00:00:30In one of my favorite scenes of the 1964 Disney classic Mary Poppins,
00:00:36Mrs. Banks throws open the door to her home, proudly clad in a sash for women's votes.
00:00:42As she sings of the work she has done to secure votes for English women,
00:00:46she uses her soft, fluttery voice to produce a song that exudes strength.
00:00:52She does not need to shout. She is powerfully feminine.
00:00:58And girls state, so are we.
00:01:02We, as women, are often taught that, in order to have our voices heard,
00:01:06we must appear and speak and debate like men.
00:01:11We must be strong and overpowering and demand attention.
00:01:15In reality, nothing could be further from the truth.
00:01:20The truth is that femininity is powerful.
00:01:24♪♪
00:01:47There were so many people. I thought it was going to be like one-on-one, but okay.
00:01:50Would you like to tell us just a little bit about yourself, please?
00:01:55♪♪
00:02:10In 2040, I intend to run for president, so I think I'm going to run for governor at Girls State.
00:02:15I want to, like, be liked at Girls State for me and not because I want to get elected.
00:02:20♪♪
00:02:30I am a leader. I am an athlete, a musician, an actress, an intellectual.
00:02:34Next, I want to be president of the English Honor Society.
00:02:38Sorry, sorry. I don't know anything about myself.
00:02:42♪♪
00:02:52I'm really passionate about politics, specifically, and it's what I want to do in my eventual career.
00:02:58I'm super passionate about public health.
00:03:00I do believe that there should be increased accountability for individuals who own firearms.
00:03:04It looks like abortion may be banned, and I think, pro-life, pro-choice,
00:03:08everyone can agree that abortion being banned will increase maternal mortality rate.
00:03:13Thank you. Thank you, guys.
00:03:14♪♪
00:03:19Okay.
00:03:21♪♪
00:03:45Someone's on my tweet.
00:03:47All right, stop.
00:03:48Celebrate and listen.
00:03:49Nice track is a brand new invention.
00:03:51Something got ahold of me tightly.
00:03:53Flows like a harpoon, daily and nightly.
00:03:55Well, it's time to go.
00:03:57Good luck.
00:03:59♪♪
00:04:19Oh, there's people waving.
00:04:22Woo!
00:04:24That's exciting.
00:04:27♪♪
00:04:36Emily, I am going to take your picture.
00:04:38Perfect.
00:04:39You can stop smiling now.
00:04:40That's okay.
00:04:41Thank you.
00:04:42I have so much adrenaline that I woke up at 4.30 today and just read through the manual.
00:04:47Every election that I've put myself in at my school, I've won, like, since fourth grade.
00:04:53Do you want to go through our spirit tunnel?
00:04:54Yeah.
00:04:55I'm a student council, kind of known as that kid.
00:04:57Culture Club, Key Club, Environmental Sustainability, FCA, Student Council, Connect, Melville Media,
00:05:04Step Team, Lacrosse.
00:05:06I'm missing things.
00:05:07Did I say Science Club?
00:05:09Oh, and I started a Bible study at my school.
00:05:11There we go.
00:05:12So if you're a Federalist, Nationalist.
00:05:15Yay!
00:05:1640!
00:05:17That's my lucky number.
00:05:18Oh, my gosh.
00:05:19That's the year I'm running for president.
00:05:20Emily Worthmore, Worthmore for America 2040.
00:05:21I love it.
00:05:22Oh, my goodness.
00:05:23Thank you so much.
00:05:24My mom asked us our freshman year to pick your top three careers, and mine says President
00:05:27of the United States, Broadcast Journalist, Rock Star.
00:05:30I think I can do all three.
00:05:37People at my school don't know if I'm conservative or liberal, and I kind of like that.
00:05:43When people ask me what party I am, I don't want to say what I am and then have half the
00:05:47room stop listening before I even get a chance to speak.
00:05:51But I'm really hoping that coming out of Girl State, I'm going to be just openly, I'm conservative,
00:05:55like, let's talk about it.
00:06:00This is my patriotic shit, like, stuff.
00:06:02This is my patriotic stuff.
00:06:04Oh, I love that!
00:06:05Look, see?
00:06:06And then I have, like, a red headband, and I have, like, my pearls.
00:06:08Oh, I love, yes!
00:06:10And then I have, like, multiple kinds of pearl earrings, because I don't know, pearls feel
00:06:13like government?
00:06:16I feel like with political polarization right now, like, we all need to be just having discussions
00:06:19and I don't know where you stand politically.
00:06:21Um, I like Bernie Sanders, if that tells you anything.
00:06:23Okay, so we're going to be good friends.
00:06:25Yes.
00:06:26So we're good.
00:06:27I'm gay, so, like.
00:06:28I'm bi, but I have a boyfriend, so.
00:06:30That's, yeah, no, I respect it.
00:06:31Yeah.
00:06:32Very cool.
00:06:34I need to figure out how many things I can try for at once, and what happens if I get
00:06:39multiple Supreme Court elections.
00:06:41That'll be due tomorrow.
00:06:43Girl State's very much in my comfort zone of activities, like, it's talking, it's politics,
00:06:48there's a bit of school involved.
00:06:51Look, this looks very pretty, but it's not Girl State approved, is it?
00:06:55That you cannot wear it next week?
00:06:57Technically, these straps are three fingers long.
00:07:00But social skills have never been something I'm confident in.
00:07:07Wish me luck, Bruiser.
00:07:08This is my first class as a serious law student.
00:07:12I told my friends I've never seen Legally Blonde, and everyone was immediately scandalized.
00:07:19That is the whitest person I've ever seen.
00:07:22Legally Blonde is a nice way to get into that mindset of social skills, having fun with
00:07:28things.
00:07:31I tend to be overly serious, but I guess I'll just figure it out when I get there.
00:07:37Yes.
00:07:38I want to join the Snapchat group chat.
00:07:42Oh my gosh.
00:07:43Are you partying?
00:07:44I'm so excited to see how close we get by the end of the week.
00:07:48It's just like the first four hours.
00:07:50And we're already besties, like.
00:07:52Yeah, right.
00:07:54It was super nice getting off the bus, because we were with the Boy State guys, and they
00:07:58were just being boys.
00:08:00And it was kind of like, OK, when are we going to get to Legally Blonde?
00:08:04And then when we did, I was like, oh, I love this.
00:08:08I expect Girl State to be extremely empowering.
00:08:10Like, I'm hoping that other women want to see themselves in government.
00:08:16My dream scenario is Kumbaya, and we're all circling around the fire, holding hands and
00:08:20singing.
00:08:24I guess my nightmare, I guess, is that I don't want to go to school.
00:08:30I guess my nightmare at Girl State is to go into a space where I'm feeling like, hey,
00:08:36I don't belong here.
00:08:39Just some things that we do at Girl State, which big one is do not ever go by yourself
00:08:45anywhere.
00:08:47OK?
00:08:48We're not alone on this campus, so we should never be alone.
00:08:52We're also co-hosting with Missouri Boy State for the first time.
00:08:55I don't know if all of you know that.
00:08:57I really hope I don't need to have the talk about what is expected of you and the boys.
00:09:04Also, backs, we don't want them low cut.
00:09:07So if you do have cut out backs, be sure you do have something to cover up with as well.
00:09:14So your lanyards, if it's red, you're a fed.
00:09:17If it's blue, you're a nationalist.
00:09:22How many people do we have running for governor?
00:09:24Nobody.
00:09:25So where are the hands?
00:09:26All right, you're here.
00:09:56Hi.
00:09:57Nice to meet you.
00:09:58I'm Emily.
00:09:59What's your name?
00:10:00I'm Ali.
00:10:01Ali.
00:10:02Nice to meet you.
00:10:03Hi.
00:10:04What are your guys' names?
00:10:05Kylie.
00:10:06Kylie.
00:10:07Alyssa.
00:10:08Alyssa.
00:10:09Hailey.
00:10:10Hailey.
00:10:11Jolie.
00:10:12Jolie.
00:10:13Jolie.
00:10:14Jolie.
00:10:15Jolie.
00:10:16Nice to meet you.
00:10:17Jolie.
00:10:18Jolie.
00:10:19Jolie.
00:10:20Jolie.
00:10:21Jolie.
00:10:22Jolie.
