00:00They say that love is blind. In her case, she wished it was.
00:04Here's a look at Nekatoi's Universal Monsters, the Bride of Frankenstein,
00:07Ultimate Frankenstein's Monster with Chair.
00:30Frankenstein's Monster lives!
00:39Recreate iconic scenes from the 1935 sequel, The Bride of Frankenstein, with this deluxe set.
00:43NECA's 7-inch scale Ultimate Action Figure features new sculpts
00:46to reflect Boris Karloff's second appearance as the monster,
00:49as well as a restraining chair complete with wrist shackles and real chains.
00:53Accessories also include a loaf of bread, mug, bowl, and interchangeable heads and hands.
00:57Comes in display-friendly window box packaging with opening front flap.
01:01Poor Frank has been trying to find love, and his love's been trying to find the door.
01:05Just before we get a closer look, though, at the brand-new Bride of Frankenstein,
01:08Frankenstein with Chair, although you don't see a chair right now.
01:11You'll see in a second.
01:12First, I'd like to thank the folks over at NECA that did provide the sample we could have a look at.
01:16It is right now a pre-order over on their site for $59.99.
01:20Since the time of doing this review as well,
01:22NECA has announced that they're planning to do a black-and-white version of the Bride of Frankenstein,
01:26though it will not come included with the chair.
01:28That being said, though, the figure's going to stand at about 8 inches in height,
01:32or the Bride of Frankenstein's Frankenstein stands at 20 centimeters tall.
01:37As for monsters, well, we could get many, if you consider that is three to be many.
01:40The mold that you're looking at right now has been used two other times.
01:43The obvious one is the colorized that you're looking at right now.
01:45There's also one that's been released in the black-and-white, the BMW release.
01:48And there's also, as well, the glow-in-the-dark Remco version of Frankenstein's monster.
01:52While the mold's been moved around a lot,
01:54surprisingly, not a lot of the mold's been moved over to this version of Frankenstein.
01:57In fact, the only thing I'm really seeing that looks identical to one another
02:00is probably the tops of the thighs, the lower legs,
02:02while the top of his trunks, for example, and his boots are completely brand-new sculpts.
02:06We're going to get down to the horrific details in a second.
02:09Obviously, if you're going to be talking about the Bride of Frankenstein,
02:11you're going to be wanting to talk about his bride,
02:13bringing in, of course, the colorized version of the Bride of Frankenstein.
02:16When we do eventually get the black-and-white release of this guy,
02:19which I think is slated to release in January of 2025,
02:22then, of course, I'll be bringing in the black-and-white to be displayed with that version of the monster.
02:26Now, seeing that the colorized version of Frankenstein's monster
02:29does, in fact, come included with a restraining chair just right over here.
02:32I think right over here, for the black-and-white release in 2025,
02:35they could have included a tabletop.
02:37After all, the monster's sitting down for a meal.
02:39It'd like to be at least a place where you can actually store and display all those various things.
02:43Like, for example, the figure comes included with a bowl of soup.
02:46No spoon to be found anywhere, guys.
02:48This guy sips solely from the rim.
02:50You can see, in fact, it actually looks like there's a little bit of dirt on the end of this.
02:53I think it's just the way it came off the mold like this.
02:55I'm not sure really what kind of soup this would be.
02:57A pea soup, perhaps?
02:59I hope it certainly isn't French onion soup. I can't stand French onion soup.
03:02A good pea soup, though, from time to time, especially on a cold winter's day.
03:06Yeah, yeah, sign me up for that.
03:08The figure also comes included with a big loaf of bread.
03:10Now, realistically, no human being should be sitting down for this size of loaf of bread,
03:14even if it's going to be something you'd be dipping inside the soup.
03:16But the loaf of bread, for what it is, is actually quite impressive.
03:19I'm surprised that I'm actually spending so much time praising NECA Toys for sculpting such a good, solid loaf of bread.
03:25I mean, it does have a crust on the end.
03:27I mean, short of just having a little bit of butter,
03:29you need to slather this thing up with a little bit of butter.
03:32That looks like a pretty impressive-looking loaf of bread.
03:34Of course, he does have hands for holding all these things.
03:37Frankenstein does have these gripping hands, so you can take the loaf of bread.
