00:00In today's episode of Little List Project, I'm going to share seven
00:04evidence-based tips for better eye health. These tips will help you reduce
00:08the risk of age-related eye issues and also help prevent eye injuries.
00:17Hello, hello! Welcome back to my channel. I'm Ria. If you've watched any of my
00:21previous videos, you know how much I love to research and I'll provide you with
00:25references for all of my videos. The information in this video has come from
00:30over 25 quality references and if you want to read more, you can find them all
00:36in the description. Let's begin. The first step for better eye health is the most
00:41basic and that is to eat a diet that supports eye health. Your eyes need
00:46vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, vitamin A, omega-3, and a few other nutrients to
00:53function at their best. If you're eating a diet that is predominantly whole foods
00:58and you're not eating too many processed or refined foods and you're eating a
01:02balanced, you're probably covered. But if you are eating quite a few processed
01:07foods, you might not be getting enough nutrients. So what can you do to get more
01:12of these nutrients? Let's talk about vitamin C. To get more vitamin C in your
01:16diet, just eat more fruits and vegetables. Examples would be things like tomatoes,
01:21bell peppers, citrus fruits. To get more vitamin E in your diet, eat more nuts and
01:27seeds. Examples, sunflower seeds, almonds, peanuts. To get more zinc in your diet,
01:33you could eat more hemp seeds, cashews, legumes that are either soaked or
01:38fermented, and shellfish. To get more omega-3 fatty acids, you could eat fish,
01:43hemp seeds, or take an omega-3 supplement. And to get more vitamin A, you could eat
01:48leafy greens, bell pepper, carrots, eggs, and a bunch of other foods. So as you can
01:53see, if you eat a variety of different foods, you're probably covered. If you're
01:57interested in a longer list of foods with these nutrients, you can find links
02:01in the description. The second tip for better eye health is to follow the 20,
02:0520, 20 rule. You might be thinking, what is this rule? I did not know this rule
02:11until earlier this year. I use a lot of devices. I'm either on my iPad or on my
02:16desktop or on my phone. And over the past year, I've noticed that I am experiencing
02:23quite a bit of eye fatigue and eye strain. I talked to my ophthalmologist about this
02:28and she recommended the 20, 20, 20 rule. So what's the rule? Every 20 minutes, look
02:35at something that's 20 feet away for 20 seconds. That's how it's 20, 20, 20. And
02:41this really gives your eyes a break and helps them relax. I don't remember to do
02:46this every 20 minutes, but I try. I have noticed that since I've adopted this
02:50rule, my eyes don't feel as tired as they used to and they can focus better. And
02:56when you're getting older, focus definitely becomes a little bit of a
03:00struggle. So this has definitely helped me. So try this out. Tip number three is
03:04to wear quality sunglasses and not just on sunny days. So let's tackle the
03:09quality part first and then we'll talk about the sunny days part. So quality
03:14sunglasses should offer you both UVA and UVB protection, a hundred percent for
03:19both. And you can get quality sunglasses at reputable retailers. Sunglasses that
03:25are very cheap or sunglasses that are counterfeit, they may not offer proper UV
03:30protection even though the lens is dark. Just because the lens is dark does not
03:35mean it provides adequate UVA and UVB protection. So whenever you're buying
03:40sunglasses, make sure you read the labels. And if you're buying them online, make
03:44sure to read the product description. Now let's talk about the sunny days part.
03:48So wearing sunglasses on sunny days is something most of us will do because of
03:52the glare. But many of us will not wear sunglasses on cloudy days. But did you
03:57know that UV radiation can still damage your eyes on a cloudy day too? UV rays
04:03can still get through clouds and reach your eyes and cause damage long-term. So
04:08it's a good idea to wear sunglasses not just on the sunny days, but on the cloudy
04:13days too. Especially if you're spending a long amount of time outside. The fourth
04:19tip for better eye health is to reduce your blood sugar. And you might be
04:24wondering, what does my blood sugar have to do with my eyes? A lot. If you have
04:28diabetes, it puts you at risk of a disease called diabetic retinopathy. In
04:33the early stages, you may not notice any symptoms or changes to your eyesight. So
04:38you can't tell if your eyesight is being damaged. Did you know that diabetes is
04:42the leading cause of new cases of blindness in adults? So it's really
04:48important to know your blood sugar levels. So many people are pre-diabetic
04:52or diabetic, but they have no idea because they don't know their blood
04:56sugar numbers. My suggestion to you is to talk to your doctor and get your blood
05:00work done so you know what your blood sugar is. If your blood sugar is high,
05:05start to make changes to your diet and your lifestyle to reduce that number.
05:10Because that way you can reduce the risk of diabetic retinopathy. Tip number
05:15five is to get regular comprehensive eye exams. Not just exams to figure out what
05:20your prescription is, but to actually go in and properly check your eyes. So my
05:26prescription has not changed too much over the last 10 years. Very minor. So I
05:30don't go for my eye exams just for that. I go to check whether or not I have
05:35glaucoma because it is something that is a possibility. I have a lot of risk
05:40factors and glaucoma is one of the leading causes of blindness. If you don't
05:46get a comprehensive eye exam regularly, you would have no idea that you have
05:51glaucoma. The symptoms start so slowly that you may not even notice it. The only
05:56way to find out if you have glaucoma is to get a comprehensive dilated eye exam.
06:02Are those eye exams fun? Not at all. I do not like them, but I think it's really
06:07important if you have the risk factors. So what are some of the risk factors? Age
06:11over 55, black Asian or Hispanic heritage, that's one of my risk factors, family
06:18history of glaucoma, another risk factor for me, and certain medical conditions
06:23such as diabetes, high blood pressure, migraines, and sickle cell anemia. And
06:28there are a few other risk factors too. I'll put them in the description. So if
06:32you haven't had a comprehensive eye exam in a really long time, it's a good idea
06:36to get one. Tip number six is to wear protective eyewear. Did you know that 90%
06:42of serious eye injuries could be prevented by wearing the appropriate
06:47protective eyewear? So when I was researching for this video, I thought
06:51well protective eyewear, I don't do anything that's that dangerous. Do I
06:55really need to wear protective eyewear? And I came across an interesting
06:59statistic. 50% of eye injuries actually happen in the home. So yes, I do think I
07:05need to buy a pair of protective eyewear. So you might be thinking, what
07:09could possibly happen at home that might injure my eye? Let me give you a few
07:13examples. Cleaning. Chemicals I bleach in household cleaning products cause
07:19125,000 eye injuries a year. What can you do to prevent that? Wear protective
07:26eyewear. Another example, home improvement. Screws, nails, and hand tools can launch
07:32into the air and injure your eye. So always a good idea to wear protective
07:37eyewear if there's a possibility of something landing in your eye. Another
07:43example, yard work. Lawnmowers, trimmers, and even shovels can throw dirt and
07:49debris into the air and that can land into your eye. So it's really important
07:54to wear protective eyewear whenever you're in a situation that may cause
07:58risk to your eyes. Tip number seven is to quit smoking. So there are many many
08:04different reasons to quit smoking and let me add a few more to your list and
08:08that is to reduce the risk of eye issues in the future. Things like cataract and
08:14macular degeneration happen to occur in smokers a lot more frequently than they
08:19occur in non-smokers. So definitely consider quitting smoking for better eye
08:25health. Thank you for watching this video. If you learned something new, please do
08:29give it a thumbs up because that helps me reach more people. And also, if you
08:35think a friend of yours or a family member of yours will benefit from this
08:38information, you can share this video with them. Anyway, I will see you in the
08:43next video. Bye!
