00:00Born in Holland, Ruud van Nistelrooy has played for five top sides in his career, but has
00:23taken part in the World Cup only once.
00:32Ruud van Nistelrooy has been stunning football crowds since his debut for Dutch club Den
00:36Bosch in 1993.
00:39His long and illustrious career as a striker has seen him go on to play for such A-list
00:43teams as Manchester United and Real Madrid.
00:50He was born on the 1st of July 1976 in Oss, North Barbent, in the Southern Netherlands,
00:57which boasts a population of over 75,000 people.
01:02His first club, Den Bosch, had started back up in 1965 in the lowest professional league
01:08in the Netherlands.
01:11After finishing top of the table in their first season, they were immediately promoted
01:15to the second division.
01:18They've remained there ever since, apart from during one spectacular purple patch in
01:22the 1980s.
01:25Boasting their strongest team ever, they enjoyed seven straight seasons in the Eredivisie from
01:301983 to 1990, finishing as high as sixth place.
01:36While Ruud van Nistelrooy was at the club, Den Bosch never managed to repeat the feat.
01:42And after becoming the club's top scorer during the 1996-97 season, Ruud was transferred to
01:47Heerenveen, earning the opportunity to play in the Eredivisie.
01:52His impact was immediate.
01:54The club reached the semi-finals of the Dutch Cup that year, while Ruud scored 13 goals
01:59in 31 matches, and was transferred to PSV Eindhoven the very next season.
02:05At PSV, he really showed off his talent.
02:08In his first season, he scored 31 goals in 34 matches, and won the Dutch Player of the
02:13Year award.
02:19After two strong seasons at PSV, the star striker was signed to Premier League giant
02:24Manchester United in April 2001, almost a year after suffering a major knee injury.
02:31As you will be aware, Ruud van Nistelrooy has had a knee injury, and has not played
02:35for the last six to eight weeks.
02:38A key focus of our test today has been on the injured knee, and we have been unable
02:43to complete all the necessary tests to our satisfaction today.
02:48We will continue to conduct the tests over the course of the next few days, in cooperation
02:52with PSV Eindhoven, and will communicate the position as soon as possible.
02:57I am pleased to inform you that we have concluded negotiations with both PSV and Ruud, and we
03:03will complete the transfer as soon as the tests have been satisfactorily concluded.
03:07The original injury, which he had sustained during a friendly against Silkeborg, had caused
03:12Ruud to fail medical tests to move to Manchester United.
03:16After making his comeback for PSV in March 2001, he was signed by Man U, twelve months
03:22after the original deal had fallen through.
03:25Fantastic.
03:26Of course, last year was close, and it was a big disappointment that it didn't come
03:31through.
03:32But now, after a hard time fighting to come back, and my comeback was really nice, and
03:39it's just the best that happened to me.
03:41Manchester United paid a British record of around €22 million, over €500,000 more
03:48than the original deal broken in 2000.
03:52I hope I'm worth it.
03:53I have to prove it.
03:54I want to become a better player, and I want to show my qualities at Manchester.
04:02If you're worth it, we will see that, but I don't think in amounts, I think in quality
04:09and playing good games and scoring goals.
04:11So that's what I'm trying to do next year.
04:15He didn't take long to settle into his new club, scoring 23 goals in his first season.
04:22During his second season, he was even more impressive, making defenders tremble with
04:27his incredible diverse arsenal of goalscoring skills.
04:32His talent earned him an amazing goal percentage of 73 per cent in his first season, and a
04:37whopping 84 per cent in his second season.
04:40Well, I hope I have a chance to play in the UK.
04:45The percentage of scoring is incredible.
04:49But others will do that, I mean, it will come, there's no question about that, because they
04:57are scorers.
04:58Rude's star flourished at Man U.
05:00His only blemish was an injury-interrupted 0-4-0-5 season.
05:04Despite this, Rude built a reputation few could match.
05:08During his time at Manchester United, he kept the fans in raptures, helping the club to
05:12four titles, including the Premier League Championship, the FA Cup, the Football League
05:18Cup and the FA Community Shield.
05:20In the 0-5-0-6 season, manager Sir Alex Ferguson left Rude on the bench for six consecutive
05:26league matches.
05:27His exclusion had allegedly come after an argument with Cristiano Ronaldo, in which
05:32Rude claimed Ronaldo was reluctant to pass the ball.
05:35In 2006, soon after expressing his desire to leave Manchester United, he signed with
05:40Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid for 24 million euros.
05:46It's a great honour to stand here in Bernabeu.
05:49It's a dream come true.