03:40You kind of have to just really wedge them in there.
03:42He holds it just okay, depending, of course, how he really wants to eat the meal.
03:47And then he also comes in clear with a mug.
03:49Now, the thing with the mug, though, is that you don't really have a proper hand.
03:53I suppose you could really use the relaxed hands,
03:55or you could really just kind of cup two of the fingers at least inside the handle of the mug
04:00and have the monster displayed that way as well.
04:02Speaking, I guess, of the other hands, the figure does also come in clear with this smoke hand.
04:07Mmm, smoke.
04:09One of probably the only few times we're actually getting ourselves a NECA release
04:13where the figure does come in clear with a cigarette.
04:16I'm trying to think also as well.
04:17Dint Dutch, I believe Dutch from the Predator line, also came in clear with a smoke as well.
04:22But Frankenstein's monster does come in clear with this.
04:24And then, of course, he does come in clear with decent enough head sculpts
04:27that are really suitable for those specific scenes.
04:30Like, for example, he does have a defaulted head that is pretty much just a more neutral expression.
04:34But then he has this head, which I think is the best one for the smoke hand.
04:38Smoke, good.
04:40Of course, we will be swapping out these things, though, in a second.
04:43The figure also comes in clear with the shock of realizing
04:46that the person that's been assigned to him as a bride finds him absolutely repulsive.
04:50Mmm.
04:52Stellar-looking sculpts on all of these, by the way.
04:55And by the way, though, the head sculpt that we start things with
04:57when you get this guy out of the packaging is just a neutral expression.
05:01One of the notable things, though, about the Bride of Frankenstein, Boris Karloff, makeup
05:05is that if you look at his hairline, the hairline continues to recede.
05:09It happens to all of us.
05:10The coloring, as you can see, though, is a lot grayer this instance as well.
05:13And he has a lot more staples on the sides of his face.
05:16Whereas this one, he only would have had it on the top.
05:18Still, though, has the bolts on the sides of his neck.
05:20Really, really like this head sculpt quite a lot.
05:23We're going to get, again, to comparing the two bodies in a second.
05:26If you did, though, want to swap out the head sculpts.
05:28Say you want to go with the shrieking one or like kind of,
05:30oh, she doesn't like me.
05:32Oh.
05:33You can go with this one.
05:34Or again, if you want to display him with this head sculpt, you know what?
05:36We'll go with this one for at least right now.
05:38We're going to hold on to the torso for dear life.
05:40Just kind of wiggle the head back and forth until it finally frees itself from the post.
05:43And then take the head that we want to use and just pop it in place.
05:46Just as a side detail, though, just before we start putting heads on tops of necks,
05:50I want to show you, though, they spent just as much time sculpting an area
05:53that eventually will be covered, really, by a head sculpt.
05:56Again, we're just going to pop this in place.
05:59Now, one of the initial ideas I was kind of thinking in prior to knowing
06:03that NECOTOYS was going to be releasing a black and white version of Frankenstein's monster,
06:06I thought to myself, you know, if they had found a way to have the neck be removable,
06:10like, say, for example, each of the heads came with each one neck,
06:13you just pop off everything, you can then pop off the forearms,
06:16and then they could have given you black and white things that you can then have swapped out.
06:19So, essentially, you would buy, then, one figure, and you can choose which looks you want to have.
06:23B&W, black and white, or a colorized version.
06:26Obviously, NEC has already thought well in advance.
06:28They are releasing, again, that black and white release in January.
06:32Nice looking head sculpt, though, on this one.
06:34I just want to make sure I've got it all the way on there.
06:36The only thing I would say, though, is that the coloring of the neck
06:38doesn't quite jive to the coloring that they did to the face.
06:41Again, whether you want to go with this head sculpt,
06:43whether you want to go with this head sculpt,
06:45you can also go with this one, as well.
06:47Fantastic paint work on all the three, though.
06:51Of course, this whole time I've been talking away and spending some time, of course, with Frankenstein.
06:56The one thing that you probably have been seeing this whole time
06:58is obviously his restraining chair, which just happens to be over here.
07:02There was some assembly that was required.
07:04Not the most extensive of assembly.
07:06Essentially, what it is is just the stone block that has the backing.