00:10:23Jolie.
00:10:24Do you have an Irish?
00:10:25No.
00:10:26Thank you.
00:10:43All right.
00:10:44The party is going to continue because we are going to learn the Girl State song.
00:10:50Yeah, we are.
00:10:51Yeah, we are.
00:10:52Yeah, we are.
00:10:54We are future builders, builders in a bend.
00:11:03And tomorrow girls' day, the best day in the land.
00:11:10Rah, rah, rah!
00:11:11We are overcoming the rest in our hands.
00:11:16Don't think about this as sexism.
00:11:18If good boys are happy.
00:11:19And tomorrow girls' day, we proudly sing our song.
00:11:26Yeah!
00:11:27Woo!
00:11:31Look at the moon.
00:11:33This whole environment is like really intense.
00:11:39Everything is about building connections and who you know.
00:11:44Even like during cupcake making.
00:11:48There's a feeling in the air.
00:11:49There's something in the air.
00:11:51And it's politics.
00:11:54I'm looking for bipartisan support right now.
00:11:57And like I feel like you're, are you more liberal?
00:11:59I am.
00:12:00Yeah, I'm more conservative.
00:12:01But I'm running on like bipartisanship.
00:12:04So, I'm running for governor.
00:12:09Good morning!
00:12:12Look at all the people.
00:12:13Everybody's up so early.
00:12:14I love it.
00:12:17Meet me at the hotel room.
00:12:24It's too early.
00:12:26We got the hotel, hotel, holiday in!
00:12:30We got the hotel, hotel, holiday in!
00:12:34We got the hotel, hotel, holiday in!
00:12:38I keep wanting to say that it's more liberal girls at this camp than there are conservatives.
00:12:43But I can't tell.
00:12:44I can't tell for sure.
00:12:45I can tell the people who are definitely liberal.
00:12:47Like definitely.
00:12:49For sure.
00:12:50Just because, I don't know, maybe, maybe they're just louder.
00:12:54Are all of you filing for state office?
00:13:00Alright, come on in.
00:13:08How many people are going to run for governor?
00:13:10A lot.
00:13:11I don't know.
00:13:12How many people are going to run though and not know what they're doing?
00:13:14I'm worried that I'm going to look absolutely horrible when I give a speech.
00:13:17Just because I don't like talking to faces I don't know.
00:13:20I love public speaking.
00:13:21Yeah.
00:13:22Okay.
00:13:23Yeah.
00:13:24I like personal speaking.
00:13:25Yeah.
00:13:26Do you have speech and debate at your school?
00:13:28We do.
00:13:29I'm in journalism, so it's like...
00:13:30Right, you said that.
00:13:31I didn't know if you maybe did both.
00:13:33I'm a debate kid, so...
00:13:34It's fine.
00:13:35There's so many of you!
00:13:40Wow, there's a lot of people.
00:13:43The weatherman from my city.
00:13:45I know.
00:13:46I think it's going to come down to public speaking, and I'm really worried about that, but it's okay.
00:13:48Oh, it definitely will.
00:13:51When I was in Girl Scouts, we had superlatives, and I was voted most judgmental, which is hilarious, right?
00:13:58But it's just kind of a testament to my very aggressive personality.
00:14:02I've always been opinionated.
00:14:03I was never afraid to express any of my viewpoints, and that's put me between a rock and a hard place several times.
00:14:10But, I mean, I'm not going to change.
00:14:13That's how I am.
00:14:15My brother's argumentative in the exact same way that I am, and obviously as a woman, that's not really liked.
00:14:21Just by society as a whole, because you're not expected to be that way.
00:14:24You're expected to be a little more docile, a little more submissive.
00:14:28What are you guys running for?
00:14:30Governor.
00:14:31Awesome! Are you both from the same city?
00:14:33No.
00:14:34Friends?
00:14:35No.
00:14:36Acquaintances?
00:14:37Awesome! We'll become friends.
00:14:38Oh, yeah, obviously.
00:14:40Okay, so why governor?
00:14:43You know, I want to be in charge, so I'll have the most influence I can.
00:14:47I'm not really worried about being liked.
00:14:49What I'm worried about is to get people thinking about policies that I personally support.
00:14:54All right, we are open for filing.
00:15:06All right.
00:15:08I've got pictures for you if you want me to send them to you.
00:15:10Yes, please.
00:15:11All right.
00:15:24Attorney General?
00:15:25Yup.
00:15:28T-O-C-H-I.
00:15:31T-O-C-H-I.
00:15:38T-O-C-H-I.
00:15:40T-O-C-H-I.
00:15:41T-O-C-H-I.
00:15:42T-O-C-H-I.
00:15:43T-O-C-H-I.
00:16:04I'd like to try for Supreme Court justice, which luckily doesn't require an election.
00:16:11The Supreme Court gets to change things.
00:16:13Like, a lot of areas in government don't.
00:16:17Even the legislatures, because they have so many people to work with, it is so hard to genuinely change things.
00:16:25I'm not quite sure where I'm going.
00:16:30Thank you.
00:16:31Thank you.
00:16:33I'm an especially socially progressive person in a not-very-socially-progressive state.
00:16:39My perspective is very different from, like, the decent amount of Missouri that's rural, for example.
00:16:46So I'm a bit worried, especially with things like the recent, leaked, alleged Supreme Court abortion ruling.
00:16:55I think that's something that quite a few people will want to talk about.
00:16:59And for that reason, being on, like, the girls' state Supreme Court would be really special to me.
00:17:20My name's Nisha Marley. Here's my name tag.
00:17:25So, why do you want to be on the Supreme Court?
00:17:28I want to be on the Supreme Court because they make the decisions that, like, really affect people's lives.
00:17:34We're seeing that now with, like, abortion, gay rights, housing, the amount of money spent on a federal campaign.
00:17:40My parents are immigrants, so there's always been headlines or news and policies affecting our status in the country or political beliefs.
00:17:48I would love to judge anything with environmental law.
00:17:53We need to make a change now before it goes to future generations.
00:17:56I honestly like to listen rather than express my own views.
00:18:00I try not to be prejudiced. I'm impartial.
00:18:03My parents are divorced, so they, like, I have to, like, mediate between the two.
00:18:08Like, if there's a problem, I kind of have to be in the middle.
00:18:11Have any real-life court cases inspired you? How and why?
00:18:14So, I mean, the big one now, Johnny Depp, Amber Heard.
00:18:18Amber Heard.
00:18:19I did policy debate in the sophomore year, and I chose sentencing, and I talked a lot about mandatory minimum sentences,
00:18:25which are normally used on, like, nonviolent drug offenses, and they really restrict the court's power to be merciful.
00:18:33Thank you.
00:18:34Thank you.
00:18:50That one's a little bit more blurry.
00:18:52But it's okay.
00:18:53I'll take it. That's cute.
00:18:54All right.
00:18:55That's my girlfriend.
00:18:56Pretty.
00:18:57That's my best friend. She graduated.
00:18:59You can't tell behind the flip phone screen.
00:19:02It's good.
00:19:03Like, me and her are low-key, or I'm, like, not opposite sides of the political spectrum, but, like, honestly, I'm more conservative.
00:19:09Yeah.
00:19:10And she's, like, not, but it's good because it's, like, we don't let it get in the way.
00:19:15So I just want to put that out there before it's, like, a...
00:19:19I'm not going to dislike you because you're being a political beast.
00:19:25I would like to address you like I have addressed every class I have ever taught.
00:19:28May I do that, please?
00:19:29Yeah.
00:19:30Hey, girl, hey.
00:19:31Hey, girl, hey.
00:19:33One more time.
00:19:34Hey, girl, hey.
00:19:35Hey, girl, hey.
00:19:36That's what I was going for.
00:19:37Thank you.
00:19:41We all come from different places.
00:19:43We all have our own ideas about the world.
00:19:47But what we really need to focus on is us as women.
00:19:53Because although we are all different, we all have that in common.
00:19:57Right?
00:19:58We all have, in our own different ways, grown up in a world where we've never seen a female president.
00:20:07But how do we change that?
00:20:10We step up.
00:20:12Right?
00:20:14We want you to be the women who straighten other women's crowns,
00:20:19not the women who point out that they're crooked.
00:20:23All right.
00:20:24And I am here to announce the top 21 persons who will receive an interview for the Supreme Court today.
