After the son of a Presidential Envoy is kidnapped by a UFO in France, Gatlin and Fitz are sent by the White House to investigate.

00:00Ezekiel saw the wheel. This is the wheel he said he saw. These are unidentified flying
00:22objects that people say they are seeing now. Are they proof that we are being visited by
00:29civilizations from other stars? Or just what are they? The United States Air Force began
00:37an investigation of this high strangeness in a search for the truth. What you are about
00:43to see is part of that 20 year search.
01:43You see, we should have turned left at Bellefontaine. Now you tell me. Now look, we'll follow this road to Lorraine and then double back to Chateau Bel Air. We should only lose about a half an hour.
02:00That is a half an hour we will lose forever.
02:43We don't have much time so I'll be brief. There's a small village in France about 100 miles southwest of Paris. It's called Brebeuf. Now there have been several incidents of unusual UFO sightings.
03:12There in the past few weeks. Last night a woman reported that her husband had been abducted by a flying saucer. We want you to investigate. Why would you want us to become involved, sir? The French have excellent investigators. There's a full report here. Eyes only. Have you ever heard of Carlton Tanner? I believe so. Presidential envoy. Right. The missing man is Carlton Tanner's son. Major, your orders have come from the highest levels of authority.
03:41All I'm at liberty to tell you is that for the past six months, Carlton Tanner has been involved in delicate negotiations vital to the security of this country and Western Europe. A publicity of any kind could jeopardize that mission. Now we've been in touch with the French government. They've agreed to cooperate. You're both to work out of uniform and to keep a low profile.
04:03There's a midnight flight to Paris. Now if you'll hurry, you'll have time to digest that report and catch the flight. Listen, you'll need this. Non-military passports. Who's our contact? You'll be met at Aldi Airport by the air attaché, Colonel Ed Keller. Yes, sir. Now you men, do the best you can. Find Tanner's son or find out what this UFO abduction business is all about. Again, there's one item we cannot afford. Yes, sir. What's that?
04:31To pick up a newspaper and see it in the headlines.
05:01Good morning, Major Gatlin. Right. Sergeant Fitts. How are you? Colonel Ed Keller, air attaché, American Embassy. Good flight? Yes, sir. First trip for me, sir. Not too bad. It's going to be a working vacation, Sergeant.
05:28Well, gentlemen, we've all been briefed on the ground rules, so let's keep it simple. If you need anything, call that number. I expect you'll all be leaving for Brebeuf as soon as possible. Good. It's a good idea to rent a car and drive down. It'll be the most expedient. Yes, sir. That's what we planned. Good. I've already notified the Inspector Marchand, the local police down there, and he's waiting for you. Thank you. Good.
05:50Oh, one more thing. We're in France, not the U.S., and here the gendarmes are in charge, and they're good, and they are tough. So the key word is to work close with them. That's what we had in mind. Good. Stay out of the papers.
06:14I didn't know you spoke French. Just a little something I picked up, sir.
06:37I'm better with slow French.
06:46Yes, sir. How's this? What kind of a car would you like?
06:53Well, that's very good, ma'am. Like you say, most people speak English over here these days.
07:07Mr. Gatlin? I'm Jake Gatlin. This is Harry Fitts, sir.
07:28Well, gentlemen, it is my pleasure to welcome you to France and to our little village.
07:33We're very glad to be here, sir.
07:35My government has explained to me your mission. I can assure you that my department will do everything it can to be of assistance.
07:42That's very kind of you, sir. We would like to speak to Mrs. John Tanner as soon as possible.
07:47Certainly.
07:50Oui, Inspector.
07:52Merci.
07:56You must be very tired after your trip. Maybe first you would like to rest, eh?
07:59No, sir. First we'd like to talk to Mrs. John Tanner, and then we'd like to examine the area of the UFO sighting.
08:04UFO? Oui, oui, I understand. La voilà. That is Mrs. Tanner over there.
08:13Suivez-moi, s'il vous plaît.
08:21Madame Tanner.
08:22Inspector, avez-vous des nouvelles?
