Transcript
00:30Good evening, all signs pointing to a Celtic victory today.
00:45Home advantage, just one defeat in their last 12 derbies,
00:48and Rangers manager Philippe Clermont still to win one.
00:51Whether it's tonight, Mark Wilson and Billy Dodds
00:53have experienced the full range of emotions
00:56in this unique fixture.
00:57Who would get the glory today?
01:07Nothing's won today.
01:09I think what it does, it gets us in the right direction
01:11and get the win.
01:12These games of football are decided on details,
01:15on important moments, and you need to grab them.
01:19Wonderful from Kiyoko!
01:23Oh, that's stunning from the turn to...
01:25He just scores!
01:28Mane, 90!
01:31Lovely, Mane from Simeone Benzert.
01:35He's run off!
01:37He lifts towards goal!
01:39Mataki!
01:40Wonderful strike from Mataki.
01:42And he's back on the small sheet, Danilo.
01:51Celtic did some big business on deadline day,
01:54but it's a tried and trusted starting XI for Brendan Rodgers.
01:58With Nicholas Kuhn and Kiyoko coming back in for Forrest and Ida,
02:01and only Kasper Schmeichel making his Old Firm debut.
02:05There could be others from the bench,
02:07for Trusty, Bailly, McCowan and Engels.
02:11There are four Old Firm debutants in Rangers,
02:13lined up in the shape of Jeff Day, Robin Proper,
02:15Connor Barron and Vaclav Czerny.
02:18Proper and Mohamed Diomondi are the two players
02:20who took him in from the demolition of Ross County,
02:23with Baligan and Lawrence on the bench.
02:28It's a fixture that never gets old,
02:32and the first of the season is always keenly anticipated.
02:36Celtic, hot favourites to continue their dominance of this contest,
02:40as Rangers look for a first victory here in almost four years.
02:49Well, no manager has a better record in this fixture than Brendan Rodgers.
02:54Philippe Clermont still looking for a first Old Firm victory after four meetings,
02:59only a couple of Rangers managers have failed to win in their first five.
03:05Not only have Celtic dominated the fixture of late,
03:09they've also started the season in highly impressive form.
03:13Another win today will already take them five points clear of their city rivals.
03:18Slip there from Bernardo, he's planning to find Ntondo.
03:22Here's Tavernier, decent position.
03:24Slots it through, Dessers with the first chance,
03:26Sadio Dessers, he's got to do better!
03:28Brilliant position.
03:34Offside flag, did go up.
03:38Checking for a play, Tavernier spotting Dessers,
03:42does look fractionally offside.
03:45That's Sterling.
03:49Tavernier in support.
03:51Dicks that one out, and a header comes in from Ntondo.
03:55It's another really good opportunity for Rangers,
03:58and Robbie Ntondo sends it wide.
04:02Just be off.
04:09Matati doing well under pressure from Sterling,
04:12and now it's McGregor to release Koon.
04:18Chance here for Celtic, the opening goal from Kiyoko!
04:24Lightning counter-attack from Celtic, and it's Kiyoko to finish it off.
04:33McGregor with the pinpoint pass, it's Koon onside.
04:39That'll be checked, but he looks up, he sees Kiyoko,
04:43that one's fine, that's for sure.
04:46And Kiyoko wasn't gonna miss that one.
04:52Another check going on, it will be for Nicholas Koon,
04:55the initial pass from McGregor.
04:58I'm pretty sure.
05:01That's no goal, it's offside.
05:03A massive let-off for Rangers.
05:06That's...
05:11Millimetres in it.
05:14There's the decision.
05:19Celtic have lost just one of the last 12 meetings with Rangers,
05:23and even that was after the title was won a couple of seasons ago.
05:30It was just over three years ago, in fact, that they last lost
05:33what you might call a meaningful league fixture against Rangers.
05:39Bernardo.
05:41Johnson's gonna catch that, there's a slip in there, it's Maida!
05:44That one will count!
05:47And Celtic are in front now!
05:51They didn't have to wait too much longer.
05:54CHEERING
05:57And Dijs and Maida, as he did at Ibrox,
06:00in the 3-3, opens the scoring.