05:52Real Madrid is a fantastic club.
05:54It's got everything, history, the greatest players ever have played here, so it's a great
06:00honour on my side.
06:03During his controversial last season with Man U, details of the argument with Cristiano
06:07Ronaldo were released.
06:09Rude's claims that Ronaldo tended to hold onto the ball rather than pass, ended with
06:13the striker allegedly telling Ronaldo to go crying to your daddy.
06:18After departing from the club, Rude spoke openly about leaving Old Trafford.
06:23The relationship with the manager was ended and that was painful because I owe him a lot.
06:37He waited for me during my injury, he gave me the chances and the confidence to play
06:44the best level I've ever played at the greatest club like Manchester United.
06:51And then, whatever happened, happened, but that good relationship came to an end.
06:59Despite the unhappy ending, Rude insisted that the club and its fans would remain in
07:03his heart.
07:05My affection and appreciation towards the fans and Manchester United as a club and everyone
07:11who works at the club will be forever, it's part of me.
07:16I've been there for five years, they were the most incredible years and that's what
07:20I'll carry with me for the rest of my life and the feeling that the fans gave me from
07:25minute one, they embraced me and they never let go really.
07:37His move to Real Madrid didn't dampen his appetite for scoring goals and he kicked off
07:42in a blaze of goal scoring glory.
07:45In just his second league match, he scored a hat-trick against Levante and on the 12th
07:50of November 2006, he scored all four of Madrid's goals in their 4-1 victory over Osasuna.
07:57He also equaled the longest consecutive scoring streak in La Liga history with seven straight
08:02matches.
08:03Not surprisingly, he finished the season as the top scorer.
08:06Real Madrid felt his influence, which helped them take home the 2006-2007 league title.
08:15The prize recruit underwent ankle surgery in March 2008 and, after returning in May,
08:20still managed an enviable 20 goals for the 07-08 season.
08:27His third season with the club, however, was plagued with injury.
08:30It was announced in November 2008 that he would miss the rest of the season.
08:35The problem was a partially torn meniscus in his right knee, with an expected recovery
08:39time of six to nine months following a second operation.
08:45Real deregistered Van Nistelrooy following the injury.
08:48He was out of action until the final pre-season game before the start of the 2009-2010 season.
08:56Despite scoring a goal in his first La Liga match after the injury, he picked up a thigh
09:01injury during the strike.
09:05He was sidelined for another lengthy period before making his comeback on October 27 against
09:10Alcocon in the Cochabamba del Rey.
09:14So far in his career, Ruud Van Nistelrooy has scored over 300 goals in all forms of
09:19competition.
09:20His best return came in his second season at Manchester United, scoring 44 goals in
09:25total for the year.
09:33Ruud Van Nistelrooy has so far earned 64 caps for the Netherlands and 33 goals.
09:39Although he debuted for his first national team in 1998, he had to wait until Euro 2004
09:45to play in his first international tournament.
09:49He managed to score in all three group stage matches, guiding the Netherlands to the semi-finals
09:54of the tournament, where they were defeated by Portugal.
09:57His scoring proficiency gave the Dutch fans plenty to cheer about.
10:02Setting out to score as many goals as possible, even he was surprised at how often he found
10:06the back of the net.
10:08My next challenge is to keep going the way I'm going and that's a big challenge for me
10:13because I didn't expect to go like this after two and a half years of scoring 100 goals.
10:22Before his captivating performance at Euro 2004, Ruud and his Dutch teammates were gearing
10:28up for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, one of the biggest events on the sporting calendar.
10:35It was his first opportunity to play in a World Cup.
10:39However, a crucial loss to Portugal in the qualifying stages put them on the back foot.
10:46When they faced off against the Republic of Ireland in a must-win match, their worst fears
10:51were realised.
10:53They were eliminated from the tournament, but Ruud remained gracious in defeat.
10:58I think we have to be humble enough to other teams, you know, we have to respect our position.
11:06We want to do well in every game we play and see if we can prove it, but for us it's not
11:11in a position to talk about winning it or anything.
11:16With the failed 2002 World Cup attempt well behind them, the Netherlands focused on qualifying
11:21for the 2006 World Cup, to be held in Germany.
11:25With the host nation qualifying automatically, that left 51 teams to compete for 13 places
11:30in the European quota.
11:33The Netherlands landed in Group 1.
11:36Their opponents in Group 1 included the Czech Republic, Romania, Finland, Macedonia, Armenia
11:42and Andorra.
11:45The Dutch team performed strongly in all of their group matches.
