00:00Myola Water Treatment Works is here on the shores of Lough Neagh. It's abstracting the
00:12raw water from Lough Neagh and we're treating it. And we wanted to show people just how
00:17robust our treatment processes are. And when people see first hand all the treatment stages
00:23that goes into producing drinking water, they can take great comfort that the water at their
00:28taps and their houses is of really high quality and very safe to drink. I learned that I can
00:34have confidence in my tap water today. And that has been a great reassurance to me because
00:40the process that I witnessed today is very thorough and very securely monitored and it
00:49comes across as being very safe. It's mind blowing to think 19 million litres of water
00:54a day are going through this, what's referred to as a small treatment plant.
00:58Lovely to get a tour of the Myola Water Works plant here today. Really, really interesting.
01:04Lots of things I didn't know about and a really detailed experience of exactly how the whole
01:08water is processed and how it's made safe for consumers to drink at the end of the process.
01:14I had no idea what goes into the process of treating water. Really, really didn't. And
01:18this now has just added to that knowledge. What I found really surprising was the amount
01:27of electricity used. I really had no idea at all and in the current situation we're
01:33all in, that was quite staggering to me. My favourite part was meeting some of the people
01:38in the background and sharing that we all have clean drinking water, the water scientists
01:42and talking through the various different process and making sure that water's of a
01:47high quality before it gets to our taps. It's a multi-stage process and that means there's
01:52layer after layer after layer of safety and I think that's very encouraging. As somebody
01:59who works in the food and drink sector, that's something that we understand very well. Layers
02:04of safety, layers of controls and that those controls are professionally operated and maintained.
02:11So very pleased to be at Water Treatment Works here in Myola. As a public health agency,
02:17we work really closely with Northern Ireland Water colleagues to protect the public health
02:24and to reassure the population of Northern Ireland on a daily basis. We're very confident
02:29about the high quality of water that is supplied to the population here in Northern Ireland.
02:36I think the most important thing for me about this tour today and in terms of helpfulness
02:40was the reassurance that I got in terms of the processes the water goes through to ensure
02:47the quality of the water that we're drinking. And of course there was a lot of concern last
02:51year about the drinking water because of the conditions around the log and a lot of questions
02:56being asked and I suppose we're all very ignorant to what does go on. So I found this very very
03:02reassuring today and I feel confident drinking water from the tap.
