Peterborough MP Andrew Pakes urges the the owner of the city's Great Northern Hotel to get involved in talks about the venue's future in a regenerated Station Quarter
Transcript
00:00It's become a sad sight at the heart of the city.
00:04If the stations could be our gateway, we need the ambition of the Great Northern to be part of it.
00:08But we also need, that's why I think that the first offer is a hand of friendship to the current owners
00:13to come and talk to the city, see what they want to bring to the table.
00:17If they're not willing to do that, we can look at stronger measures to get hold of the hotel
00:22at a fair price so we can develop it and make it part of our future.
00:27To me the important bit is the Great Northern plot needs to be involved
00:31and I would love the Great Northern frontage and the Great Northern building to be part of the future.
00:36Now if you're really ambitious, you could keep the frontage but you could move it back a whole metre
00:43and create a bigger square in front of the station.
00:45For the current owners to come to the table and talk to the council and developers and others
00:53about what they could bring to the situation, I think it would be lovely to start the ball rolling as quickly as possible.
01:03My view and others' view, if the current owners don't want to play ball, then we should look at CPOing it.
01:09That would be a negotiation over what the cost is.
01:12The new government is changing the law on propulsory purchase orders to strengthen the hand of local authorities
01:20in terms of the cost of CPOing it.
01:23It needs to be at market value, which will be different to necessarily what people want to sell at.
