Bukit Aman managed to trace a ransom paid in cryptocurrency for a Malaysian man who was kidnapped in Manila, Philippines.

Bukit Aman CCID director Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf told a press conference on Monday (Dec 11) that the trace, which was made possible by the Commercial Crime Investigation Department's (CCID) own cryptocurrency lab, led to the identification of six foreign suspects involved in the kidnapping and subsequent murder of the victim.

01:46 The kidnapping and murder case involving a Malaysian citizen in Manila, Philippines.
01:53 On 24 October 2023, last month,
01:59 Atasye Police Department in Manila has received a complaint from a Malaysian citizen
02:09 that the man's brother who works in Manila was kidnapped on 22 October 2023 by an unknown group of men.
02:20 The kidnappers then demanded ransom money of Rp 330,000.
02:28 The money was then paid through the crypto wallet application, USDT.
02:36 However, on 23 October 2023, the Philippines National Police, PNP,
02:42 has received a report about the discovery of a body of a man in St. Simon, Pampanga,
02:50 where the physical description and tattoo on the body
02:56 is the same as the description of the kidnappers.
03:03 On 9 November 2023, the JSDK has received a request from Atasye Police Department in Manila
03:12 to assist in the analysis of the transaction flow into the crypto wallet of a suspect involved in the case.
03:21 This involves forensics.
03:23 The analysis has succeeded in detecting the cryptocurrency transaction flow
03:31 which was transferred to an exchange that was not registered in Malaysia.
03:36 The information received from the exchange reveals the identity of six foreign citizens
03:43 who were believed to have helped in the investigation of the kidnapping case.
03:50 All this information has been handed over to Atasye Police Department in Manila for further investigation.