00:20:32All right.
00:20:33Katherine Zhao, Pershing City.
00:20:36Hannah Yohi Clark.
00:20:39Anne Chellis Clark.
00:20:41Nisha Murali, Harbor City.
00:20:44Heather Austin, Boone City.
00:20:47Ashley Queen, Brooke City.
00:20:50Brooke Zaler, Pershing.
00:20:52Madison Griffin Clark.
00:20:54And Ava Lawless from Lewis.
00:21:11All right.
00:21:14Oh my god, were you sure?
00:21:16This is amazing!
00:21:17It's right next door.
00:21:19Thank you so much.
00:21:22Yes!
00:21:24Okay.
00:21:25A lot of the hot-button topics that we think about in law come from the Supreme Court.
00:21:31Okay?
00:21:32Recently, you know, there was the leaked draft of Dobbs that would overturn Roe v. Wade.
00:21:39Was Roe v. Wade...
00:21:40I live in a small town.
00:21:42It's definitely way on the conservative side.
00:21:53All of my friends are majorly pro-life.
00:21:57It's been hard to express myself sometimes.
00:22:10Just because I'm coming from a small town doesn't mean that I'm going to be quiet about my beliefs
00:22:15or I don't know what's going on in the world.
00:22:19This is probably the most embarrassing blanket I could have brought.
00:22:23It's a picture of me and my boyfriend.
00:22:27My boyfriend, my family, everyone's like,
00:22:31you got to be competitive and be on the Supreme Court.
00:22:35You got to do it.
00:22:36You got to do it or you're going to get left in the dust.
00:22:39And I'm not one to be left in the dust.
00:22:42You got to do it or you're going to get left in the dust.
00:22:44And I'm not one to be left in the dust.
00:23:12Okay, you know what?
00:23:32Maybe I'm thinking no more double-sided signs.
00:23:38Hey, y'all.
00:23:39As you know, vote Toshi for Attorney General.
00:23:42Keep things truthful.
00:23:43Hey, y'all.
00:23:44Hi.
00:23:45Hi.
00:23:46My name's Toshi.
00:23:47I'm running for Attorney General.
00:23:48If you guys are interested in hearing any of my platforms, I'd love to share them with you.
00:23:52My main platform is The Truth.
00:23:53That's why I call myself Toshi Truth Ihekona.
00:23:56And as Attorney General, I would be able to litigate cases and actually take them to the Supreme Court.
00:24:02From the jump, just walking in, I already knew, like, it's going to be a lot of white people.
00:24:06Hey, y'all.
00:24:07These girls are literally from places where there's, like, 300 people in their town.
00:24:11So I'm probably the first black person they've ever interacted with.
00:24:13I just think that communication is important because we're never going to get the opportunity to talk to people from different parts of Missouri the way that we are right now.
00:24:21As far as, like, the white girls go, they've all been, like, super cool.
00:24:24Like, they haven't, like, I honestly have not experienced any microaggressions.
00:24:29Like, I probably have.
00:24:32I've been wanting to ask you, someone told me you speak Nigerian.
00:24:35I speak Igbo.
00:24:36Nigerian is a country.
00:24:38Isn't there a language in Nigerian?
00:24:40Yeah, it's Igbo.
00:24:41Oh, okay.
00:24:42Yeah, yeah, yeah.
00:24:43Is it weird if I ask you to say something?
00:24:45Yeah.
00:24:46Oh, it is.
00:24:51Oh my God, y'all are too funny.
00:24:53I try to find common ground and I try to, like, relate to them because at the end of the day, we're all high school teenage girls who, like, care about government and we can connect through that.
00:25:04Good morning, I'm on the ballot for governor.
00:25:09I'm here to, like, pitch you, look you.
00:25:11I'm trying to go around and get to know people.
00:25:13This picture will be the first thing that you see on that governor ballot and it's not a good picture, so please.
00:25:17This probably isn't a good picture either, but, like, it's probably slightly better than that.
00:25:21So, what do you believe, actually?
00:25:22I'm curious.
00:25:23It depends based on the specific, like, issue we're talking about.
00:25:28That's good.
00:25:29Don't box yourself in.
00:25:30I like that.
00:25:31I like that.
00:25:32I like listening to other people even though I am conservative and I feel like that's, like, a common misconception.
00:25:35I'm hoping for, like, a grassroots-style campaign because I really don't know how far a cardboard cutout is compared to having a conversation.
00:25:42I don't want to come off weird because, you know, you only have so much time and I do genuinely want to make these connections.
00:25:49But I'm also going around and, like, walking around and being like, hi, nice to meet you.
00:25:53What's your name?
00:25:54I feel like it's just a little too eager, maybe.
00:25:56You're running for governor?
00:25:57Yeah.
00:25:58I'm the first on the ballot.
00:25:59You guys know each other?
00:26:00Casually.
00:26:02I'm conservative.
00:26:03We are, too.
00:26:04Really?
00:26:05Yeah.
00:26:06I'm going to be honest.
00:26:07I don't really know what to talk about in my speech because our party as a whole has no platform yet.
00:26:11And I probably won't agree with the platform, to be honest.
00:26:13I'm looking around in this place.
00:26:15Like, I love it.
00:26:16Straightening each other's crowns, right, and all that.
00:26:18But the queen could have lost slay.
00:26:19Like, it's, like, great.
00:26:22Like, if I were a guy and you weren't, like, doing it mockingly, would you say that genuinely?
00:26:26Like, no.
00:26:27Like, you wouldn't.
00:26:28So I think it's, like, actually keeping us down more.
00:26:31Being conservative and being a young girl isn't a combination that you see a lot around here, I feel like.
00:26:39I love liberals.
00:26:40I love them to death.
00:26:41But it's a continuous effort to listen to people who disagree with me.
00:26:46I've yet to ever just flip a table and say, I'm done with this conversation.
00:26:50Maybe there will be a day when I do that.
00:26:52I love that.
00:27:12Some of my main, like, running points are, like, I love to bring the fun and the spirit back into these kinds of things.
00:27:18I'm going to be posting the results for this poll on my Instagram.
00:27:26I'm Cecilia Barden.
00:27:27I'm running to be your governor.
00:27:29I have many beliefs.
00:27:30I believe we should not have a dress code.
00:27:32This is a campaign to empower women.
00:27:34And last time I checked, women know how to dress themselves.
00:27:40I find campaigning to sometimes be really fake.
00:27:44And there's a lot of people who have come up to me and been like, I'm running for governor.
00:27:47My name is blank.
00:27:48Vote for me.
00:27:49And I'm like, that was a five second interaction.
00:27:52I don't even know.
00:27:53I'm not going to remember your name first off.
00:27:55And second off, why would I vote for you?
00:27:57Because you came up to me and told me your name.
00:27:59But I guess sometimes that works with other people, maybe.
00:28:02Do you want to follow me on Instagram?
00:28:03Do you have Instagram?
00:28:04You guys can just pass it around.
00:28:06There's tons of things I could talk about.
00:28:08And if you're following my Instagram, you'll kind of see, like, my campaign and my agenda.
00:28:11Firstly, environmental policy.
00:28:13So researching renewable energy sources is really important to me.
00:28:16I'm also interested in mental health care for military members.
00:28:21I used to be viscerally conservative.
00:28:24Some might call me alt-right.
00:28:26Because I was too baby, I was listening to people around me.
00:28:28And people around me were my family.
00:28:30So I was more conservative.
00:28:31I was more right-leaning.
00:28:33And then I kind of got older.
00:28:34And I was like, hmm, I don't know if I agree.
00:28:38And then it was just kind of a slow transition out of it.
00:28:44I talked to one girl.
00:28:46And we were talking about gun control in the campaigning class.
00:28:49And she was talking to me.
00:28:51She was like, yeah, because everyone at this point admits that our gun policy is bad.
00:28:55Like, kids are dying.
00:28:57There's guns in schools.
00:28:58Like, we need to change something.
00:29:00But it's just, like, the way it gets changed.
00:29:02So she was saying my bill, like, if she did Girls Nation, would be to arm teachers.
00:29:06I don't know.
00:29:07With that one specifically, I think that that would, like, arming teachers,
00:29:10it should be, like, a thing where they, like, have to go through a training course.
