Anthony Albanese has announced $400M for his 'Pacific Policing Initiative', which the Australian prime minister says will strengthen collective peace and security. The initiative is widely seen by analysts as a rebuke to China's efforts to grow its own policing and security footprint in the region.

00:00And this is a Pacific-led initiative, very important.
00:04This is something that has arisen from the Pacific family to look after the Pacific family ourselves.
00:12Our Pacific neighbours stand with each other and we help each other in times of need.
00:18There are three pillars to this initiative.
00:20The first is regional police training centres of excellence,
00:24where there will be up to four,
00:26to be located in Pacific countries to undertake specialist police training and support.
00:33Secondly, the police support group,
00:35a trained pool of officers from multiple Pacific countries,
00:39ready to deploy in response to requests for assistance to major events
00:45or to provide support in times of crisis.
00:48And thirdly, the Pacific Policing Initiative,
00:52a policing development and coordination hub.
