Tens of thousands in Tokyo have been urged to evacuate as Typhoon Shanshan, now downgraded to a tropical storm, continues its northward trek across Japan.

At least six people have died as Shanshan moved eastward on Saturday (Aug 31), unleashing torrential rain and triggering landslide and flood warnings hundreds of kilometers from its center.

00:36Kyushu Electric reported that over 35,000 homes in Kagoshima Prefecture, southern Kyushu,
00:43were without power.
00:44As of 12.50pm local time, Shanshan was centered in the Pacific Ocean, approximately 480 kilometers
00:51southwest of Tokyo, triggering heavy rainfall as far north as Hokkaido.
00:56Authorities have issued flood and landslide warnings nationwide since the storm's arrival,
01:02resulting in the suspension of air and rail services and the closure of factories.
