00:00Water, the elixir of life.
00:06Water.
00:08All living things are dependent on water.
00:16It is an integral part of their bodies.
00:22Many plants and animals can live only in water.
00:28Water is also a very important component of our diet.
00:36We need water for our daily activities.
00:42Like cooking, cleaning, washing utensils and clothes etc.
00:52About 3-4th part of our earth also called the blue planet is covered with water.
01:02This water is present as fresh water, sea water and brackish water.
01:12Out of this only 3% is fresh water.
01:18While the rest is sea water and brackish water.
01:25This is why we must always use water carefully and not waste it.
01:34Fresh water contains lesser amount of dissolved salts than sea water.
01:42We use fresh water for drinking, bathing, cooking, washing and agriculture.
01:52Rain is the chief source of fresh water on earth.
01:59Fresh water is present in rivers, lakes, ponds, tanks and wells.
02:11Sea water that is present in seas and oceans contains higher amount of salts.
02:22It is unfit for drinking, cooking, washing and agriculture.
02:31Brackish water contains more dissolved salts as compared to fresh water but lesser salts than sea water.
02:44Brackish water mostly occurs in places where rivers meet the seas.
02:53Some lakes close to coastal regions are also known to have brackish water.
03:01This water is not fit for any use.
03:07Formation of Rain
03:12Rain is formed due to the journey of water from the water bodies on the earth's surface to the sky and back to the earth.
03:24Water present in water bodies slowly evaporates into the air as water vapor.
03:35Water Cycle
03:38Water in the oceans, seas, rivers and lakes gets heated by the sun and evaporates forming water vapor.
03:51This water vapor rises up.
03:56When this water vapor comes in contact with the cool air high up on a mountain, it condenses to form tiny drops of water.
04:08These tiny drops join together to form clouds.
04:15As more drops join together, the clouds become heavy and come down in the form of rain or snow.
04:27The rain water flows down into the rivers, lakes, seas and oceans.
04:37Water from rivers, lakes, seas and oceans evaporates again.
04:46This cycle keeps going on in the nature.
04:50This is called the water cycle.
04:55Water from the natural source to our home
05:02Water is an extremely important part of our daily life.
05:09The water that we consume must be clean and germ free.
05:16We receive tap water in our homes through a series of pipes.
05:24This water is made fit for consumption by killing the bacteria and removing other impurities present in it.
05:34Tap water passes through several cleaning processes in water treatment plants before it is made fit for human consumption.
05:46Water Pollution
05:50We often see people dumping garbage into water sources like rivers, lakes, streams etc.
06:02Factories and industries also dump huge amounts of waste and toxic matter into nearby water bodies.
06:15Dumping of waste in water makes it dirty causing water pollution.
06:24Aquatic life is adversely affected by these activities.
06:32Many water borne diseases such as jaundice, gastroenteritis, typhoid etc. are a result of water pollution.
06:45Therefore, it becomes very important to purify water at home specially for cooking and drinking purposes.
06:59We can do this either by using a water filter or by simply boiling the water.
07:09Nowadays, electronic water filters are available in the market that can be directly attached to water taps.
07:20Conservation of Water
07:25Fresh water is scarce and so it is important to conserve water as much as we can and avoid wastage.
07:44Some easy ways of conserving water are
07:511. Water your lawn at night to prevent loss of water through evaporation.
07:592. Always use a pail when you wash the car to reduce wastage of water.
08:093. Turn off the tap when you brush and do not leave the tap running.
08:174. A leaking tap should be fixed immediately to prevent wastage of water.
08:27Rain Water Harvesting
08:32Rain is the main natural source of water on the earth.
08:41When it rains, the water fills our rivers, lakes, seas etc.
08:51However, a small part also seeps into the soil and collects a little deeper into the soil as underground water.
09:05Rain water harvesting refers to the act of saving rain water falling on land for future use.
09:17In several parts of India, housing societies have started rain water harvesting.
09:27The rain falling on the roof is channeled into underground storage tanks and is stored for use later.
