00:01:50When a patrolman is assassinated on a Manhattan street,
00:01:53it can get to be real big news real fast.
00:01:56Especially if he's from a family of cops, young, white,
00:02:00protecting a high-profile witness in a well-heeled part of town.
00:02:05When a cop dies in the line of duty in the city of New York
00:02:08under circumstances like that,
00:02:10you'd be surprised who shows up at his funeral.
00:02:15Are you kidding me? George Bush was there?
00:02:17Well, right there speaking to me.
00:02:19Then he folded the casket flag,
00:02:22and then old George himself handed it to the family.
00:02:25Grass really must have pulled a lot of strings for this one.
00:02:28My partner, Dan Riley, and I
00:02:30represent our patrol sector at funeral services.
00:02:33When it's over, the lieutenant collects the black armbands
00:02:36and puts them back in the file cabinet.
00:02:39The tragedy of this story is
00:02:41they won't even have time to gather dust.
00:02:43
00:02:47You see, this story is not about Manhattan
00:02:50or big cases or presidents.
00:02:52It's about this side of the river, Brooklyn.
00:02:56It's about the housing projects of Brooklyn
00:02:58and two cops who walk a beat there.
00:03:01I did the same thing myself before I made detective,
00:03:03and I'm here to tell you
00:03:05that Robert Dayton and Raymond Williamson
00:03:07are stand-up guys in a job
00:03:09that's always trying to knock you down.
00:03:11Oh, yeah, now, this here is a pretty sight.
00:03:15I thought the detective shut down this crack house
00:03:17just a little while ago.
00:03:18What do you want, the summit stats, too?
00:03:21I'm gonna check this guy out.
00:03:23
00:03:27Can you believe this? Look.
00:03:29Homeboy's got a piece in his belt.
00:03:32He doesn't even see us here.
00:03:34Headed for the lobby of 443 Blackwell, it looks like.
00:03:37Swing around and see if they catch us.

00:04:46He's got a gun! He's got a gun!
00:04:49Get up. Get up.
00:04:52I got it. I got it.
00:04:56Yo, it's a toy.
00:04:58Man, it ain't real.
00:05:02What are you, stupid? Huh?
00:05:05Hey, yo, McGarrett, better luck next time, man.
00:05:08Peace out, brother.
00:05:11He threw out that rock somewhere inside.
00:05:13Most likely. Anyway, thanks for the backup, guys.
00:05:16Backup? We taste them into you.
00:05:18What are you guys working down here?
00:05:20Homicide. What else?
00:05:22Get a load of this, will you?
00:05:24About two years ago, the toy makers started painting
00:05:26the barrels of these things orange, see?
00:05:28So a cop could tell if the kid was carrying a toy.
00:05:31And the bad guys started painting the real guns orange
00:05:33to fool the cops, and then the kids started painting
00:05:35over the orange, and they wanted the real thing.
00:05:37I don't know. Go figure.
00:05:39After 22 years, I stopped trying to figure.
00:05:4222 years. You must be ready to leave.
00:05:45Are you kidding me, this guy?
00:05:47Grass has been trying to get him to leave
00:05:49for God knows how long. As a matter of fact,
00:05:51I have a theory that you killed the last hitman
00:05:53they sent out.
00:05:55Yeah, right between the eyes.
00:05:58No, I'm ready. I'm going soon.
00:06:00I can still do the job I did when I was young,
00:06:02but the words change, you know?
00:06:05When I started in housing,
00:06:07they used to call us grass cops.
00:06:10Keeping people off the lawns, that was the job.
00:06:14These are the new federally funded
00:06:16Kentucky bluegrass lawns, man.
00:06:18They were nice, I remember.
00:06:20You grew up in the houses?
00:06:22We both did.
00:06:24You know.
00:06:26You know, I was talking to this guy I know
00:06:28does maintenance up there, putting down new roofs.
00:06:31It's like archaeology, Danny, he tells me.
00:06:34You know, at the bottom, they got taught from the 60s.
00:06:37Roach clips, hash pipes, afro picks.
00:06:40Then the 70s, junky needles works.
00:06:43Then Coke spoons, and now the Reagan era.
00:06:47Crack vials and 9mm shells.
00:06:50Ain't exactly the March of Civilization.
00:06:57No, they don't need grass cops anymore.
00:07:00Nobody comes out on the grass.
00:07:02They make too good a target.
00:07:05Later.
00:07:14And Mr. Franklin, I see you've been employed
00:07:17with the Westchester Coach Works for 3 months.
00:07:21And before that,
00:07:24there is quite a gap in your employment record here from...
00:07:28I was in prison.
00:07:31Oh, I see.
00:07:33Look, it was something stupid I did when I was younger.
00:07:38Look, ma'am, I really, really need this car.
00:07:41Okay, so I don't miss days at work.
00:07:44That shouldn't be a problem, should it?
00:07:50Everybody should get a second chance.
00:07:53All the doors shouldn't close on a young man
00:07:56because he made a bad choice once.
00:07:58He's a 25, living in that place.
00:08:00He's got a lot of choices left to make.
00:08:03Who's he gonna be? Who's he gonna be with?
00:08:06What's he gonna do when they call his name?
00:08:10Mr. Justice Butler, what's happening?
00:08:13You're violating unwritten rules, little brother.
00:08:15Oh, yeah, what's that?
00:08:17It's me that's supposed to have the freshest import in the hood
00:08:20and the finest lady, you know what I'm saying?
00:08:23Check it out.
00:08:25Later, buddy. All right, now.
00:08:29What's up, man?
00:08:31Who the hell was that?
00:08:33That's Justice, one of my brother's friends.
00:08:36Stay away from your brother's friends.
00:08:38They're nothing but trouble.
00:08:40What am I gonna do, baby?
00:08:42The man pulls up on the street and calls out my name?
00:08:45No, he did not call your name. He called somebody else.
00:08:48All right. Come on.
00:08:50You're right.
00:08:54Come on, man.
00:08:56Cover up that scrawny body.
00:08:58She's waiting for us right outside.
00:09:00You finally got some play, huh?
00:09:02All right, who is this mystery woman?
00:09:04How do you see her?
00:09:06She better be fine.
00:09:11Whoo!
00:09:13Oh, I see. This is your ride.
00:09:16Oh, my!
00:09:18Boarding passes out as you approach the gate, ladies and gentlemen.
00:09:21Okay. Come on.
00:09:25Whoo!
00:09:27Oh, man.
00:09:29Feel this thing.
00:09:31You know how much I wanted one of these when I was a kid?
00:09:33Do you have any idea?
00:09:35This is great. It's a nice machine, man. Very nice.
00:09:37Then I just walk in, buy it, drive it away.
00:09:40You walk in and you buy it.
00:09:42Does that make you feel like an adult, man?
00:09:44Oh, hell no. I'm 16 again.
00:09:46So where are we going, man?
00:09:48Back to those old streets.
00:09:50Show them a neighborhood island boy can do good, you know.
00:09:54Central Shores, westbound.
00:09:56Officer Dayton in pursuit of his lost youth.
00:09:58Whoo!
00:10:04Hey, young car. My man.
00:10:06Hey, man, what you doing around my wheel?
00:10:08Say, man, it's just me.
00:10:10Just old razor from the block, you know.
00:10:13Thought I'd polish it up a little bit, make a dollar.
00:10:16What you say?
00:10:19All right.
00:10:21My man.
00:10:34Hey, little brother.
00:10:36Can't nobody but Tyson knock out a four-door.
00:10:39Something wrong with your new wheels?
00:10:42No, man.
00:10:44Come on, Prince, take a ride around with me.
00:10:47See you.
00:10:49Auntie.
00:10:55So how's King?
00:10:57How's Attica?
00:10:59Yeah.
00:11:02That's some heavy time you're doing, man.
00:11:05I always did like your brother.
00:11:10King and me was tight.
00:11:12Like family.
00:11:15And now here come the Prince.
00:11:18I got to stop by one of my businesses.
00:11:20You want to ride along?
00:11:22You got to get back to your job.
00:11:25All right.
00:11:27Bye.
00:11:32We can't stop the beat.
00:11:36We can't stop the beat.
00:11:39We can't stop the beat.
