00:00All right, so everything here and up is good,
00:02here and up is good, all right?
00:03Protect yourself at all times, obey my command.
00:05Touch them up. Let's go, guys.
00:10Yeah, we take a look at the tail of the tape.
00:13John Erobio and Joel Monriquez.
00:15Many people consider John Erobio
00:17to be one of the best prospects in the sport of boxing.
00:21But we get another look at him here tonight,
00:24coming off that second round KO win
00:26over Jose Hospital.
00:27In June of this year at the Casino.
00:31Yeah, we got used to seeing John Erobio almost every week.
00:35He had one, two, three, four, four fights
00:39in about a six-week span in the springtime,
00:42and then took the summer off.
00:44So for him to go three months between fights,
00:46that's like almost like being on sabbatical, Corey.
00:48This is one of the busiest fighters out here.
00:50Joel Monriquez coming into this fight
00:52off a win over Jesus Denef,
00:54who, of course, is a great fighter.
00:56Win over Jesus Denef, who, of course, we just saw.
00:59Scored a six-round split decision.
01:04It says here in my notes about Monriquez,
01:06effective versus slowish, reckless pressure fighters,
01:10which might explain why he did so well against Denef,
01:13but also explains why he has a tough, tough task
01:16in John Erobio.
01:18You see the foot speed of Monriquez
01:20trying to work his way to the inside,
01:22but you're gonna pay a heavy tax
01:24trying to do that against John Erobio.
01:26As you see Erobio banging to the body
01:28a couple of moments ago.
01:31Monriquez leaning in a little bit too aggressively,
01:34leading with the head.
01:42Chopping right hand there from Erobio a moment ago.
01:45Should mention, too, just a really difficult night
01:48for Monriquez overall,
01:50and not to linger on what happened in our opening contest,
01:54but Monriquez, training partners and close friends
01:58with Carlos Roner, they're from the same town.
02:01Monriquez also friends with Canguro Gonzalez,
02:05Christian Gonzalez, who we've seen here on our airwaves,
02:08who tragically passed away on August 12th.
02:10So Monriquez fighting tonight with a very heavy heart.
02:14El Canguro was a past opponent of John Erobio
02:17back in March, and a guy that sort of exemplifies
02:24the community, the fighting spirit,
02:25and the stay-ready attitude of a lot of these fighters
02:28from Argentina.
02:30El Canguro, we'll remember, Corey,
02:32worked a full shift as a sanitation worker in Buenos Aires,
02:38got the call at the end of an eight-hour shift,
02:40went to the weigh-in right after that,
02:42and fought that night.
02:43That's right, yeah, he made weight
02:45at the KO Drugs Festival last year
02:48for that fight, and for that fight, made more in one fight
02:51than he did a full year as a sanitation worker.
02:54Our hearts are with the Canguro Gonzalez family,
02:58certainly a tragedy, a tragic loss for the boxing community.
03:05His left hook there from Monriquez,
03:07and Erobio thought about throwing his own.
03:11Yeah, gentlemanly move there from Erobio.
03:13Very sportsmanlike, because it is protect yourself
03:16at all times, and he really could have taken
03:18a home run swing there, and he didn't.
03:24-!
03:25Hey!
03:26-!
03:27-!
03:28-!
03:29-!
03:29-!
03:30-!
03:31-!
03:32-!
03:33-!
03:34-!
03:34-!
03:35-!
03:36-!
03:37-!
03:38-!
03:39-!
03:39-!
03:40-!
03:41-!
03:42-!
03:43-!
03:44-!
03:44-!
03:45-!
03:51Hey, tell our neighbors...
03:53He was a doctor, okay?
03:55He told me...
03:56Alright, but not now, okay?
03:58In the hall.
03:59Don't believe him because he's not,
04:01because he's not here.
04:03I...
04:04The people are here.
04:06Bahn, bah bah bah,
04:06his name's Technology.
04:11Go ahead, step back, expect,
04:12♪
04:16Come on, champion.
04:18♪
04:29Is round two underway?
04:31One thing we notice in the corner, Cory,
04:33is the effect that John Orovio has on people
04:35because Mark Ramsey, if you ask Mark Ramsey
04:37if he speaks Spanish, he will tell you no.
04:40But you heard him in the corner
04:41speaking Spanish to John Orovio,
04:43who does not speak much French.
04:44He's been in Montreal about a year and a half.
04:47But we've seen he and Moreno Fendero were roommates
04:50for a long time until Fendero got married.
04:53So that setup wasn't going to work anymore.
04:55But you will watch Fendero and Orovio speak to each other.
05:00And I asked him, well, how do you guys converse?
05:02You tell me you don't speak French,
05:04he doesn't speak Spanish.
05:05But basically what has happened is,
05:08Orovio being around Moreno Fendero
05:10and obviously being here in Montreal,
05:12he's picked up some French.
05:13But then the people who spend time with Orovio
05:15pick up some Spanish and they meet in the middle.
05:17Look at the effect that Orovio is having.
05:19Enriquez, a hard body shot in that chopping right hand,
05:24has sent him down to a knee.
