00:01:04Tonight our location, the Big Apple, with the spotlight focused solely on the heavyweight
00:01:12division.
00:01:13Welcome to Brooklyn, New York, where it's been over 100 years since this borough has
00:01:17hosted a heavyweight championship fight.
00:01:19Well, tonight, all of that comes to an end, with not one, but two heavyweight world title
00:01:25fights here on Showtime Championship Boxing.
00:01:31Hello, everyone.
00:01:32I'm Brian Custer.
00:01:33Welcome to the 30th year of Showtime Championship Boxing.
00:01:36We're very excited about beginning our new year here at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn,
00:01:41which has quickly become a regular host for world title fights.
00:01:45The heavyweight division has become a lot more compelling over the past year.
00:01:48Huge fights, new champions.
00:01:50Deontay Wilder became the WBC heavyweight champion nearly a year ago from today.
00:01:55Tonight, he defends that crown for the third time.
00:01:58The man trying to dethrone him, Poland's Artur Spilka.
00:02:02Plus, we'll begin the night with the IBF heavyweight belt on the line as Charles Martin
00:02:06fights Vyacheslav Glaskov for the vacant title.
00:02:10Two heavyweight championship fights coming up with the big men of the sport.
00:02:15So, when you have an event this big, you need a really big team.
00:02:19And we've got one here.
00:02:20You like that Drake reference, huh?
00:02:21I love it, baby.
00:02:22Mauro Ranallo, Al Bernstein, and one of Brooklyn's favorite sons, Paulie Molinaggi.
00:02:27You know, guys, last time there was a heavyweight title fight here in Brooklyn, 115 years ago,
00:02:34Jim Jeffries knocked out Jim Corbett in the 23rd round.
00:02:38It's been a long time coming.
00:02:39And Al, it's also been a long time coming since we've seen some excitement in the heavyweight
00:02:44division.
00:02:45Tyson Fury recently beat Wladimir Klitschko.
00:02:47The heavyweight division had been dormant for so long, but now all of a sudden it's
00:02:51got interesting and become wide open.
00:02:53Yeah, it has.
00:02:54By the way, I was not at the Corbett-Jeffries fight.
00:02:56You pointed that out.
00:02:57I want to point that out.
00:02:58Now, you remember the movie Shrek?
00:02:59I do.
00:03:00Okay.
00:03:01Remember how Shrek finally convinced Donkey that ogres, like onions, have layers?
00:03:05Well, who knew the heavyweight division has layers?
00:03:08Okay.
00:03:09So, one layer we know has Fury and Wilder, two big men with big personalities, and Wladimir
00:03:14Klitschko trying to win his title back.
00:03:16Then just underneath that, we've got Martin and Glaskov, who we see fighting here tonight,
00:03:20and Alex Vander, the vetkin.
00:03:23And there are the three young guns in the heavyweight division, Luis Ortiz, Anthony
00:03:28Joshua, and Joseph Parker, who are champions in weighting, to be sure.
00:03:33And if that's not enough, David Haye won today, and he's trying to get back in the mix.
00:03:38Now, what does all that mean for the heavyweight division?
00:03:40It means that we have good, interesting, and we hope competitive fights still to come.
00:03:46Only a Hall of Famer can get away with comparing the heavyweight division to Shrek and using
00:03:51a donkey reference.
00:03:53You know, Paulie, hey, Deontay Wilder, he has been very vocal that he wants to follow
00:03:57in Lennox Lewis' footsteps, become the next undisputed heavyweight champion.
00:04:01But first, he's got to get through Artur Spilka, who, of course, will have the crowd on his
00:04:06side here tonight.
00:04:07And Spilka wants to make history himself here tonight.
00:04:10So, why don't you break down the main event for us?
00:04:13Well, Wilder's now been a champion for a year.
00:04:15He won a piece of the heavyweight title a year ago this weekend.
00:04:18So, that honeymoon phase is sort of passing.
00:04:20He's had a couple defenses against decent opposition, but not really the top, top level.
00:04:25And he's upping that level of opposition little by little.
00:04:27He's shown a tremendous amount of ability, a great jab, terrific athletic ability.
00:04:31But at times, he has a tendency to sometimes lose his composure.
00:04:35He tends to lose his positioning.
00:04:38At 6'7", you really, if you can maintain your composure and really maintain that proper
00:04:44distance in fights, you make it very difficult for guys to beat you.
00:04:47Vladimir Klitschko was a master at that in his prime.
00:04:49And Wilder has that same kind of height if he can really retain that composure he so
00:04:54desperately needs.
00:04:55Tonight in Spilka, he's got a guy who's dangerous if he loses that composure.
00:04:58Because Spilka is no stranger to exciting fights.
00:05:01He's gone up and down during his career, no stranger to the canvas.
00:05:04In a fight with Mike Mollo he had not too long ago, it was like a yo-yo fight.
00:05:08Both guys were up and down, up and down.
00:05:10Tremendously exciting.
00:05:11If you lose that composure with Spilka, you're giving him his only chance.
00:05:15Because Spilka needs that excitement.
00:05:17Spilka needs that exchange.
00:05:18And if you give him that exchange, not only does he become a dangerous puncher, but he
00:05:21also gets the crowd involved on his side.
00:05:23And tonight, the crowd is very pro-Polish.
00:05:25Well, if you talk to Deontay Wilder, I guess we're going to see some exchanges.
00:05:29He said his last two opponents have taken him rounds.
00:05:31He wants to get back to being exciting and knocking out opponents.
00:05:34We'll see if it happens here tonight.
00:05:35Now Mo, we're also going to begin with another heavyweight title fight.
00:05:39How did we get here?
00:05:40Well, Tyson Fury had his IBF belt stripped from him when he agreed to a rematch with
00:05:44Vladimir Klitschko, which will take place later this year.
00:05:48Instead of fighting his mandatory, who is Vyacheslav Glaskov.
00:05:51So now, Glaskov and the American, Charles Martin, they get the opportunity to fight
00:05:56for this vacant title.
00:05:57That's right.
00:05:58Glaskov, the Ukrainian, a 2008 Olympic bronze medalist.
00:06:01He owns a big advantage when it comes to high-level experience.
00:06:05He's gone seven rounds or more, nine times to only once, for Martin.
00:06:10You could say the boxing gods have been smiling upon Glaskov.
00:06:13He's remained unbeaten, despite three keepouts that many ringside observers felt his opponents
00:06:18deserved to win.
00:06:19Now, meanwhile, the undefeated American, Martin, is known as Prince Charles.
00:06:24And he's been getting the royal treatment from the IBF.
00:06:28He hasn't defeated anyone of note, and yet here he is vying for a vacant title.
00:06:32At 6'5", around 250 pounds, he has the size of a modern-day heavyweight.
00:06:37He's exhibited fight-ending power, and he's a southpaw to boot.
00:06:41What we're going to find out tonight, Brian, is if he's ready for his close-up.
00:06:45Well, Glaskov was very confident in our fighter meeting.
00:06:47He said, listen, in my opinion, Martin doesn't have the talent to hang with me, doesn't think
00:06:51he's fast at all.
00:06:52But one key point, he also, Glaskov, said he's never faced a lefty as a professional.
00:06:57Martin's a lefty.
00:06:58Let's see if that plays out here tonight.
00:06:59All right, I'm going to let you guys get ready to call all the action.
00:07:02In the meantime, we, as always, we invite you to visit our social media sites.
00:07:07Now, we are constantly posting new material.
00:07:10All right, it is time for our first world title fight of the evening.
00:07:14With the call, Mauro Ranallo, Al Bernstein, and Paulie Malignaggi.
00:07:20All right, BC, we are set for the vacant IBF heavyweight championship.
00:07:24It will pick the undefeated Charles Martin, looking to become just the sixth southpaw
00:07:29to own a piece of the heavyweight championship.
00:07:32He faces the 21-0-1 Vyacheslav Tsar Glaskov, who, as we mentioned, was an Olympic bronze
00:07:39medalist for the Ukraine.
00:07:41Let's go to Jimmy Leonard Jr.
00:07:47Ladies and gentlemen, from Barclays Center here in Brooklyn, New York, we welcome you
00:07:53as tonight we celebrate 30 years of Showtime Championship Boxing with the World Heavyweight
00:08:00Championship Doubleheader.
00:08:03And now, please welcome the boxers as they make their way to the ring for the first of
00:08:08our championship attractions, the IBF Heavyweight Championship of the World.
00:08:16And now, making his way to the ring, here is the IBF undefeated number one contender
00:08:22from the Ukraine, Vyacheslav, the Tsar Glaskov.
00:08:29One-year-old Glaskov from Ukraine now makes his home in Florida.
00:08:41It was back in March of last year that he defeated Steve Cunningham via contentious
00:08:47decision, Al, in a heavyweight title eliminator to earn the right to challenge for this alphabet
00:08:53organization's championship.
00:08:55He has won seven fights in a row since another contentious outcome, a 10-round draw in February
00:09:01of 2013 against Malik Scott.
00:09:03See, this is a young man who started boxing at age 10, right?
00:09:07Had 300 amateur fights.
00:09:09He is at 22 as a pro, and the fact of the matter is he's been a steady performer, but
00:09:15they want more than steady tonight.
00:09:17His team wants him to be aggressive.
00:09:19They think he's got to come out with fire tonight if he's going to win this fight.
00:09:23We'll see if he can.
00:09:25And now making his way to the ring, here is the undefeated number three IBF heavyweight
00:09:36contender, Prince Charles Martin.
00:09:49So who exactly is Prince Charles Martin?
00:09:52He's a 29-year-old born in St. Louis, now calling North Hollywood, California home.
00:09:57At the age of 17, he did a stint in jail for drug trafficking and, well, in fact, went
00:10:04to jail a total of three times.
00:10:06He said his life turned around when he joined the Mormon Church.
00:10:09He got his GED then.
00:10:11He was told about Michael King's All-American heavyweight program in Carson, California.
00:10:15Six months later, he went for an assessment.
00:10:18He began his boxing career, and now, Pauly?
00:10:20He's 22-0-1 with 20 wins inside the distance.
00:10:24Had over 60 amateur fights, which for a heavyweight is not a low total.
00:10:28And yet, again, without really any marquee names on his resume, somehow finds himself
00:10:34vying for a championship tonight.
00:10:36And that's the thing.