08:24Non, madame, mais voici deux Américains que je voudrais vous présenter. Ils vont essayer de trouver votre mari.
08:30Mrs. John Tanner, may I present Mr. Gatlin and Mr. Fitz.
08:35Please sit down.
08:36Merci.
08:40You are going to find my husband.
08:43We're going to try, Mrs. Tanner.
08:45I would like to believe you, but until they release him, there is nothing anyone can do.
08:50Mrs. Tanner, when was the last time you saw your husband?
08:53I don't know who they are. Beings from another world, space people. They took him.
09:02And we have no other way of getting him back.
09:05Please, Mrs. Tanner, please. These men are here to help you. They will help us find your husband. You must have faith.
09:13I'm sorry.
09:14Mrs. Tanner, can you tell us exactly what happened that night?
09:18All right.
09:21You see, John and I were on our way to the town of Chateau d'Ain.
09:26We were married there at a little church, L'Eglise Saint-François, just outside of town.
09:32We wanted to spend our first anniversary at the same inn where we spent our wedding night.
09:40We had just stopped by the side of the road to check our map when suddenly everything went bright, like it was daylight.
09:50What is it? What's happening?
10:10What's happening?
10:40What are you doing? Don't go up there, John!
11:09What's happening?
11:29What's happening?
11:58John!
12:19Don't go with him, John! Please!
12:25John, no! No!
12:53Help! Help!
12:56Please, sir, they're taking my husband. Help me, please.
13:01Wait a minute.
13:06What's going on?
13:07I don't know. I'll go see. Wait for me here.
13:11I'm coming with you.
13:12Let's go.
13:42Let's go.
14:12Let's go.
14:36Why would they take him? What would they want with him?
14:39Mrs. Tanner, did you actually see your husband board that machine?
14:43No. No, I ran while he was walking toward it. But he did. I know he did. He was moving right toward it.
14:50We understand, ma'am. We'll try and find out what happened.
14:54Do you think this is, how do you say it, a fake, a fraud? Is that what you believe?
15:02No, Mrs. Tanner, that's not what we believe. But it is possible that there's another explanation.
15:09I understand. I'm sorry, it's just that I feel so helpless, so alone. I have no one else to turn to.
15:18Have you talked to your father-in-law about this?
15:21Mr. Tanner's not the kind of man you turn to for comfort. Especially me.
15:26Are you going to stay here in town for a while?
15:28I have nowhere else to go.
15:31Inspector, we'd like to see the sighting where it took place.
15:34Of course, we can go in by machine. Excusez-moi, madame, j'entrerai en contact avec vous plus tard.
15:39Mr. Gatlin, what do you really believe happened to my husband?
15:44We don't know.
15:47What do you make of it?
16:00Four of them. Looks like tank treads. I'll get a weight reading and take some soil samples.
16:05See that road sign over there?
16:06Yes, sir, I did.
16:16May I ask you what you're doing, monsieur?
16:33Checking for magnetic variations.
16:50Anything?
16:51Je n'en sais rien.
16:52Twenty degree deviation at the signpost. Let's make sure we get a complete geological survey of this area.
16:58Moi, je suis incapable de préciser ce qui s'est passé.
17:08What do you make of these tracks?
17:10Possibly a military machine. A tank, maybe. They sometimes travel through here on their way to manoeuvres.
17:16But then again, no. They are much too large.
17:19And notice, there are four of them. They don't connect. They're not continuous the way a tank would lay them down.
17:25Quite right, monsieur. Quite right. It must have been something other than a military machine.
17:30Unless there's some new piece of hardware the French army has we don't know about.
17:33It's possible.
17:34I will inquire.
17:35Got your camera?
17:36Yes, sir.
17:37Let's take some pictures.
17:40Give me your tape. When you're finished, we'll measure them.
17:43Hold it, please. Allow me. I will assist you.
17:45All right, sir.
17:57Twenty feet, eight inches.
17:59What do you think, monsieur? Could it have been something from outer space?
18:02I mean, these tracks are quite possibly physical evidence, are they not?
18:06Maybe. Depends on what made them.
