Project UFO - 1x10 - The Waterford Incident

Boys at a military school become involved with a strange substance from a UFO and a hunter is attacked by a robot. Joyce Brothers stars as Dr. Paulson. Based very loosely on the Cisco Grove UFO Encounter as reported in 1964.
Note: The robot is a version of the Robby the Robot suit featuring a shorter head with a giant green eye.

00:16Ezekiel saw the wheel. This is the wheel he said he saw.
00:22These are unidentified flying objects that people say they are seeing now.
00:29Are they proof that we are being visited by civilizations from other stars?
00:34Or just what are they?
00:37The United States Air Force began an investigation of this high strangeness in a search for the truth.
00:44What you are about to see is part of that 20 year search.

01:43Hey! What's that?

03:35What's on the agenda, Mage?
03:37We're on our way to Waterford.
03:39Good. Waterford.
03:41Northeast Iowa. Private military school.
03:44There's a report the whole place is wrapped up in some kind of web-like substance.
03:48Web-like substance?
03:50As in spider. Only this one, we're told, was spun by a flying saucer.
03:54Music
04:11I'm just thinking about that newsman who filed that report.
04:14That web-like substance.
04:16What about it?
04:17He called it angel hair.

04:36Welcome to Waterford Military Academy.
04:38Colonel Max Delaney, United States Army, retired.
04:41At your service, Major.
04:42Thank you, sir.
04:46You're wondering about the spider web, or angel's hair, as the newspapers call it?
04:50Yes, sir. The newspaper reports said that there was something that covered this whole area.
04:54I see nothing unusual.
04:55Not anymore. You don't, and you won't.
04:57And as far as I'm concerned, good riddance.
04:59Good riddance.
05:00That's what I said, Sergeant.
05:02Andrews!
05:03Yes, sir.
05:04I'll show these gentlemen their quarters. Dismiss the details.
05:06Yes, sir.
05:09Major, Sergeant, would you follow me, please?
05:15Detail dismissed.
05:18Colonel, can you tell us what happened to the substance?
05:20Well, last night this place was covered with it.
05:22Then the rain came, and it just disappeared.
05:25And you say it came from an undenified flying object?
05:28I said nothing of the kind, Sergeant.
05:30Some of my cadets may have said that. I guess that's why you're here.
05:34But to put it bluntly, I have no use for UFOs or flying saucers or whatever you want to call them.
05:39I especially have no use for them when they impugn the reputation of this school.
05:43Is it hurting the school's reputation?
05:45I don't think we really need the kind of publicity this incident is certain to create.
05:49Can you tell us what this so-called angel hair was?
05:52I can't tell you what it was, Major.
05:55But I can show you what it did.
05:57Green hands, Major.
05:59Every one of them.
06:00Just from touching the stuff.
06:07Andrews?
06:09Company, seat!
06:12Everyone here saw that web that covered this place.
06:15How many boys are in the school?
06:17Well, uh...
06:21Normally we have a complement of 185 cadets.
06:25But this is spring break, so most of the boys are home.
06:28There are only 15 here now.
06:30How many actually saw the UFO?
06:32Three.
06:33There was Mr. Radcliffe, Mr. Brown, and Mr. Delaney.
06:36Delaney?
06:37That's right, Sergeant.
06:38Tim Delaney, my grandson.
06:41He was involved in this asinine nonsense.
06:44You seem upset, Colonel.
06:45Concern is a better word.
06:47Do you know how long this academy has been in existence, Major?
06:5175 years.
06:5375 years preparing young Americans to make a better contribution to this nation of ours.
06:59Parents send their sons here not only to get an education,
07:02but to instill a national pride,
07:04a modicum of discipline,
07:06an appreciation for being a gentleman and an officer.
07:09And I do not like the thought that during my eight-year tenure at this academy,
07:13I have become involved in such outright silliness.
07:16Colonel, we understand what you're trying to say.
07:19Well, if you understand what I'm trying to say, Sergeant, you'll do something about this.
07:23The newspapers are trying to make Waterford a three-ring circus,
07:27and I will not have it inferred that this academy is some kind of a freak farm.
07:31Every one of these boys is a fine young American,
07:34and I don't want them or this school held up to any form of ridicule.
07:38Nor do we, Colonel.
07:39All we're interested in is finding out the truth.
07:42Well, that's all I can ask, Major.
07:44How can we assist you?