05:30Enriquez up at the count of about eight and a half.
05:34But Orovio looking to close the show early here once again.
05:41Look at this work from Orovio,
05:43just a whipping uppercut to the body.
05:46And Orovio just going wild here.
05:55And it looks like one of those shots
05:58will be determined to have been low.
06:01And that is a little bit of a lucky break
06:04for Joel Enriquez, if you can call it that.
06:07It is a respite for Joel Enriquez.
06:09And the thing about Joel Enriquez
06:10and the reason he is here is, again, he is a survivor.
06:13He has five losses all by decision.
06:16He has a chin, he knows how to survive.
06:19And Joel Orovio, talking to him yesterday,
06:20I asked him about how he spent his three months off.
06:22He said, well, I went to Colombia,
06:24went back home, visited my family.
06:26Then I got back in the gym and I asked him,
06:28like, what new skills was he working on?
06:31And he said, you're gonna see, you'll see it tomorrow.
06:34I'm calmer, I'm more measured.
06:37Which sounds great in theory.
06:41And you do want a fighter to be able to go the distance,
06:43but what you're seeing too here is vintage Joel Orovio.
06:46When he gets a guy in trouble, he activates.
06:49Enriquez, prior to that knockdown,
06:51had only been knocked down twice in his career.
06:55So still a feat for Orovio to have sent him to the canvas.
06:59And he's looking to do it again here
07:01before the end of the round.
07:07Another big lead left hook.
07:10Move Enriquez across the ring.
07:14Chopping right hands, just don't miss from Orovio.
07:17You see that mid-combination switch in stances.
07:20He's gone southpaw as well.
07:22Down he goes again.
07:24And when John Orovio gets into that flow state,
07:27it is bad news for his opponent.
07:31You see the cornerman climbing the stairs.
07:33They've seen enough.
07:37Again, this is a camp that didn't like what they saw,
07:41understandably, in our opening contest.
07:44And they've stepped in at the right time here
07:47to save their fighter from that man, John Orovio,
07:50who just picked up another knockout victory.
07:54And again, from a guy who told me yesterday
07:57that he was gonna, and this is not to say
07:58that he wasn't measured and composed.
08:01And again, he has a guy in front of him
08:02who is here specifically to go around.
08:05And so we were talking,
08:06when I was talking to Orovio yesterday,
08:08he said this is his first fight at eight rounds.
08:10And I said, well, is your first fight
08:13scheduled for eight rounds?
08:14He said, yes, but you're gonna see
08:15a more measured, calmer, more tactical fighter tomorrow.
08:19He's plenty tactical, he's plenty technical.
08:22But again, once he gets you in trouble,
08:24he sees no reason to keep you around.
08:28Well, he might wanna be calm,
08:29but as we've talked to other fighters,
08:32other personalities in that Mark Ramsey gym,
08:35everyone talks about the competitive spirit
08:38of John Orobio, of that firm belief
08:41that he can beat anyone in the gym,
08:43not in a disrespectful way,
08:44but just the self-confidence that one has to have
08:48if they wanna become an elite fighter.
08:49Absolutely, and you're starting to see
08:51with the physical attributes plus that attitude,
08:56you put those together and you see why people
08:58well beyond Montreal see John Orobio
09:00as a future star in this sport.
09:06Here he is working the body first,
09:08which is a very mature thing to do.
09:09And when we talk about a fighter with knockout power
09:14who is also calmer and more measured and more tactical,
09:17that's one of the ways it manifests itself.
09:20He doesn't go out there and headhunt necessarily.
09:22He starts with the body and works upstairs.
09:27And every time I come to Toronto, Corey,
09:29I meet people, you meet a lot of people
09:33in the city who are from Columbia,
09:34and I talk to them about boxing,
09:35and I ask them if they know about John Orobio.
09:37Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't,
09:39but here in the second deck at Casino Montreal,
09:42you see a couple of fans with a Colombian flag
09:45and some John Orobio t-shirts.
09:46He's starting to make inroads.
09:48He also has a sponsorship, I think,
09:50with the local cafe on the South Shore,
09:53over in, I think, in Longueira, Blossard,
09:54one of those two suburbs.
09:56So he's starting to make inroads in the community here.
09:59I mean, he's here at the casino almost more often
10:02than the Celine Dion impersonator.
10:06Ladies and gentlemen, official time,
10:08two minutes, 54 seconds of round number two.
10:23At the request of the blue corner,
10:25referee Junior Padullo stops the fight,
10:27declaring the winner by TKO, John Orobio!
10:33El Tigre Orobio!
10:40So John Orobio, now 11-0,
10:43that being his 10th knockout in his pro career,
10:47just 20 years of age.
10:50And Morgan, one thing I was thinking about, too,
10:52is Orobio is really illustrative of the plight
10:56of young boxers, even ones who are projected
11:00to become stars, who have good financial backing.
11:03This is a kid from Columbia,
11:05who's living now by himself in Montreal.
11:08And this is an individual sport,
11:09so even though, of course...
