Indonesia's president hails Pope Francis' visit 'historical'

Indonesian President Joko Widodo conveyed a welcome speech to the head of the worldwide Catholic Church, Pope Francis, who arrived in the republic on Tuesday (Sept 3).

The pope is on the first leg of an ambitious 12-day Asia-Pacific tour.

00:15This visit is a very historic visit, which was planned a few years ago, but was postponed
00:24due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
00:28This is the third visit after the 6th visit of His Holiness Pope Paul in 1970,
00:38and the 2nd visit of His Holiness John Paul II in 1989.
00:47Indonesia and the Vatican have the same commitment to promote peace and fraternity,
00:56and to ensure prosperity for humanity.
00:59The Pope is scheduled to meet Jokowi and the country's political leaders
01:03on Wednesday at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta,
01:06followed by an interfaith gathering at Istiklal Mosque
01:09and a grand-scale mass at the city's stadium on Thursday.
01:13He will then visit East Timor, Singapore and Papua New Guinea.