00:29:13See, what I have for my teachers, like, I think it's unfair to teachers.
00:29:16It should be national.
00:29:18And also, it's a constitutional right.
00:29:19Like, the Constitution is everything.
00:29:22Sorry, I got distracted.
00:29:23No, no, no.
00:29:24Like, I haven't had that many, like, political discussions with people.
00:29:26So I honestly love it.
00:29:27But there are some things I disagree with.
00:29:30I probably won't own an AR.
00:29:31But theoretically, I like the idea that I have the right to if I go through the proper precautions, right?
00:29:36I like that idea, right?
00:29:38I wake up in the middle of the night.
00:29:39Somebody's in my house.
00:29:40Somebody has a gun.
00:29:41I'm going to be shaking a lot.
00:29:43And you have a shot in the dark, right?
00:29:46It's aiming in the dark.
00:29:48Okay, an AR is going to be a lot more accurate.
00:29:50Like, I just, I don't see how it can protect your house without being more of a danger to your house.
00:29:54The only way it protects you if an intruder comes in, if it's laying around.
00:29:57Maybe raise your kids to understand that there's a don't touch,
00:30:00and you're going to put the lock on it when they're a baby.
00:30:02And pray to God, maybe lock your bedroom door while they're still young.
00:30:06And then when they're old enough, raise them right and make them understand this is a don't touch.
00:30:11I think we have a different view on the significance.
00:30:14But I think this is a good talk.
00:30:15No, no, no, I'm having fun.
00:30:16That's why I say we don't, like, it's fun.
00:30:17Nobody talks politics here.
00:30:19No, I wanted to talk politics.
00:30:21I'm having fun.
00:30:22I'm excited.
00:30:23Yeah, I live in St. Louis.
00:30:24It's kind of the liberalist you get in Missouri.
00:30:27So I knew if I ran for governor, like, through campaigning,
00:30:29I would be forced to, like, go out and talk to new people.
00:30:33That's why I came here.
00:30:34I wanted to meet, like, girls on the other side of the aisle.
00:30:39I think boys feel like they can speak louder about politics because I think women,
00:30:43often when we start talking politics, we get shut down.
00:30:47I think we're just less respected.
00:30:49So, you know, by the time we're 17, we're already socialized to stop talking about it.
00:30:54But we do have strong views about politics.
00:30:56♪♪
00:31:19Can I read my speech to you guys?
00:31:21Because she said that I can't do it during dinner when I have time.
00:31:25Okay.
00:31:26Hey, girls, I'm Angie Duzan.
00:31:28I'm running for House of Reps.
00:31:30I feel like I'm the best.
00:31:33Sorry.
00:31:34For this because I love people.
00:31:36I am a student council rep back at my school.
00:31:40I'm a people person.
00:31:42And I believe in giving everyone a voice.
00:31:44And I can't wait to get to know everyone
00:31:46and become best friends with all of you beautiful women.
00:31:49Woo!
00:31:52Like, politically, like, what are you thinking?
00:31:54What are your thoughts?
00:31:56Yeah.
00:31:57No, it's okay.
00:31:58Like, do you have a platform?
00:31:59Like, ideas?
00:32:01It's okay if you don't.
00:32:02Like, it's okay.
00:32:03Like, I'm not like, like, just me.
00:32:04Because it hasn't really been like that.
00:32:06So it's okay if you don't.
00:32:07Because Girl State isn't really like that.
00:32:08I'm just, like, throwing it out there just in case.
00:32:10Does it become political at any point?
00:32:12Well, I was talking to Vandana about it, and she was like,
00:32:14usually girls run on campaigns that are like environment, mental health,
00:32:18like stuff that honestly is typically pretty bipartisan.
00:32:21But, like, if you want to bring politics into it, I say go for it a thousand percent.
00:32:26Like, obviously you're going to have people that disagree with you, but.
00:32:29That's politics.
00:32:30Yeah.
00:32:31Yeah, I think it's interesting because, like, we're, like, talking about how, like,
00:32:33oh, the boys can have their shirts off and we can't.
00:32:34But, like, yeah, like, the boys are having, like.
00:32:36How is it?
00:32:37I wouldn't know because I haven't met them,
00:32:38but the boys are actually having political experiences right now.
00:32:41Yeah.
00:32:42Yeah, and I feel like.
00:32:43I'm a little sick of the fluff.
00:32:44Yeah.
00:32:45When does it get, like, mentally?
00:32:46Like, everybody says that they want to represent their people.
00:32:49Everybody says that they want to be friends with everyone and have everyone's voices heard.
00:32:52Okay, let's have a real conversation.
00:32:54And, like, get some stuff done.
00:32:55Like, what do you want to have done?
00:32:57What do you want to see?
00:32:58If we want a genuine experience on something, we have to talk about real world issues.
00:33:02And we have yet to do that in any aspect.
00:33:10I don't want to say that it's just a female thing,
00:33:13but maybe it's because everybody nowadays is told that we need to, like,
00:33:18really empower each other as girls, which is true.
00:33:21But a trap that we risk falling into with that is kind of perpetuating the idea that
00:33:28you're at a disadvantage because you're a woman.
00:33:33I was raised in a house where I was never told,
00:33:36you can't do this because you're a woman.
00:33:38Never had I ever heard that.
00:33:44Oh, I found another girl's governor page.
00:33:46She, like, is really campaigning.
00:34:14∂∂
00:34:41Oh, no.
00:34:42men why I'm just gonna start yelling like random conservative phrases at them
00:34:48see if they repeat it I know they will a little sheep
00:34:55are those the boys I want to go mm-hmm sorry chill only
00:35:08Oh
00:35:21they just like flex this one kid doesn't walk by flexing it was so bad that's
00:35:26embarrassed I know I think that that's are just weird I'm gonna I want to flex
00:35:31now I feel like now I want to play this game I can play this game you know it
00:35:37pisses me off what the fact that they have a Gemini don't I have yesterday's
00:35:43girls take newspaper we all know that boy states happening on campus okay the
00:35:52stories that you are writing are actually going to be printed in the same
00:35:56paper as the boy state paper and there are a lot of you in this room so I'm
00:36:01expecting a lot of really great stories
00:36:12we were walking by them we're asking them they were like oh no protection I
00:36:18get it they're trying to do the best for women
00:36:22the reason we're noticing all these differences between boys and girls say
00:36:26it's because they put us on the same campus they brought this problem on
00:36:28themselves okay this is just you have to be productive during this time you
00:36:39know you know I'm saying but you also have to get dressed for dinner as a
00:36:43side note you can take your cardigan off but as soon as we get to a building
00:36:47you'll need to put your cardigan or whatever you whatever your cover is back
00:36:50on you know the boys don't have a buddy system and all right you guys can talk
00:36:59about boy state now if you talk about government I just feel like the
00:37:07differences between voice dating girls state the counselors don't really want
00:37:11us to talk about because we're supposed to all be like incredibly in love with
00:37:15the program and we are ish I would love to go walk over to boy state right now
00:37:22and see what they're doing like I bet they're talking about things that are
00:37:27really important right now like I bet they're talking about Roe v. Wade being
00:37:30overturned I bet they're talking about Second Amendment I don't think they're
00:37:35talking talking about like crop tops this is the single most detailed and
00:37:40most specific bill on our docket today and yet still you've heard previous
00:37:44senators say that having a fine of only $50 makes the issue of discrimination
00:37:49seem not severe enough but I ask you what's the fine for discrimination now
00:37:52zero
00:38:14I have a screen recording of one of my friends is a boy state and it has like
00:38:35the listen to this that you know the guy I tell you this about ready yeah he's
00:38:39talking about like women's bodies and like fetuses it's really weird
00:38:43this is murder life begins at conception there's no alternative here I was a
00:38:49junior back when Roe v. Wade was passed or dictated by the United States Supreme
00:38:55Court I believe in pro-life no abortion no exceptions the Lord moves in
00:39:00mysterious ways we all have a soul and a right to live it to our fullest
00:39:09the boy side had a Republican and Democratic I can't remember it was
00:39:13representative or senator on stage and they were discussing abortion do they
00:39:18have uteruses no do we yeah so who actually gets to say here not them I am
00:39:25pro-life from natural conception on to death because that is the Catholic
00:39:28teaching personally I'm pro-life but I wouldn't try to convince somebody who's
00:39:32not otherwise like maybe I'd share my opinion and talk to them but I don't
00:39:35think it's something that's worth like no become pro-life you see your pro-life
00:39:39you need to assess what's after you need to create programs for after life which
00:39:44is another piece of it I got I don't think you can say you're pro-life and
00:39:47not like I think pro-life is its own problem out of statement a lot of pro
00:39:52lifers aren't actually pro-life they're pro-birth now that is a big
00:39:56difference women's restrictions on women's bodies we are taking steps back
00:40:00society we are taking steps back to society instead of moving forward with
00:40:05women's rights instead of moving forward with us having the right to do what we want with our