07:10This is all one piece when you get it out of the packaging.
07:12Then you've got the flooring.
07:14Basically, you take the top half,
07:16and then you're going to fit them inside these grooves.
07:20Now, I will say, the few times that I've already done this,
07:22you may already start to see that there's stress developing here on the plastic.
07:26It at least is one of those grips that once you snap it in place,
07:30it's secure enough, but then it does seem like you can easily remove it afterwards.
07:34If you're somebody that down the road decides ...
07:36I want to make sure I've got that all the way on there.
07:38There we go.
07:40There.
07:42Once you get it all in there, even though it's probably a little unnerving of a snap sound,
07:45once you get that in place, down the road, if you find yourself running out of space,
07:50it seems to be the kind of base that you can remove it.
07:52Although, you probably have already seen,
07:54it starts to develop that stress mark, though,
07:56between the clip and essentially where that's plugging in place.
07:58You can see it right there starting to develop.
08:01The chair itself does also have some shackles.
08:04Now, if you're looking at this ...
08:06Let's go back to this first of all.
08:08So, you've got the belts here that run to the top.
08:10Now, they don't actually connect to anything.
08:12If you're looking at the back of them, they're basically just dangling chains.
08:14So good is the sculpt even on the back of this as well.
08:17It looks like real wood.
08:19Again, you've got the loose chains that dangle on the back.
08:21Now, these are cold to the touch.
08:23I wonder if these are actually made of metal.
08:25Now, they said real metal, real chains.
08:27If real chains then translates to real metal chains,
08:29nice work on NECA's part.
08:31But, basically, you've got these heavy chains
08:33that are draping on the back of this.
08:35Then, if you look at it from the front,
08:37you've got the restraining collar,
08:39so Frankie's head is going to go in between here.
08:41And then you've got a chain that runs across
08:43with a big, large bolt lock on the side.
08:45I guess that would be a key lock.
08:47This doesn't need to be removed at all.
08:49In fact, you don't even have to worry at all
08:51of trying to detach this in order to get Frankie up there.
08:53All you really have to do is worry about
08:55the rest of his head.
08:57You can bend the legs.
08:59You can bend the knees.
09:01And then, when you get him in a good situated position,
09:03all you really then have to do is take
09:05Frankenstein's head and slide it up the top there.
09:07And, pretty much, he's then good to go.
09:09The only thing you really want to do
09:11is, obviously, restrain his arms.
09:13So, they also include, as well,
09:15these long chains that bolt then to the front.
09:17So, you've got a hole here.
09:19You've got a hole here.
09:21All right, let me show you.
09:23You can take this part that has the larger looplet.
09:25And, that's going to just...
09:27I'm doing this all while holding Frankenstein
09:29to make sure he's not falling.
09:31You're going to bolt this in place.
09:33You don't even really have to push far down, either.
09:35These actually slide fairly easily into the holes.
09:37In fact, they're even easier, as well, to remove.
09:39And, once that's in place,
09:41the only thing left that you really have to do
09:43is then you have to take Frankenstein's hands off.
09:45Because, what you get is,
09:47on the ends of these,
09:49you get these little hand pieces.
09:51And, they're going to fit over his wrist.
09:53But, for obvious reasons,
09:55they're not going to be able to fit over his hands.
09:57If they fit over his hand,
09:59that was poor planning on the part.
10:01Because, obviously, Frankenstein
10:03would just be able to slide his hands out of it.
10:05So, what you'll have to do
10:07is take his hand off.
10:09Then, you'll take the collared piece,
10:11the cuff piece, I should say.
10:13And then, you're just going to plug that in place,
10:15take the hand,
10:17and then just put it back where you found it.
10:19And then, Frankenstein is shackled.
10:21And, well, he's obviously not going to be going anywhere.
10:23If you've seen the movie,
10:25you probably already know he goes other places, as well.
10:27So, we're going to go ahead and actually just detach everything.
10:29We're going to slide Franken back off from the chair.
10:31We'll just leave the chair off to the side
10:33so you have at least something to look at
10:35while this guy continues to talk.
10:37Put the hand back in place.
10:39And, seeing as I also was talking
10:41about the hands earlier,
10:43let's go back to the smoke can.