06:06Joe Hart, a familiar face, back to enjoy this one.
06:12Momotaro just dropped Johnson, he does really well to keep it in,
06:15there's a slip from Kropper,
06:17and Dijs and Maida buddies it past Butland.
06:21It's a superb play from Johnston,
06:24the desire to keep it in and create the danger.
06:30And the onrushing Maida.
06:33Slips it under the body of Butland,
06:36and Celtic do have the advantage.
06:39CHEERING
06:51Picked up by Koon, tries to thread it through.
06:54Tavernier with a challenge on Maida.
06:58Won't be a corner, and nothing more.
07:04Johnson did enough there in the end, Tavernier, to knock that behind.
07:09CHEERING
07:12Bernardo's corner, near post, flick on!
07:15It's Maida who got the touch on it, Kilgore will keep it in.
07:22It's in, straight to Cerny, who's in turn given it away.
07:28Maida, trying to flick that on to a team-mate at the back post.
07:32Gregor, oh, killed it.
07:34Out to Koon, Kilgore taking it off the ball.
07:38Koon continues, Johnston now cuts it back.
07:41Maida again, Tavernier in the way.
07:43Still there might be a chance.
07:45And Hattati sends it off target from a glorious position.
07:56Johnston again providing a good ball into the box,
07:59it's time Maida couldn't turn it into the net.
08:02And Hattati really should have.
08:07Some new talent available to Brendan Rodgers.
08:11Waiting on the bench for their opportunity.
08:17Barrett, Taylor was on his toes, Cerny wasn't,
08:20and now he finds Kilgore,
08:22Kilgore tries to slot that pass, Jack Butland!
08:27It's absolutely brilliant from Kilgore.
08:32Denied earlier on by an offside decision.
08:37And now he laps up the adulation of the Celtic fans.
08:41Greg Taylor was a big part of that.
08:45Cerny was on his heels, Taylor nipped in,
08:48found Kilgore, and the Japanese striker did the rest.
08:57It's not easy to beat a goalkeeper of Jack Butland's quality from that distance.
09:02But Kilgore made it look simple.
09:06And Celtic have a two-goal lead.
09:18Johnston again in a dangerous position,
09:21and Soutar with the evasive action.
09:27Ita from Tavernier trying to drive his side forward.
09:31And now Cerny.
09:33They just need bodies in support.
09:35Messrs and Tavernier are up there,
09:37here is Tavernier, it's a poor touch though.
09:41Time after time as the Johnstons get into this position,
09:44it's another good ball.
09:46But for John Soutar, Kilgore would have had a tap-in.
09:52Taylor releases Maida.
09:55Celtic looking for a third before the interval.
09:58Bernardo in such a lot of room!
10:00Paolo Bernardo, can it be three?
10:03Saved by Butland.
10:12Gorgeous, affording Paolo Bernardo the freedom of Celtic Park there.
10:18It's a fixture that attracts some big names, some big stars.
10:22Bollywood actor Christoph Waltz in attendance for this one.
10:27Bernardo pressed by McCausland, here's Dezsers,
10:31big chance for Dezsers!
10:33And he fluffs his lines.
10:37Bernardo, not napping there by McCausland.
10:46Barrett flares up towards McCausland, he nods it down for proper.
10:52McCausland leaves it to Cerny.
10:57Cerny with the low ball in, Soutar!
11:01And Celtic get it behind for a corner.
11:09Good delivery from Cerny, Soutar's effort blocked.
11:27Xhefti's lost that, Hatati for Kiyoko.
11:30Kiyoko with an opportunity for number three!
11:34Just off target, as he tried to dig Jack Butland.
11:40Rangers wide open again, as Xhefti lost out.
11:44Kiyoko onside that time, Hatati plays him in.
11:52Hatati out to Koon.
11:57Here's Johnston.
11:59Proper in the way.
12:01Breaks for Koon, no.
12:05Johnston once more.
12:07Ball in! Butland had to react at his near-post to keep it out.
12:14Big deflection on this Johnston cross.
12:18Proper almost out into the ball.
12:21Into his own net, as he did in his debut.