07:46We'd like to talk to the three boys who made the sighting.
07:48Very well.
07:49Is there someplace privately that we could talk?
07:51Well, there's classroom four. That's in another building.
07:54That'd be fine. Thank you.
07:55Mr. Andrews?
07:56Yes, sir.
07:57I want those saucer spotters, front and center.
07:59Yes, sir. Right away, sir.
08:00Mr. Brown, Mr. Radcliffe, Mr. Delaney.
08:04I want you men to report to classroom four, on the double.
08:07Yes, sir.
08:10Sir.
08:11Mr. Delaney?
08:12Request permission to use the latrine first, sir.
08:14Permission granted.
08:24Matty, what we like to do, boys, is to go over your story in as much detail as possible.
08:30What's going to happen to us, sir?
08:32Nothing's going to happen to you.
08:34I want you to understand that we're here doing a job, just like you.
08:37And you have your job going to school, and we have our job investigating UFO sightings.
08:42And when this is all over, nothing will have changed, except we will have all had a new experience.
08:46How's that?
08:48Gee, it really sounds great.
08:50How do you get into your line of work, sir?
08:52Well, that's sort of hard to explain.
08:55Project Bloober. I bet it's real simple.
08:58Project Bloober. I bet it's real secret stuff, huh?
09:01Well, it's not really all that mysterious.
09:03Our job is to try and find evidence.
09:06It's either there or it isn't.
09:08What kind of evidence?
09:09Put it this way.
09:10If someone claims to have seen an unidentified flying object,
09:13we look for some sign of proof that it really wasn't his imagination.
09:17You mean like a piece of their spaceship, or something like that?
09:20Yes, or not even that much.
09:22Maybe some indication of how the craft operates.
09:25What propels it?
09:27Was there any fuel residue?
09:29Impact impressions?
09:30Evidence of that nature.
09:32That's probably what we saw.
09:33What's that?
09:34What you said. Residue.
09:36Fuel residue.
09:37Yeah. Maybe it wasn't an alien spiderweb.
09:40Maybe it was just fuel residue.
09:42I think we better take it from the beginning.
09:44Who wants to lead off?
09:46I have the rank, sir.
09:47Okay. It's all yours.
09:49Well, it was yesterday afternoon.
09:52One of the landings sent us the flight details just before dinner.
09:55After we struck the colors and completed the proper folding maneuvers,
09:59we started back to the mess hall where the other cadets were getting ready for dinner.
10:03The first thing we heard was a strange noise.
10:53And that's what happened.
10:56Everybody came out and started playing on the stuff.
10:59It wasn't until later that we told them about the saucer.
11:02You know, after all their hands turned green.
11:05Then last night, it rained pretty hard.
11:07And when we got up this morning, the stuff was all washed away.
11:10Is that how you saw it, Paul?
11:12Yes, sir. Just like that. Everything. Only...
11:15Only what, Paul?
11:17When you hear somebody tell about it, well, it really sounds dumb, you know?
11:21Well, if it's the truth, stick by it.
11:23It's the truth, sir. Cadet honor, sir.
11:27Tell me.
11:32Do you believe us, sir?
11:34We believe you saw something.
11:36Now we got to try to prove it.
11:38How will you do that, sir?
11:40With your help.
11:47Mr. Delaney, I want to see you.
11:50What's your opinion now, gentlemen?
11:52Well, we went over it several times.
11:54The boys are emphatic in what they claim to have seen, Colonel.
11:57And Tim, uh, he corroborates what the other boys say?
12:00Yes, sir, he does.
12:01He doesn't have much to say, but he doesn't disagree with the others.
12:05Colonel, we noticed the NASA material you have on the bulletin boards in there.
12:09Yes, the space program is a very important part of our science curriculum.
12:13What are you suggesting, Major?
12:15It's a possibility, Colonel.
12:16The wrong study of the space program and lively classroom discussion could help feed young imaginations.
12:22That could be an explanation?
12:24Partial explanation, Colonel.
12:25We still have that angel hair and those green hands to deal with.
12:28Too bad some wasn't recovered before the rain washed it away.
12:32I've got some of it, sir.
12:35What's that, son?
12:36The fuel, whatchamacallit.
12:38I've got some of it, sir.
12:40You want to see it?
12:47I saved it.
12:48You can have some if you want it, sir.
12:55What are you playing, Major?
12:56I don't recall ever seeing anything like it.