10:45Where did I put the smoke can?
10:47I think I have it over here.
10:49There it is. There it is right there.
10:51If you guys did want to see what that looks like,
10:53I'm just going to also remove the hand.
10:55And, we'll just plug this in place.
10:57Luckily, it's one of those accessories
10:59that they thought well enough in advance
11:01that instead of trying to worry about
11:03getting the smoke actually in between
11:05his fingers and his thumb,
11:07NECA thought, you know what,
11:09if we were buying these figures for ourselves,
11:11we wouldn't want to have to worry about
11:13having to try to fit the cigarette
11:15in between his fingers and his thumb.
11:17So, instead of that,
11:19what they did just simply instead
11:21was they molded the cigar or the smoke
11:23actually in between his fingers and his thumb.
11:25So, that's not going anywhere
11:27and you can always have it then on display
11:29with Frankenstein.
11:31Getting though, again,
11:33a closer look at the head skull,
11:35I know we already spent a little bit of time
11:37talking about it.
11:39Just, you know, again,
11:41between though the two Frankensteins
11:43at least because I thought it made a lot of the details
11:45pop just a lot more.
11:47Between though the two head sculpts,
11:49I feel like I'm kind of gravitating a little bit more
11:51to liking the Bride of Frankenstein look of Frankenstein
11:53just a little bit more.
11:55First of all, I like more the head sculpt that they sculpted here.
11:57I think there's a lot more personality
11:59maybe perhaps to his face.
12:01There's just a whole lot more going on.
12:03Now, when it comes to sculpting for his body,
12:05you may already be able to see that
12:07there isn't really a lot that gets shared between the two.
12:09I would say maybe if anything,
12:11it is obviously a brand new sculpt
12:13but perhaps maybe the torso underneath
12:15is one thing that's shared between the two
12:17because this jacket never really needs to open.
12:19I was though surprised to see,
12:21if you look at the top here of where his belt would be,
12:23or I guess his belt wouldn't be there,
12:25but if you see these buttons,
12:27the buttons though are nowhere to be found
12:29on the original release,
12:31if you're looking behind the curtains.
12:33So it looks like they have sculpted
12:35a brand new top of the torso
12:37or top section here of his waist.
12:39Now, one thing that I did not like
12:41when it came to the Bride of Frankenstein
12:43is not making maybe Boris look so much
12:45like he was walking around in stilted shoes.
12:47So while the original one would have had
12:49clearly very much an indication here
12:51where he's got platform boots,
12:53the new version of Frankenstein, as you can see,
12:55smooths those over so it looks like
12:57it's just one continued piece of shoe.
12:59Of course, on the bottoms of this,
13:01the figure does have still pegs
13:03on the bottoms of his feet,
13:05but again, it doesn't look like there's a whole lot
13:07going on with this guy.
13:09If you're familiar with that Frankenstein,
13:11then you're familiar with this Frankenstein
13:13when it comes to his levels of posability.
13:15First, the head's going to be on a ball joint
13:17so it allows the head to rotate all the way around.
13:19I realize, though, I don't have that head
13:21all the way on there.
13:23The head's going to look down,
13:25the head's going to look up,
13:27and you can also move it back and forth.
13:29In addition, though, to that,
13:31and this is one of the reasons
13:33why I was kind of thinking,
13:35well, you could have gotten black and white parts
13:37and then you could have gotten essentially a two-for-one.
13:39Instead, what they've done instead
13:41is they're going to be releasing
13:43a standalone black and white release of him.
13:45Anyways, what I was saying, though,
13:47is that he does have a ball joint here,
13:49he does have, though, a ball joint
13:51at the base of the neck,
13:53and between those two,
13:55there's a fair bit of freedom that Frankie has.
13:57As for his shoulders, now, they come out,
13:59they don't fully come out at 90 degrees
14:01without a little bit of forcing.
14:03His shoulder joints were really tight,
14:05and that's not a bad thing at all.
14:07Arms rotate all the way around,
14:09you can do, yes, that on both sides as well.
14:11He now has torn sleeves,
14:13the original one never had that,
14:15but there's still a single hinge on the elbow
14:17that allows the forearm to rotate back and forth.
14:19Smoke, good.