18:36Monsieur Gatlin, monsieur Fitz, le commandant Gérard, et le capitaine...
18:40Dubois.
18:41Dubois. French intelligence.
18:43We have been ordered by our government to cooperate with you in this investigation.
18:48I'm sure we can use all the help we can get.
18:50To be frank with you, monsieur, I do not understand the necessity of your being here because my department is perfectly capable of handling the situation, you know?
18:58Yes, sir. I'm sure it is. But like you, we've been ordered here by our government.
19:02Ah.
19:03And we need your help and we'd like to work with you.
19:05Qu'est-ce qu'il raconte, mon commandant?
19:07Ils veulent travailler avec nous.
19:08Ah oui?
19:09On n'a pas le choix.
19:10Ils ont l'air assez... assez compétents.
19:12Ce sont des militaires américains.
19:14D'accord. We will cooperate with you and we exchange all information, eh?
19:19Absolutely.
19:21Bon. Then we will begin by advising you of the tread markings at the so-called landing site.
19:28They are not French military.
19:30Early this morning, before you arrived, we took the measurements.
19:34And we even have photographs, sir.
19:44Currier does his job. Those samples will be in the lab at Wrightpad by morning.
19:48What about the geological survey report?
19:50Girard and Dubois are getting it for us.
19:52They know what they're doing. No doubt about that.
19:54I think they're a little uptight about our being here.
19:57But if the situation were reversed, I'm sure we'd feel the same way.
19:59Well, how's it going, gentlemen?
20:01Fine. Fine. Would you care to join us?
20:04Thanks. Some other time. My car's outside.
20:06I'll explain it to you on the way. We don't have much time.
20:16Gentlemen, I'm Carlton Tanner.
20:19Would either of you care for a cigar?
20:22No, thank you, sir. No, sir.
20:24Any progress?
20:25We've talked to your daughter-in-law.
20:27And we've examined the area of the supposed sighting.
20:29We've sent our samples back to Wright-Patterson for analysis.
20:32But we don't expect to hear of any results for a couple of days.
20:34And nothing on my son?
20:36No, Mr. Tanner. Not yet.
20:39When my son disappeared, the first thing I thought about was political kidnapping.
20:43But if that was the case, we would have heard something by now.
20:46And just for the record, I don't believe in flying saucers.
20:50So much for my daughter-in-law's wild imaginings.
20:53She's young and impressionable.
20:55Sir, what do you think happened to your son?
20:57As a father, that's a difficult question to answer.
21:02You see, my son and I never really got along.
21:07I didn't want him to marry Michelle.
21:10John has always championed the existence of UFOs and intelligent life on other planets.
21:16While I, on the other hand, have been harshly critical of that belief.
21:20Are you saying your son and his wife created all this just to hurt you?
21:25Yes. I'm afraid I am saying that.
21:46Yes?
21:48I'll get it, mate.
22:08What's he saying?
22:09I don't know. Something about the inspector.
22:18Oh.
22:36Right. Merci.
22:40John wants to see us right away. Fast.
22:43I'm sorry to have to disturb you at this time of night.
22:46I was sure you would want to be called.
22:48Messieurs.
22:49Hello.
22:50What's the matter?
22:51His brother Henri, he has disappeared.
22:53They say that he too was kidnapped by a flying saucer.
22:57When did this happen?
22:58Less than an hour ago.
22:59Would you ask them to tell us exactly what happened?
23:10He and his wife were asleep.
23:16He has been kidnapped.
23:37Rescue! Rescue!
23:39Don't let them get away!
23:41They heard his brother Henri shouting,
23:43Help me, help me. Don't let them take me.
23:52Must move! Must move!
24:13Help me, help me.
24:38They could see nothing, but Dari was gone.
24:40We know he was taken like the other guy.
24:51Did you see an astronaut?
24:53We saw lights. We heard the noise of the machines.
25:10He's gone.
25:25Commander!
25:29Look at those tracks.
25:40Doesn't seem that would be too unusual around here.
25:43Except that someone went to the trouble to try to brush those away.
25:46Inspector, will you ask him if there's an electrical outlet around?