00:12:00We can't stop the beat.
00:12:04We can't stop the beat.
00:12:08We can't stop the beat.
00:12:32There's some problems with the workers
00:12:34tucking down a rock or two.
00:12:36solution.
00:12:37Rahim.
00:12:43Yo.
00:12:44Yeah?
00:12:45I don't know, man.
00:12:47You're doing family business here.
00:12:4825 grand a day, business, my brother.
00:12:51And that's just from one spot.
00:12:54$25,000?
00:12:55And for what?
00:12:57Selling this dish to folks that's
00:12:58going to kill themselves anyway.
00:13:00So instead of some natty, dreadlock island mango
00:13:05picker making the money, it's me and Rahim.
00:13:10Maybe even you.
00:13:17Nah.
00:13:19Not me, man.
00:13:21Hate all these dish stuff fools stacking around.
00:13:25Porn.
00:13:27Messing up the hood.
00:13:28You don't hate them anymore than me, my brother.
00:13:30Just the business.
00:13:31Just the business.
00:13:33Everybody say that, just the business.
00:13:35Slave traders say that.
00:13:38Oh, I forgot you got that high-paying job,
00:13:40don't you, my brother?
00:13:41What do you do?
00:13:41Flip burgers for the clown?
00:13:44No, man.
00:13:45I don't do nothing.
00:13:46I got laid off today.
00:13:47That's the drill, smarty.
00:13:50Let me give you a little something to get you by.
00:13:53No, I don't need nothing.
00:13:55No, thanks, man.
00:13:57It's there if you need it, precious.
00:14:01It's there.
00:14:04Fruit over.
00:14:05Get a potato plate and I will be right back.
00:14:10Say, Pop, you better turn this down or you're gonna
00:14:13burn up all this food in here.
00:14:15Well, you know how your mother liked things real hot.
00:14:18That's you. You like it hot.
00:14:19Reminds you of your firefighting days.
00:14:21You feel all that steam on your face.
00:14:23You bring back memories.
00:14:24I guess you're right.
00:14:26I do.
00:14:26Raymond had such a nice girl.
00:14:28Oh, yes.
00:14:29That was great.
00:14:30But I never see you with a girl.
00:14:32Do you like girls, Robert?
00:14:33Hey, I like girls just fine.
00:14:35I love coming to your family gatherings.
00:14:37When I have a date, I like something
00:14:39a little more romantic.
00:14:40And I have a few more romantic places to go in New York City.
00:14:43You'll forgive me for saying so.
00:14:45You're always with a different girl, Raymond tells me.
00:14:48I think you're kind of a playboy, eh?
00:14:50Oh, Mrs. W, you're gonna call me names,
00:14:52you should call me names I don't like.
00:15:02Woo!
00:15:03Yeah!
00:15:04You are, yeah, you are.
00:15:06You are, yeah, you are.
00:15:08You are, yeah, you are.
00:15:10You are, yeah, you are.
00:15:13Come get, get a piece of this.
00:15:21I get me love.
00:15:23Check it out.
00:15:24Yo, Prince.
00:15:25What's up, man?
00:15:26This is my man.
00:15:27What's up?
00:15:28Nice to meet you, man.
00:15:29Nice to meet you.
00:15:31Yeah.
00:15:33Fabulous coordination.
00:15:36She type my name Wanda, man.
00:15:38Anything goes.
00:15:39You know what I'm saying?
00:15:40Yeah.
00:15:43So anyway, man, you own this place?
00:15:44For the night.
00:15:45I bought it out.
00:15:46A little party with my friends.
00:15:49Speaking of which, you said you'd make me a loan.
00:15:52Yeah.
00:15:54Yeah, I know, Prince, but check it out.
00:15:56If I loan you, man, you got to pay me back.
00:15:59And if you don't, well, like I said, man,
00:16:02I'd rather have you as one of my partners
00:16:04than one of these chumps I got to squeeze.
00:16:07Like, what would I be doing?
00:16:08Mechanical stuff.
00:16:10Cars, joints, rent, like an office manager.
00:16:13Three grand a week.
00:16:15Plus you take a spot once a month.
00:16:17Take a spot?
00:16:19You get to take from a spot one day.
00:16:2220, 30 grand is for you.
00:16:24And no French fry geese in your hair, neither.
00:16:30He was always good with numbers and machines, Prince.
00:16:33King said so.
00:16:35I got muscle.
00:16:36I need a man with skills.
00:16:38Yo, just a minute.
00:16:40Yo, Raheem, how did this chump get in here?
00:16:43Just a minute.
00:16:44Man, I got this for you.
00:16:46Fully approved.
00:16:48New stuff.
00:16:49Real light and real thin, see?
00:16:51Get him the hell out of here.
00:16:56Yo, hold on.
00:16:59Yo, Prince, you want it, man?
00:17:01Hey, now, wait, wait.
00:17:02You said just the mechanical stuff.
00:17:04Yeah, that's right.
00:17:05There's a lot of crazy brothers out there
00:17:07smoking for no beef at all.
00:17:08Man, that thing's so thin,
00:17:09it wouldn't stop your mama's kiss.
00:17:11Get the hell out of here.
00:17:12No, man.
00:17:13Get him out of here.
00:17:14Get your hands off me.
00:17:16It worked.
00:17:17Maybe I should just check it out.
00:17:19You think you're strong enough to stop this, pipehead?
00:17:22No, man, please.
00:17:23Please, man.
00:17:24Wouldn't give my man Prince no garage sale.
00:17:26No, Desmond.
00:17:27Please, man, don't shoot me, man.
00:17:37Damn, man, you shot him!
00:17:42Quality control.
00:17:44It's very important.
00:17:50Whoo-hoo!
00:17:52It worked!
00:17:55It worked!
00:18:00Give this garbage a half-dozen rocks
00:18:02and get him out of here.
00:18:18It's like it was tailor-made.
00:18:24All right.
00:18:30But no jobs?
00:18:32Nope.
00:18:33Not even in Atlantic City?
00:18:35It's pretty tight all over, babe.
00:18:37Well, except for one little slot machine owned by Mr. Trump.
00:18:43Hey, come on, enjoy it, all right?
00:18:45Daddy's home.
00:18:48Don't let anybody sell you the idea
00:18:50that running a crack gang
00:18:52is some great feat of business skill.
00:18:54It's not a business, and it don't take any real brains.
00:18:57You need a little money,
00:18:59you need somebody who knows the recipe,
00:19:01you need a recipe,
00:19:03you need a little money,
00:19:05you need a little money,
00:19:07you need a little money,
00:19:09you need a little money,
00:19:11you need a little money,
00:19:13you need a little money,
00:19:15you need a little money,
00:19:17you need a little money,
00:19:19you need a little money,
00:19:21you need a little money,
00:19:23you need a little money...
00:19:25And that's the problem.
00:19:27Everybody tries.
00:19:45Justice Butler and his crack gang had one problem in particular, a trigger-happy Jamaican
00:20:02named Supreme.
00:20:03But hey, you've seen enough movies, you've watched enough TV, you know the solution to
00:20:08this problem.
00:20:09All you gotta do is cross a few state lines in a generally southern direction.
00:20:13We do know that converts to automatic.
00:20:15Yeah, we got people that do that already.
00:20:17Good, then we won't have to do it.
00:20:20The bigger y'all get, the more we sell.
00:20:23Good for everybody.
00:20:32Supreme boys be running like rabbits, man.
00:20:35Hollering, dreadlocks flying.
00:20:37Excellent!
00:20:38That's what it's all about, squire.
00:20:40We can't be letting nobody diss the organization, you know what I mean?
00:20:45It don't matter if you shoot a dozen rounds or you steal a dozen vials.
00:20:50You gotta pay.
00:20:52You know what I mean?
00:20:55You steal from justice, justice come for you.
00:20:58Yo, yo, Raheem, man.
00:21:01It was only ten rocks.
00:21:02I'm good for it.
00:21:06I'll pay it back, man.
00:21:08You know me.
00:21:10You brought me into this show.
00:21:11That's why it's me that takes you out.
00:21:13You take me out?
00:21:15Listen to you, man.
00:21:17You're that Kofi.
00:21:18You're a tourist.
00:21:19You talk about us being brothers.
