00:00Prenups, they can often spark these sort of intense debates in personal relationships,
00:05as we've seen recently on Love is Blind UK from Netflix. Why do you think this is a topic
00:10that does remain so polarising?
00:12Well, I think prenups are still a concept that's relatively new to the UK, and I think
00:19we're all starting to get to grips with them as a concept. They have a sort of an image
00:25of being used only by the rich and the famous, and that really isn't the reality of my day-to-day
00:32role at all. I see a lot more people coming in and enquiring about prenups, and we've
00:38been drafting those for a number of years now.
00:42Viewers were slightly divided, I suppose we saw online a bit of controversy there about
00:47Catherine's reaction to Freddie's suggestion to get a prenup. From your professional perspective,
00:54what do you think contributed to her reaction, and why might some people react strongly against
00:59the idea?
01:00Well, people seem, I mean, they see them as very unromantic, don't they? And they see
01:06them as something that perhaps undermines the strength of the relationship. Really,
01:12the concept of a prenup is very much about trying to de-risk a process. People would
01:18think nothing about getting holiday insurance. Obviously, we've all got to have car insurance.
01:25But if you can view it in that sort of way, as an insurance policy, they're intended really
01:30to make sure that in the event a relationship does fail, there is fairness.
01:36Many people associate prenups with distrust or a lack of confidence in the relationship.
01:41How can couples sort of approach that conversation in a way that fosters mutual respect?
01:47Respect will only ever be upheld in this country if it provides for a fair outcome.
01:51So it's that element of fairness that I think is important. That's a really important starting
01:56point when raising the discussion.