00:10:37That's the big question, the thing you just mentioned, Mauro, about not having a key heavyweight
00:10:40name on his resume.
00:10:41Yet he still remains undefeated and has come up slowly.
00:10:44The big question tonight is Glasgow has not faced a tremendously big heavyweight.
00:10:49He's got the bigger resume, but nobody really the size of Charles Martin.
00:10:52And that could be a bit of a difference maker.
00:10:55Martin does have a bit of athletic ability.
00:10:56He has a southpaw stance.
00:10:58As Brian Custer said in the introduction, Glasgow has never fought a southpaw as a pro.
00:11:02Probably as an amateur, but we'll see some things that can come into play.
00:11:05And again, he is dedicating this fight tonight to the late Michael King, the famed producer
00:11:10who developed Oprah, Wheel of Fortune, Dr. Phil.
00:11:13He died in May of last year at the age of 66.
00:11:15So Martin dedicating the fight tonight to the man who gave him his boxing career.
00:11:19Let's go to the tale of the tape, Al.
00:11:21When we look at these numbers, okay, if you just look at the numbers, Charles Martin has
00:11:27the edge in age.
00:11:29He has the edge in height.
00:11:31He has the edge in reach.
00:11:35He has the edge in everything.
00:11:38So you cross those off, and in every instance, he has the edge.
00:11:42But fights are not fought just by the numbers.
00:11:45Glasgow has better experience, as we've pointed out, and he is a fighter who believes he can
00:11:50win this, so we'll see how it goes.
00:11:52Intangibles.
00:11:53Yes, intangibles.
00:11:54And the rules for tonight's fight, there is no standing eight count, no three knockdown
00:11:58rule.
00:11:59The referee or doctor can stop the fight.
00:12:00A fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
00:12:02If an accidental foul or headbutt causes a fight to end within four rounds, it's a no
00:12:07decision.
00:12:08After four rounds, they go to the scorecards for a technical decision.
00:12:11Let's get the official introductions from our Hall of Fame ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon
00:12:15Jr.
00:12:19Ladies and gentlemen, a very good evening to you, and we welcome you to this big and
00:12:23historic night of boxing as Barclays Center hosts Brooklyn, New York's first heavyweight
00:12:30world title bouts in 116 years.
00:12:35Tonight's action is brought to you by Dabella Entertainment in association with Warriors
00:12:39Boxing and Shiltime as sponsored by Corona La Cerveza Mas Fina.
00:12:46This bout is sanctioned by the IBF, the president and supervisor in attendance, Daryl Peoples,
00:12:51along with the New York State Athletic Commission, the chairman, Tom Hoover.
00:12:55Introducing to you our three judges scoring this bout from ringside.
00:12:59From Buffalo, New York, Eric Marlinsky.
00:13:02From Montreal, Quebec, Canada, Benoit Roussel.
00:13:07And from San Juan, Puerto Rico, Nelson Vasquez.
00:13:12Introducing our third man to the ring, the referee in charge of this bout, Earl Brown.
00:13:19All right, fans, here we go.
00:13:22Twelve rounds of boxing for the vacant IBF Heavyweight Championship of the World.
00:13:32Introducing to you first, on my left, he is fighting out of the red corner, wearing blue
00:13:36trunks with white trim, fighting out of Sunny Island, Florida, by way of Lugansk, Ukraine.
00:13:42He weighed in at already 218 pounds.
00:13:45He is undefeated in his campaign in the ring with a record of 20 wins, no losses, one draw
00:13:50with 13 wins coming by way of knockout.
00:13:53Tonight he is making his first attempt at a world title.
00:13:56Here is the 2008 Super Heavyweight Olympic Bronze Medalist and the undefeated IBF number
00:14:03one contender.
00:14:04Introducing Vyacheslav, the Tsar Glaskov.
00:14:15And his opponent across the ring on my right, fighting out of the blue corner, this vacant
00:14:19championship attraction, wearing gold trunks with black trim, training in Big Bear Lake,
00:14:24California.
00:14:25He fights out of North Hollywood, California.
00:14:28He weighed in at 249.5 pounds.
00:14:32He also is undefeated with a record of 22 wins, no losses, and one draw with 20 big
00:14:38wins coming by way of knockout.
00:14:41Also making his first attempt at a world title, ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the hard
00:14:46hitting and undefeated IBF number three ranked heavyweight, introducing Prince Charles Martin.
00:14:56Once again, our referee in charge now to give instructions is Earl Brown.
00:15:10Okay, gentlemen, you received your instructions in the dressing room.
00:15:14Obey my commands at all times.
00:15:16Protect yourselves at all times.
00:15:19Now, anything from here down is going to be considered low.
00:15:22Anything from here down is going to be considered low.
00:15:26Touch gloves if you want.
00:15:29All right, back to your corners.
00:15:31So here as we begin the 30th anniversary of Showtime Championship Boxing tonight, four
00:15:35heavyweights will be throwing down, looking to put each other to sleep in the city that
00:15:39never sleeps.
00:15:43Referee Earl Brown calls for the bell.
00:15:47And we are underway with round one.
00:15:50I guess nobody wanted to touch gloves.
00:15:54Charles Martin in the gold with black trunks, Glaskov in the dark blue with white.
00:16:05Probably going to see a bit of a feel-out process being that there's a righty versus
00:16:08lefty, and a lot of times they've got to get acclimated to each other a little bit more
00:16:11than just the regular two right-handed fighters, you know?
00:16:14It is highly odd to have two self-possessed vying for a heavyweight championship on the
00:16:20same bill.
00:16:22Again, Martin looking to become just the sixth left-handed world champion, the first, of
00:16:26course, American Michael Moore back in 1994.
00:16:28I was just going to say, up until Michael Moore there hadn't been a Southpaw heavyweight
00:16:31champion, and now in this world of multiple heavyweight championships and multiple championships,
00:16:35we're now at sixth just 20 years later.
00:16:38We've talked about the opposition level, and Glaskov has fought much better fighters, but
00:16:43we've also talked about the size difference.
00:16:46One thing to watch for in this first round, and as we continue, can Glaskov get in the
00:16:50overhand right?
00:16:51That's a big weapon for him.
00:16:53And there are way fewer Southpaws in the heavyweight division than in any other division.
00:16:57The first lefty to challenge for the heavyweight title was like Spielka coming up in the main
00:17:02event, a European Karl Mildenberger, who was stopped by the great Muhammad Ali in 1966.
00:17:07Of course, the gold turns 74 tomorrow, the one-year anniversary of Deontay Wilder's heavyweight
00:17:12title reign.
00:17:13He's coming up in the main event against Artur Spielka, and there is a huge Polish contingent
00:17:19here at the Barclays Center.
00:17:21You saw Martin use that right hook there.
00:17:24Cesaro's Glaskov keeps moving to Martin's right, which obviously you want to do that
00:17:28if you're fighting a Southpaw, but Martin would be well-served to use that right hook,
00:17:32even just as a moving stopper, so to speak.
00:17:36I don't know if I used that correctly now.
00:17:38You're just trying to basically keep him from moving to that direction.
00:17:41Exactly.
00:17:42Glaskov has been able to get his jab in more, I think, early here than he might have anticipated.
00:17:48No, that's the thing with Glaskov.
00:17:50We talked about how he hasn't fought any Southpaws as a pro, but he's had an extensive amateur
00:17:53career, and you tend to fight a lot of those Southpaws in the amateur.
00:17:56Straight left hand down the middle scores for Martin.
00:18:00Getting to know you first round with 45 seconds left in the opening frame.
00:18:06Stiff jab from Glaskov.
00:18:10Neither man throwing a lot of punches.
00:18:12Martin only 22, Glaskov's 30, rather, for Martin, 25 for Glaskov.
00:18:18These are not active head weights, especially early in the fight.
00:18:21Martin has stopped 12 straight opponents.
00:18:23That's a career high.
00:18:27Comes forward with the left hand.
00:18:29Puts Glaskov on his back foot momentarily.
00:18:34Starting to swing a little harder as Martin.
00:18:36Starts to stick the pull-cue jab.
00:18:3980-inch reach for the 6'5 Prince Charles Martin.
00:18:48We will go to the keys to victory, and we will start out with Charles Martin.
00:18:53Now, he doesn't want to throw arm punches.
00:18:56He has done that from time to time.
00:18:58We didn't see much of that in round one.
00:19:00Combinations, he's a very good combination puncher once he gets going.
00:19:03He wants to get that left up to avoid the right hand and the chin down.
00:19:07He has a habit of keeping his chin way up.
00:19:10As for Glaskov, do not be a statue.
00:19:15Sometimes he just doesn't throw punches.
00:19:18And when he doubles with the jab, which we saw a little bit of in the first round,
00:19:22it's very effective, and of course I mentioned the overhand right.
00:19:25That will be his ticket, perhaps, in this fight.
00:19:37The bell in round two here at the Barclays Center,
00:19:40our first of two heavyweight championship fights.
00:19:46Glaskov has had issues with taller opponents with skill,
00:19:50but he also has fought the much better opposition than Martin.
00:19:55We'll have to see how this plays out as he attacks the body with the right hand.
00:20:00You can almost feel a little bit of difference in the weight of the right hand.
00:20:03He attacks the body with the right hand.
00:20:05You can almost feel a little bit of different demeanor from Glaskov here in round two.
00:20:09You know, they've harped on him to throw more punches,
00:20:12and he's coming out with a little more aggressive stance and attitude.
00:20:17In talking to Martin when we asked how he started boxing
00:20:20as he lands a nice straight left hand down the middle,
00:20:22he said he never grew up wanting to become heavyweight champion of the world.
00:20:25In fact, he had aspirations of playing in the NBA.
00:20:28He also considered a military career and dabbled in mixed martial arts
00:20:33returning to the sweet science at the age of 19
00:20:35as Glaskov attacks the body with the right.
00:20:40And it's easier target to reach is the body for Glaskov being so much shorter.
00:20:43The straight right hand to the stomach is probably the safest punch at the moment
00:20:47while he's experimenting to see if he can find anything else.
00:20:49Yeah, that's a good point.
00:20:51Let's go! Let's go!
00:20:53You're out of here! We're done!
00:20:56Fuck you!
00:20:59Neither of these men will push a hugely fast pace,
00:21:03or they haven't in the past.
00:21:05Well, like you said, Al, during the fighter meeting,
00:21:07his camp told us that Glaskov, they wanted to make him meaner,
00:21:10they wanted him to start more aggressively.