00:21:21You gonna kill me for 50 bucks?
00:21:24Don't it mean nothing to you, man?
00:21:27Don't it mean nothing?
00:21:35Who says the streets are reality?
00:21:38They call the cops Philo.
00:21:40They call detectives McGarrett.
00:21:42A fresh batch of crackers call an episode.
00:21:45Except, one of these episodes has a happy ending.
00:21:54That's my son, Mikey Harris.
00:21:57He's not here.
00:21:59He's been gone almost two days now.
00:22:02And how old is he, ma'am?
00:22:04He's 12.
00:22:05Almost 13.
00:22:08Okay, well, we're gonna do our best to find him, all right?
00:22:14Isn't that the kid over on Blackwell?
00:22:16Yeah, that's the one.
00:22:20Some fresh sneakers, Mikey. Where you get them?
00:22:22I bought them in the store. You know what I'm saying?
00:22:24Yeah, I know what you're saying.
00:22:26You doing drugs, little brother?
00:22:27Yeah, come on, man.
00:22:28I ain't gonna grow up to be no crackhead.
00:22:30Oh, that's good.
00:22:32So what you gonna grow up to be?
00:22:33I'm gonna be somebody with something.
00:22:35You know what I'm saying?
00:22:36You know what I'm saying?
00:22:37Strive for justice. Big time, kid.
00:22:39Big time?
00:22:40Yeah.
00:22:41Sound maybe like hard time.
00:22:43Like Attica time.
00:22:45I ain't going to no Attica, man. I'm only 12.
00:22:47Yeah, what's 12 plus 6?
00:22:50Come on, little brother. You better than this.
00:22:54Mikey, where have you been?
00:22:57Oh, God.
00:22:58I was so worried about you.
00:23:00Are you all right?
00:23:01I had to save you.
00:23:04Baby, are you all right?
00:23:05I have been looking everywhere for you.
00:23:07You see that?
00:23:09Kissing and hugging him like he's some baby or something.
00:23:11When I think of what my old man had done,
00:23:13if I stayed out two nights in a row at that age,
00:23:15my father would have been upside my head.
00:23:18Man, your mom's a piece of work, too.
00:23:20Why you gotta talk about my mom?
00:23:21I love your mother.
00:23:22You better love my mother.
00:23:23She won't rest until I got a dozen kids all calling me daddy.
00:23:25You planning a small family?
00:23:27Look, look, look.
00:23:28Let's do what you want. This one or you want that one?
00:23:30I'll take that one.
00:23:34Yeah, that man Prince.
00:23:36Guess what you ordered?
00:23:37Two plain Janes.
00:23:40Both registered in my name.
00:23:45Somebody's calling you, boy.
00:23:4862,000?
00:23:50That dish roster ripped us off for 60 big?
00:23:53What's that?
00:23:54Supreme just ambushed us for wanting to run.
00:23:56The Linwood spot?
00:23:57A whole weekend plus a dish load of products
00:23:59swiped right out of the car?
00:24:01I want Supreme in the ground.
00:24:03I want his brains in a sack around my neck.
00:24:06Supreme get his hair done Saturdays
00:24:08at that place over on Kapasi.
00:24:10Rudy, magic. Your sister owns him.
00:24:12Take him out, Raheem.
00:24:13You and two.
00:24:14Prince, set him up.
00:24:16Whatever he needs.
00:24:18One clean car.
00:24:20Yeah, yeah, I got him today.
00:24:22Molotov, cocktails, and a couple of wannabes to throw.
00:24:26Living on the edge.
00:24:28Looking over your shoulder.
00:24:30I'm a maniac.
00:24:31When I react, I attack.
00:24:33With a baseball bat.
00:24:35With intentions to crack.
00:24:37Skulls and ribs.
00:24:38Leaving mortal remains.
00:24:40Temporary insanity.
00:24:41I'm forever deranged.
00:24:44Supreme!
00:24:45Yo, Supreme!
00:24:47Show your ugly face!
00:24:49He is not here.
00:24:50Now you get out of my store!
00:24:52Get out!
00:24:55Stop!
00:25:22Raheem!
00:25:26Hey!
00:25:40Big body.
00:25:42Big body.
00:25:48Damn!
00:25:56You guys did what?
00:25:57Took them all down.
00:25:59Had to.
00:26:00How many?
00:26:01I don't know.
00:26:02Four or five inside in those pumps on the street.
00:26:05You killed the wannabes?
00:26:07What the hell for?
00:26:08They messed up.
00:26:10Seven bodies.
00:26:12Seven bodies and none of them the one you were sent to take out.
00:26:15You got the message.
00:26:16What?
00:26:17Supreme got the message.
00:26:19We got one body.
00:26:21We got one body.
00:26:22Supreme got the message.
00:26:24We got one more string to tie.
00:26:26What's that?
00:26:27This truck driver saw the car close up.
00:26:28Must have seen the license, too.
00:26:30Featured a cop's name.
00:26:32You already told the cops.
00:26:34I got it covered.
00:26:35Bought the cars from the middle man.
00:26:37What if the middle man told them?
00:26:39He won't.
00:26:44That's your area, Prince.
00:26:45You make sure.
00:26:47Rahim, help him out.
00:27:17If your limbs say no, that's attributable to fire.
00:27:35They were all shot multiple times.
00:27:38You want to lay it out?
00:27:40No, you go ahead.
00:27:42This shop is owned by the sister of a crack dealer,
00:27:45a street named Supreme.
00:27:47A rival gang, a new one, wants to scare them off.
00:27:51One car, two shooters, two lookouts with firebombs.
00:27:57At 1132, they come in.
00:27:59No Supreme.
00:28:02Something happens.
00:28:03Something is said.
00:28:05They open fire with automatic weapons.
00:28:09What do you mean, something happens?
00:28:12What do you want me to do to start the shooting?
00:28:17Nothing happened yet, Dan.
00:28:19Looking for a reason for this.
00:28:21They came in here looking for a guy that couldn't find him,
00:28:23so they decided to shoot up everything that moves.
00:28:26You want a reason?
00:28:28I'll give you a reason.
00:28:32Because it felt good.
00:28:35Because they had nothing better to do
00:28:37when they woke up this morning.
00:28:39Packed up, greedy, self-satisfying, motherless animals.
00:28:44Come on, Vic.
00:28:46You look me in the eye, Dan.
00:28:48You look me in the eye and you tell me there's a reason for this.
00:28:52Damn it, Vic, you're ruining my day.
00:29:27God, no!
00:29:29No, no, no!
00:29:50You got something for me, kid?
00:29:53Me and Prince.
00:29:55You got something for me to tell you, brother?
00:30:05Oh, Prince, man.
00:30:07This ain't necessary.
00:30:10Come on, Prince, man.
00:30:12We go back.
00:30:14I know your daddy.
00:30:18Prince.
00:30:20Prince.
00:30:51There's two basic rules of survival in this job.
00:30:55First, you got to learn to take small bites.
00:30:57Too much disgust and pain at one time
00:30:59turns to poison in your gut.
00:31:01And second, you learn to keep it to yourself.
00:31:04Nobody wants to hear about it.
00:31:06Maybe a partner or maybe a wife, you could tell.
00:31:09But a wife could leave you,
00:31:11and a partner has got his own belly full.
00:31:14So I admit, on the Beauty Paula case,
00:31:16I broke both rules.
00:31:18I took too big a bite, and I couldn't keep it down.
00:31:34Ray maybe spoke to him.
00:31:36Yeah, he was talking some craziness
00:31:38about making it big selling crack.
00:31:40Did he mention any names?
00:31:43He said something about some dude,
00:31:45being strapped for justice.
00:31:47Justice? What is that?
00:31:49What is that, some stupid street name?
00:31:51Yeah, maybe so.
00:31:53Did you inform the kid's mother
00:31:55that her son was part of a hit team?
00:31:57I didn't think it was an appropriate time,
00:31:59but I guess you can go ahead and do that.
00:32:01Believe it.
00:32:03And the body we found in the playground,
00:32:05was he connected to?
00:32:07Getaway car was registered to him.
00:32:09Covering their tracks.
00:32:11Thanks, but we already thought about that.
00:32:13Come on, Vic.