12:27Well, this is a big moment, James Forrest about to make his 500th Celtic appearance.
12:35A milestone for the long-serving James Forrest in his 16th season at the club.
12:48Kiyoko picks up.
12:50He's out to Forrest.
12:52Johnston overlapping.
12:54Forrest couldn't quite find him.
12:58Insulting, working ever so hard to win possession back.
13:02And now it's McGregor.
13:04Oh, that is sensational from Calum McGregor!
13:12Captain fantastic, rifles one beyond Jack Butland.
13:19He's already scored a couple of belters this season.
13:23But that one tops the lot.
13:28Rangers loose in possession.
13:31And Calum McGregor only had one thing in his mind.
13:35Unstoppable.
13:45It's Lawrence, three possessors.
13:49Rangers get something back.
13:52Cosland now serving plenty of bodies.
13:55As Tavernier goes for goal, good stop from Schmeichel.
13:58First time he's really been called into action in the entire game.
14:04There's very little to do, Kasper Schmeichel.
14:08Stopped that one well.
14:15Here's Tavernier.
14:17Rangers have something in injury time.
14:20We'll come to Ihegamane, he caught hold of that, it's McCoslin, it must be!
14:23Great save from Schmeichel to preserve the clean sheet.
14:27Now Lawrence.
14:30Rangers should at least have had a consolation here.
14:33Ricocheting around, but Schmeichel making himself big.
14:42Celtic have won again.
14:45Brendan Rodgers has beaten Rangers again for a 15th time in 19 derbies.
14:51They were just too good once again.
14:55The champions in title-winning form at Celtic Park.
15:00It finishes Celtic three, Rangers nil.
15:06Didn't start the game great.
15:08I thought we gave Rangers comfort in that first ten minutes of the game.
15:12Positionally, we were just that fraction deep when we wanted to put pressure on them.
15:20But then once we broke through, we had the goal disallowed, which looked a little bit harsh.
15:26How we played then through that pressure was a fantastic goal.
15:29From there, attacking-wise, very, very impressive.
15:33But also keeping that defensive mentality to keep a clean sheet and typified Kasper at the end.
15:38But a fantastic atmosphere.
15:41Really, really good performance.
15:43Delighted with that.
15:44Losing 3-0 is very hard.
15:47But we didn't reward ourselves in that way.
15:51We started as the best team in the first 10-12 minutes with two clear, clear chances.
15:58Shots from 10 metres just in front of goal.
16:04A free shot and then the header of Rabi also afterwards.
16:08You need to take these moments if you want to win old firm games, that's clear.
16:13Celtic imperious Rangers vanquished a Celtic victory in this fixture, becoming a bit predictable.
16:20Mark Wilson, what did you most enjoy about the way Celtic played today?
16:25I think there's just a clear identity surrounding Celtic.
16:28A vision that I think everyone buys into and it's been evident since pre-season.
16:33Through the start of the season and into a game like today.
16:36But they've got unselfish players that do the hard work on and off the ball.
16:41And they've got players that look to play forward at every opportunity.
16:44I think that was evident throughout the 90 minutes this afternoon.
16:47Billy Dodds, what did you least enjoy about the way Rangers played today?
16:52I think the mentality when Celtic got their offside goal.
16:56They froze and they didn't handle it after that because they'd started ever so well.
17:01We'll touch on in the next few minutes.
17:03But they were just as if they'd got the rabbit in the headlights.
17:07They didn't know where to go in the game.
17:09Celtic are going to pin you back at times, you've got to handle those moments.
17:12Rangers didn't, Jonathan.
17:14You mentioned a good start from Rangers, Billy.
17:16And it was a good start, the first 10 minutes or so.
17:19They really tried hard, didn't they, to nullify Callum McGregor?
17:23Well, they left the 10 attacking player out, Lawrence.
17:26And they've tried that we can't, well it's not worked.
17:29This time they've flipped it and they've gone with a more defensive type player.
17:32Dearman, they can get forward as well.
17:34But you can see, he's so caught up with getting after McGregor.
17:37Nothing comes of this one.
17:39Cherney just puts it out of the park.
17:41But the intent was there and the intensity was on top of it.