25:54He says that there is an outlet about 30 meters down.
25:58He uses it for an irrigation pump.
26:00I'm going to take a look.
26:02Now ask him if he has a DC generator.
26:05What have you got?
26:07Not sure. Looks like a piece of carbon from an arc light.
26:12He owns a small portable generator, but he does not think that it is working.
26:19I found this near the electrical outlet over there.
26:22You are thinking the same thing we are.
26:24To me it has all the appearance of a fake.
26:26Suppose we talk to the brother.
26:28I think it's a good idea.
26:30Harry, keep checking. Let's see what else we can come up with.
26:32Yes, sir.
26:33Do you want to work with the sergeants?
26:35Oui, mon commandant.
26:39Inspector, we'd like to know a little bit more about the two brothers.
26:43I can tell that you are somewhat suspicious in this matter.
26:47It's the nature of this business.
26:49And you, you concur?
26:51Totally agree.
26:54The older brother and I, we have been friends for many years.
26:58I don't believe that he would lie.
27:00We're not ready to say that.
27:03But if you do, you will let me tell him, please?
27:08Of course.
27:09A fake?
27:11Why?
27:12He loves his brother.
27:18I asked him if his brother loves him.
27:27Of course.
27:28But in my opinion, the whole thing is a fake.
27:31It is, as you say, a hoax.
27:33The younger brother is trying to prove something to the older brother.
27:37Maybe.
27:38They're both farmers.
27:39Either one of them could have repaired a generator.
27:42And they could always find an arc light someplace.
27:45You know something? You and I work with the same principles.
27:48Examine and re-examine, take nothing for granted.
27:51Until you find the truth.
27:53I like that.
27:54Is there any other way?
27:55You know something?
27:57I am going to suggest that Dubois and I will check the nearest theatrical rental company.
28:04That's a good idea. Let's do that, if you don't mind.
28:06What is it about?
28:08We'll send it to the costume store.
28:10Yes, good idea.
28:11One thing's still not clear in my mind.
28:13What is that?
28:14In your opinion, you say one brother's trying to prove something to the other.
28:17That is correct.
28:18You know them that well? I mean, you've done a background check on them?
28:21I'm sure we have done nothing.
28:23To me, it is quite simple.
28:25Oh, how's that?
28:26If you're taking a look, a good look, at the older brother's wife.
28:37Mrs. Tanner?
28:42There's no more reason for me to be here.
28:45I'm going back to Paris to be with my family.
28:47Why are you leaving, ma'am?
28:50I no longer care for what Mr. Tanner has to say.
28:53What did he say to you?
28:54I believe it is his opinion that John and I made up this whole story just to hurt him.
28:58Did he tell you that? In those words?
29:01No.
29:02But I feel it.
29:04I know how he thinks about John, because John believes in such things.
29:08Such things as what, ma'am?
29:09Space machines, people from other stars.
29:12A great many people believe in those things.
29:14Well, Mr. Tanner does not.
29:16And I know he thinks that John and I lied about what we saw.
29:20Is that what you think also?
29:22No, Mrs. Tanner, that's not what we believe.
29:25And we'd like for you to stay here until after we complete our investigation.
29:28Will you do that?
29:30Mr. Gatlin, I have told you everything.
29:34It was the truth.
29:36You must believe that.
29:38We could not make up such a story.
29:40All right, Mrs. Tanner.
29:42Will you stay?
29:45Yes, all right. I will stay.
29:53I have known the Reno brothers for 20 years.
29:57He says, excuse me, he says that he has known the brothers Reno for 20 years.
30:03Yes.
30:05How is that?
30:07Yes.
30:08They are the most sincere, the most honest in the country, in the Loiret.
30:13There are no people like them. It's perfect.
30:15There are no more honest men in the whole Loiret province.
30:19What about the younger brother?
30:21What do you think of Henry?
30:23He is a very fine man, you know. He treats women kindly.
30:29He is a very smart man, but he has an eye for the women.
30:33Ask him if he saw or heard anything three nights ago.
30:36Grandfather, did you see or hear anything strange three nights ago?