00:32:15Hey, yo, yo, what's your problem, man?
00:32:17What's my problem?
00:32:19What is your problem, man?
00:32:21I'm gonna tell you what my problem is.
00:32:23I am sick and tired of being a lousy zookeeper around here.
00:32:26And I'll tell you something else.
00:32:28The people that did this shooting, they're animals.
00:32:30No, no, they're less than animals.
00:32:32Because nothing like this ever happened around here before.
00:32:35I had a great uncle.
00:32:37He was a close friend of mine.
00:32:39I had a great uncle. He was a cousin of ours.
00:32:41Made guy. Spent his whole life
00:32:43not three blocks away from this beauty magic location.
00:32:46Did four times on the mattresses.
00:32:48And nothing, I mean nothing like this ever happened.
00:32:51In those days, the guy wanted to get popped.
00:32:53Bing, he got popped.
00:32:55Not his whole family.
00:32:57Not his hairdresser or her brother-in-law.
00:33:01In those days, people cared about people.
00:33:03People were like family.
00:33:05Oh, because Don Corleone was cool, huh?
00:33:07And make killing okay.
00:33:09Let me tell you something.
00:33:11It wasn't only Italians.
00:33:13We had Poles, we had Russians, Jews.
00:33:15It's a matter of fact.
00:33:17You want to know something?
00:33:19It wasn't until these animals came.
00:33:21Hey, hey, yo, yo, yo, yo.
00:33:23Hold up, now, hold up.
00:33:25Wait a minute, you talking about these killers here?
00:33:27Or you talking about black people in general?
00:33:29Because if you're talking about black people,
00:33:31you need to check yourself
00:33:33before you get more than your feelings hurt, man.
00:33:35Both of you, sit down.
00:33:37What? You tell me what?
00:33:39I'll tell you about my Uzi, man.
00:33:41I don't own an Uzi.
00:33:43See, I don't know anybody that does own an Uzi.
00:33:45And I've never seen a black man in the hood making an Uzi.
00:33:47You got that?
00:33:49Black people don't make guns,
00:33:51and black people don't blow cocaine.
00:33:53So how does this rock get here?
00:33:55And how do these guns get here?
00:33:57And how come the jobs and the schools don't ever get here?
00:33:59See, if you wasn't so busy living in lily-white plains
00:34:01and driving your station wagon to work,
00:34:03you wouldn't see what I see.
00:34:05Millions of black people going to work every day
00:34:07and trying to make it,
00:34:09just like the Jews and just like the Italians.
00:34:11And those are the people I work for.
00:34:13And not one of them,
00:34:15not one of them owns an Uzi.
00:34:33I drive a two-door, live in Queens.
00:34:37Really going across that desk after Tomasino, huh?
00:34:41Nah, man, I got more control than that.
00:34:43No, you were great, man.
00:34:45I never heard you talk like that.
00:34:47You really put it to him.
00:34:49Me, I get all riled up.
00:34:51I never know what to say.
00:34:55You may not know what to say,
00:34:57but you know what time it is, man.
00:34:59I know.
00:35:01What you said was solid, though, man.
00:35:03Vic Tomasino doesn't see these people.
00:35:05He looks at a kid like Mikey,
00:35:07all he sees is trouble coming,
00:35:09trouble for him and his.
00:35:11But damn, man, is that all there's ever gonna be?
00:35:13Them and theirs, us and ours,
00:35:15shouting at each other
00:35:17across the street, across the desk?
00:35:19Take it easy, partner.
00:35:21It could be worse.
00:35:25We could be shooting each other.
00:35:27No, it's still pretty damn pathetic.
00:35:29All right, look, look, hold up.
00:35:31We're both in a bad mood, I'll tell you what.
00:35:33Let's go for a drink, and I'll pay for the drinks.
00:35:35No, man, I'm tired.
00:35:37Maybe tomorrow.
00:35:39This is me.
00:35:41All right, partner.
00:35:43That's you.
00:35:59All right.
00:36:01Now is the time.
00:36:03Hey!
00:36:15You didn't know where to go.
00:36:17You didn't know where to go.
00:36:23Come on!
00:36:25Come on!
00:36:27Damn!
00:36:49I just...
00:36:51walked right by her.
00:36:53Never even bent down or nothing.
00:36:55All right, man, what that symbolizes
00:36:57is that people in New York don't want to deal
00:36:59with a dying cop with a big melon head.
00:37:01And should anything happen to you,
00:37:03you should leave your partner
00:37:05with your extensive record collection.
00:37:09We're gonna have the same dream, huh?
00:37:13Yeah.
00:37:15Yeah.
00:37:17Not exactly, but the, um...
00:37:19the part about dying and being alone.
00:37:21So...
00:37:23So, we make a promise, huh?
00:37:25If...
00:37:27something happens,
00:37:29I won't leave you,
00:37:31you won't leave me.
00:37:33Ride with to emergency.
00:37:35Stick around. Stay right there.
00:37:37And if that's the end?
00:37:39Stand on our guard at the funeral?
00:37:43You bet.
00:37:45Bet.
00:37:48Hey, baby,
00:37:50how much more of this stuff
00:37:52we got to get through?
00:37:54That pile over there, that suitcase,
00:37:56and Lupe's bringing over the blade spotter.
00:37:58I never thought I'd get so bored counting money.
00:38:00Where's Cynthia?
00:38:02This show would go a lot faster if she was here to help.
00:38:04Hey, listen, Cynthia ain't got no part of this, all right?
00:38:06Why?
00:38:08She some kind of rosebud or something?
00:38:12Shut up.
00:38:17Shut up.
00:38:48Blakewell.
00:38:50What's all that?
00:38:52I'm calling over to Blakewell for a tally.
00:38:54It better all be there.
00:38:56Don't you go nowhere.
00:39:12Damn it!
00:39:17Strap me.
00:39:19Wait a minute. Let's count it first.
00:39:21Maybe he's just running because he's scared.
00:39:23Nobody rips me off. Give me a swamp.
00:39:25You're on parole, man. You cannot get caught.
00:39:27Get it out of the safe and give it to me!
00:39:29On my mark, get set, go!
00:39:44Top floor. You know where your kid is.
00:39:46Preference of stairwells?
00:39:49Take this one.
00:39:51I'll go that one.
00:39:53Hey, watch it.
00:39:59Hello.
00:40:29Hey, watch it.
00:40:59He's going to bust, bust, bust, bust, bust.
00:41:01You better bust fast.
00:41:30Where's my money, doofy?
00:41:32Nothing, man.
00:41:34Man, come on, man.
00:41:36I didn't do nothing, man.
00:41:38I didn't do nothing, man.
00:41:40Come on, man. I'll make it good, man.
00:41:42You done. You done, you bitch mother.
00:41:44I'll do good, man. I'll do whatever.
00:41:46Good. Bleed.
00:41:48What?
00:41:52Let's go, man.
00:41:54Let's go.
00:42:25Hey.
00:42:27Hey!
00:42:41Raymond!
00:42:45Ray!
00:42:47Ray!
00:42:54Ray!
00:43:06Oh!
00:43:12What have I done?
00:43:14What have I done?
00:43:18He's my friend.
00:43:21He's my friend!
00:43:25He's my friend.
00:43:48When patrolman Raymond Williamson was shot dead
00:43:50in a dirty brick stairwell
00:43:52on a housing project in Brooklyn,
00:43:54the TV cameras did not come to his funeral.
00:43:57George Bush did not come either.
00:43:59But nobody missed him.
00:44:01Danny Riley says every cop is Irish
00:44:03on the day of his funeral.
00:44:05We banged the drum slowly.
00:44:07We played the pipes for him.
00:44:09For Ray Williamson.
00:44:11Not for anybody else.
00:44:13Not for anybody else.
00:44:26I felt bad that day.
00:44:28He was a good cop.
00:44:30But the last time I saw him,
00:44:32we were this close to trading punches.
00:44:34What do I say to his people?
00:44:36To his partner?
00:44:38Word was the brass didn't want Robert Dayton
00:44:40in his partner's honor guard.
00:44:42They were afraid he'd collapse, be an embarrassment.
00:44:45But he did it. Straight up.
00:44:47Kept his promise.
