence hunter and commercial fisherman. There you go
30:16That's a nice one. I see that was worth your calories expended. Absolutely
30:19Let's just keep moving. We're a pretty tough crew. We hunt for a living. We fish for a living
30:23We do all that
30:24And what advantage we do have is we're willing to get out of the nasty and the rain
30:28It will keep moving no matter how nasty it is out there. We'll keep working for survival and to thrive
30:34We're stubborn hard-headed and we just keep moving. We're too damn stupid to quit. That's it
30:38That's a perfect way of putting it
30:42Wrangle alaska about 400 miles north of vancouver island
30:46this is a lot like the environment we'll be going out to a lot of the
30:51Rainforests the thick brush a lot of the creatures the cougars the bears the wolves that we would have to deal with out there
30:57We're kind of used to this. It's nothing's going to push us out of there unless we get hurt
31:00I think that's our biggest concern is really getting hurt where we can't come back from
31:05Um
31:06When we found out that we're gonna go out there and actually be separate in the beginning
31:09It was at first nerve-wracking then exciting. I think it's gonna be a really cool experience
31:14My navigation skills are very good. It was part of the reasons why I wanted to do the hiker
31:19I initially just said look I need to do this
31:21He has a tendency somehow hurting himself
31:23He'll like twist his knee or chop his thumb off or whatever it is
31:27And you know I have to deal with that for a week or two
31:29I'm gonna have to go out there and make sure he stays safe
31:31I've had more years in these woods than you have by far
31:33Yeah, but i'm a little bit more physically fit to be able to do it. I don't know there bubba
31:38So jesse's ex-special forces. He's approached all of the challenges. We've set him head-on
31:44He lacks in some of the survival skills as opposed to his brother
31:47I think there'll be a huge advantage for jesse coming from the military
31:52Shannon's another one who's really impressed us
31:54He is a hunch and trapper from alaska and he uses his skills to actually provide meat for his family
32:00I think his his age might come into it a bit and he might be challenged by that
32:05Shannon's hunting and trapping experience and then jesse's sort of army mentality and navigation skills. They're really going to complement each other
32:22The launch is mere hours away
32:24As the production crew meticulously searches the participants packs before locking them in a secure area
32:31They're coming in right now and they're basically going through all of our equipment making sure that we're not sneaking anything in making sure
32:37Everything meets the standards. So it's kind of hectic out here right now. Everyone's just laying stuff out. Okay, so that's his
32:45Jacket, it is extremely important that no one is taking anything other than their 10 chosen items clothing allowances and safety gear
32:54It's 100 synthetic. It would have been
32:57Items that don't fall in line with the rules will be removed
33:00And if it appears someone is trying to purposely sneak something into the field it may result in immediate disqualification
33:08Hopefully everyone got a pack that is sized
33:15My name's chris and i'm going on this adventure to vancouver island with my brother brody. Here's some beautiful black-eyed susans
33:22My wife's name is heather. She and I are thick as thieves. We work together. We live together. We eat lunch together every day
33:32My two daughters isabel who's age 9 and presley who's age 14 are really the center of our lives
33:39It's so cool
33:41Uncle brody and I put that together brody and I are really well suited for this adventure
33:46We come from a really strong tradition of outdoorsmanship
33:50Grew up on a dairy farm where you had to work no matter what the weather was like to do whatever had to be done
33:55on the farm
33:57The ability to endure physical hardships is something that we grew up with
34:05Our name is brody and we are at our family farm my wife and I have been married for two years
34:12And we're new to parenting as well. We have a 10 month old daughter
34:19Here we go, here we go, leave it on leave it on no that didn't last long this time away
34:25It's gonna weigh in on me the most for my child is physically changing and mentally changing on a weekly basis
34:31And i'm gonna miss months of that
34:37Hey man, how's it going
34:39Wasn't too bad of a trip, huh?
34:42Well, it's good to see you good to see you getting a chance to go to vancouver island
34:47I think we were just bred for it. I mean we come from a background of people who have a strong interest in self-reliance
34:54We've been practicing bushcraft skills survival skills for many years now been a lifelong outdoorsman
34:59There's a real opportunity here to test our skills
35:02We've actually started taking trips where we would procure our food and being very limited on what we would take on these trips to
35:09Separate ourselves from modern tools
35:12One of the reasons why we'd be crazy enough to do this is that on a smaller scale
35:16This is what we do we survive the best we can what makes this different is you don't go home till you quit
35:22Or until everyone else quits that's going to be the most difficult on us
35:25The shame one of our five items couldn't have been a chicken, right?