17:44And they really started well.
17:46I'm giving them the first 9-10 minutes, that was it for Rangers.
17:49You can see him scanning left, scanning right over the shoulder.
17:52Where is he? Gets a grip of McGregor at times.
17:55And it gave the rest of the Rangers team the momentum
17:58to put a little squeeze on.
18:00And Celtic ended up passing it out of the park on that occasion.
18:03They created a couple of chances.
18:05Diamandy coming off of McGregor on that occasion.
18:08Trying to get back on him, but Barron's up with him, pressing.
18:11There's Gefte on the switch, Matondo, sorry, on the switch.
18:14Tavenier picks him out, this is a great chance, it was flagged for offside.
18:17But Rangers were really bright in that opening 9 or 10 minutes.
18:20They really were. And it was a momentum grower.
18:23But as soon as Celtic scored that offside goal, they were done.
18:27I can't believe their mentality, as I say.
18:30And this was the best chance. It's a brilliant ball in.
18:33Matondo should score, and they missed that as well.
18:36But you've got to have a better mentality when Celtic come at you and Rangers didn't.
18:39Absolutely. Rangers' good start obviously wouldn't last, Mark.
18:42And some of the Celtic interplay, the passing,
18:45it's scintillating to watch and it would slice Rangers open at times.
18:48Yeah, well, Billy's right to concentrate in the middle of the pitch,
18:51but I always thought the wide areas were going to be key
18:54You look at that, Alistair Johnson just off the back of Matondo
18:57and cuts it back. Tavenier, you know, he's only looking ahead of him.
19:00He has no idea where Maida is there.
19:03And it happened time and time again.
19:06But if you're Philippe Clement, you're looking for your wide guy
19:09to do a job and track Alistair Johnson.
19:12By the way, it's brilliant from Celtic. Only three players in that area, 3v3.
19:15You know, and it's those repetitive patterns of play
19:18that everybody knows and understands
19:22that gets Celtic so much joy in those areas.
19:25Absolutely. Maida, he just gave Tavenier a torrid time all afternoon, Billy.
19:28He did.
19:31I mean, on that occasion, when it was cut back in between Maida and Kiyoko as well,
19:34they had so many chances.
19:37Once they got their first chance and then they got their goal,
19:40there was chance after chance.
19:43But Tavenier has to deepen at times when there's no pressure on the ball.
19:46He did, didn't he, get caught ball-watching?
19:49Once you get in behind you and the cutbacks are there,
19:52he can't go and mark space, which he does. He must find a man.
19:55How big a problem is that for Rangers now?
19:58I mean, it happens in every Old Firm match, it feels like.
20:01Yeah, and listen, it's going to come his way.
20:04For me, James Tavenier, with his stats, should never be questioned.
20:07All the goals, all the assists.
20:10But he is. There's a debate to be had by the Rangers fans.
20:13Some of them are not having him.
20:17I honestly think, when you see him in this fixture,
20:20time and time again, it falls on the manager then to make a big decision.
20:23He struggles in this fixture against Maida
20:26and it was proven again today, his positional play.
20:29Time and time again, we've not shown it there,
20:32over the top or through, between him and Suter,
20:35too much space and Maida has a field day.
20:38And it just yields the same results.
20:41So it's up to the manager to withdraw him from that situation,
20:45I think I've run out of superlatives for Kiyoko Furahashi when it comes to movement.
20:48It's just phenomenal to have a player with these qualities in the Scottish game, Mark.
20:51He lights up the final third, in fact, everywhere on the pitch.
20:54Well, you look at him there, Proper and Suter doesn't know where he is.
20:57He comes short to length in the play and you see Suter there,
21:00just having a point at him and telling Proper to pick him up.
21:03Proper thinks he's got him, but he's off the back again.
21:06And that one doesn't come to anything.
21:09But it just highlights he's on the move constantly,
21:13any time Carter Vickers got the ball, look at him short there,
21:16Proper's thinking, will I go in with him? He spins and he goes in behind.
21:19Carter Vickers should play him in there because he's right in between
21:22those two centre forwards and he just buzzes about.