00:44:54Hey, Riley.
00:44:58I, uh...
00:45:00I hear you guys caught this case.
00:45:02We're close to picking up that kid you saw on the stairs.
00:45:06We'd appreciate it.
00:45:10We'll get the shooter.
00:45:14That's the thing about funerals.
00:45:17They're a major marketplace for promises.
00:45:29That's right. I talked to him last night.
00:45:31He's down in...
00:45:33Just keep your mouth shut on that, all right?
00:45:35Stupidest thing I ever heard of, shooting a cop.
00:45:37He had to, Prince.
00:45:39The gun in his hand means six years inside.
00:45:41He was up alone.
00:45:43Didn't I say that? Didn't I say for him not to?
00:45:45Here. He told me it over the phone.
00:45:48A list of people he once smoked.
00:45:50Damn.
00:45:52You didn't say anything about this to Raheem, did you?
00:45:54Just to save you in charge while he's gone.
00:45:56That's right. That's the way he left it to me.
00:45:59Well, you know where I'm at.
00:46:04It's none of your business, bitch.
00:46:06You saved that bitch talk for the whores
00:46:08like that gold-dippin' hussy in the street just now.
00:46:10You talk to me like that, you won't be talking to me at all,
00:46:13Mr. Carl H. Franklin.
00:46:15You call me Prince, all right?
00:46:17Trash gave you that name. John Butler gave you that name.
00:46:19You know, I had that name for years, okay?
00:46:21Besides, justice never done nothing to you
00:46:23for you to call him trash.
00:46:25Damn it, Cynthia, can't you see
00:46:27that he's the one that gave me something to do
00:46:29when I couldn't find no work?
00:46:31Something to do? Like selling crack?
00:46:33No, I never sold any...
00:46:35Don't lie to me.
00:46:37Don't you think I know what's been going on?
00:46:39You think I believe you every time you say you won the lottery
00:46:41or hit a number?
00:46:43Oh, okay, so you didn't believe me, huh?
00:46:45No.
00:46:47Never had no problem taking the money, though, did you?
00:46:49Never had no problem living good, eating good,
00:46:51and partying all the time, did you?
00:46:53Never had no problem dreaming about all these big houses, did you?
00:46:55Listen, okay?
00:46:57I never sold any type of crack, baby.
00:46:59I did not sell one vial of crack.
00:47:01I'm a manager, okay?
00:47:03I fix things up.
00:47:05I buy cars, cement, weldings.
00:47:07I fix up buildings, okay?
00:47:09You fix buildings so Justice Butler
00:47:11can sell crack out of them?
00:47:13Yes, okay?
00:47:15Yes, that is what I do.
00:47:23Something happened, though, didn't it?
00:47:25What do you mean?
00:47:27This past week, you've been different.
00:47:29Nervous.
00:47:31Something's got you spooked.
00:47:33You're the one who's spooked.
00:47:35I am not the one running in and out
00:47:37all hours of the night.
00:47:39I'm not the one getting the secret papers
00:47:41from the sluts in the street,
00:47:43and I am not the one with a 9-millimeter
00:47:45hitting an old boot in the back of the closet
00:47:47with two clips in the other.
00:47:49That's not you, baby.
00:47:51That's not you.
00:47:53That's not you.
00:47:55That's not you.
00:48:01What did you say?
00:48:03I didn't say nothing.
00:48:05I don't know nothing.
00:48:07Let me tell you something, Rupi.
00:48:09You came in here, punk, with a pretty face
00:48:11and a lot of information, and I'm telling you
00:48:13you can't leave with both, okay?
00:48:15So I want you to think about this real hard
00:48:17because this may be the most important moment
00:48:19of your life, and we're not leaving
00:48:21this little room until you figure out
00:48:23that I ain't giving up nothing.
00:48:25Okay, so the cop's partner puts you on the north stairwell
00:48:27just before the shooting?
00:48:29Yeah, I was running up the stairs, so...
00:48:31So what were you doing running up the stairs?
00:48:33Hey, I like to keep in shape.
00:48:35Oh, yeah, with a 9-millimeter in each hand,
00:48:37what's good for the arms and the shoulders?
00:48:39I didn't have no 9s in my hands.
00:48:41What kind of fool questions that?
00:48:43There's a hallway at the top of the stairs
00:48:45which connects the stairwells, okay?
00:48:47Now, you cross over, and you go to the south stairwell.
00:48:49Only when you get there, there's a cop there.
00:48:51Yeah, man!
00:48:53One shot, bam, down at an angle.
00:48:55It all fits.
00:48:57You think you can just hang this on me
00:48:59like lights on a Christmas tree?
00:49:07What are you afraid of, son?
00:49:09What do you think?
00:49:13Yeah, you're righteous.
00:49:15You're no rat.
00:49:17Normally, that's a good bet,
00:49:19but, uh, this is different, see?
00:49:21This could get crazy.
00:49:25And if the word gets out
00:49:27that you know who killed the cop
00:49:29and you didn't tell us,
00:49:31then you just traded one problem for another.
00:49:35What's that mean?
00:49:37The way I figure it,
00:49:39that cop took a bullet that was meant for you.
00:49:41That puts the scales way off balance,
00:49:43and the forces of nature don't like that.
00:49:49Don't try to be a butterfly in a hurricane.
00:49:53You could get blown away.
00:49:59Okay, our boy Loopy
00:50:01says John Henry Butler,
00:50:03a.k.a. Justice.
00:50:05Three priors,
00:50:07assault, armed robbery, and possession with intent.
00:50:09This is our shooter.
00:50:11Yes, sir.
00:50:13Seems that, uh, Mr. Butler
00:50:15has, uh, gone big time
00:50:17in the crack business,
00:50:19right under our noses.
00:50:21As a matter of fact, he must be pulling in
00:50:23about $25,000 to $40,000 a day
00:50:25at some spots.
00:50:33If you're working Raymond's case,
00:50:35I'd like to sit in.
00:50:39This is a homicide case, Dayton.
00:50:41Detective work.
00:50:43I know I can help.
00:50:47I'm sure you can, kid.
00:50:49But under the circumstances,
00:50:51I just can't allow it.
00:50:53I'm sorry.
00:51:03Damn.
00:51:09Mahoney and Lee,
00:51:11I want you to check with narcotics,
00:51:13see if they're running an investigation
00:51:15on this Mr. Butler and his gang.
00:51:17Maybe we could bring down
00:51:19his whole operation at once.
00:51:21How good is the make, Danny?
00:51:23Witness is positive on Butler.
00:51:25He's scared.
00:51:27Of who?
00:51:29Of us now, but, uh,
00:51:31when he has to look Mr. Butler in the eye
00:51:33across the courtroom,
00:51:35I'm not sure.
00:51:45Let's go.
00:52:15Take care.
00:52:23Pater.
00:52:25In 88, when Butler disappeared
00:52:27off the assault charge,
00:52:29the word is he hightailed it south.
00:52:31He's got family in South Carolina.
00:52:35You talk to the guys that work in that case.
00:52:37They'll tell you what to do.
00:52:39He's got family in South Carolina.
00:52:41You talk to the guys
00:52:43that work in that case.
00:52:45The Pylorsville thing is solid.
00:52:47Pylorsville? You got two dozen leads
00:52:49you haven't followed right here in Brooklyn.
00:52:51All bogus.
00:52:53Right, well, that's the word, bogus.
00:52:55Gentlemen, there'll be no wild goose chases
00:52:57to South Carolina or anywhere else
00:52:59at the expense of my budget.
00:53:01Now we get to the real reason, huh, Lieutenant?
00:53:03We'll be back in three weeks.
00:53:05These punks can only eat so much home cooking,
00:53:07It's more home cooking
00:53:09than Raymond Williamson's likely to get, sir.
00:53:11That's right.
00:53:13Get out.
00:53:15Go on, get out of here
00:53:17before I yank the both of you off this case.
00:53:37Yo, Riley.
00:53:39Hey.
00:53:41Dave, what's going on?
00:53:43Not too much.
00:53:45Not getting as much sleep as I should.
00:53:49I was just cleaning out the last of his locker.
00:53:51Ah, that's rough.
00:53:53So, uh,
00:53:55this is the guy, huh?
