00:00Talking to Hitman Hoops, a Memphis basketball analyst on Twitter at Hitman Hoops.
00:04What's your understanding and assessment of Memphis' NIL situation for basketball?
00:08How good is it?
00:10I would say it's top 15 is what I would say.
00:14I would put it more in that 10 to 15 range, you know, where it was.
00:19I do think that poll was based off, obviously, you know, recency bias and factors into the
00:23poll and then, you know, there's definitely quite a bit misunderstanding of which schools
00:29are paying which players, you know, what's actually promised, what's actually paid to
00:33those players as well, how those contracts are structured.
00:38I think all that plays into the perception that coaches have of other programs.
00:42I will say that, you know, Arkansas, BYU, those are probably your top two for last season.
00:50Again, it differs so much between each season.
00:56And they noted that in their article as well.
00:58I mean, if you have a new coach coming in, your boosters are going to rally around that
01:01and, you know, you're going to have more NILs for that season.
01:04So I really think that poll was, you know, recently, but I would put, given what I know
01:10of the money situation in Memphis and what they've paid for their players, I would definitely
01:16put them in that 10 to 15 range.
01:17And I do think it's a strong donor base and it has the capability of becoming even stronger.
01:24It's just, it really depends on how the university, the AD, the new AD, how they want to prioritize
01:31NIL.
01:32I know the last AD was very old school style thinking, was late to modernize NIL in Memphis.
01:40So that definitely held them back a lot.