00:21:12Yeah, they do.
00:21:14Especially in a fight like this where Martin doesn't have the experience at this level,
00:21:17you kind of want to stop bossing it early to Glaskov
00:21:19and show him that, hey, you don't belong at this level.
00:21:21If you let him work himself into the fight,
00:21:23he's going to gain that confidence.
00:21:25Glaskov's biggest win came in March of 2014,
00:21:27winning a 12-round unanimous decision
00:21:29against 37-year-old former light heavyweight
00:21:31and cruiserweight champion Thomas Adamek.
00:21:33And again, Martin,
00:21:35well, the names he's defeated
00:21:37aren't even household names of their own households, guys.
00:21:41Glaskov, definitely the highest level fighter he's fought.
00:21:44But you know, Henry Tillman said it,
00:21:46and we see a little bit of it now.
00:21:48He said, the thing about Charles Martin
00:21:50that impresses him, and of course Tillman a former
00:21:52world Olympic champion
00:21:54and a great pro,
00:21:56he said he's calm.
00:21:58He stays calm, stays within himself,
00:22:00and that's what he likes.
00:22:02So this moment may not be too much for him.
00:22:05Martin has been very active
00:22:07by today's standards, went 4-0 last year
00:22:09as they exchanged body shots.
00:22:11His main trainer is Jamal Abdullah.
00:22:15Under 30 seconds left in the second,
00:22:17a cautious start
00:22:19to this heavyweight affair.
00:22:21Glaskov, not only with the jab,
00:22:23but when he's thrown the left hook,
00:22:25which I think is very effective against the lefty,
00:22:27he has landed that punch.
00:22:29It's not his money punch, but I think it's something
00:22:31he wants to throw more of in this fight.
00:22:33And it comes over that blind shoulder
00:22:35because it's coming from that blind side from the back
00:22:37because the southpaw, you know, your right shoulder
00:22:39is your leader, so if your shot comes from behind,
00:22:41sometimes they don't see it, Alex,
00:22:43so yeah, it's a good point.
00:22:46Let's go to Jim Gray standing by with Deontay Wilder.
00:22:48All right, Mauro, thank you very much.
00:22:50Champ, you guys got after each other
00:22:52pretty good at the photo op.
00:22:54What was the problem, and is there some bad blood?
00:22:56No, it's not bad blood, just
00:22:58on his behalf, I think a little nervousness.
00:23:00You know, this is his first rodeo here
00:23:02on a big stage like this fighting for a title.
00:23:04I think he had more pressure going against himself
00:23:06than I. He had the Polish community,
00:23:08and then he wanted to be the first
00:23:10Polish heavyweight champion of the world.
00:23:12That's a lot of pressure on a guy that can't.
00:23:14And in our meeting yesterday, he signed this
00:23:16card to us when we left, and the new.
00:23:18And then he signed his name, Spilka.
00:23:20What do you make of that? Pretty confident?
00:23:22Well, you gotta have confidence in this business.
00:23:24This is the Hurt Game, and I'm looking
00:23:26to hurt him.
00:23:28What concerns you most? Nothing.
00:23:30Nothing at all. I'm in shape.
00:23:32I'm fit. I'm ready to go. I'm ready to break
00:23:34this curse of 115 years.
00:23:36I'm here in Brooklyn, baby. What other place to be to do it?
00:23:38You know, I'm ready to go.
00:23:40Best of luck, and he signed the card when I showed it to him.
00:23:42And still, Deontay Wilder.
00:23:44Deontay, we'll see you after the fight.
00:23:46That's coming up later tonight.
00:23:48The second of our two
00:23:50heavyweight title fights
00:23:52here in Brooklyn
00:23:54as the third round begins.
00:23:56Referee O'Brown telling them
00:23:58to watch their feet, of course, with the
00:24:00Orthodox vs. Southpaw fighter.
00:24:02Martin wants to keep that lead foot
00:24:04outside of Glasgow as Martin becoming a little
00:24:06more aggressive, and he said he was going to display
00:24:08an angry heart. He said
00:24:10that Glasgow style would be the easiest
00:24:12thing he's seen. He guaranteed it wouldn't
00:24:14go 12 rounds, so it might be
00:24:16the time to start getting busy up.
00:24:18Martin said, you know, nobody
00:24:20wants to see heavyweights go 12 rounds.
00:24:22They want to see knockouts. Martin's being very
00:24:24aggressive and trying to impose his will
00:24:26in this round. Glasgow has never been
00:24:28knocked down. And that's the thing
00:24:30about Martin, you know, with Glasgow, folks,
00:24:32it's just over his foot.
00:24:34You don't want him to get that confidence, and this fight started
00:24:36slow, and you want Martin to kind of work his way into it.
00:24:38Neither of these two heavyweights have been down
00:24:40in their respective pro careers. One thing
00:24:42I'd like to see Martin start trying, though, because Glasgow
00:24:44consistently tries that right hand to the stomach, and it's
00:24:46been a safe punch so far, because whether he lands it or not,
00:24:48he doesn't pay for it. I see Martin
00:24:50hold his ground, roll his right shoulder,
00:24:52and kind of come back to a left hook. Something
00:24:54bothered Glasgow during that
00:24:56knock, that slip,
00:24:58because just his demeanor
00:25:00as a fighter has changed.
00:25:02Clubbing, left hands by Martin.
00:25:04Trying to
00:25:07exploit his four and a half inch reach
00:25:09advantage with the jab.
00:25:11A minute and a half gone
00:25:13in round number three, scheduled for twelve
00:25:15for the vacant IBF title.
00:25:17And Al, you said it,
00:25:21he gets clipped.
00:25:23And I think he hurt his ankle.
00:25:25It was hurt from before.
00:25:29Can you continue?
00:25:31You don't want to fight?
00:25:33Alright, it's over. And the fight is over.
00:25:35Prince Charles Martin
00:25:37has just
00:25:39become the IBF
00:25:41heavyweight champion.
00:25:45Wow!
00:25:47And there's a celebration from the Martin
00:25:49family.
00:25:51You see that right away with Charles Martin.
00:25:53You see the bad
00:25:55breaks that Glasgow's had, the good breaks
00:25:57that Glasgow's had.
00:25:59It's almost weird, because he
00:26:01got a couple of draws against some high level
00:26:03fighters that maybe some people thought he didn't deserve.
00:26:05And then literally, no pun intended, a bad
00:26:07break here, he may have broken his ankle.
00:26:09Whatever the injury,
00:26:11he hurt his right leg,
00:26:13whether it's knee, his ankle,
00:26:15and you felt it from the, as I mentioned
00:26:17from the first slip,
00:26:19you could feel he wasn't the same.
00:26:21I think it was more the ankle
00:26:23than the punch then that hurt him.
00:26:25I agree.
00:26:27We'll kind of get a good look at it
00:26:29here to see what landed.
00:26:31Nothing landed.
00:26:33To be honest, I think the injury
00:26:35came from that.
00:26:38And let's take a look at the legs, because
00:26:40Yeah, that's what I thought
00:26:42here on the 4K camera.
00:26:44He throws a right
00:26:46to the body
00:26:48and their legs get
00:26:50tangled up and there's his right leg
00:26:52which twists
00:26:54in an odd kind of a way.
00:26:56It was his knee.
00:26:58And I believe
00:27:00he had already tweaked it before.
00:27:02And you, whatever the case,
00:27:04Paulie Malinowski, the fastest person alive
00:27:06to get a medical degree.
00:27:08I was just guessing
00:27:10once we didn't see any ankle roll.
00:27:12It's not a lot of big matter, I know it.
00:27:14I'll tell you what, Spielman and Waldron have to suddenly get ready
00:27:16quickly. They have to warm up quickly.
00:27:18This fight started so slowly.
00:27:20This is good, though. This is a good sign.
00:27:22He's walking off.
00:27:24That doesn't necessarily mean it's not a tear.
00:27:26No, no, exactly. But it shows his toughness.
00:27:29So, we will
00:27:31make it official now. Let's go up to
00:27:33Jimmy Lennon Jr.
00:27:39Ladies and gentlemen,
00:27:41we have the time of 1 minute
00:27:4350 seconds in round number
00:27:453. Glaskov suffering
00:27:47an injury to his knee
00:27:49and is unable to continue.
00:27:51He is the winner by way of
00:27:53technical knockout.
00:27:55Still undefeated.
00:27:57And the new IBF
00:27:59heavyweight champion of the world
00:28:01Prince
00:28:03Charles
00:28:05Martin
00:28:09So, Prince Charles
00:28:11Martin becomes the second current
00:28:13heavyweight champion, the second southpaw
00:28:15champion in history, joining
00:28:17another American Michael Moore.
00:28:19The sixth, joining another American Michael Moore.
00:28:21Let's go to Jim Gray, who's standing by with the winner.
00:28:23All right, Mauro. Thank you very much.
00:28:25I just spoke to Dr. Jeff Kaplan
00:28:27and he believes that it could
00:28:29be a torn right ACL
00:28:31in the knee
00:28:33which has caused the stoppage of this
00:28:35fight. Charles, congratulations
00:28:37to you. An abrupt
00:28:39ending, yet you still win
00:28:41the title. Kind of mixed emotions
00:28:43at this moment? Yeah, I still wanted to fight.
00:28:45You know,
00:28:47it was a 12 round fight.
00:28:49We trained for 12 rounds and we were just going to get
00:28:51stronger as the rounds went. When they go down,
00:28:53we go up. Did you notice
00:28:55anything that might have happened earlier
00:28:57in the fight that caused that knee to
00:28:59have the problem when it ended?
00:29:01Um, not really.
00:29:03He just kind of twisted his
00:29:05ankle, it looked like, when I
00:29:07hit him, you know, I guess the
00:29:09force of, you know...
00:29:11Actually, he didn't connect on that.
00:29:13No, but I'm saying, just
00:29:15anywhere I hit, anywhere I land,
00:29:17it's enough force.
00:29:19I hit him in the body and his legs would fly out.
00:29:21Back of him.
00:29:23It's true. Take a look right there, Charles.
00:29:25Here's what happens.
00:29:27You just kind
00:29:29of graze him right here. Take a look at what
00:29:31happens. Tell us what you're...
00:29:35Hey, it's
00:29:37boxing, you know, I don't know.
00:29:39Congratulations, Charles, under these conditions.