35:30We're going to try to
35:32Eliminate making mistakes. It's it's going to happen, but we want to learn from our mistakes
35:38And hopefully make as few as possible
35:42It was a quick decision for me I felt the urge to volunteer
35:45Yeah, brody felt really confident that he had the skill set for the hike
35:49And I graciously accepted his offer because he's 11 years younger
35:54We want to go in it saying that we are creating a living environment, you know place that you can sustain life for years
36:03Oh
36:05In a way it's like being a little kid again we get to go on this extreme camping trip
36:09And uh spend time together. We really haven't had a chance to do this
36:12Off we go. Yeah right off into the sunset
36:20Chris showed some really good shelter building techniques
36:23So they were one of the only participants during the assessments to use natural materials
36:28But everything brody size is going to be a bit of a disadvantage he's quite lean and muscular
36:34Um, so he's going to need to keep a lot of protein and a lot of carbs
36:38Which is going to be a real challenge out here
36:40I'm, not sure how much time they spent together out in the bush and that can be a struggle
36:45Living in such close quarters with someone although they're brothers
36:48so it's not the sort of area where you want to find out if it's going to work or
36:53or fail
36:55You got this. I got this
36:58Heather tell my hair to not while the participants prepare to live for months in the backcountry
37:08The production crew is performing a final dry run to get the teams to their isolated locations safely and quick
37:20All of the camera cases are placed last minute beauty shots are captured by the camera team
37:27And the safety crew monitors the ever-changing vancouver weather
37:35In just a few hours at sunrise is what everyone has been preparing for 12 hours from now is launch day
37:58The day these participants have been working towards for the past year has finally arrived
38:08Here we go
38:12I'm expecting the unexpected taking a look at what the land is like below us
38:17What I might have to encounter what I might see what I might not see
38:24This is awesome
38:27It's gonna be eating at me is my son fine if you're a dad, I think that's a gimme you're gonna worry about it
38:33I think he'll be fine. He's probably gonna want me to get there quick
38:39Today will be a first for these participants as they're dropped off in this fiercely difficult land to experience a kind of freedom
38:47That few people will ever know
38:49Oh, it's just so exciting
38:53Everybody has fear fear is a survival instinct
38:57So you gotta use it the right way
39:02I'm about ready to load onto this thing head out brooks out there somewhere
39:08It's kind of one of those things where it's better not to to frame up in your mind
39:13What you think you're gonna see it's never exactly what's in your head
39:17This is awesome. Don't get yourself killed
39:21No matter how long it lasts this journey will be one that shapes them for the rest of their lives
39:28i'm
39:29Very excited
39:30I'm heading home into the bush
39:32awesome
39:34They are now members of a very small group who will know what it's like to survive alone and unaided
39:42This is so exciting. I can't believe this day is finally here
39:46To be separated from their loved ones knowing that they are out there somewhere
39:51I don't know. It's just incredible. I hope my dad's doing. All right. I hope he's got all set up
39:57Yeah
39:59And if they do find each other will they have what it takes to stick together and outlast all other teams
40:05It's gonna be pretty awesome. I'm looking forward to it
40:10None of them truly know how they will perform or if they'll make it long enough to reunite with their family member
40:16This has got to be the craziest best thing i've ever done
40:19Because I get to do it with my son. This is awesome
40:22if they do
40:24Will they be stronger together or will this experience drive them apart?
40:32No one knows all we can do is watch along as they find out for themselves
40:41Good luck to them all
40:50The game is going to completely change
40:53There's this giant pain in the neck just to find your partner he'll be here soon, I hope what did I sign up for
41:02Probably the roughest forester is in the world. Nobody deserves this. This ain't survival. This is hike and inhale
41:10Sure
41:25You know, we have to be able to work together and compromise you can put it there
41:29Fuck man, just fucking just let me fucking do this. We're gonna have to overcome obstacles
41:35Wait, wait
41:37Oh my yeah
41:40And it's just murder
41:46Your starvation vacation awaits you I can't really move
41:57I am just skin and bones. I would never ever push the button without us being on the same page
42:03It's down here in the noises
42:05I'm trying to lift it up
42:07To hold a wolf on the beach coming towards me