11:49With a top-placed team to qualify, it looked like the long wait since their last World
11:53Cup appearance in 1998 could soon be over.
11:58The only blot on the landscape for Ruud was a yellow card in a match against bottom-placed
12:02Andorra.
12:06He was provoked by Andorra's Antony Leema, who laughed at him for missing a penalty.
12:11When Ruud scored six minutes later, he went to Leema and celebrated the goal in front
12:15of him.
12:16The Netherlands went on to win the match 4-0.
12:21The Netherlands managed to sail through the group qualification undefeated.
12:25They won 10 matches and drew twice, with both ties coming against Macedonia.
12:32Ruud scored seven goals during the qualifying stage.
12:36The Czech Republic finished the group in second place and also qualified for the Cup by winning
12:41a play-off match.
12:44Romania finished close behind the Czech Republic.
12:48After the crushing disappointment of 2002, the Dutch striker was relieved to have gotten
12:52through the qualifying stage.
12:55Very confident and very positive as well.
12:59I think big teams always show how they really are by showing how you react from disappointment.
13:10And I think we want to do and we want to show what we can do because we didn't go to the
13:16World Cup and we were very disappointed about that.
13:19Now we want to show what we can do and we're very motivated about it.
13:24And also very positive that we can make.
13:27The good news sent the Dutch fans into a jubilant frenzy.
13:31On October 8, 2005, after eight long years of waiting in the wings, they finally had
13:37cause for celebration as their team officially qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
13:44The wait had been just as long for Ruud van Nistelrooy, who could now look forward to
13:48competing in his first World Cup.
13:52After strong performances in the qualifying stages, expectations were high for him and
13:57the rest of his team.
13:58The fans were beside themselves.
14:00Extremely jumpy, can't be better.
14:03This is so cool, I can't believe it.
14:06We're through, we're just through.
14:09The Netherlands landed in Group C. The group included Argentina, along with the Ivory Coast
14:14and Serbia and Montenegro.
14:17Ruud started in all of the group stage matches, but only managed one goal, which came against
14:21the Ivory Coast.
14:23He was benched for their final match against Portugal, where they were eliminated.
14:28Euro 2004 remains the Netherlands' best result in a major tournament during van Nistelrooy's
14:33tenure in the side.
14:35As well as making his best international performance to date, Ruud's great form during Euro 2004
14:41spurred his World Cup hopes.
14:44The atmosphere is great, we are very positive, we have a good team spirit and we're preparing
14:50ourselves for the Germany game.
14:53Physically we are getting stronger and stronger and it's a very big opening game, Holland
15:01against Germany, but it's always great to play in big games.
15:06Dutch coach Marco van Basten asked Ruud to replace the injured Klaas-Jan Huntelaar on
15:12the roster for the Euro 2008 qualifiers.
15:15However, Ruud turned down the offer and in January 2007 announced his retirement from
15:20international football.
15:22Four months later, Ruud returned to the squad and helped them qualify for Euro 2008.
15:28They drew a tough group, but despite having to face Italy, Romania and France, the Dutch
15:33fans remained optimistic.
15:36Good weather, nice girls, great game, we'll be world champions.
15:45I predicted 2-0, the whole day we thought it would be 2-0 and it came out as 3-0.
15:53It's incredible, really incredible.
15:58The Netherlands dominated their group in Euro 2008, winning all three of their matches.
16:04Holland scored during their 3-0 group stage victory over Italy and also scored the equaliser
16:09in their eventual 3-1 loss to the Russians in the quarter-finals.
16:14On the 4th of August 2008, Ruud van Nistelrooy again announced his retirement from international
16:19football and a brilliant career came to a close.
16:27While playing for the Netherlands, Ruud van Nistelrooy has been associated with some tremendous
16:31players.
16:33Among these are Robin van Persie, Patrick Kluivert, Edwin van der Sar, Arjen Robben,
16:39Edgar Davids and Marco van Basten.
16:43Fellow Dutch striker Robin van Persie excites crowds with his stealth-like goal-kicking
16:47and great vision.
16:49After making his mark with hometown club Feyenoord from 2001 and 2004, where he won the 2002
16:56UEFA Cup, van Persie was transferred to Premier League club Arsenal.
17:01In his first season with the Gunners, he won the FA Community Shield and the FA Cup.
17:06He made his senior international debut in 2005, lining up alongside Ruud for the Netherlands
17:11at the 2006 World Cup and Euro 2008.
17:16Patrick Kluivert shares the same birthday as Ruud, the 1st of July 1976, and the similarities
17:22don't end there.