00:29:41I know you still have the championship. Good luck
00:29:43as the champ and thank you. Thank you.
00:29:45Alright, Mauro, back to you. So, Prince
00:29:48Charles Martin is the IBF heavyweight champion.
00:29:50Right now, an apology to Dr. Pauly
00:29:52Malinagi, as it appears it was a knee injury.
00:29:54Al, as we revisit what just
00:29:56went down, a strange start to the
00:29:5830th anniversary of Showtime Championship Boxing.
00:30:00Yeah, Pauly got his medical degree
00:30:02from the University of Brooklyn.
00:30:04Before there
00:30:06was the final
00:30:08stoppage, there was a slip.
00:30:10And here's where
00:30:14his leg got caught
00:30:16and he fell down. And I believe
00:30:18even though it was the left leg that got him,
00:30:20I think it tweaked his...
00:30:22His weight was on his right leg. He pulls back
00:30:24and his weight was on his right leg in a weird position.
00:30:26And when he gets up, look, he's limping a little bit.
00:30:28Yeah, he put his weight on his right leg.
00:30:30And his demeanor changed
00:30:32and then later, this is where
00:30:36the right knee apparently
00:30:38really got in trouble, Pauly.
00:30:40And again, he's pushing his weight from his left foot
00:30:42back on his right leg again
00:30:44And clearly, the right leg is already injured
00:30:46from the initial slip. And the right leg
00:30:48could not hold the weight up again.
00:30:50And that's the story.
00:30:52So, Prince Charles Martin
00:30:54is undefeated now at 23-0-1.
00:30:5621 wins inside the distance.
00:30:58We talked about the boxing gods
00:31:00smiling upon Czar Glaskov.
00:31:02They weren't smiling on him tonight
00:31:04as he suffers an injury and goes down
00:31:06to defeat for the first time.
00:31:10From an electorate Barclays Center
00:31:12in Brooklyn, New York, WBC
00:31:14heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder
00:31:16set to make his Big Apple debut
00:31:18with the third defense of his title

00:31:24heavyweight champion.
00:31:26Here is Jimmy Lennon Jr.
00:31:30And now, here is the challenger
00:31:32the number six contender
00:31:34from Poland
00:31:36the Polish pin
00:31:38Artur
00:31:40Szpilka!
00:31:46A thunderous
00:31:48ovation
00:31:50from the partisan Polish
00:31:52crowd here in Brooklyn
00:31:54most of them of course
00:31:56from nearby Greenpoint
00:31:58and they are here to see history
00:32:00they would like to will Artur Szpilka
00:32:02to becoming the first Polish
00:32:04born heavyweight champion
00:32:06he is 20-1
00:32:09Artur with 15 wins inside the distance
00:32:11and he is really shored up his skill set
00:32:13since making the move
00:32:15to Houston to work with
00:32:17respected trainer Ronnie Shields
00:32:19after a big victory over
00:32:21his compatriot Thomas Adamek
00:32:23he moved to Houston to work with Shields
00:32:25now 3-0 with 3 wins inside the distance
00:32:27Yeah, and the move to Texas
00:32:29has not only benefit Artur in the tax department
00:32:31with a state with no state taxes
00:32:33it's also benefited him boxing wise
00:32:35a great relationship with Ronnie Shields
00:32:37he's shown some consistency
00:32:39he's shown some improvement
00:32:41Szpilka is a top level fighter
00:32:43not just in his skills
00:32:45but also in the fact that he comes to fight
00:32:47you will not break him very easily
00:32:49and you gotta get him out of there
00:32:51to eventually beat him
00:32:53Yeah, under the tutelage of Shields
00:32:55he's improved his head movement and footwork
00:32:57Shields said Szpilka has to take the fight
00:32:59to Wilder
00:33:01now in his last two fights
00:33:03Szpilka was hit just 10 times by his opponents
00:33:05so he is a fresh challenger
00:33:07for Wilder
00:33:15and now please welcome to the ring
00:33:17the WBC
00:33:19heavyweight champion of the world
00:33:21the bronze bomber
00:33:23Deontay Wilder
00:33:35Instagrammer
00:33:43Deontay Wilder is not in Alabama anymore
00:33:45a mixed response at best
00:33:47there are definitely cheers
00:33:49from Matt Howe
00:33:51who says he wants to be the face
00:33:53of the heavyweight division
00:33:55even though he's hiding his face right now
00:33:57he says he's the most athletic guy in the division
00:33:59and he says that he wants to become
00:34:01the next embodiment
00:34:03of the greatest of all time
00:34:05we remember tomorrow is the one year anniversary
00:34:07of his championship win over Burminster Byrd
00:34:09just happened to be the birthday of Muhammad Ali
00:34:11and he would like to take a page out of Ali's playbook
00:34:13and take this to the people
00:34:15one of the things that I think is special
00:34:17about Deontay Wilder
00:34:19outside the ring
00:34:21is that he professes
00:34:23and is happy to do it unashamedly
00:34:25his love for this sport
00:34:27you know, he came to the sport late
00:34:29and he has the same kind of enthusiasm
00:34:31that you just had when you were amateur boxers
00:34:33you just had that exhilaration
00:34:35and you were excited about it
00:34:37and of course as fighters move on as professionals
00:34:39sometimes the ups and downs of the sport
00:34:41and the business and all the rest of it
00:34:43can make them less excited
00:34:45he's still at the point where
00:34:47what he's doing tomorrow I think that's good
00:34:49for the sport is, he's telling everybody
00:34:51I discovered this sport
00:34:53and I love it and you know what
00:34:55there's a lot to be said for it
00:34:57he's not yet jaded
00:35:00he's been a heavyweight champion since Brooklyn's Shannon Briggs
00:35:02in 2007
00:35:04he broke America's 17 fight win list streak
00:35:06in major heavyweight title bouts
00:35:08they're now 17 Americans among the top
00:35:1050 heavyweights
00:35:12but Wilder looking to become the first undisputed
00:35:14heavyweight champion since a man
00:35:16we just saw get interviewed by Jim Gray
00:35:18Lennox Lewis
00:35:20not everybody here
00:35:22is on his side
00:35:24you can't tell but some are
00:35:26and again it's all about adversity
00:35:28and overcoming adversity both inside
00:35:30and outside the ring Paulie
00:35:32exactly Mo, tonight he's going to have to come all of Greenpoint Brooklyn
00:35:34as well as Artur Szpilka
00:35:38let's go to the tail of the tape for tonight's main event
00:35:40well the most salient numbers
00:35:42here I think and they always are the case
00:35:44with Wilder, at least the men he's been
00:35:46fighting, is in fact his height
00:35:48and reach advantage
00:35:50and that's what they are banking
00:35:52on, that he can fight tall
00:35:54not lunge into his punches as Szpilka
00:35:56and Ronnie Shields wanted him to and he can use that
00:35:58height and reach, we'll see if he can
00:36:03back to Jimmy Lennon Jr

00:39:59of this heavyweight title fight
00:40:01many fans
00:40:03here
00:40:05in support of Poland's
00:40:07Artur Spilka
00:40:09there is the mandatory challenger
00:40:11Deontay Wilder
00:40:13Alexander Popiekun
00:40:15also in attendance
00:40:17a man that he has exchanged
00:40:19twitter barbs with Tyson Fury
00:40:21who shook up the heavyweight division
00:40:23when he upset Vladimir Klitschko
00:40:25Spilka is looking to upset Wilder
00:40:27tonight
00:40:29ring the bell
00:40:31referee Mike Griffin calls
00:40:33for the bell
00:40:35we are underway
00:40:37Wilder in the black
00:40:39Spilka in the black
00:40:41Wilder
00:40:43saying that it's all about the number 16
00:40:45this being January 16
00:40:472016 his beloved Alabama
00:40:49Crimson Tide
00:40:51winning their 16th national title
00:40:53this past Monday
00:40:55he even joked that maybe he beat Spilka
00:40:57in 16 seconds
00:40:59that won't be the case
00:41:01both guys in a very open stance
00:41:03Wilder very open
00:41:05Spilka very open
00:41:07Wilder already trying to throw a right hand
00:41:09Spilka of course Ronnie Shields
00:41:11they said
00:41:13I want Wilder to throw that right hand
00:41:15I can't wait for him to do it
00:41:17because he will get off balance
00:41:19and we will counter him
00:41:21we'll see if that's the case
00:41:23Spilka looking to exhibit his Polish power
00:41:25like Ivan Putzky
00:41:27just over a week away from the Royal Rumble
00:41:29he is ready to rumble
00:41:31but Deontay Wilder
00:41:33one minute gone
00:41:35Spilka using a lot of footwork
00:41:37and Ronnie Shields pointed out
00:41:39that he has good footwork
00:41:41he's not just attacking in a straight line
00:41:43yes he's trying to use those angles
00:41:45Deontay trying to get that jab going
00:41:47but it's difficult when the guy is moving like that
00:41:49and changing distance
00:41:51and it's also more difficult to jab at southpaws
00:41:5351% of Wilder's fights
00:41:55have ended in the first round
00:41:5718 first round KOs
00:41:59Spilka has recorded 5
00:42:01first round stoppage wins
00:42:05right now nobody getting comfortable
00:42:07in that danger zone
00:42:09where they are 6-12 inches closer to each other
00:42:11even when they let go of the bombs
00:42:13they are a little bit too far out of range
00:42:15but we'll probably see them warm to each other
00:42:17in the next round or two
00:42:19and neither man really wants a standard exchange
00:42:21with each other
00:42:23they just don't want to do that
00:42:25Wilder feels like he went with the right hand
00:42:27those are not the kind of right hands
00:42:29they want him to throw
00:42:31and that's because Spilka keeps changing that range
00:42:34it'll be there
00:42:36final minute of the first round
00:42:38we saw Charles Martin
00:42:40become the 6th southpaw champion
00:42:42can Spilka make it number 7
00:42:54Wilder
00:42:56avoids that looping left hand
00:42:58there's that telephone pole
00:43:00jab from Wilder
00:43:02and it's 83 inch reach
00:43:04and this pro polis crowd
00:43:06once again
00:43:08firmly behind
00:43:10the pin
00:43:12as I tell you Wilder sometimes exaggerates
00:43:14that back step on the defense
00:43:16Spilka would be better served to double his jab
00:43:18instead of just single throwing it
00:43:20and then letting go of the big left hand
00:43:22and with apologies Al you definitely can't hear a pin drop
00:43:24here at the Barclays Center tonight
00:43:32so we'll take a look at
00:43:34the keys to victory
00:43:36we'll start with the champion Deontay Wilder
00:43:38first he should
00:43:40fight tall
00:43:42he did that some of the first round
00:43:44most of it don't lunge
00:43:46he did that a couple times in round 1
00:43:48he's got to be careful
00:43:50and the right hand of course
00:43:52he tried the right on 5 or 6 different occasions
00:43:54didn't quite get it there
00:43:56as for Artur Spilka
00:43:58he has got to move his head
00:44:00he showed us that
00:44:02and he wants to set traps
00:44:04and by that I mean make Wilder lunge
00:44:06and then land the counter left
00:44:08and that's the counter left hand
00:44:10that he wants to get in
00:44:12they are singing here at the Barclays Center
00:44:24an amazing atmosphere
00:44:26I was going to say