13:00All the other boys got scared when their hands turned green from that stuff.
13:03But I knew it wouldn't hurt nothing.
13:05Anything, the lady?
13:06Yes, sir, anything.
13:07I'm sorry, sir.
13:08I'm sorry.
13:09I'm sorry.
13:10I'm sorry.
13:11I'm sorry.
13:12I'm sorry.
13:13I'm sorry.
13:14I'm sorry.
13:15Yes, sir, anything.
13:17What do you mean, son?
13:21I just knew that's all.
13:22Mr. Delaney, you can go now.
13:24You're dismissed.
13:25Yes, sir.
13:34Sir?
13:46Excuse me.
14:04Do you mind if I join you?
14:06No, it's okay, sir.
14:09Timmy, how did you know that the angel hair wouldn't hurt anyone?
14:15You trust me, don't you?
14:20Whatever you tell me, it's just between us.
14:22Nobody else.
14:24Would the colonel have to know about it?
14:26Not unless you want to tell him.
14:29I saw them.
14:30Up close.
14:32They hurt me, so I knew they wouldn't hurt anyone else.
14:35Let's go in here.
14:37You can tell me all about it.
14:43Pick your spot.
14:44Where do you want to sit?
14:47Okay, good.
14:51Have you told any of the other boys?
14:53No, sir.
14:54Did you have a reason for not telling them?
14:56Well, they would have said I made it up.
14:58But I didn't.
14:59I didn't make it up.
15:00Go on, Tim.
15:01Tell me what happened.
15:03Well, all the boys were so busy playing in that stuff.
15:05I knew it had to be what you said it was.
15:08You mean fuel residue.
15:10Yep.
15:11Because the spaceship had this crystal-like motor.
15:14All full of lights and everything.
15:16And I knew if the motor looked like that,
15:18it'd have to be the kind of stuff that'd come out.
15:21You know, like smoke in a car.
15:23You got a crystal engine, that's the kind of stuff that'll come out.
15:26Don't you think?
15:28Go on, son.
15:30Well, anyway, I kept looking over there towards the school.
15:33And I saw this light.
16:11Hello?
16:12Hello?
16:40Hello?
16:41Is anybody there?
16:43Do you hear me?
16:47Are you friendly?
16:48Let me see you.
16:49Come out, please.
16:53Can you please come out?
16:58You're nice, aren't you?
16:59You're not here to hurt anybody.
17:11No.
17:39No, don't go.
17:40Please don't go.
18:07Then it went.
18:08The old dog scared it away.
18:10That's quite a story, Tim.
18:12Yes, sir.
18:13I never saw anything like it.
18:15I read a lot about flying saucers,
18:17but this is the first time in my whole life I ever saw a real one.
18:21Your whole life, huh?
18:22Yes, sir.
18:23And I bet it's the first time for you, too.
18:25What's that, son?
18:26The angel hair stuff.
18:28I bet it's the first time you ever got some real evidence, isn't it?
18:32Well, we don't know for sure yet.
18:34What are you gonna do with it?
18:36We'll send it to our lab, they'll take a look,
18:38and then they'll send us the report.
18:40Oh.
18:43Anything wrong?
18:44What you said about this just being between us,
18:47you meant it?
18:48Well, I sure did.
18:51Well, Grandpa, I mean the Colonel,
18:53I got a feeling you'd like it a lot better
18:55if I hadn't told you what I just told you.
18:57You know?
19:07Yes, Libby?
19:08I know question number one.
19:10The answer's no.
19:11The lab has not finished their run on that angel hair stuff.
19:14How much longer will they be? Do you know?
19:16Well, they're pretty well booked up,
19:18but I told them this is top priority.
19:20Good. What else?
19:21We just received a call from one of the astronomers
19:24at Ashcroft Observatory in Wisconsin.
19:26The astronomer's not the one who made the sighting.
19:29Okay. Who did?
19:30A man contacted the astronomer,
19:32said he was attacked by an alien being,
19:35but the man insists on remaining anonymous.
19:37Did you tell the astronomer that we do have problems
19:40investigating anything on a hearsay basis?
19:42Sounds like it might turn out to be more than hearsay.
19:45Just a guess, of course,
19:46but the brass are strongly suggesting
19:48that you get over there right away.
19:50Okay. We'll do that.
19:51Do we still have a contract with Ashcroft?
19:54We do. Why?
19:55All right.