30:41No.
30:42Mr. Inspector, I can tell you that I did not hear anything strange three nights ago.
30:48Three nights ago, I did not hear anything.
30:51Yes, that's right.
30:53Two days ago, during the night, I heard a noise.
31:02It was a noise. It was great.
31:08Three nights ago, he saw nothing, but two nights ago, he did.
31:13You must know that I go to bed very early.
31:18I go to bed very early, and it is this noise that will wake me up.
31:22It was horrible.
31:25He goes to sleep very early, but two nights ago, he was awakened by a very loud noise.
31:37Help! Help!
31:39I was not taken away!
31:42He heard Henry's voice shouting, Help me! Help me! Don't let them take me!
31:46Did you see that night the older brother, Claude?
31:50He was going to the market by car before it got dark.
31:55No, no.
31:56During the night.
31:57I did not see Claude.
31:59He did not see Claude that night, but he had seen him earlier driving off to the market.
32:06That night, I saw him kissing the devil.
32:11He saw her kiss the devil that night.
32:21She would not have found me if she had not failed everything.
32:25He says we never would have found them if she had not weakened and told us.
32:29I thought she loved me.
32:32And all along, he thought she loved him.
32:39And so it all comes to this.
32:41Henri went to the city of Rouen.
32:43There, he rented an arc light, the material to change the color,
32:47and the tape recorder to create the sound of the machine taking off.
32:51Where did he get the sound? What did he use?
32:53He bought a recording of a jet aeroplane.
32:56He recorded that on a tape recorder, and he played it backwards.
32:59Ingenuity.
33:04And so it went.
33:06First, with the help of his brother's wife, they repaired the broken generator.
33:14And they hid it some distance away from the farmhouse so the brother Claude could not see or hear it.
33:23Then they hid the wagon out in the woods.
33:30Then they unloaded the arc light and the gelatin material to change the color of the lights.
33:45Then, to both of them, they attempted to wipe away the impressions made by the wagon wheels.
33:52Without much success, as we know.
33:55Then they unloaded the tape recorder.
34:09Next, the ballet tights.
34:11They were originally beige, but Madame Renault here, she dyed them red.
34:15And Henri slipped them on.
34:17And the ruse was ready to rehearse before the part was played.
34:21And the ruse was ready to rehearse before the part was played out.
34:52Au secours! Au secours!
34:55Ne la laissez pas m'emmener!
35:04That was the rehearsal.
35:06And we have confirmation on that from the old man who lives next door to Henri and Claude.
35:10All that remained was to wait until the next night to play the performance for Claude.
35:18And we probably know why, but I'd like to hear him say it.
35:21Oh, he has already admitted everything.
35:23He thought that if he could convince everyone that he was taken away in a space machine,
35:28he and Madame Renault here could run off and live happily ever after.
35:36She'd just run off and leave Claude, is that it?
35:39That was the plan.
35:40But they made the impossible possible.
35:43She'd just run off and leave Claude, is that it?
35:45That was the plan.
35:46But they made the eternal mistake.
35:48They broke the tenth commandment.
36:06We have another report on a sighting.
36:08Busy today, isn't it?
36:09This sighting took place three days ago.
36:11The individual has just now decided to come forward.
36:19He wanted to know when his brother wished to see him.
36:22What did you tell him?
36:23When he gets married, not before, Raoul.
36:41Yes.
37:02His name is Emile Vernoux.
37:03What do you want to ask him?
37:04Why did he want us to come out here?
37:12Because he wanted us to see the exact place where it occurred.
37:15What was he doing the night of the incident?
37:17And how many passengers did he have?
37:34He was returning to the depot after his run and there were no passengers aboard.
37:38Did you ask him to tell us exactly what he saw?
37:41Tell us, please, exactly what you saw.
37:44I left Chateaublaire to go to Chartres.
37:50I went to the garage to check the bus for the night.
38:10The road was very strangely lighted.
38:41The night before
39:07First he saw the big space machine.
39:10Then he saw the creature dressed in red.
39:12Then he saw Henri Renault.
39:40Then he saw John Tanner appear in the space machine.