00:40:09bodies men are taking it away from us again it's oh it's y'all gonna get me to
00:40:15cussing
00:40:18okay everybody we just need to get rid of the anxiety so let's all hold hands
00:40:33just really quick we are all meant to be here for a reason right now we all
00:40:38deserve this but whoever gets it is amazing seven of us are gonna make it on
00:40:43that Supreme Court and I'm gonna be proud of each other okay the nerves are
00:40:49still here I'm pretty sure that Brooke and I began talking because I
00:40:54complimented like a braid in her hair that's really pretty and like beaded
00:40:58with red white and blue beads but after that we just kept talking because she's
00:41:02really nice and like genuinely cares a lot about government and so do I until
00:41:10now we didn't have to worry about any sort of competition one of us will be in
00:41:16the Supreme Court but there's no way for both of us to do it it's gonna be great
00:41:19either way yeah best Supreme Court ever right you actually know because the best
00:41:25record ever would have both of us on it mm-hmm
00:41:28it should came up and talked to me like and I was like okay this is this is this
00:41:35school you're cool you're a cool person you're so much different than me and I
00:41:38think that's great for both of us let's talk let's hang out and then we got put
00:41:43against each other but strong girls in power strong girls right this is
00:41:52intimidating I know right all right ready yeah awesome do you think the
00:41:57Constitution as it stands is the best possible basis for what will create the
00:42:03best quality of life for American citizens I think that with the
00:42:08amendments that have been made to it obviously it's just keeps getting well
00:42:15sometimes better sometimes things like overturning Roe v. Wade that's very
00:42:20controversial right now and it should be a topic that is more exclusive I think
00:42:25it should be just a women's conversation I think not a men's conversation I would
00:42:32add in a clause on discriminating on the basis of sexual or gender orientation
00:42:40are there any qualities that you possess that you believe make you stand out when
00:42:45it comes to your ability to objectively interpret the Constitution I think that
00:42:51it might not be the most formal way to hear other people's ideas but I am a
00:42:59very social person I will talk to a wall I've had a lot of practice separating my
00:43:05own opinions about political beliefs from fact and sometimes I had to have
00:43:13the team I disagree with win because they argued their case better they knew
00:43:17more and the fact that I've been doing that all year I believe makes gives me
00:43:24more knowledge on how to do that in a court system it was nice to talk to you
00:43:28finally I mean like so intimidated don't be very normal person yeah okay have a
00:43:34good night again that's your first one you have to choose one of the two okay
00:43:40awesome
00:43:54we are the future builders builders in a bend and we are from girl spain the best state in the world

00:47:01we all work very hard on the image of ourselves that we want to show to the world and it's exhausting
00:47:12i i want to say something about being christian in my speech like just a brief like i don't want to
00:47:15like drag on it but i definitely want to mention it because i feel like that's like part of my
00:47:19identity and i'm trying to be transparent because what if i did run on like more conservative like
00:47:22what if i just said it because honestly strategically speaking there are more liberal candidates that i'm
00:47:27like actually like feeling like threatened by and if they split the vote which i think they will
00:47:34like how many people would that like maybe comfort a little bit and like
00:47:37the best thing you can do is just be confident and do what you know these they say you can come
00:47:42here and be a new person but if you come here and you build yourself on a completely new identity
00:47:47you're lost so just stick to what you know
00:47:57my faith is one of the most important things about me christianity has definitely guided me
00:48:05i grew up in the church my dad was a pastor
00:48:11he passed away when i was younger
00:48:17it's just me and my mom she's a single mom she's always been there she sacrificed a lot for me
00:48:28being able to go for the scholarship would help me a lot financially wise this would just be a
00:48:33really really big thing for me that is currently the biggest stressor i have because college is a
00:48:39lot and i am paying for college 100 on my own just because of that like you know it's just not there
00:48:44for us can you expand on what you plan to do with your major yes i can so i'm interested in
00:48:50journalism that's what i want to major in in college because political journalism is my major
00:48:54curriculum i heard about the scholarship i really wanted to apply because this would be a huge thing
00:48:59for me so thank you so much for taking time listening
00:49:23everyone hypes up growth state is like this monumental moment that's going to change the
00:49:26way you view yourself and like the way you view others and i was kind of just like okay
00:49:30is it gonna happen like i haven't felt it yet
00:49:35but once we started debating and like talking about politics i thought this is where it all began
00:49:42you know i have a lot of ideas guys but does anybody else have ideas first
00:49:46so yeah let's get straight to it abortion whatever sorry if you want
00:49:49go for it okay i'm more on the pro-choice side of things i'm a christian so i am
00:49:56polite but i don't think that the government should be able to regulate a woman's body yes
00:50:06the house will come to order thank you madam speaker i move that delegates
00:50:09to be able to choose the preferred name and pronouns that goes on their id badges
00:50:14hi mommy
00:50:29girl i i did it i did it mommy i won the attorney general i know i know thank you
00:50:37thank you okay well i have to go please don't make me cry that's embarrassing
00:50:48thank you thank you i think about my parents a lot through this process i love you too
00:50:55my parents are immigrants that has definitely shaped me smiles right there beautiful family
00:51:03i know that my parents have fought to get to where they're at
00:51:06all right what's your dad they've had to struggle to be accepted
00:51:12so seeing people that look like me winning made me think of my parents because i did
00:51:18not expect people to be so receptive like i really did come into this like guard up
00:51:25so it was really cool to get that support but i am kind of waiting for another ball to drop
00:51:37presiding we are arguing that missouri's law that requires a woman who wants to have an
00:51:43abortion to receive counseling violates a woman's right to privacy because instead of sitting around
00:51:49being disappointed over losing i started associate circuit judge work helping other people prosecute
00:51:57planning cases judging doing the things that we like should work on here
00:52:10we think that fear is a main driving factor for abortion
00:52:13obviously things can happen like rape incest or it's endangering to the other it's all based on
00:52:18fear so we think that all women should go through counseling just to make sure that it's not
00:52:24something that they regret excuse me do you believe that the woman should be
00:52:29able to decide whether they would like this help i think forced counseling is kind of good
00:52:35in general like i mean obviously it's going to be hard for people to open up to doctors but
00:52:41ultimately they're just there to help why would it be such a big deal
00:52:44so
00:52:51i ruled in favor of amelia that requiring counseling before an abortion
00:52:57violated her right to privacy guess what i ruled on this morning
00:53:03oh wait abortion case it's being appealed the ruling i ran on it's a supreme court decision now
00:53:09everyone can come watch it okay okay do you have any idea about um
00:53:15like any ideas to help the roe v wade case right now because i'm sure every girl in this room knows
00:53:21the stake that it's at and it terrifies at least half of us yeah but then when we try to talk to
00:53:26the men about it it's like oh well that probably won't happen that seems a little absurd yeah
00:53:31that's what we need to talk about
00:53:39yeah i deserve to be here i deserve to be here um we are all qualified
00:53:51we are all amazingly talented we are all amazingly talented
00:53:56i can confidently speak in front of hundreds of girls
00:54:00i can confidently speak in front of hundreds of girls
00:54:04we're allowed to make mistakes we're allowed to make mistakes
00:54:25oh
00:54:37i have no clue what city you guys are i just wanted a good view of the stage
00:54:41i was the judge that made the original decision and i want to know what they're going to do with
00:54:45it oh gotcha gotcha i was telling like everyone about this as soon as i knew i was going to the
00:54:51because i wanted people to be having that conversation and a lot of what i heard was
00:54:56it's a very timely decision because in a couple weeks that we couldn't be having this conversation
00:55:02and that just hurt that's a huge conversation that's effectively shut down soon i'm excited
00:55:09to see the supreme court case like u.s right like they're at this i'm just which the people i mean
00:55:15the people in my school were saying it's going to ban abortion and i'm like no i'm pretty sure
00:55:21like at least what the leaked opinion does is just say there is no federal right to privacy
00:55:26which makes like no difference in a case in a state like new york or california