19:56Set up an appointment with the astronomer at the observatory.
19:59What's his name?
20:00It's, uh, she.
20:02Paulson. Dr. Virginia Paulson.
20:04Dr. Paulson?
20:11Yes.
20:12Gatlin and Fitz, Project Blue Book.
20:14Yes, I was expecting you.
20:15How are you?
20:16You're right on time, Major Sergeant.
20:18Ma'am.
20:19As we understand it, Doctor,
20:20you're not the one who made the reported observation.
20:22No, no, I wasn't the one.
20:24But you wouldn't think that after all these years
20:27of squinting at stars,
20:28I would have seen something out of the ordinary,
20:30beside my bloodshot eye.
20:31Maybe not.
20:32Maybe not.
20:33After all, you're a trained observer.
20:35You know what you're looking at.
20:36Perhaps.
20:37But there have been trained observers
20:38who have made UFO sightings,
20:40haven't there, Major?
20:41It's been known to happen.
20:43What is this reported encounter all about?
20:45Well, this man came to us,
20:47I guess because I'm an astronomer.
20:49I never did understand
20:50why the general public relates us to UFOs and aliens.
20:54Well, like the Major said,
20:56you know the territory.
20:57Well, this man said that
20:59if he didn't tell someone,
21:00he was going to go out of his mind.
21:02He had the most incredible story.
21:04He was virtually attacked
21:06by some kind of device from a spaceship.
21:08You know, Doctor Paulson,
21:09it's very difficult for us
21:10to conduct any kind of investigation secondhand
21:12without hearing it from the principal.
21:14Well, I realize that.
21:15But he's terrified of any kind of publicity.
21:18Doctor, if you could introduce us to this man,
21:20we don't have to assure you
21:21that anything he said to us
21:22would be held in strictest confidence.
21:25Major?
21:27I don't know why we're having this discussion, Doctor.
21:30This institute holds a government contract
21:32with Project Blue Book,
21:33and I'm sure you're aware of our policies
21:35as well as we are.
21:37Is that sufficient, Mr. Biggs?
21:50Daryl Biggs?
21:52Major Gatlin?
21:53Hello.
21:54Sergeant Fitz.
21:56I heard what you said.
21:59I hope I have the assurance
22:00that I feel is necessary.
22:02You do, Mr. Biggs.
22:04I'd like to take you to the location
22:06where I had this encounter.
22:09Could we go first thing in the morning?
22:11Sure. Where is it?
22:13It's about a two-hour drive from here,
22:15a place called Devil's Lake.
22:17There's one problem.
22:19What's that, Mr. Biggs?
22:20Well, after the two-hour drive,
22:22we run out of road.
22:23Then we go on foot from there.
22:26How far?
22:27Well, it's not too bad.
22:28It's about five miles.
22:35All right, do this for me, Libby.
22:37Have one of our chemists
22:38check for any possible manufacture of that compound.
22:44Right.
22:45We're going to be out of touch
22:46for the rest of the day, then.
22:47Watch out for snakes.
22:49We don't expect to see any.
22:51And watch out for whatever you do see.
22:53See you.
23:01The lab has the angel hair
23:02broken down to identify chemicals.
23:05You're getting somewhere.
23:06Well, we know what the chemical compound is,
23:08but nobody has a hint of any earthly purpose
23:10that it could be used for.
23:12Why is it nothing can be something?
23:15Careful, Sergeant.
23:16You're talking about our means of making a living.
23:21APEK
23:44Man, I thought I'd left
23:45all this back in base training.
23:47Well, we're here.
23:48This is the place.
23:49This is where I saw everything.
23:50is where I saw everything. Like I told you, I was hunting with a couple of
23:55buddies from work and we got separated. It started to get dark and I, I just kind
24:00of lost my orientation. I don't blame you. I've been confused ever since we left the
24:04road. Yeah, I can appreciate that sergeant. One of the reasons they call this area
24:08Devil's Lake is because of so many people getting lost up here. Things are
24:13familiar and then again they're not. I've been hunting in this area since I was 15
24:18years old. I hunt with bow and arrow. I never, never carry a gun. But you were
24:23lost. Yes, Major, I was. But like I said, I had enough sense to stay put and build
24:29a campfire. I was just about to settle down until morning. That is until I heard
24:36this weird throbbing sound.
25:18The sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of
25:48the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound
26:18of the wind blowing through the trees, the sound of the wind blowing through the trees,