39:53Monsieur Tanner walked out of the machine and moved toward Henri.
39:57Then John Tanner indicated to Henri that he should go with him into the space machine.
40:14Both of the men walked toward the machine and went inside.
40:27The bus driver does not speak any English, so let me say at this point.
40:36He is trying to help Henri because he is his best friend.
40:42You must understand that people in these provinces are very close to each other.
40:47And sometimes they tell a small lie.
40:50But one thing is certain.
40:52We know he doesn't tell the truth about Henri.
40:56But what of Monsieur Tanner?
41:11I had never seen such a thing in my life.
41:24Even if I lived to be 100 years old, I would never forget that night.
41:42We know he is half wrong.
41:44We know where Henri is, don't we?
41:46Yes, but Monsieur Tanner, where is he?
41:58Bonjour, Monsieur.
41:59Bonjour.
42:00We have located John Tanner.
42:02Where?
42:03Dubois and I were attempting to analyze the situation.
42:06If Madame and Monsieur John Tanner were in Brebeu, and if they were there for the reason of celebrating their wedding anniversary,
42:14there would only be one place they would be going to.
42:17Where is that?
42:18The church in which they were married.
42:20The church of Saint-François in Brebeu.
42:22Good thinking.
42:23Is that where Tanner is?
42:25Indeed.
42:26But it is not that simple.
42:28True.
42:29John Tanner is in the church, but you cannot see him.
42:32How's that?
42:33The priest has given him sanctuary.
42:36Good.
42:43Hello.
42:48You know, I think it is best if you two talk to the priest.
42:52I agree.
42:53You try it without success.
42:54His father speaks English.
42:56Perhaps he will talk to you.
43:07Yes?
43:08Father, this is Sergeant Harry Fitz.
43:10I'm Major Jake Gatlin, United States Air Force.
43:13And you are here about this unidentified flying object business.
43:18And you would like to speak to young John Tanner?
43:22That's right, Father.
43:24John Tanner is a very troubled man.
43:27He has asked for and been given sanctuary in this house of God.
43:33We understand.
43:35What you may not know is, under canon law,
43:40you cannot enter for the purpose of removing young Tanner from this holy place.
43:46That's not our intent, Father.
43:47We just want to talk to him.
43:49Oh, well, that is entirely up to him.
43:52He has a wife that's very concerned about his well-being.
43:56She doesn't know he's here.
43:58That's all right, Father.
43:59I'll see them.
44:02Very well.
44:03You may enter.
44:29This was the only place that I could come to.
44:33This is Harry Fitz.
44:35My name's Gatlin.
44:37Yes, I heard.
44:39You're with the Air Force.
44:43How is Michelle?
44:44Is she all right?
44:45Yes, sir, she's fine.
44:47But she's worried about you.
44:53I love her.
44:55I love her very much.
44:58Why don't you come along with us?
44:59You and your wife can tell us exactly what happened that night.
45:03No, I won't do that.
45:09It would help clear up a great many things.
45:12Not really.
45:14All right.
45:16That's as far as we can take it.
45:21But you have talked with Michelle.
45:24We have.
45:26Then believe her as you would me.
45:29We...
45:31We saw that machine.
45:36She only ran because she was afraid.
45:40She shouldn't have been.
45:44Please tell her that I'm safe now.
45:47All right.
45:49We'll do that.
45:59Gentleman.
46:03He is troubled.
46:05But he will be fine.
46:07You know, in this highly complicated world we find ourselves living in,
46:13every so often a man reaches out.
46:18He reaches out and is touched.
46:21A touch may be as gentle as a butterfly's wing.
46:25But he is touched.
46:28Make no mistake.
46:29And he cannot comprehend why it was he who was selected.
46:35And he becomes troubled and puzzled at one and the same time.
46:40But he thinks about it for a while.
46:43A good long while.
46:45He wonders why he was not permitted to return that touch.
46:52To be grateful.
46:54But suddenly it all becomes very clear.
46:58There is nothing to return.
47:00Nothing to give back.
47:03It was, after all, a gift.
47:54THE END