00:53:59Any progress?
00:54:01We're working on it.
00:54:03Day and night.
00:54:07Okay.
00:54:09Good luck.
00:54:37
00:55:07One good thing about having an old pro
00:55:09like Danny Riley for a partner
00:55:11is he's got pull.
00:55:13He can change a boss's mind
00:55:15or maybe he knows a bigger boss.
00:55:17Suddenly one day he's got an airline ticket
00:55:19and the next day he's gone.
00:55:21Down there to those tobacco farms,
00:55:23little town squares.
00:55:25And there's space.
00:55:27The air is clean and fresh.
00:55:29And maybe a guy begins to wonder,
00:55:31is this place in real life?
00:55:33I don't know.
00:55:35I wonder, is this place in New York City
00:55:37even on the same planet?
00:55:39There's always something to remind.
00:55:41The answer is yes.
00:55:45I reckon you can identify these objects.
00:55:47They appear to be vials
00:55:49of crack cocaine, Sheriff Letting.
00:55:51Number one export
00:55:53to the city of New York.
00:55:55And all this time
00:55:57I thought it was corned beef.
00:55:59I'm glad you think this is humorous.
00:56:01I'm afraid I don't.
00:56:03Not when this crap starts showing up
00:56:05in my junior high schools.
00:56:07I surely do not.
00:56:09I'm sorry. I don't mean to make light of it.
00:56:11I just want to point out
00:56:13that the trade works both ways.
00:56:15You sent us one of your homegrowns,
00:56:17John Henry Butler.
00:56:19What's he charged with this time?
00:56:21Don't tell me there's been
00:56:23another mugging in the city of New York.
00:56:27This time he killed a cop.
00:56:34Susan,
00:56:36see if you can get me Judge Stetner at the lake.
00:56:38I need a warrant.
00:56:56Cecil,
00:56:58looking for your nephew John again.
00:57:04He live up north.
00:57:06Uh-huh. Well, we think he's down here.
00:57:08We're gonna take a look inside.
00:57:10Here's the warrant.
00:57:17Cecil, you trying to stop us?
00:57:19Says I gotta let you in.
00:57:21Don't tell me where to stand.
00:57:23Get on down here.
00:57:25Everybody's a lawyer.
00:57:33Now, these boys will get around
00:57:35to searching all the family places.
00:57:37We gotta move him.
00:57:39What'd he give you?
00:57:44John Henry don't want a piece on that.
00:57:53I got a dozen houses around these parts.
00:57:55I'll start checking them out.
00:57:57Good. Thanks.
00:57:59You, uh, set for a place to stay?
00:58:01Anything you need to know about Platteville?
00:58:04Yeah.
00:58:09Where would that man go to have a drink?
00:58:31Come on.
00:58:55Juice of the barley stout
00:58:57and a wee Nancy for openers.
00:59:01Herbert, the man wants an Irish whiskey
00:59:03and a stout ale.
00:59:05Correct.
00:59:07The man's confused.
00:59:09He thinks he's somewhere else.
00:59:12No.
00:59:14I haven't had whiskey yet.
00:59:16Confusion as to where I am
00:59:18comes after the whiskey.
00:59:20The man wishes he was somewhere else.
00:59:22No.
00:59:24If you've got whiskey,
00:59:26this is where I wish to be.
00:59:29It'll have to be a bourbon and a beer.
00:59:31America tries.
00:59:40Cop.
00:59:42Irish.
00:59:46But not Boston.
00:59:49Philly.
00:59:51Baltimore.
00:59:55Maybe New York.
00:59:58Been around bars all her life.
01:00:00Finally bought one.
01:00:02Runs a little book on the side.
01:00:04Used to run a string of girls
01:00:06till it got too rough.
01:00:08Knows everyone.
01:00:10Hates cops.
01:00:12Till she needs one.
01:00:16Let's hear it.
01:00:20John Henry Butler.
01:00:22Justice Butler.
01:00:24That family ought to be running to this county.
01:00:27Every time that boy do something up north,
01:00:30back he come running home,
01:00:32bringing a world of heat with him.
01:00:34The last time he was here,
01:00:36he managed to rape two girls
01:00:38and beat up another.
01:00:40I hope you all catch him
01:00:42and fry him up good.
01:00:47Why did you say that?
01:00:49Fry him?
01:00:52I don't hate cops that much.
01:00:54How much?
01:00:56To kill him.
01:00:58Ain't that what he done?
01:01:00Killed a cop?
01:01:02How do you know that?
01:01:04From that fella that's working on the case.
01:01:06That's me.
01:01:08No, that ain't you.
01:01:10You're the wrong color.
01:01:16He ain't around there.
01:01:18Nobody seen him.
01:01:20No police, no lights, no cars.
01:01:24I'm keeping it quiet here,
01:01:26but you got to find the guy
01:01:28before he steps in it.
01:01:30I got a fax on the way, all right?
01:01:38What's this, Riley?
01:01:41This is trouble.
01:01:51Yo, Brent.
01:01:55Yo, what's up, man?
01:01:57You're going strapped these days.
01:01:59Dangerous world, you know?
01:02:01Yeah.
01:02:03I seen one.
01:02:05Oh, yeah, Justice ain't gonna like that.
01:02:07What Justice ain't gonna like
01:02:09is you ignoring his list.
01:02:11Bitch told you, huh?
01:02:13Justice wants those names smoked.
01:02:15Yeah, well, I say no.
01:02:17Lupe in jail, man, talking about us.
01:02:19We got to send him a message.
01:02:21Yeah, well, look, Lupe ain't nothing
01:02:23but a knucklehead runner.
01:02:25He don't know jack about this operation.
01:02:27So what? So maybe the cops pick us up
01:02:29and they sweat us a little bit.
01:02:31We chill and we're okay.
01:02:33Worst thing we can do is start killing people.
01:02:35Worst thing we can do is betray our brother.
01:02:37Yeah, well, our brother is okay for now.
01:02:39He's flat-out stupid to kill people for no reason.
01:02:42Especially folks sitting in beauty parlors.
01:02:46You pork out on me?
01:02:52Hey, the thing about killing innocent people
01:02:55is it's a stone-clear message.
01:02:59I am bad.
01:03:02Don't mess with me.
01:03:05We work outside the operation.
01:03:08It also works inside the operation.
01:03:13It also works inside.
01:03:36How's the room we got for you?
01:03:38It's all right.
01:03:40You treating it good?
01:03:42Hey, three squares, it's nice.
01:03:46Good.
01:03:48So...
01:03:50Let's, uh, let's try it again.
01:03:53What was his real name?
01:03:56I don't know.
01:03:58A man called or something.
01:04:00He was just Prince to me.
01:04:02And, uh, what was his job?
01:04:04Took care of business.
01:04:06Found spots, bought cars, just like that, I think.
01:04:09You remember where his house was?
01:04:11I don't know that.
01:04:12Look, he was a boss, I was a runner.
01:04:15I just did my job.
01:04:24Got your call.
01:04:26Is it Butler?
01:04:27Nope.
01:04:28Silver Trans Am.
01:04:30New York plates.
01:04:32Thought we'd give you a shot first.
01:04:35Thanks.
01:04:40Yo.
01:04:46Riley.
01:04:50Look, man, I'll just leave.
01:04:53You never saw me here.
01:04:55And when John Butler here turns up with a bullet in his brain,
01:04:57what do I do then?
01:04:59You celebrate.
01:05:01Yeah, I probably do.
01:05:03I mean, I don't know.
01:05:05What do I do then?
01:05:07You celebrate.
01:05:08Yeah, I probably would.
01:05:11But I can't let this go down, Robert.
01:05:13Besides, the locals know you're down here.
01:05:16You could scam them.
01:05:17Yeah, I probably could, but how do I scam myself?
01:05:21I ain't leaving this job with this taste in my mouth.
01:05:24I don't believe you.
01:05:26You want to let Raymond's killer go free because...
01:05:28He ain't gonna go free.
01:05:29Because smoking him might leave a bad taste in your mouth?
01:05:31I'm gonna nail him, I know my job.
01:05:34I know mine.
01:05:35It's the same job.
01:05:37Hey, we took the same oath.
01:05:40We swore to uphold the same laws.
