00:00Hey kids, I hope you can help me, because I really could use your help.
00:10We had donut day at the airport and I brought the donuts.
00:13I brought enough for everyone, but they did not get divided equally.
00:17Now some of the other pilots are not too happy and I am being chased through the sky.
00:21Do you think you could help me learn about division so everyone is happy?
00:29Thank you, this will really help me out.
00:31Here we go, barrel roll!
00:37To start learning about division we need to recognize something first.
00:42Here we have an addition sign and a multiplication sign.
00:45Addition and multiplication are similar because they both build up.
00:49If we add we are putting more in and if we multiply we are putting more in as well.
00:55Subtraction is repeated addition which we have already learned about.
01:00Subtraction and division are similar as well.
01:03Subtraction takes away and division takes away.
01:06Division is actually repeated subtraction.
01:11In this example we have 15 donuts and there are 3 hungry pilots that want to share them
01:16equally.
01:19We want to find out how many donuts each pilot can have and make it equal for all of them.
01:25The 3 in this problem is the divisor.
01:27Because 3 is the divisor we will divide the donuts into 3 groups.
01:32We will do this by starting with 3 boxes and put 1 donut in each box until they are gone.
01:46Can you tell me how many donuts are in each box?
01:52There are 5 donuts in each group or box.
01:57Wait a minute that seemed too easy is this correct?
02:01We started with 15 donuts and are dividing them among 3 people.
02:05By creating 3 groups and distributing the donuts evenly we find that each pilot gets
02:105 donuts.
02:15This is amazing stuff and not as scary as I thought it would be.
02:19Another amazing thing is that if we know our fact families in multiplication we see
02:22that 5 multiplied by 3 equals 15.
02:28Let's look at another way to do division using a number line.
02:34Here we have 18 divided by 3 and we need to find the answer using this number line.
02:39Think of this problem as 18 donuts that need to be divided by 3 people.
02:44We are going to start at 18 and count backwards 3 numbers until we get to 0.
02:49Each time we count 3 numbers we will put a dot on the number line to show we counted
02:533.
02:55Starting at 18 we count back 1, 2, 3 and put a dot, 1, 2, 3 and a dot, 1, 2, 3 and a dot,
03:071, 2, 3 and a dot, 1, 2, 3 and another dot, 1, 2, 3 and the last dot and we are at 0.
03:17Now we can go back and hop from dot to dot and count the hops.
03:23One hop, 2 hops, 3 hops, 4 hops, 5 hops, 6 hops and we are at 0.
03:34The answer to 18 divided by 3 is 6 so this would mean that each of the 3 people would
03:39get 6 donuts.
03:42Wow I bet you did not know that there were that many ways to divide.
03:46This is amazing stuff and now I can go land and help divide the donuts equally so everyone
03:51is happy.
03:53Thank you for your help we will see you next time.
03:55Goodbye.