00:44:28I was going to say
00:44:32round 2 underway
00:44:36great atmosphere
00:44:38stay off his foot
00:44:40stay off his foot
00:44:56Spilka off balance
00:44:58you see both guys a bit awkward
00:45:00in finding the range to each other
00:45:02Spilka going off balance
00:45:04we saw Wilder throw a couple of wild shots
00:45:07they've still got to get accustomed to the range
00:45:09and the distance of each other
00:45:11Spilka known mainly as a counter punching
00:45:13fighter but
00:45:15against a guy like Wilder
00:45:17he has to try to navigate that
00:45:19militarized zone and get on the inside
00:45:21don't you think Pauly
00:45:23and he's got to do it carefully
00:45:25because you want to avoid the right hand
00:45:27so hence why there's that bit of hesitation
00:45:29and of course Wilder the same thing
00:45:31he wants to avoid the big shots
00:45:33there's a nice counter right hand by Wilder
00:45:35Wilder made the point
00:45:37he hasn't even sparred with a lefty
00:45:39since he fought Aubrey Harrison
00:45:41three years ago
00:45:43for this fight he did
00:45:45but before that he hadn't sparred
00:45:47with a lefty for a long time
00:45:49so he's getting used to the process
00:45:59coming up on the midpoint of round number 2
00:46:01there's a couple of different ways
00:46:03you can jab out of southpaw
00:46:05one you can use that up jab Deontay likes to use
00:46:07when Spilka starts to parry it down
00:46:09next time you start feinting with it
00:46:11when he uses the parry you'll jab over the top of it
00:46:13instead
00:46:15Mark Breland is a trainer known for his incredible jab
00:46:17one of the best amateurs in American history
00:46:19and a native of Brooklyn says
00:46:21that he actually has four varieties of the jab
00:46:23including the one you just mentioned Pauly
00:46:25the up jab
00:46:27yeah but the up jab here is kind of to set up the other jab
00:46:29once you start getting used to parrying it
00:46:31once he starts parrying it and you feint with it
00:46:33what Spilka will do is go to parry at air
00:46:35his face will be exposed and you can jab over the top of that parry
00:46:37we're talking about jabs
00:46:39Spilka has started to use his jab
00:46:41much better here in this round
00:46:43there's a feint behind the first jab
00:46:45and you just want to parry
00:46:47like you're saying Alec
00:46:49he doubles it up, feints first then jabs
00:46:51he wants to gain that extra step
00:46:53before throwing that lefty
00:46:55nice combination by Spilka
00:46:57straight down the middle
00:46:59he put it best when talking about the crowd support
00:47:01here in Brooklyn for the Polish fighter
00:47:03he said it's going to be like having
00:47:05an additional pair of gloves
00:47:07in the ring with him
00:47:09Spilka's having a pretty good second round here
00:47:11whether he's won it I don't know
00:47:13he might have but he's making Deontay Wilder
00:47:15uncomfortable enough to land some punches
00:47:17I don't think anybody's super comfortable yet
00:47:19it's weird Al
00:47:21there's a lot of jostling for position
00:47:23they're both on edge I feel
00:47:26Wilder has told us
00:47:28two things he likes, self pause
00:47:30and guys who like to pressure him
00:47:36right now it's round
00:47:38number three, Deontay Wilder
00:47:40defending his portion of the heavyweight
00:47:42title against Artur Spilka
00:47:50we talked about the fact
00:47:52Paulie talked about the fact that
00:47:54Deontay Wilder is trying to stay comfortable
00:47:56you can kind of see that in the number of punches
00:47:58that he threw in the last round
00:48:00Wilder threw 26, Spilka threw 23
00:48:02so they're not
00:48:04comfortable enough to
00:48:06push up their volume a little bit
00:48:08although I thought Spilka probably won the second round
00:48:10Spilka on the attack
00:48:12clinching with Wilder
00:48:14in addition to working with Ronnie Shields
00:48:16Spilka also dedicated himself to
00:48:18Plex Guru Danny Arnold's rigorous strength
00:48:20and conditioning program
00:48:22Wilder has added some new punches to his repertoire
00:48:24most notably uppercuts
00:48:26from different angles
00:48:28those are going to be hard to use
00:48:30from the distance they've been fighting right now
00:48:32maybe as the fight wears on and they tire out
00:48:34they'll start to fight at a bit closer range
00:48:36we may start to see some of those
00:48:38Wilder said he was concerned about Spilka being dirty
00:48:40in this fight but in fact Spilka has never
00:48:42committed a foul
00:48:44never been penalized for a foul
00:48:46so far there's no evidence of that
00:48:48I'll tell you if there's any advantage even if Spilka's missing wildly
00:48:50Beante, Beante not on the front foot
00:48:52can't get any leverage on his shots
00:48:54his power becomes less dangerous
00:48:56it's a very good point
00:48:58and Ronnie Shields told us that they want
00:49:00Wilder to throw that right hand
00:49:02they want to counter it
00:49:04they feel he keeps it low and right for the counter
00:49:06just past the midpoint
00:49:08of round three
00:49:12Wilder's stance
00:49:14is more open than
00:49:16sometimes he fights more squared up
00:49:18against his opponents
00:49:20and he's doing that tonight
00:49:22and I think he's trying to adjust to the left-hander
00:49:24nice block there by Wilder
00:49:26Spilka with the biggest win
00:49:28of his career coming against compatriot
00:49:30Tomasz Adamik, one of five Polish
00:49:32fighters who have failed in their quest to become
00:49:34heavyweight champ, including
00:49:36four-time title challenger Andrew Gulato
00:49:38who probably has the best nickname ever
00:49:40in the most asked foul poll
00:49:42just ask Riddick Burr
00:49:44I've mentioned a lot
00:49:47a block of the overhand left of Spilka
00:49:49the reason I said nice block is because
00:49:51when a guy starts to block shots instead of
00:49:53stepping back, he's starting to get used to the positioning
00:49:55he's starting to maintain his position
00:49:57and he's going to start to look for counters
00:49:59he's getting more comfortable at close range
00:50:01Spilka, being kept at bay momentarily
00:50:03by the jab, now moving forward
00:50:05under 30 seconds left in round three
00:50:07good body work by Spilka
00:50:09and that left hand he threw
00:50:11got in a little bit against Wilder
00:50:13oh, counter right hand by Wilder
00:50:15and again, maintaining position
00:50:17by Wilder, he didn't step back there
00:50:19he just slipped and counted
00:50:33nice left hand from Spilka
00:50:35while things percolate here
00:50:37things got heated when these two were
00:50:39featured in a photo shoot at the Freedom Tower
00:50:41earlier this week
00:50:43Squad!
00:50:45Going down!
00:50:50It's going to get crazy, baby
00:50:52And still!
00:50:54Tomorrow you're going down!
00:50:56Sunday, Saturday, baby
00:50:58You're going down!
00:51:00And still!
00:51:02And still!
00:51:04And still!
00:51:06Going down!
00:51:08And still!
00:51:10Hey!
00:51:12You're going fucking down!
00:51:14You're going fucking down!
00:51:18And look who's here
00:51:20another man in hope for
00:51:22mercurial behavior to say the least
00:51:24Tyson Fury, the man who upset
00:51:26Vladimir Klitschko
00:51:28He and Deontay Wilder have gone back and forth
00:51:30on Twitter
00:51:32And man, it's the night of heavyweights here in Brooklyn
00:51:34You saw some of the soccer
00:51:36when we didn't come out of Spilka
00:51:38Yeah, the headbutt
00:51:40Little old school MMA
00:51:42there, Paul
00:51:44For WWE
00:51:46So through
00:51:48three rounds, according to the show stats
00:51:50Spilka has landed 18
00:51:52of his power punches to 6
00:51:54by Wilder. Remember, power punches are
00:51:56anything that's not a jab
00:51:58So it's interesting
00:52:00Some of those are body shots
00:52:02We shouldn't underestimate Spilka's had some success
00:52:04to the body
00:52:07Very close and competitive fight
00:52:09And a terrific atmosphere
00:52:11to kick off the 30th year of
00:52:13Showtime Championship Boxing
00:52:15See, they're starting to get a little
00:52:17closer to each other, getting accustomed to that
00:52:19distance. And it's going to happen as the rounds
00:52:21progress. And with those open
00:52:23stances, some big shots can win
00:52:25because neither guy is in tight in a stance
00:52:27That's a really good point
00:52:297 inch reach advantage
00:52:31for Wilder and yet, thus far
00:52:33really unable to exploit it
00:52:35We have seen him in the past. He told us
00:52:37that he was going to get back to business tonight
00:52:394 rounds or less. Well, he has
00:52:41a minute 53 to become prophetic
00:52:43He has thrown
00:52:45the right hand but missed it
00:52:47in most cases
00:52:49And has certainly not landed one that made a difference
00:52:51So there's the doubling of the jab by Spilka
00:52:53even though it didn't get there that Paulie talked about
00:52:55Yeah, but again now, like I said
00:52:57you get Deontay's momentum
00:52:59to go backwards, he becomes less dangerous as a puncher
00:53:01One thing
00:53:03All we can say, Spilka is not odd
00:53:05by this moment or intimidated
00:53:07So whatever that's worth, one punch
00:53:09can change this fight of course
00:53:11I think we've seen that throughout
00:53:13the build up to the fight, Al, you're right
00:53:15during the conference call, during the interview
00:53:17on Showbox with our own Steve Farhood
00:53:19He has definitely exhibited
00:53:21uber confidence and it is
00:53:23serving him well thus far
00:53:25And you know what he's doing? He's moving his head
00:53:27While some heavyweights
00:53:29just don't do that
00:53:31A little mouse underneath
00:53:33the right cheek
00:53:35underneath the right eye of Spilka
00:53:37probably from some of those jabs
00:53:39Final minute of the 4th round and again the jab
00:53:41stopped by Wilder who's beginning to establish
00:53:43it now
00:53:45Yeah, Wilder's probably winning this round
00:53:47He's very likely
00:53:49And this is the advantage Wilder has at this distance
00:53:51As they started, they've only gotten about 6 inches closer
00:53:53but that's just enough for Wilder to start landing his jab
00:53:55So Spilka's gotta skip this distance
00:53:57He's either gonna be all the way in or all the way out
00:53:59That's a very good point. There's the body work by Spilka
00:54:01which he's tried to do
00:54:03And that's something that Wilder
00:54:05Oh! A stinging right hand
00:54:07but Spilka takes it
00:54:09and stays in the pocket
00:54:11Now Wilder
00:54:13Yeah
00:54:17That was a hard shot
00:54:19Another right hand
00:54:21by Deontay Wilder
00:54:23As Wilder starts to let go of more of these right hands
00:54:25We're starting to finally see the right hands
00:54:27and the patterns up his sleeve
00:54:29like he said for those right hands
00:54:31Spilka's headed to the 5th round
00:54:33Deontay Wilder though with a terrific 4th
00:54:41I need you to focus
00:54:43Focus, focus, focus, okay?