00:55:30and a lot of difference in a state like missouri
00:55:46so as attorney general i don't really have to say my politics i just have to give good
00:55:52legal counsel to the state which is what attorney general does i want to start off with giving out
00:55:57definitions especially since we get the opportunity to speak first i think we should hit them with
00:56:01this is how we're defining this this is how we're defining that this is how we're defining this
00:56:04and our opposing counsel has not done that at all they haven't defined anything but they're
00:56:08saying that privacy is being violated personally i believe there should be the choice to go to
00:56:11counseling but i have to decide what would be the best for the outcome of this case and not my own
00:56:18like personal belief it's a bit of like a moral dilemma
00:56:29the missouri girls state supreme court is now in session the honorable gia singh presiding
00:56:35the case was definitely where it belongs in front of women the constitution was written
00:56:47hundreds of years ago by a bunch of old white guys that don't know what's happening today so
00:56:52much has happened since then um so it's really it's a tough job to apply it to right now
00:57:00argument for the appellant yes your honor may it please the court it does all right i first
00:57:07want to start this off by defining privacy because that is one of the main parts of today's case
00:57:12privacy according to oxford dictionary is the state of being free from public attention
00:57:16this is important because the opposing counsel is arguing that under the current missouri law
00:57:21women's right to privacy is being breached when they are going into a counselor's office before
00:57:25receiving an abortion now that moves us on to doctor patient confidentiality which is defined
00:57:31as mutual consent between physician and patient so as we're seeing that most counselors that
00:57:36give pre-counseling advice are medical officials hippa and doctor patient confidentiality is
00:57:41present that counselor would not be able to go and share that information to the public or even
00:57:47anyone else okay so do you believe someone unwillingly sharing information about themselves
00:57:53to another person is a breach of privacy i i don't think i can answer that question without
00:58:00knowing what unwilling would look like because if there's a gun to your head then obviously that's a
00:58:04breach of privacy but if you are in a room where you know what's going to happen within that room
00:58:08i personally wouldn't define that as unwilling but do they really choose to enter if they're
00:58:13not allowed to have an abortion unless they go i think that that is a great point but that's just
00:58:18not what this case is about it's about whether or not that counselor is sharing information with
00:58:23others i rest my case and thank you do we have an argument for the respondent yes your honor
00:58:33honorable justices of the court the state has failed to prove that the privacy of the client
00:58:38remained intact so what is privacy privacy not according to the oxford dictionary but privacy
00:58:45according to law privacy is the right not to have one's personal matters disclosed or publicized
00:58:52so if i'm understanding correctly HIPAA ensures that medical professionals cannot share a patient's
00:58:58details do you know if these count if HIPAA is applicable to these counselors as well
00:59:04yes the counselors would have HIPAA intact to them but that's not what we have to take into
00:59:08consideration they didn't choose to go to this source to talk to them does that deter the person
00:59:15from going back to said clinic well ultimately it decides on the person but the things that they
00:59:20show within the counseling do typically try to stir people away from getting an abortion so
00:59:25they'll show what the process of getting an abortion is so that the woman is feeling more
00:59:28guilty when she was already set in her decision so just to clarify the abortion process cannot
00:59:33resume until they act like after they had counseling yes that is correct they don't
00:59:37choose to go to counseling before they choose to get an abortion that's where the privacy is being
00:59:41broken and that's what the state failed to address um constitution thank you thank you your honors
00:59:49supreme court case number one amelia versus the state of missouri
00:59:54is now taken under submission the missouri girls state supreme court is now in recess
00:59:59so was that very different from the trial so much more different they actually know
01:00:15the process of the law this time i am excited to see what the court rules
01:00:20they're required no they're required to listen they don't have the privacy to not listen that's
01:00:25it got confusing i think the main argument is whether or not you believe telling a medical
01:00:30professional something well there's a breach of privacy allowed also a big thing is that anything
01:00:34that they say within those sessions is never publicly released and whether they go to the
01:00:38sessions or not but i think the fact that it's like not getting public isn't the privacy breach
01:00:43it's the fact that they have to go they are forced forced they are i feel like privacy rights also
01:00:49like being showed disturbing images and being forced to sit there like yeah so i think the best
01:00:57thing to do is focus like tunnel vision on breach of privacy why do you guys view like somebody
01:01:04going to counseling like somebody has to like a requirement for something because how is that a
01:01:09breach of privacy it still requires somebody to unwillingly share information about themselves
01:01:15to another person yes i think that's a breach of privacy yeah so um what have we decided we
01:01:20have not decided we must decide we need to be seated
01:01:34um
01:01:40the court was split five to two five judges agreeing that this was a breach of privacy
01:01:46the court sides with amelia
01:01:50the missouri girls state supreme court is now in recess
01:02:05first of all great job y'all a really great case
01:02:11i really enjoyed like being able to like present my argument and like
01:02:15be an attorney but to be totally honest am i happy that amelia won yes i am
01:02:28being able to talk about it here is great it's awesome but i'm 16
01:02:34i can't go out there and pass legislation or rule on any kind of actual court
01:02:42so i mean it's it was great it felt empowering but it also made me pretty sad
01:02:55i could say like um i think as women sensitive facts us the biggest issue is that these
01:03:02conversations about abortion are happening between men in the senate because women are wildly
01:03:08underrepresented in the senate and house so no matter what your
01:03:11opinion on it is i want you elected so they can be part of the conversation
01:03:17okay
01:03:23my tummy is getting a little bit excited
01:03:32worried worried saw her honestly my biggest competition from the other side here's the
01:03:37thing she is a public speaker she does debate she's gonna have a great speech i'm gonna have
01:03:41a great speech not a public speaker currently i think my largest competition is emily emily has
01:03:47just been talking to a ton of people you know she was one of the first people that ever approached
01:03:50me this is my worry that is what i was gonna say you should be worried i'm fearing hey guys my
01:03:56name is emily worth more and you guys have probably seen me around because i have been making a point
01:04:01to go and try to meet as many of you as possible so i'm asking no shoot what am i doing okay sorry
01:04:07okay hey all my sorry that was cute i don't know where i'm picking up the y'all um in addition
01:04:14no what am i saying i'm sorry maybe it's not a good idea i don't know i'm like rambling
01:04:20what are these sauces what are the sauces
01:04:29kill me no don't sorry i'm fine sorry
01:04:37with food i'll drop in a day
01:04:42where are you going oh it's like the last i don't know everything i know i know but you're
01:04:48fine oh that was the stupidest thing okay stop you're like i'll get some more
01:04:57do i rather or not talk about it or just it's just i'm just
01:04:59a mess and that was just not a good time to do something stupid i don't know
01:05:03oh okay yeah all right i need to finish writing my speech
01:05:22as your governor i promise to live by these words to love to care and to be there i want you all to
01:05:27go into the world and be whatever you want i want you to be brave and bold because every single one
01:05:31of you is amazing all right i love you guys see you later i'll continue to unify the federalist
01:05:38party my name is faith glasgow and i would love your vote for denver
01:05:54the 22 party convention of missouri girls state is hereby called to order
01:06:10now can we have all of our governors come up
01:06:17throughout my time as a leader i have raised over 20 000
01:06:21i have helped collect and donate over 500 pairs of socks to the homeless
01:06:26now i don't say this to woo you i say this because i want you to know that i deliver
01:06:32on what i set my mind to i've heard my whole life that i couldn't do something just because i am a
01:06:37woman i've been told i couldn't sit talk or even burp like that just because i am a woman this
01:06:43should not be the case though men and women should have equal rights around the world and especially
01:06:48in america where we are one nation we as women are constantly pitted against each other and i'm
01:06:55sick of it i don't really do big on public speaking but i don't want to sit back and be that
