For her heroic deed, she was awarded India's highest honour for valour, the Ashoka Chakra, in 1987, along with other posthumous awards, both Indian and Pakistani, and American. Her story inspired Ram Madhvani's 2016 Bollywood film Pan Am Flight 73 (Neerja). Neerja's funeral was performed a few days after the incident, with a private ceremony, her body was cremated and her ashes were scattered.