17:24A striker himself, Kluivert is the all-time leading goalscorer for the Dutch team.
17:30He found the back of the net 40 times during his 10-year career with the national team
17:34from 1994.
17:37In 2004, along with Ruud, he was named in Pelé's FIFA 100, a list of the 125 greatest
17:45living footballers as part of FIFA's centenary celebrations.
17:50Kluivert is currently pursuing a new career in coaching.
17:55Veteran goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar is pushing 40, but that hasn't stopped the Dutch star
18:00from continuing to play the sport he loves at English club Manchester United.
18:04Up until his retirement from international football in 2008, he was a role model for
18:09all Dutch players, and remains his country's most capped player of all time.
18:15His career began in 1990 for Dutch club Ajax, before moving on to Juventus, Fulham and finally
18:22Manchester United.
18:24He was named best European goalkeeper in 1995.
18:29Incredibly, he won the honour again 14 years later in 2009.
18:34Talented 25-year-old winger forward Arjen Robben was not only a national team-mate of
18:39Ruud van Nistelrooy's, he also played with him at Real Madrid from 2007 to 2009.
18:46He joined van Nistelrooy at Euro 2004, the 2006 World Cup and Euro 2008.
18:53He's also a former member of PSV Eindhoven.
18:57Like Ruud, he left to sign with the Premier League club, while at Chelsea he won two Premier
19:03League titles.
19:05Robben has made 45 appearances for the national team, and showed great form in the 2006 World
19:12Cup finals, where he won the Man of the Match award in two separate games against Serbia
19:17and Montenegro and then the Ivory Coast.
19:21Edgar Davids has been a vital part of the Dutch team for 10 years, making 74 national
19:27appearances from 1994 to 2005.
19:32The defensive midfielder was a big influence in the 1998 World Cup finals in France, where
19:37he scored the winning goal against FR Yugoslavia in the last minute of their second-round match.
19:45He went on to be named in the official FIFA team of the tournament.
19:48He was also named in the UEFA team of the tournament after Euro 2000, where the Netherlands
19:55reached the semi-finals before being knocked out by Italy.
20:00His international career ended in 2005.
20:04These days Marco van Basten is best known for his coaching success.
20:09He managed Ruud in the national team for four years.
20:13As a manager, he became known for his strong principles.
20:17Never afraid to drop a star player if he felt they were underperforming.
20:22Ruud found this out when he was dropped for the Netherlands' round of 16 match in the
20:262006 World Cup, a move for which van Basten was heavily criticised.
20:34As a player, he was regarded as one of the finest forwards of all time and was named
20:39FIFA World Player of the Year in 1992.
20:49The immense skill and talent of a player such as Ruud van Nistelrooy bring with them
20:53accolades and trophies.
20:57They also bring great wealth, in the form of millions of dollars played by clubs to
21:01retain his services.
21:04And by corporate sponsors, desperate to be endorsed by a champion.
21:10Current estimates put Ruud's total income at around 6.3 million euros.
21:17With so many sponsors willing to dig deep to put his name on their products, he must
21:21be doing something very right.
21:26Ruud van Nistelrooy's three major sponsors are Nike, Coca-Cola and Pringles.
21:31For his role with Nike, he took part in the Stand Up Speak Up Against Racism campaign.
21:35He is also featured in television ads for Coca-Cola and Pringles.
21:41Ruud's estimated annual earnings of 6.3 million euros add up to just over half of top earner
21:46Lionel Messi's income.
21:48Messi pulls in 12 million euros a year, followed by Cristiano Ronaldo, who earns 10.5 million
21:55euros.
21:56Alongside his football career, Ruud has started a family with his wife Leontyne Slats.
22:01So far they have two children, Moa and Liam.
22:04Whether little Liam will follow in his famous father's footsteps is yet to be seen.
22:10Ruud has earned close to 20 individual honours in his career.
22:14The prolific goal kicker has won a number of top scorer awards, including the Premier
22:19League top scorer in the 2002-2003 season.
22:24An honour that has previously gone to such star forwards as Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry
22:28and Michael Owen, he has been named the Champions League top scorer three times.
22:35Ruud's consistently stunning performances have also seen him win Dutch Player of the
22:39Year on two occasions, and take out the Barclay Card player in the same season that he was
22:46named the PFA Player of the Year.
22:51In a career spanning 16 years and counting, Ruud van Nistelrooy has gone from young upstart
22:55striker in the Dutch second division to world-renowned star footballer.
23:01With fans and admirers in every corner of the globe, his name will be revered for years
23:06to come.