01:05:45If we can't get over this crap,
01:05:47what's the line between us and them?
01:05:49I'll give you the lecture if that's what it takes.
01:05:52I thought we'd be on that.
01:05:54Maybe not.
01:05:56You sleeping any better?
01:05:59Yeah, I don't think I'm sleeping at all.
01:06:04He was the best, man.
01:06:07You should have seen him walking those streets,
01:06:10knocking on doors, talking to the kids.
01:06:14He was the hope.
01:06:17And we killed him.
01:06:20Robert.
01:06:21Brooklyn killed him.
01:06:22Crack killed him.
01:06:24Shot him like a dog,
01:06:25because we don't know what anything's worth anymore.
01:06:30And I include myself.
01:06:33I'm sitting here in this bar,
01:06:34and I'm thinking your partner was right.
01:06:39Well, it's not just Brooklyn.
01:06:41It's a whole damn planet full of animals.
01:06:47No, no, no.
01:06:49What Vic said wasn't right.
01:06:52The trouble with Vic is he's getting his heart broken
01:06:54one little crack at a time.
01:06:57It's better you get it all at once, you know?
01:07:00Like a sledgehammer.
01:07:02Right here.
01:07:04And you know something, kid?
01:07:06We're lucky.
01:07:08Lucky.
01:07:09It's better to get your heart broken all at once and early.
01:07:14Because it heals.
01:07:17You come out better.
01:07:20You know, your partner was right,
01:07:22what he said to Vic that day.
01:07:25The people that are trying to make a life in that place,
01:07:27those are the people I'm working for.
01:07:30So is Vic, only he don't know it.
01:07:33So are you.
01:07:36Here.
01:07:38That's the job, Robert.
01:07:40Don't worry about the planet.
01:07:43Go home.
01:07:45Do the job.
01:07:49Riley.
01:07:51We got a tip.
01:07:58Go, go, go.
01:08:19Let's go.
01:08:20Come on, Vic.
01:08:21Somebody move, somebody move.
01:08:23What do you got?
01:08:24In that room, in that room.
01:08:26Take him here.
01:08:51God.
01:08:52Robert.
01:08:54Robert.
01:09:06New Yorkers see garbage, they get so done homesick.
01:09:11He's been here all right.
01:09:14Look at this.
01:09:15All New York numbers.
01:09:17And what's this?
01:09:19What area code is 301?
01:09:21301, that's Baltimore.
01:09:24Baltimore.
01:09:26Butler family in Baltimore, too.
01:09:47So where's this partner of yours?
01:09:49His flight got delayed from Carolina.
01:09:50He said to get started without him.
01:09:52Let's go.
01:10:01Lady, please listen.
01:10:02I just need you to stick with me, OK?
01:10:04What I need to know from you is whether or not
01:10:07you can identify this man as John Henry Butler.
01:10:10Huh?
01:10:14What is his relation to you?
01:10:17He's my sister's boy.
01:10:19You break anything in there, it's your paycheck.
01:10:21You hear me?
01:10:27Did he call you from South Carolina?
01:10:31Old Cecil called and said how y'all was down there
01:10:34still chasing around after Johnny.
01:10:36Can't seem to leave that boy alone, can you?
01:10:38That boy killed a cop.
01:10:40Oh, I'll bet you white cops are always hassling young lads.
01:10:43Cop was black.
01:10:45His weapon was still in his holster.
01:10:48He's an innocent victim.
01:10:52Nobody's innocent.
01:10:54Hey, Detective.
01:10:55Yeah?
01:10:56There's just a kid back there.
01:10:58That is my grandson, Will.
01:11:00He left New York before any of this happened.
01:11:02He don't know nothing about this.
01:11:05Nobody's innocent.
01:11:10You white cops think you can come in here
01:11:12and treat us like we was something you scraped
01:11:14up off the bottom of your shoes.
01:11:17How you doing?
01:11:23Nick's fan, huh?
01:11:25Yeah.
01:11:26Me too.
01:11:31So, uh, how long has it been since you lived here?
01:11:36Moved south to Grandma two years ago.
01:11:39How come?
01:11:43Escape.
01:11:47Escape?
01:11:56Grandma's got that rap down pretty good, huh?
01:11:58What's that?
01:12:00I'm a victim.
01:12:02Everybody against me.
01:12:05She may have a point.
01:12:07Yeah, but you're tired of hearing it.
01:12:11Yeah.
01:12:14Yeah, so am I.
01:12:16That's why I stopped.
01:12:18Stopped what?
01:12:20Stopped being a victim.
01:12:23Letting them fools run my life
01:12:26put me in a place I had no way out of.
01:12:31You know Butler?
01:12:32Hell yeah.
01:12:35Used to get high with Justice when we was junk.
01:12:39Were you crew?
01:12:42Hunters all.
01:12:43Never sold no dish.
01:12:47He still calls you, right?
01:12:49Sure.
01:12:51He calls.
01:12:53If the man needs something.
01:12:57Like someone to meet him at the airport.
01:12:59Like someplace to hide.
01:13:03When?
01:13:09Last night.
01:13:12Car from the airplane.
01:13:14Already on his way here, he says.
01:13:19What did you tell him?
01:13:21I told him to keep going.
01:13:26Told him I don't need his heat.
01:13:28I got something going here now.
01:13:31I'm back in school.
01:13:33I got a life.
01:13:36Know what I'm saying?
01:13:39Escape.
01:13:43Yeah.
01:13:46Cause Justice don't want to hear that.
01:13:49Says I got to find him a place.
01:13:53So there was this girl he used to date.
01:13:57Moved to Philly.
01:13:58I knew her number.
01:14:00Give it to him.
01:14:04Did he go to Philly?
01:14:06Didn't come here.
01:14:08That's all I know.
01:14:17Will you give me the number?
01:14:20Yeah, sure.
01:14:23Will you make a call?
01:14:29Escape.
01:14:30For some reason, the way he said that word stayed with me.
01:14:34By the time I picked up Danny and we were on our way to Philadelphia
01:14:37for what we hoped would be the arrest of Justice Butler,
01:14:40we'd both been up about three days running.
01:14:43But you know what cops are like.
01:14:45All we need to keep going is for life to put away the stick
01:14:48and give us a little peek of the cabin.
01:14:51Damn airline.
01:14:54What's happening?
01:14:58Justice, you there?
01:15:00Yeah, no thanks to you.
01:15:02Hey, man, you got to understand.
01:15:05I mean, my grandmother and all.
01:15:07What's that, our man?
01:15:09Philly PD's got an address and a bunch of swats waiting for us.
01:15:13You know, I'd do this job another 20 years if they'd let me.
01:15:28Justice?
01:15:29Yo, little brother.
01:15:30I hear you've been dragging your feet on some serious business.
01:15:32Well, hey, you know, man, I'm just playing it smart, all right?
01:15:35I mean, no need to make any heat when we've got enough already, right?
01:15:37There's only a few people that can hang me.
01:15:39Brother Loopy, Wanda, and you.
01:15:42Hey, man, now wait. Now, you know that I would never...
01:15:44Well, how am I supposed to know?
01:15:46Where's the sign that shows me Mr. Lord?
01:15:53You do the work, or the work does you.
01:15:56That's the code we live by, Prince.
01:15:58That's the choice you've got.
01:16:17So this kid, Will, how'd you flip him?
01:16:19I didn't have to flip him. He wanted help.
01:16:22Said he was sick and tired of putting up with animals like Butler.
01:16:26You use that word a lot.
01:16:29What word?
01:16:30Animals.
01:16:34So?
01:16:37Hey, if a guy's an animal, call him.
01:16:40It's just like everybody's an animal to you these days.
01:16:42Wait a minute. Danny, what?
01:16:44What are you saying? I use the word too much or what?
01:16:48What? Come on, tell me. You brought it up.
01:16:52There's gotta be a few human beings out there, don't you think?
01:17:07Yeah.
01:17:22Come on, baby. You gotta get out of here right now.
01:17:24Come on. Get some stuff packed.
01:17:25Why?
01:17:26I can't say right now. You can go to your uncle's. Come on.
01:17:28In Cleveland?
01:17:29The further, the better. Please, let's hurry up.