01:07:01girl that's in the back that doesn't run for any position i want to be that girl that shows other
01:07:09people that she can stand up and be a leader
01:07:16next we have faith glasgow
01:07:21so my name is faith glasgow and before i begin my speech i would like to ask you all to join me in
01:07:27a moment of silence for the victims of the over 250 mass shootings in the present year 2022
01:07:39thank you for joining you know a lot of candidates have and are going to come up here and list their
01:07:44many many leadership positions and accomplishments that qualify them for their position and to that
01:07:48i say that's why we're all here instead i would like to tell you a story recently i had the
01:07:54opportunity to partner with a good friend of mine and lead a protest and petition signing of over
01:07:58700 students we rallied in opposition of an organization creating a chapter at my school
01:08:04turning point usa is known for its bigoted viewpoints against the lgbt community and white
01:08:09supremacy the result of this protest the school board is now reconsidering district policy i'm
01:08:19not a stranger to leadership and advocacy i saw a problem and i started a movement to fix it
01:08:24citizens of girls day ultimately i would have the job of signing legislation with that stated i would
01:08:28like to discuss issues that i personally care about based on my introduction i support common
01:08:33sense gun law we need deeper background checks something that 84 percent of gun owners already
01:08:38support african americans are four times more likely to be arrested for crimes that white and
01:08:43black people committed the exact same rates systemic racism and our criminal justice system
01:08:48deserves adjustment now this week has been extremely hot but by god it's going to get
01:08:54even hotter if we don't do something about global warming that's why i support
01:08:58a funding increase for renewable energy to combat greenhouse gas emissions
01:09:05as far as girl state i would like looser dress codes i would also like the food
01:09:09policies to change my name is faith glasgow please vote for me for your governor
01:09:19next we have emily
01:09:29hello federalists chances are that you've already met me but my name is emily worthmore and i'm
01:09:35running for governor throughout this week i've made it my top priority to get to know
01:09:39as many of you as possible which by the way is quite the undertaking because there are a lot of
01:09:45you most of you already know that this tree has deep roots in christ in addition i am a supporter
01:09:53and protector of the freedoms that we have in america the most opportunity filled country on
01:09:58earth in my eyes i see the people before the politics i believe that these in-person discussions
01:10:10about what makes every one of us unique both politically and as humans is what makes us
01:10:16that's what makes us americans in general right that's what's holding us together if we can find
01:10:21one thing in common even if it's just the fact that we are all americans and we all want the
01:10:24best for this country then that is good enough for me finally i would like to remind everyone
01:10:29that i will not only be finishing off this week by being sworn in as governor but more importantly
01:10:34i would be serving the future generation of delegates next year thank you that's not what
01:10:40i meant to say that's not what i meant
01:10:45next we have cecilia barton
01:10:50i'm supposed to come up here and tell you the most important most compelling part of myself
01:10:55so i will i'm selfish i'm selfish because i have to be we all have to be women in america are given
01:11:03respect as a lifeguard i have been told by middle-aged men cecilia you should smile i have
01:11:10been told by 12-year-old boys that i have an attitude and even here girls stay a place that
01:11:16is meant to empower women our bodies are police we are told that our shorts are too short and our
01:11:23tops are too scandalous we are shamed for having bodies with curves and as your governor i will not
01:11:30let this stand i am proud that when i smile it is because i am happy and not because a man told me
01:11:36to i am proud that i do my job diligently and i am proud that my personality is not limited by a
01:11:46man's definition of what a woman should be and standing in front of this crowd today this crowd
01:11:52of future leaders i can say with certainty that the future is female god can save the world women
01:12:03we will save america so be prideful be selfish and vote cecilia for your
01:12:09girl state governor thank you very much
01:12:34thank you so much excuse me guys sorry i appreciated that you were real and transparent
01:12:43about being christian thank you yours was really good too definitely out of all the other candidates
01:12:48thanks thank you i did too honestly hey
01:12:54i know it's a lot of pressure so don't feel like you have to be so perfect okay
01:12:59you know what really really i know but breathe breathe because i can see it because i'm not the
01:13:07same person so breathe i can't you can't you can't inhale okay thanks good luck seriously
01:13:16you too
01:13:23expectations class standout rising star the girl projected to go far exceed the standard raise the
01:13:31bar all eyes on the chosen one expectations competitive drive have to survive because
01:13:39legends never die if you lose you will disappoint their expectations so you smile and hide it
01:13:48grin and bear it take their punches and never share it how could i ever meet my own expectations
01:14:01okay
01:14:02okay
01:14:02I voted for Emily.
01:14:30I don't necessarily think she's going to win.
01:14:31Actually, I know she's not going to win.
01:14:34But I think that she went and talked to a lot of people.
01:14:38She heard a lot of people.
01:14:40She heard a lot of voices she didn't necessarily want to hear.
01:14:44She had a lot of hard conversations.
01:14:46That's not easy.
01:14:47That takes guts.
01:14:48Guts I don't have.
01:14:52And I don't agree with the policies she would create, but I think she is a good human being.
01:15:07I think as soon as Cecilia went up there and was about 20 seconds into her speech, I was
01:15:12like, I think she's going to win.
01:15:15Because it's an entire crowd of 500 women, and when you're essentially giving a feminist
01:15:19manifesto up on stage, you know, it gets the crowd going.
01:15:24I think Cecilia just really hit home on something that a lot of people cared about, and it's
01:15:28not that people didn't care about the things in my speech either.
01:15:31It was just immediate because they were experiencing it here.
01:15:49Are you ladies ready?
01:16:00And now, for your Missouri Girl State Governor, Cecilia Biden!
01:16:13Mr. Doorkeeper, open the door, and allow the Governor-Elect of Missouri Boys State,
01:16:38the Honorable, to enter the chamber.
01:17:08The Missouri Governor, Mike Parson, will now administer the oath of office to the Missouri
01:17:12Boys State Governor-Elect.
01:17:28You may either swear or affirm.
01:17:30Repeat after me.
01:17:31I, Cooper Peck Barron, do solemnly swear.
01:17:35I, Cooper Peck Barron, do solemnly swear.
01:17:39That I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of Governor of Missouri Boys
01:17:43State.
01:17:44That I will faithfully discharge the duties of officer of Missouri Boys State.
01:17:48Congratulations, Governor.
01:17:49Thank you, sir.
01:18:05Yeah, and they want to write my article.
01:18:20Yeah?
01:18:21Yeah.
01:18:22It'll be good.
01:18:23Hopefully.
01:18:24What's exciting?
01:18:25What would it be?
01:18:26Um, the inequalities between boys and girls.
01:18:29I don't think they'd publish it, but I kind of want to know.
01:18:32They wouldn't publish it, but that's cool and good, so.
01:18:34But that would be fun to go for.
01:18:36Yeah.
01:18:37Just to see what happens.
01:18:38Yeah.
01:18:39Also, just to be able to assess on your own.
01:18:40Like, you can still learn stuff.
01:18:41Yeah, and also, like, research.
01:18:42I want to research the amount of funding that goes into, like, both.
01:18:47You know?
01:18:48But also, then again, I don't know if that's a good idea while I'm trying for that Lindenwood
01:18:51Hey!
01:18:52Hey, I'm doing really good!
01:18:53So I was waiting until somebody came out because I wanted to talk about doing a story, but
01:19:14I kind of need a little bit of permission, kind of.
01:19:15So, I'm going to do, like, an investigative piece on, like, how, like, boys and girls
01:19:19state are really different.
01:19:20not compare the programs because they are different yeah but like why are they
01:19:23different? Who would you talk to? Who would be your sources? I would want to go
01:19:26over there and I'm hoping that there would be I don't know if there's like a
01:19:30head of the Boys State over there that I could talk to him ideally. What is it
01:19:35Thursday you probably need to create that today. Like do you think I could
01:19:38turn it in at midnight tonight and have something happen with it or do you think?
01:19:41I think it's an important story.
01:19:50Do you see any inequalities between Boys and Girls State Missouri? I think we are
01:19:54on a more stricter like we're held to a higher standard than the boys here like
01:20:00yeah like the dress code. Our counselors kind of shut it down like they don't
01:20:04like talking about it like they're kind of like one of those things that they
01:20:07like roll their eyes and they're like let's not talk about that. We're a
01:20:10different organization than them like we don't do what they do we don't need to
01:20:14talk about we don't need to discuss it so it almost feels like they're avoiding
01:20:17the situation.
