Car Enthusiast Spends $100,000 Building Custom Desert Rally Vehicle

  • last month
Russell White has spent over $100,000 to create a custom car that can easily leap over sand dunes in the desert. The car, called a Rally Fighter, can also reach speeds up to 135 miles per hour. A Rally Fighter is a car that is manufactured by Local Motors but customized and built by the customer. Russell, from Texas, USA, built his street-legal car himself in the factory where they are made in Chandler, Arizona.

00:00The car was built to drive very fast, that's where it's happy, that's where it wants to
00:11be.
00:12You just have to be willing to be there with it.
00:15When it comes to the ultimate off roading vehicle, Russell Wyatt's Rallyfighter steals
00:20the show.
00:21It can be very dangerous at times, for me that's the exciting part.
00:30Russell, from Texas, USA, spent over $100,000 to create the Rallyfighter.
00:36Most of the parts are collected together and prepared by Local Motors in Chandler, Arizona.
00:41I went to the factory, I used their tools, got in there with my hands, started with a
00:48bare frame and built the car to completion and driving it home 30 days later.
00:55The engine's from the Chevy Corvette and the Camaro SS.
01:00It's direct from GM Performance Parts.
01:02It's known as the E-Rod, which is an LS3, 430 horsepower, I believe 420 foot-pounds
01:09of torque and passes all 50 state emissions.
01:12It comes with everything you need to install, run and get it on the road.
01:18The steering wheel is actually a Momo Race Spec, I believe.
01:22The column, I believe, is out of a F-150.
01:26The custom car can reach speeds of up to 135 miles per hour and can drive over virtually
01:32any terrain that comes in its path.
01:35A lot of times I like going down the roads where I do not know what's around the corner
01:39or on the other side of that hill, just heightens the sensation in the not knowing, so it's
01:45very fun.
01:46It has the GM crate motor, I got about 20 inches of travel and suspension, allows for
01:54driving really fast out in the desert and taking some of the bigger jumps and loops
01:59and anything you've majorly come across.
02:01As well as tackling the toughest of driving conditions, the unusual looking car is completely
02:07street legal.
02:08I thought it was something from the future, something pretty wild.
02:12I want one, three words, right?
02:14No, unique car, great looking car.
02:17I'm surprised about the engine, it's kind of in the dashboard, it's amazing, it's such
02:21a small engine for such a strange looking car.
02:26While he can drive his attention grabbing creation round the city, there's only one
02:30place Russell really enjoys driving his car.
02:36Because it's a very capable car and you can only go as fast as the person in front of
02:41you, most of the time it's 35 miles an hour, that's why I like coming out here in the desert
02:46and if I see a dirt road alongside the road, you're going to see my car on that dirt road
02:52than you are on the street.