00:54:45Focus on what you're doing
00:54:47Now listen, you've got to start backing him up a little bit
00:54:49Now you've got to get close to him
00:54:51Now close, okay?
00:54:53For the first 3 rounds
00:54:55Deontay Wilder wasn't able to get his right hand in
00:54:57but there he landed a beautiful jab
00:54:59and came with a straighter right hand
00:55:01than he has been throwing
00:55:03The jab sets it up
00:55:05In fact the jab even lands
00:55:07and that is not a wide right hand
00:55:09and he did not lunge when he threw it
00:55:11and his family
00:55:13loved seeing that
00:55:15They made the trip up from Alabama
00:55:17as did Deontay Wilder
00:55:19and they're enjoying the Big Apple
00:55:21Big Apple
00:55:23Be diligent, okay?
00:55:25Don't get caught with anything stupid
00:55:27Be diligent
00:55:35The bell and round number 5
00:55:37for Deontay Wilder's
00:55:39portion of the heavyweight championship
00:55:43The man who holds
00:55:45two of those titles, Tyson Fury at ringside
00:55:47another man who
00:55:49won his title due to injury stoppage
00:55:51earlier tonight, Charles Martin
00:55:53in the dressing room I'm sure still celebrating
00:55:55It's the night of heavyweights
00:55:57to kick off the year here on Showtime
00:55:59We heard Roddy Shields say
00:56:01to Spilka
00:56:03that he had to back up
00:56:05Wilder
00:56:07and we'll see if he can
00:56:09and the last round by the way, one of the reasons
00:56:11Wilder was successful is he landed 8 of 24 jabs
00:56:13according to show staff
00:56:15and that was an improvement
00:56:17He holds in the heavyweight division
00:56:19Listen to the crowd
00:56:21Yes it is, an exciting time here
00:56:23See Wilder's starting to back up a little less
00:56:25even when he backs up defensively
00:56:27the steps are much smaller, he's getting comfortable
00:56:29at range
00:56:31and it also helps his jab
00:56:37Spilka's thrown a lot of right hooks
00:56:39but not so many left hands
00:56:41he hasn't been able to get the distance to throw
00:56:43Nice left hand
00:56:47Double jab
00:56:49from Spilka
00:56:53There's a right hand from Wilder
00:56:55that glances off
00:56:57Archer Spilka
00:56:59You can say you're ready to counter that big right hand
00:57:01but when it's actually flying at you like a missile
00:57:03sometimes you're just glad you got out of the way of it
00:57:05Well and Wilder isn't lunging as much when he throws it
00:57:07which is part of what they were hoping would happen
00:57:09Yep
00:57:11Mark Breland, his trainer J.P.'s
00:57:13his assistant trainer
00:57:15since day one
00:57:17the story of Deontay Wilder, well documented
00:57:19aspired to play for Alabama
00:57:21Crimson Tide basketball
00:57:23or football as Spilka
00:57:25bounced that off of Wilder's arm
00:57:27his first daughter, born with spina bifida
00:57:29Wilder had to make additional income
00:57:31and began boxing
00:57:33and here, after a truncated amateur career
00:57:35the last male to medal
00:57:37for the United States
00:57:39a bronze in 2008
00:57:41and now the heavyweight champion
00:57:43right there
00:57:45as Spilka stepped on his foot, I believe
00:57:47simultaneous right hands
00:57:49Wilder's on straight right as well
00:57:51Wilder has been down once
00:57:53in his career, came back to stop
00:57:55Eric Skonjur
00:57:57and Spilka going on the attack
00:57:59and he's been buzzed by Eric Molina
00:58:01and by Stiverne
00:58:03so you can make him feel those punches
00:58:05and we'll see if Spilka did it
00:58:07and even Yohan Dualapish in his last fight
00:58:09almost closed his eyes
00:58:11he would be the third guy in a row
00:58:13not to be afraid of fighting Deontay Wilder
00:58:15he felt that his record is built
00:58:17on people who are already mentally defeated
00:58:19before the opening bell
00:58:21well this round has certainly been interesting
00:58:23oh wow
00:58:25nice right uppercut
00:58:27by Deontay Wilder
00:58:31we are through five in Brooklyn
00:58:37it's heating up
00:58:41you've got to back him up
00:58:43you've got to back him up
00:58:45he's a homeless crowd
00:58:47he ain't doing shit
00:58:49but then swing him
00:58:51you've got to back him up
00:58:53there may have been a moment in that last round
00:58:55where Anton Spilka landed something
00:58:57that created some issues
00:58:59for Deontay Wilder
00:59:01Deontay kind of thinking about whether
00:59:03I should hold or punch back
00:59:05and then Wilder later on
00:59:07in the round landing that
00:59:09right hand
00:59:11a little off balance
00:59:13and Spilka trying to respond to it
00:59:17and we talked a little bit about
00:59:19Spilka having an uppercut
00:59:21but Wilder landing that one
00:59:23now that didn't land as flush as it might have
00:59:25but that was a round in which
00:59:27both men got a little bit done
00:59:29and made it very interesting
00:59:35this is round number six
00:59:37from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn
00:59:39scheduled for 12 for Deontay Wilder's
00:59:41WBC Heavyweight Championship
00:59:43Mauro Ranallo, Hall of Famer Al Bernstein
00:59:45and Paulie Malignaggi ringside
00:59:59one-two combination by Wilder
01:00:01the interesting thing is
01:00:03we have seen about three or four
01:00:05really good right hands
01:00:07by Deontay Wilder
01:00:09and while they have been effective scoring punches
01:00:11they haven't yet hurt Spilka
01:00:13or apparently hurt him
01:00:19Spilka has been knocked out five times
01:00:21including twice against Brian Jennings
01:00:23in his lone loss
01:00:25back in January of 2014
01:00:27you see both these men as they move past
01:00:29the fifth round
01:00:31of course Wilder showed
01:00:33in his last several fights
01:00:35that he can go the distance
01:00:37he had not gone very long
01:00:39and demonstrated that to everyone's satisfaction
01:00:41clubbing right hand
01:00:43he's been the distance one time
01:00:45that was when he won the title
01:00:47against Berman Stevern
01:00:49a year ago this weekend
01:00:51went to the eleventh round
01:00:53in his last fight before stopping
01:00:55he wanted to help us
01:00:57and now in round six
01:00:59against the upstart Archer Spilka
01:01:03it was twenty and one with fifteen wins
01:01:05coming inside the distance
01:01:07the reformed soccer hooligan
01:01:09who started as a goalkeeper at soccer
01:01:11but received three red cards
01:01:13from knocking on opposing players
01:01:15and Wilder looking to knock him out
01:01:17but Spilka moves away from the ropes
01:01:19Spilka tried to throw an uppercut from range
01:01:21and Wilder hit him with the right hand
01:01:23at that range
01:01:27it's getting interesting though isn't it
01:01:29you feel like
01:01:31something's going to land somewhere here
01:01:33that's going to make a difference
01:01:35final minute of the sixth
01:01:37the crowd has not
01:01:39subsided
01:01:41they started making noise
01:01:43during the undercut
01:01:45and the largely contingent of Polish fans
01:01:47firmly behind Archer Spilka
01:01:49who goes on the attack
01:01:51now I was just going to say something
01:01:53and Spilka proved me wrong
01:01:55he never comes back with the right hook
01:01:57again and again here
01:01:59it's that extra punch you throw in the combination
01:02:01and he's starting to do it now
01:02:03and it's keeping Deontay on that defensive
01:02:05final thirty seconds of the sixth round
01:02:07Deontay stabs him in the body with a jab
01:02:15the champ is Spilka
01:02:21painting and making his Wilder react
01:02:23so that's kind of interesting
01:02:25close round here
01:02:27tactics
01:02:29you have a twelve round boxing match
01:02:31a little adjustment you start to see right now
01:02:41Spilka's girlfriend Camila
01:02:43very animated and emotional
01:02:45watching her man here
01:02:47vying for the championship
01:02:49to see
01:02:51their significant other
01:02:53do this for a living
01:02:55here is where Spilka
01:02:57goes back and here's where I believe
01:02:59he tries an uppercut
01:03:01and pays the price for it
01:03:03tries the uppercut
01:03:05gets nailed with a right hand
01:03:07you can't throw an uppercut from that far out
01:03:09especially with your hands down
01:03:11and that was a perfect example of him getting hit
01:03:13and a great job by the way by the folks in the truck
01:03:15for demonstrating that
01:03:19I need combinations
01:03:21I've got to have combinations
01:03:23keep boxing him up
01:03:25let's go
01:03:27get that towel
01:03:35we are at the midpoint
01:03:37of this championship fight
01:03:39Al you heard Mr. Shields
01:03:41demanding combinations
01:03:43what is it going to take for Spilka
01:03:45to get to the range
01:03:47and how much he needs to deliver those
01:03:49well he's done it a little bit
01:03:51when he's gotten inside
01:03:53and even sometimes from range
01:03:55but you know
01:03:57it's hard to put your hands together
01:03:59when you're too far
01:04:05now Wilder has Spilka in the corner
01:04:07feinting with the left
01:04:09teaming up with the right
01:04:11that glances off and they clinch
01:04:13smart move by Spilka to hold there
01:04:15through 6 rounds
01:04:17what do you think about the footwork
01:04:19of both of these fighters
01:04:21beginning with the champion
01:04:23well I think Deontay
01:04:25at first early part of the fight
01:04:27he was making too big of defensive moves
01:04:29stepping too far out
01:04:31and as the fight's gone on
01:04:33he's gotten a bit more comfortable
01:04:35defensive moves have gotten shorter
01:04:37so he can make counters like that
01:04:39as he stepped back before