01:17:31No, wait a minute. You are in trouble. I'm not gonna leave you.
01:17:33Come on, just once, please. Just this once will you do what I ask?
01:17:36Please.
01:17:51Come on.
01:18:21What's going on?
01:18:51Come on.
01:19:22Police!
01:19:24Open up!
01:19:28Open the doors to the police!
01:19:36Come on!
01:19:37Right there.
01:19:38Get ready.
01:19:51Come on.
01:20:07My boys, take him down.
01:20:14Police! Police! Police!
01:20:16Police! Police! Don't shoot!
01:20:18Let me see those hands!
01:20:20Come on! Come on! Come on!
01:20:26Secure it!
01:20:30Get him! Come on!
01:20:50All right, everybody out. He's all yours. No questions.
01:20:53No.
01:20:58Just take him in.
01:21:09We're gonna put this back and still go downstairs.
01:21:12Prisoner walking!
01:21:21Ha ha ha!
01:21:25Gotta admit, that's something you don't see every day.
01:21:28What?
01:21:30A couple of New York detectives with that much faith in the courts.
01:21:41You rat! You rat!
01:21:44I mean, I didn't say that, right? I said that!
01:21:47You're dead, Grinch! You're dead and in your grave!
01:21:50You open your mouth! You hear me?!
01:21:52You hear me?!
01:22:05Weren't you in the apartment of Wanda Pearson
01:22:08counting money just prior to the death of Officer Williamson?
01:22:12Why don't you ask Wanda that?
01:22:13You know why.
01:22:14Exactly. That's my reason too.
01:22:17And listen, I'm not gonna testify against them
01:22:19without some type of arrangement.
01:22:21We don't make deals.
01:22:22No.
01:22:24But he does.
01:22:28I can give you just the solid for the cop shooting,
01:22:30plus beauty magic.
01:22:32I can give you a half a dozen shootings you don't know anything about.
01:22:35I can give you the whole crack operation.
01:22:37Runners, steers, and bosses.
01:22:42Yeah?
01:22:44And what do we give you?
01:22:45I know one thing.
01:22:48I ain't doing no time.
01:22:50That's the deal.
01:22:52Nothing.
01:22:54Hey, come on now, Timmy.
01:22:55You can't be seriously thinking about letting this animal...
01:23:00I'm not charging this suspect.
01:23:01Of course not, Vic.
01:23:03It's gonna have to do sometime.
01:23:04He'll realize that sooner or later.
01:23:06I just hope it's sooner.
01:23:08Because our case is basically down to the testimony of Mr. Lupe.
01:23:11Not exactly the status mast on the ship estate.
01:23:18I heard a single shot.
01:23:20I ran to the other stairwell.
01:23:23And there was Raymond...
01:23:28Officer Williams.
01:23:34Shot through the neck.
01:23:36And your partner later died of this wound, did he not?
01:23:40Yeah, he did.
01:23:42I watched him die.
01:23:43Thank you, officer.
01:23:48Your witness.
01:23:56Officer Dayton.
01:23:58You did not see with your own eyes who shot your partner, did you?
01:24:08No.
01:24:09I'm sorry, Officer Dayton.
01:24:10No.
01:24:12I'm sorry, Officer Dayton. I can't hear you.
01:24:13No.
01:24:17Nothing further, your honor.
01:24:24Answer the question, please.
01:24:27Who was chasing you?
01:24:29Was it the defendant, John Butler?
01:24:33Yeah.
01:24:36It was just...
01:24:37John Butler was chasing me.
01:24:50The cops told me, said it was him.
01:24:53John Henry didn't kill nobody.
01:24:56Now that's the truth.
01:24:59That's the truth.
01:25:08I'm gonna get out of here, baby.
01:25:09I just gotta get my deal to solve.
01:25:12Are you sure you're doing the right thing?
01:25:14Yeah.
01:25:16I want you out of here so bad.
01:25:19I don't know what you think you're gonna say that we haven't.
01:25:22I don't know.
01:25:24But Raymond was my partner.
01:25:26And from what the DA was saying,
01:25:27the guy who killed him is gonna walk if Franklin doesn't testify?
01:25:31I don't know.
01:25:33I don't know.
01:25:34The guy who killed him is gonna walk if Franklin doesn't testify?
01:25:38I got to try.
01:25:40Listen, Robin, we understand that you got to try.
01:25:42As a matter of fact, we want to see you get your shot at it.
01:25:45Just don't get your hopes up, okay?
01:25:47This Prince character, listen to me.
01:25:50He don't care about you and he don't care about your partner.
01:25:52He cares about one thing, getting out of this jam.
01:25:57I love you.
01:25:59I love you, too, baby.
01:26:01Excuse me, Miss Cynthia Breton.
01:26:05I'm Detective Dan Reilly, Homicide.
01:26:08My partner and I need to talk to you.
01:26:12You can't do that to me.
01:26:14Hey, I'll get you crazy.
01:26:15It's okay, it's okay.
01:26:16No, it ain't okay. You better bring her back here.
01:26:25Get out of my face, all right? Who the hell are you?
01:26:28What you want, man?
01:26:31Get out of my face.
01:26:41It was my partner Justice killed.
01:26:45And why don't you say it in court?
01:26:47What's the deal?
01:26:48No deal.
01:26:50You do the right thing.
01:26:52Okay, so I'm supposed to throw away the one card I got left for nothing, huh?
01:26:56You got more than one card.
01:26:57She seems like a real nice girl.
01:26:59They had no right, man.
01:27:00They had no right to take her away like that.
01:27:02Well, you know how they are.
01:27:03She came to see me, okay? She ain't got nothing to do with the proof.
01:27:06She hated Justice.
01:27:07I don't think they believe her.
01:27:09Well, I told them.
01:27:11I know they don't believe you.
01:27:14It's not right, man.
01:27:17She didn't do nothing.
01:27:22What did my partner do?
01:27:28You know something, kid?
01:27:31You're lucky.
01:27:32Lucky?
01:27:34I never got a chance to save my partner.
01:27:42He asked me for a gun.
01:27:44I gave him a 9mm Taurus.
01:27:46And he took off after looping.
01:27:49A minute later,
01:27:51I heard a shot.
01:27:53And he was dead.
01:27:54A minute later,
01:27:56I heard a shot.
01:27:59Then he came back.
01:28:02Did Mr. Butler say anything
01:28:04when he returned to the money counting apartment?
01:28:07Yeah.
01:28:10He said,
01:28:11I shot a cop.
01:28:14Then he gave me the 9 to get rid of.
01:28:19And what happened to that weapon?
01:28:22I kept it.
01:28:24Where is the gun now?
01:28:28It's in that box on your table.
01:28:55In the matter of the State of New York
01:28:57versus John Henry Butler,
01:28:59the jury informs me it has reached a verdict.
01:29:02Mr. Butler, please rise.
01:29:25Guilty.
01:29:26All counts.
01:29:33Uh-huh.
01:29:34And House is building a pretty good racketeering case, too.
01:29:39The whole crew is going down.
01:29:42You know,
01:29:44I don't know what to do.
01:29:46I don't know what to do.
01:29:48I don't know what to do.
01:29:50I don't know what to do.
01:29:52I don't know what to do.
01:29:54I don't know what to do.
01:30:02Thanks.
01:30:03All right, all right.
01:30:05Get out of here.
01:30:07Of course, Prince didn't testify solely
01:30:09out of the kindness of his heart.
01:30:11The D.A. cut him a deal.
01:30:13He'll do time in prison,
01:30:15all of it in protective custody.
01:30:17But that doesn't matter.
01:30:19The point is, we all make deals.
01:30:21We all make promises.
01:30:22Your measure is how many you keep.
01:30:28That was the last case I worked with Danny Riley.
01:30:31He retired the next month.
01:30:33At the retirement party, the boss comes over,
01:30:36all of us feeling pretty good,
01:30:38and he says,
01:30:39So, Riley, tell me,
01:30:41what was the best thing you ever saw on the job?
01:30:45A guy sleeping, Danny says.
01:30:48A guy sleeping.
01:30:52A guy sleeping.
01:31:22A guy sleeping.
01:31:23A guy sleeping.
01:31:52A guy sleeping.