21:25Look at this position, good players find space on the pitch
21:28and he just scans there now, Proper's maybe five yards off him.
21:31He turns, he's got enough time, but it's the awareness here
21:34to see that Butlin's in the wrong position.
21:37Butlin's too far over and he slots it in.
21:40Suter's got the tails up, haven't they? And Taylor wants it.
21:4321 metres because Zefti's high up, because he thinks Rangers are on the attack.
21:46They nick it, Bernardo's on the run,
21:49so Proper has to, he realises, I've got it deep in here.
21:52And that allows Kyogo to stride forward and open up the foot
21:56and put the laces through it with a little bit of bend.
21:59And as Matt says, Butlin's probably kicking himself
22:02because he's away to his right and he's never recovering.
22:05Yeah, absolutely. I have to do a Team of the Week for the BBC Sport website
22:09and I must admit, I'd penciled in Callum McGregor's name before the match today
22:13and he ran the show, didn't he, Billy?
22:16He did. I said about that, Diamandi switching midfield,
22:21three solid defensive-type players, although, as I said,
22:24Diamandi could get forward and they started well,
22:27but then McGregor started doing things differently, didn't he, Matt?
22:30I think he shows a bit of everything. He shows driving the team forward,
22:34he shows his work rate getting back and nicking the ball.
22:37Here, composure, that forward passing I'm talking about, there you go.
22:41Great way to pass through to Maeda.
22:43He just epitomises everything about Celtic and there was a turning point
22:47because up until that point, Diamandi, like Billy says,
22:50was tight on McGregor, but good players, like I just said there,
22:53find space or ways to get space and he runs off the back of him
22:57and that really lit a fire under Celtic.
22:59And here you see what he's done best this season.
23:03He's scored one at Hibbs like this, one at St Minnan like this,
23:06but look at Maeda's work rate there.
23:07That's the difference with Celtic players, to win the ball back,
23:10but then you need the quality, don't you?
23:12And that little touch just to the side of Sterling
23:15is a touch of class and he gets it on target.
23:18That epitomises Celtic, doesn't it, their work rate,
23:20but you think Butlin's getting this, if it doesn't get a deflection,
23:23they don't care, do they?
23:25Did you see him at the first goal? No, he's not getting there, trust me.
23:28What a strike it is from the Celtic captain and what a leader.
23:31Wonderful performance, wonderful goal.
23:34Celtic supercharged right now and they look hot favourites,
23:38you'd have to say, to win the premiership title.
23:41A negative perception was the phrase used by Philippe Clement
23:44before this match, Billy Dodds.
23:47He still feels that they can win the league.
23:49I'm not sure many Rangers fans will share that optimism.
23:52Where does this result leave Philippe Clement, would you say, and Rangers?
23:55How tough a season do you think this might be for Rangers?
23:57Well, on the evidence of today, there's a big gap,
24:00but he's got to recruit, get his new signings fit
24:03and the pressure will come on him.
24:05When you're an old firm manager
24:07and you don't win an old firm game or get a result,
24:10you feel the pressure and he knew that before the game today.
24:13He was saying, you know, this could flip in an instant
24:15if we can get a result here today,
24:17but it was the way and the manner they lost the game.
24:20He's got to be careful that the run doesn't go on
24:23and he keeps on losing old firm games or he'll be asked the question.
24:25It's as simple as that.
24:26Mark, a former Celtic player,
24:28you'll clearly be pleased with the result.
24:30How many points do you think Celtic could win the title by this season?
24:34I'm assuming you think Celtic will win the title.
24:36Well, it's early doors, of course,
24:38but how can you argue with it at this moment in time?
24:40They look unstoppable.
24:42I would even argue this team just now under Brendan Rodgers
24:45looks better than potentially the Invincibles.
24:48I'm just talking about the full package,
24:50the work rate, the selfless running that comes into this side,
24:53how dynamic, how quick they are,
24:55and that's the main point, the speed of play.
24:58Much improved from last season.
25:00Brendan Rodgers is getting a tune out of everyone in his squad at the minute.
25:03So you've dodged my question, but you think Celtic will win the title?
25:06I do.
25:07Okay.