01:04:41he was out of range to counter
01:04:43well it's funny this is the first
01:04:45round of the fight Mo
01:04:47there's a clear winner up to this point
01:04:49and that's Wilder
01:04:51I've given him the last few rounds
01:04:53almost every round is arguable
01:04:55there's been very little difference
01:04:57neither fighter effective in long stretches
01:04:59the difference may be to the judges
01:05:01Wilder's shots are cleaner, easier to see
01:05:03a lot of Spilka's punches are blocked
01:05:05like that one right there
01:05:07midpoint of round 7
01:05:10there's the left hand to the body
01:05:12by Spilka
01:05:15Wilder's getting in the kind of right hands
01:05:17now that hurt fighters
01:05:19but right now
01:05:21Spilka's taking them very well
01:05:23yeah they're usually anesthetic right hands
01:05:2534 of his 35 wins
01:05:27coming inside the distance
01:05:29the highest knockout ratio
01:05:31of any current heavyweight
01:05:33you know you talked about the footwork
01:05:35I like what I like about Spilka
01:05:37he keeps changing the target
01:05:39you see he took that step left
01:05:41back to his right then back left
01:05:43he's bobbing up and down with his head
01:05:45that head movement we talked about
01:05:47implicated by Ronnie Shields
01:05:49he's making himself a difficult target
01:05:51but he's trying to adjust as the round progresses
01:05:53that's the best jab Spilka's thrown in this fight
01:05:55one thing Spilka hasn't been able to do
01:05:57is get Wilder on the rope
01:05:59he's backing him up momentarily
01:06:01Wilder winding up with a wild right hand
01:06:03stalking Spilka now
01:06:06one thing I want to see is the combination
01:06:08of the head movement with punches
01:06:10Spilka moves a nice body shot
01:06:12to the body by Spilka
01:06:14his confidence seems to be growing
01:06:16Spilka moves his head and then he stops to throw punches
01:06:18you want to make that transition right off the smooth move
01:06:20right as you're moving your head
01:06:22ready to throw the punches
01:06:24so it's not predictable
01:06:26you know one heavyweight champion
01:06:28with a great jab that influenced another one
01:06:30was the Eastern Assassin
01:06:32there's a left hand by Spilka
01:06:35and so far Wilder's jab
01:06:37he brings it back low
01:06:39fun round
01:06:41a fun crowd
01:06:43yes
01:06:47well in the midst of a round in which both men
01:06:49got some things done there was this right hand
01:06:51again the jab started it
01:06:53that was very early in the round
01:06:55and then later
01:06:57in the round he would again land
01:06:59a right hand this time
01:07:01as Spilka's throwing
01:07:03the jab and landing it
01:07:05by the way a counter right hand
01:07:07by Wilder but at the end
01:07:09of the round Arthur Spilka was really
01:07:11coming forward establishing
01:07:13himself not everything landing perfectly
01:07:15but he was pushing
01:07:17Wilder back and
01:07:19the number of punches landed in that round by both men
01:07:21pretty close
01:07:23well there's yeah
01:07:25finally a smile but man an emotional
01:07:27night for Camilla but definitely something to cheer about
01:07:29Al yeah a very different kind of
01:07:31emotions
01:07:35round number eight
01:07:39reminiscent of James DeGale's sister
01:07:41reacting in his wild
01:07:43fight with Alicia
01:07:45Spilka what a way to close out the year
01:07:47what a way to kick off the year
01:07:49of course we ended the year with
01:07:51right here in Brooklyn Daniel Jacobs
01:07:53beating Peter Quillen in just 85
01:07:55seconds
01:08:01the jab of
01:08:03Spilka is becoming a factor right now
01:08:09and that
01:08:11that is interesting
01:08:13in its own perspective
01:08:15there Al with a guy who's you know got a
01:08:17huge reach advantage we didn't expect to be
01:08:19even saying that did we no
01:08:27this fight is not being fought at a wild
01:08:29pace there's only 204
01:08:31punches by Wilder 194 by
01:08:33Spilka so it's not
01:08:35a wild pace but you have
01:08:37this sense of drama about somebody
01:08:39landing something and it's a much better pace
01:08:41than Fury Klitschko
01:08:43but that snail race was a much better pace than
01:08:45Fury Klitschko
01:08:47good thing Tyson Fury can't hear you
01:08:49there was a method to Fury's madness
01:08:51yes there was I agree
01:08:53but when Klitschko what he scored a tantamount
01:08:55of a deck of cards worth of punches the whole fight
01:08:57what did he do
01:09:01nearing the midpoint of round number
01:09:03eight
01:09:05in some ways actually what Spilka's trying to do
01:09:07by changing positioning being a bit
01:09:09awkward is a bit of what Fury
01:09:11did to Klitschko it's just that
01:09:13Spilka's not six foot ten exactly
01:09:15that's precisely right Paulie
01:09:19aren't you glad you're right
01:09:21sometimes
01:09:23I was right all the time I'd be much wiser
01:09:25left hand
01:09:27I think that was one of Paulie's
01:09:29New Year's resolutions to always be right
01:09:31final minute
01:09:33of the eighth round
01:09:35it's just me telling you're right so you can still
01:09:37be wrong
01:09:39you know Spilka got the left hand in there
01:09:41a moment ago Mauro as you pointed out
01:09:43and that he just has to unlimber that punch
01:09:45leads with it there
01:09:47but he's got a bit of a nosebleed
01:09:49and I think that jab
01:09:51caused a little bit of physical
01:09:53structural damage
01:10:01there's Spilka going back to the body
01:10:03backs Wilder up but then stays
01:10:05in the center of the ring
01:10:07using that upper body movement
01:10:09looping left hand
01:10:11blocked
01:10:15there's a lead right hand by Wilder
01:10:17and it slips
01:10:19alright
01:10:21Spilka's on his tire a little bit
01:10:23he looks a bit more
01:10:25he's got to be careful
01:10:27I know we're in Brooklyn but that was
01:10:29Wilder getting a Bronx cheer
01:10:33Spilka's got a chin though fellas
01:10:41some off balance work
01:10:43with Wilder now there he was
01:10:45lunging but
01:10:47Spilka not
01:10:49countering instead it was just Wilder
01:10:51lunging
01:11:11keep that jab in the face
01:11:13you've got to back him up
01:11:17you get on the left
01:11:21you're competitive right
01:11:23you understand
01:11:25and bring the rope back behind you
01:11:27let's go
01:11:29let's go to work
01:11:35the ballot round 9 we welcome those of you
01:11:37that have been watching the NFL playoffs
01:11:39a thrilling overtime win for the Arizona
01:11:41Cardinals over the Green Bay Packers
01:11:43and we're in the midst of a heavyweight thriller
01:11:45between Deontay Wilder
01:11:47the WBC heavyweight champion
01:11:49in the black and gray defending the title
01:11:51against the man looking to become
01:11:53the first Polish board heavyweight champion
01:11:55Artur Spilka
01:11:57when you hear Mark Wheeler just talk to you in the corner
01:11:59he wants Deontay to back up
01:12:01Spilka and throw punches in combination
01:12:03and the tactics behind that the method behind that
01:12:05madness is this
01:12:07when Spilka gets backed up he puts himself out of position
01:12:09hands low pulls back
01:12:11so if you put a combination together
01:12:13those couple punches may put Spilka out of position
01:12:15maybe the 3rd and 4th shots may land
01:12:17and really hurt him
01:12:21of course the same thing with Deontay
01:12:23our unofficial scorer Steve Ford has
01:12:25Wilder up by 3 rounds
01:12:2978-75 with
01:12:311 minute gone here in the 9th
01:12:33and there's a combination by Wilder
01:12:35worn by the referee
01:12:37for a rabbit punch
01:12:40there's a left hand
01:12:42to the side of the head by
01:12:44Spilka and there's some punchmanship
01:12:46and that's what I was trying to tell you before
01:12:48Deontay makes the same exact mistake
01:12:50so you could essentially be the same instruction to Spilka
01:12:52back up Deontay and he'll put himself out of position
01:12:54Spilka getting busy with the left
01:12:56and I'll tell you what Spilka's doing now
01:12:58he's doubling up with that left hand
01:13:00so when the first one gets there it doesn't get there
01:13:02he's throwing another one and that's a big difference
01:13:04in what he's doing but he's known as a counter puncher
01:13:06and we've seen much in the terms of
01:13:08effective counter punching as we look
01:13:10at these comparisons Al
01:13:12it is interesting and Spilka has gone
01:13:14to the body more
01:13:16no surprise
01:13:18we're not surprised
01:13:22Wilder landing a huge percentage
01:13:30Wilder flicking the jab
01:13:32there's a right hand
01:13:34but off balance delivered with 1 minute
01:13:36left in the 9th round
01:13:38it's a close round
01:13:40where we're at in scoring remains to be seen
01:13:42but Spilka is kind of making a comeback
01:13:44after a couple rounds that haven't gone well for him
01:13:46forcing a bit of an uncomfortable tempo
01:13:48and pace
01:13:50a big up down
01:13:58well you question
01:14:00Deontay Wilder's power
01:14:02the proof is in the banana pudding
01:14:04as he just turned the lights out
01:14:06on Archer Spilka
01:14:08with his 35th knockout
01:14:10winning
01:14:12his debut here in the Big Apple
01:14:26immediate medical attention to
01:14:30Archer Spilka
01:14:34in a
01:14:38matchup came from the side
01:14:40you might have hit him behind the ear
01:14:46alright
01:14:48you got to go back to your seat
01:14:50man, it's alright
01:14:56he has to listen to us
01:14:58he can't be distracted
01:15:04There's Andrej Spilka, a monster KO in Wilder's Big Apple debut.