01:20:48I don't know if that's what they're talking about but if it's the same thing, Boys State spends $4 million and they spend $769,000.
01:20:58My first question is how much of a dollar amount goes into Missouri Girls
01:21:03State or Girls State as a general program? $200,000 for the week-long
01:21:07experience for our citizens and staff which does limit some of the operational
01:21:14freedoms that ALA Missouri Girls State has on our own. So with Girls State and
01:21:22Boys State being in one place it's kind of opened the door for a lot of
01:21:25comparisons and I know they are two separate programs that's been stressed
01:21:28to us a lot but still it does open the door for some comparisons and also some
01:21:33possible inequalities so I was wondering if you roughly know how much money goes
01:21:38into Missouri Boys State? Roughly $600,000.
01:21:42It's a significant difference in the way they're funded. ALA Missouri Girls State is a subsidiary organization of the American Legion of Soldiers Department of Missouri.
01:21:51So they do have some access to some other funding resources that we do not have.
01:22:00What are you doing? Writing for journalism. Where? Probably you know that swing bench or under a tree.
01:22:05You have to have a buddy. Okay.
01:22:36Marching arms!
01:22:55Detail halt!
01:22:57Marching arms!
01:23:27Marching arms!
01:23:32Alright, hey guys. I'm doing a journalism piece on the inequalities between Boys and Girls State.
01:23:38Like are there anything that you wish that you could do like Girls State does?
01:23:41Y'all are like have a lot of free time. We're like go, go, go!
01:23:48I feel like I don't know enough about Girls State. We had a packed schedule that's for sure.
01:23:53Were you guys debating actual issues?
01:23:55I feel like when it came to debating stuff in Boys State, it was based off the real world.
01:24:01You know just real life issues. Are you more conservative or liberal?
01:24:05Or you don't have to put yourself in a box, you can say something.
01:24:08Actually, one of the reasons I came to Boys State was to learn more about politics and actually find where I stand.
01:24:15So as of right now, nowhere.
01:24:17That was an incredibly politician way to answer that question.
01:24:21Can I take a picture of your name tag so I can quote you?
01:24:23Yeah, I'll catch you later.
01:24:25Nice meeting you.
01:24:50I had originally titled it Inequalities Between Programs, but the title is now Incompatible for Comparison,
01:25:13which is something I wrote in the article.
01:25:15I wrote how the counselors had been telling us that it was incompatible for comparison.
01:25:19So I don't know if that was just an artistic choice by the publisher.
01:25:24I would have added a question mark there.
01:25:26Incompatible for comparison?
01:25:28Like, you know, that tone?
01:25:30But I don't know if it was intended to be changed like that, to have a different effect.
01:25:37But if it was, it's kind of disappointing.
01:25:50The American Legion Auxiliary first established the 11th Girls State Program, Missouri Girls State, in 1940.
01:25:59Since that first session, the program has moved throughout the state from its original location at William Woods College.
01:26:07And finally, making Missouri history, the program is being run concurrently with the Missouri Boys State Program on the Lindenwood University campus.
01:26:18This change has sparked conversations of comparison between the two programs, and has also made apparent possible inequalities between the sessions.
01:26:33One goal that is repeatedly reaffirmed throughout the week is women's empowerment.
01:26:40The delegates have been told to critically consider the world in which they live, as well as speak out for what they believe is right.
01:26:58However, some leadership within the Girls State Program has discouraged talk surrounding comparison between programs,
01:27:05citing that the programs are intended to be different, and are therefore incompatible for comparison.
01:27:12It may be a long road to fiscal equity and a solution to certain social injustices that delegates feel exist.
01:27:21But by starting the conversation and bringing attention to differences between programs,
01:27:26Girls State and Boys State can become one step closer to equality.
01:27:33Will the honorary colonels please bring forward the governor-elect, Cecilia Barton.
01:27:38I'm very thankful to be in the time period that I'm currently living in, because there are a lot of opportunities for me by law, right?
01:27:58I'm very thankful to be in the time period that I'm currently living in, because there are a lot of opportunities for me by law, right?
01:28:08But there are still these secret, sneaky, possibly misogynistic viewpoints, maybe by parents, maybe by society as a whole, maybe by social media,
01:28:18that will creep up, and because it's not so blatant and so obvious, I think it's even harder to fight.
01:28:29I think every woman is leaving here feeling better about themselves, feeling more supported as a woman.
01:28:35But I don't think we should use Girls State as a way to further condition women for sexism.
01:28:42I think the conversation should less be preparing us for sexism, and more teaching us how to combat sexism.
01:28:50But I'm a hopeful person, so I really do think that things will get better.
01:29:21We love you so, we fear it. We love you so, we fear it.
01:29:30We love you so, we fear it. We love you so, we fear it.
01:29:41We love you so, we fear it. We love you so.
01:30:11Do you want to know the first thing I thought when I saw you?
01:30:41What?
01:30:42I was wondering how someone could make being here look so easy.
01:30:47No.
01:30:48Like, actually. Like, you were just sitting in assembly, like, a couple rows across from me, and you were just, like, talking with people perfectly fine,
01:30:57and, like, it took so much effort for me to go, like, out of my way to even, like, casually talk to people.
01:31:02I'm glad you thought that about me. I, like, I don't know. I guess I just internalized everything that if I'm not as good as someone else, like, I'm not doing enough.
01:31:14Trust me, I know the feeling.
01:31:17Yeah.
01:31:18Look.
01:31:28It was important to me that I realized I could, like, have fun with people I don't know and, like, be social.
01:31:36But I learned that I really genuinely like my serious image. Not all the time, but I learned that I'm not truly happy letting go of it.
01:31:51I've always been confident, but, like, this has just really, like, accelerated that, and I know my friends back home are about to be so sick of this ego, but it's okay because I just, I feel like I've earned it.
01:32:04I love you so much.
01:32:05I love you so much.
01:32:15You have a good kid right here.
01:32:21You don't meet a lot of people like her.
01:32:24Stop.
01:32:28He surprised me and, like, I'm really grateful for that.
01:32:33Even though I failed, he kind of pushed me to recognize, you know, where do you stand?
01:32:41Even if I'm not running for president in 2040, I hope I'm doing something that I think is important and fulfilling.
01:32:49Now, anybody interested in getting a scholarship?
01:32:55This scholarship is going to Emily Worthmore.
01:33:25I would be complex.
01:33:45I would be cool.
01:33:48They say I played the field before I found someone to commit to.
01:33:52That would be okay for me to do.
01:33:56Every conquest I had made would make me more of a boss to you.
01:34:02I'd be a fearless leader.
01:34:04I'd be an alpha type.
01:34:06When everyone believes you, what's that like?
01:34:10I'm so sick of running as fast as I can, wondering if I'd get there quicker if I was a man.
01:34:18And I'm so sick of them coming at me again, because if I was a man, then I'd be the man.
01:34:27I'd be the man.
01:34:31I'd be the man.
01:34:37But in the work, they wouldn't shake their heads and question how much of this I deserve.
01:34:44What I was wearing.
01:34:46If I was rude, could I be separated from my good ideas and power moves?
01:34:55And they would toast to me like the players play.
01:34:59I'd be just like Leo in St. Tropez.
01:35:03I'm so sick of running as fast as I can, wondering if I'd get there quicker if I was a man.
01:35:11And I'm so sick of them coming at me again, because if I was a man, then I'd be the man.
01:35:19I'd be the man.
01:35:23I'd be the man.
01:35:27What's it like to brag about raking in dollars and getting bitches and models?
01:35:32And it's all good if you're bad, and it's okay if you're mad.
01:35:36If I was out flashing my dollars, I'd be a bitch, not a father.
01:35:41They paint me out to be bad, so it's okay that I'm mad.
01:35:46I'm so sick of running as fast as I can, wondering if I'd get there quicker if I was a man.
01:35:54And I'm so sick of them coming at me again, because if I was a man, then I'd be the man.
01:36:03I'm so sick of running as fast as I can, wondering if I'd get there quicker if I was a man.
01:36:12And I'm so sick of them coming at me again, because if I was a man, then I'd be the man.
01:36:20I'd be the man.
01:36:24I'd be the man.
01:36:29I'd be the man.
01:36:33I'd be the man.
01:36:36I'd be the man.
01:36:42I'd be the man.
