Crypto investment scam targeting Japanese citizens busted, 21 held

Police have dismantled a cryptocurrency investment fraud call centre, believed to be targeting Japanese citizens, following separate raids on two luxury residential properties in the capital on Aug 19.  A local man and 16 men from China were among 21 individuals arrested. 00:05In accordance with the information provided by the Calling Center for Cryptocurrency Investors,

00:12on 19 August 2024,

00:15two robberies were committed in two residential areas around Kuala Lumpur.

00:21The result of the robberies, 21 individuals,

00:24consisted of one local man,

00:2716 men and 1 woman from China,

00:311 man from Hong Kong,

00:341 woman from Laos,

00:36and 1 man from Myanmar,

00:39aged 22 to 37 years, were arrested.

01:0655 mobile phones of various names,

01:091 router,

01:111 set of house keys,

01:13and 2 mobile units were confiscated.

01:19According to the investigation, the Calling Center for Cryptocurrency Investors

01:23had just started operations less than a month ago.

01:27This syndicate used a luxury bungalow

01:30with two high-rise floors

01:33and located far from the main road

01:36as an operation center

01:38to hide their activities

01:41from the authorities.

03:04by the police

03:05on 25 August 2024

03:07after their sentence

03:09had expired.

03:10Meanwhile,

03:1120 other individuals

03:13were detained

03:15under the Immigration Act

03:17of 1959-1963.