01:15:17During a round in which Spilka had actually done some good work, he would get nailed here with a right hand.
01:15:26He was throwing his own left hand and that's what you face when you face Wilder
01:15:32because at any moment that power can get you in the right hand.
01:15:35It's a very powerful punch and made more powerful by Spilka walking into it, adding to the power of the punch.
01:15:43He was on the chin from the other side, it looked like behind the ear, but he shot right on the chin.
01:15:48Well timed by Wilder.
01:15:51When Spilka would come in looking for that overhand left, he came in a little bit wild.
01:15:57The left hand very wide for Spilka and he was hit with the right.
01:16:01Now, he had taken right hands before in this fight and not been hurt, but that one was different because he was coming in and he was hit flush.
01:16:08Exactly, he walked right into it and then Deontay kind of stuck out his left hand first to measure with it, make sure he had the proper distance for that punch.
01:16:15And he is saying, I told you I was going to get it done.
01:16:18Deontay Wilder, a big man with a big personality.
01:16:24Let's go to Jim Gray.
01:16:27Alright, I've just spoken to Dr. Jeff Kaplan and he is being administered also by Dr. Barry Jordan.
01:16:33They are taking him out on a stretcher, they have immobilized his neck.
01:16:36He is talking, he is moving all extremities.
01:16:39He will be taken now as a precautionary and have tests run, what I'm told by Dr. Kaplan, to Lutheran Hospital.
01:16:49When I asked Dr. Kaplan the condition and if he is alright, he said yes, I think he will be okay.
01:16:55That's all we have right now Mauro, more information coming.
01:16:58Thank you very much and good to hear from an initial report as we look at the show stats for this heavyweight title fight that came to a crushing close in the night.
01:17:07Well, they demonstrate the fact that this was not some fight that was completely out of hand for Arthur Shpilska, but still at the end, power made the difference.
01:17:16Let's go to Jimmy Lennon Jr. to make it official.
01:17:24Ladies and gentlemen, we have the time, 2 minutes 24 seconds in round number 9.
01:17:31He is the winner by way of knockout, he is still undefeated and still the WBC heavyweight champion of the world, the bronze bomber, Deontay Wilder.
01:18:02Alright Mauro, thank you very much.
01:18:05Let's start first right here with Ronnie Shields.
01:18:08Ronnie, please tell us the condition of Arthur.
01:18:12He's doing good, he's awake, he knows exactly where he is right now.
01:18:16He didn't want to go to the hospital, but as a precaution, the best thing for him to go get checked out.
01:18:22Are all of his extremities moving and is he conscious and talking to you?
01:18:25Yes, he was conscious, he was talking, he's good.
01:18:28This is all just to be checked out and make sure that there's no precautionary diseases and it's just to be checked out further?
01:18:34It's better safe than sorry.
01:18:36Ronnie, we thank you for your time.
01:18:38Ronnie Shields, trainer.
01:18:40Deontay, congratulations.
01:18:43I know you went over and expressed your concern.
01:18:46What did you say?
01:18:48I know you expressed your concern to Arthur, what did you say to him?
01:18:51I told him that he was a great contender, that the Polish people have nothing to be sad about.
01:18:56He was a true contender.
01:18:57He came and gave his all and he gave a great fight for Brooklyn and ending the spree 115 years, man.
01:19:04So thank you, Arthur Spuka, for your competitiveness, baby.
01:19:09And we see tonight what can happen when you run into a clean shot like you hit him with.
01:19:16On your end, and you're showing concern, on your end, it's part of the game, but obviously you don't want to see a guy get damaged and hurt.
01:19:24You know, I always say two prayers.
01:19:26I say a team prayer and I say an individual prayer.
01:19:29In my individual prayer, I always like, I don't want to hurt the next man so he can't go back to his family.
01:19:33You know, people don't understand and don't give these fighters enough credit.
01:19:37They always say, this fighter's this or bomb this, but they got to understand, we risk our lives in here each and every time.
01:19:44And as you can see, man, we don't know.
01:19:46He may be all right now, but, you know, a couple of days on, you don't know what may happen.
01:19:51So he's definitely in my prayer and I hope he's doing well.
01:19:54And the good news is, as we're told by the doctor and by Ronnie Shields, is that he will be okay.
01:19:58Let's take a look at this final shot.
01:20:00You were kind of having trouble up until this point.
01:20:03He was giving you all kinds of fits, wasn't he?
01:20:05Most definitely.
01:20:06He was definitely a crafty guy.
01:20:08I haven't sparred or competed against a southpaw in three years.
01:20:12So, you know, he had the Polish people on his side that gave him the motivation and the will to do what he had to do.
01:20:18You know, he was a tough contender, but hey, you're fighting for a world title.
01:20:21Everybody's going to be tough.
01:20:22Everybody's going to say, I'm not going to stop until he's going to have to kill me.
01:20:26And so, you know, he did a great job, man.
01:20:29And there you see that big right hand.
01:20:31You just saw the opening and took it.
01:20:33Surprised it took you nine rounds to find that opening?
01:20:35Most definitely.
01:20:36You know, like I said, he was more crafty and slick than we thought, you know.
01:20:40But it's boxing and we got 12 rounds, so I'm very patient, you know,
01:20:45when I'm looking forward to setting up with a punch and stuff like that.
01:20:48So, you know, they all can't be pretty.
01:20:50All right.
01:20:51Well, we have Tyson Fury right here.
01:20:53I know that you want to unify this championship as Tyson comes in right here.
01:20:57You guys have exchanged some tweets.
01:20:59Listen, there's only one Tyson Fury.
01:21:05Hold on a second.
01:21:07Hold on a second.
01:21:08Let's keep this civil here.
01:21:09Would you like to fight?
01:21:10We all know, Fury, you're just a phony, man.
01:21:13This is just for act.
01:21:14You know who I am.
01:21:15You know what time.
01:21:16You know what place.
01:21:17I ain't scared of nobody.
01:21:18I'll come to your backyard, baby, for that, my man.
01:21:20I promise you that.
01:21:21When you up in the ring with a real fighter, that's what it's all about, man.
01:21:27You know what I'm saying?
01:21:29Listen, any time, any place, anywhere, I'll fight you in your backyard.
01:21:34Like a dumb clitch, though.
01:21:35I'll beat you, you bum.
01:21:36You're a bum.
01:21:45Well, that might not have been a good idea.
01:21:48You know, we already know this is just an act, baby.
01:21:52You're not a real fighter.
01:21:53This is an act.
01:21:54I don't play this.
01:21:56You should be an actor.
01:21:58But when we do step in this ring, this ain't wrestling.
01:22:00This ain't the WWE, baby.
01:22:02When you do step in this ring with me, if you do, because this could have been done
01:22:06a long time ago, you can run around like you're a preacher and all that you want,
01:22:10but, baby, I promise you, when you step in this ring, I will baptize you.
01:22:17I guess it didn't take long for this promotion to start.
01:22:21Tyson, Tyson, will it be Povetkin, Charles Martin, or this man running around the ring
01:22:28right here next?
01:22:30I would love to have him next, but unfortunately, I got other mandatory dues I have to handle
01:22:35first, and when he get finished with what he doing on his side, he know where to find me.
01:22:41I've been here all along.
01:22:43He can play around all he want.
01:22:45He know how to find me.
01:22:46He know when to find me.
01:22:47Make the date.
01:22:48Make the date, Tyson.
01:22:49Make the date, and we're there, baby.
01:22:51I promise you.
01:22:52Make the date.
01:22:53Bomb Squad!
01:22:57All right.
01:23:00Deontay, congratulations.
01:23:02Let's go back tomorrow.
01:23:04All right, gentlemen.
01:23:05Thank you very much.
01:23:06What a way to kick off the 30th anniversary of Showtime Championship Boxing.
01:23:10Welcome to 2016 as we look at the official scores at the time of the stoppage.
01:23:18And all three judges had it for Deontay Wilder, who put an exclamation point on the proceedings,
01:23:25and Deontay Wilder retains his title.
01:23:28Our unofficial scorer had it for Wilder as well, Steve Farhood, at the time of the stoppage,
01:23:34but man, you talk about a promotion getting started prematurely, and the fans really giving
01:23:40it to Tyson Fury.
01:23:42We already know that he has signed a rematch with Vladimir Klitschko.
01:23:45Deontay Wilder seemingly winning over the crowd here in Brooklyn, but man, cannot get over
01:23:51what a night it's been.
01:23:52Let's go back to Brian Custer.
01:23:54And you know what?
01:23:55As you take a look at this, Tyson Fury still doing his act in the ring.
01:23:58I don't think it's a coincidence we've got the voice of the WWE moreover now, and we've
01:24:03got some WWE antics going on in the ring right now.
01:24:06Look at him.
01:24:07Look at Fury.
01:24:08He's up on the corner.
01:24:10Deontay Wilder told us at our fighter meeting that his next opponent would probably be
01:24:14Alexander Povetkin, but he would certainly like to unify all of the belts by the end
01:24:21of the year.
01:24:23Let's recap our night of boxing here from Brooklyn.
01:24:25We started with the vacant IVF heavyweight title on the line.
01:24:29Charles Martin, Czar, Glasgow.
01:24:31This one's in the third round.
01:24:32You know, Glasgow hurt his knee when he slipped, and then later in that third round, it happened
01:24:38again.
01:24:39You heard the doctors basically tell our Jim Gray hurt his ACL.
01:24:44He could not continue.
01:24:46Watch his knee here, that right knee.
01:24:48Oh, just buckles there.
01:24:51Hurt his ACL, could not continue.
01:24:53Charles Martin now the new IVF heavyweight champion.
01:24:57The main event, Deontay Wilder making his third defense of the WBC heavyweight title.
01:25:03He landed with the right hand, but it was in the ninth round.
01:25:07In the ninth round, you want to talk about a devastating right hand, right there.
01:25:11And that one put Artur Spilka out.
01:25:15And Deontay Wilder retained his WBC heavyweight title.
01:25:21Now, for Al Bernstein, Mauro Ranallo, Paulie Malignaggi, Steve Farhood, Jim Gray, and our
01:25:28entire Showtime sports crew, I'm Brian Custer.
01:25:31Good night from Brooklyn.
01:25:37Good night.
01:26:07Good night.
01:26:37Good night.
01:27:07Good night.