14:21You can also rotate his hand all the way around.
14:23His upper torso is still going to be on a ball joint
14:25that fully rotates.
14:27The legs do split out still, easy and fine.
14:29You can move the legs forward,
14:31and of course, still like the original one,
14:33there's the ankle pivot back and forth,
14:35and a decent enough ankle rocker there as well.
14:37Yeah, really like this one a lot.
14:39And, you know, again,
14:41looking at this essentially,
14:43when I was first seeing this online,
14:45I was kind of asking myself this question,
14:47how many of these parts from this version of Frankenstein,
14:49because it's somewhat ironic,
14:51the fact that you're kind of using parts from other bodies,
14:53and you're creating yourself a brand new monster.
14:55Funny though enough, they didn't actually use
14:57nearly enough of the parts that I thought they were going to be doing.
14:59I mean, it looks, again, like this part section of his belt
15:01is completely, I keep calling it a belt,
15:03this section, the top of his pants,
15:05is very different than what we got in the original release.
15:07Again, it's only really, it seems to be the thighs,
15:09the lower legs, the boots are completely different,
15:11completely brand new arms, and of course,
15:13the obvious thing is the fact that they have a brand new,
15:15different head sculpt as well.
15:17Bringing back in the bride, and I realize now,
15:19when I should have brought in the bride,
15:21I should have brought her in with a screaming face.
15:23I think perhaps if she's not looking back,
15:25I think she probably will be okay.
15:27I'm going to likely display this guy with, of course,
15:29the restraining chair. When eventually,
15:31we do get that black and white treatment of him
15:33in January of next year,
15:35then I'm going to probably have that one displayed
15:37with the black and white bride of Frankenstein,
15:39and then having her, of course, screaming at poor Frankenstein.
15:41If that's the case, then of course,
15:43I'm going to bring back that head sculpt.
15:45Oh, come on.
15:47Love the head sculpts
15:49on all three of these.
15:51You probably would be also asking as well,
15:53could you use this head for this neck here?
15:55It seems to be the case that you can.
15:57Although, with obviously the way that his outfit
15:59gets a little bit more torn and tattered in the follow-up sequel,
16:01I'm not really sure why you would need to start
16:03to swap the heads with the original Frankenstein
16:05we got from before.
16:07Now, out of his chair, with a smoke in one hand
16:09and a tall mug of drink in the other.
16:11That mug, by the way, fits fine in his hand.
16:13I don't know why I was struggling so much to try to get it.
16:15He was actually trying to hold it like he was holding a teacup.
16:17But no, that hand is fine
16:19for holding not only the loaf of bread,
16:21which again, some incredible work.
16:23Can I just say this?
16:25Some fine work on NECA's sculptor's part
16:27to sculpt the bread as realistic as they did.
16:29It's one of the best loafs of bread.
16:31Probably is the only loaf of bread
16:33we've ever gotten with a figure.
16:35But some fine work though on NECA's part.
16:37The figure does come included, as you can see,
16:39with a restraining chair.
16:41You can choose for yourself if you want to have the figure
16:43actually sitting in the chair or not.
16:45Now, obviously though, as mentioned, the black and white release
16:47that we're going to be getting in January
16:49is going to basically have all the following accessories
16:51that you're going to see, except for the chair.
16:53So if you want to get your hands on the chair,
16:55the only obvious way that you're going to be able to get it
16:57is getting this release here.
16:59Between the restraining chair,
17:01the lab table that we did get from before,
17:03and then the recently looked at Remco version
17:05of the Monsterizer,
17:07there's a lot of cool dioramas going on
17:09for this dead guy.
17:11I think between this guy and the original release
17:13of Frankenstein's monster, I think I like this one just a little bit more.
17:15There's a lot more personality going on in this face,
17:17whether you choose to go with this face
17:19or the other two that the figure comes included with.
17:21As of right now, it shows as a pre-order
17:23on NECA's site, but I think you can also
17:25find this one right now in stores
17:27or on their online sites.
17:29Big thank you once again to the folks over at NECA Toys
17:31that did provide this sample of the brand new Universal Monsters
17:33Bride of Frankenstein, Frankenstein's monster
17:35and his restraining chair.
17:37Yes.
