Almost a decade ago, Microsoft developed a brand new default browser that would come preinstalled on all Windows devices. Over those years Microsoft have been tweaking, updating and improving it as technology improves. And now the time has finally come for our Assistive Technology Specialist to check in and see what they've got for us!  If you have a Windows computer, you have Microsoft Edge installed by default. No need to install any extensions like with Chrome. Straight out of the gate, most people will benefit from learning about the Read Aloud function. It includes hundreds of high-quality voices and a variety of accents to choose from. And of course you can instantly translate any text into your native language. Speech controls allow you to increase or decrease the speaker's speed. 00:19Today, we're taking a look at some really cool features in Microsoft Edge.

00:28I know. I was trying out some new things I've learned from a vocal coach,

00:32and I really wanted to try to impress you with my range.

00:35Was it Steven Tyler's vocal coach that's been training you?

00:40Very nice.

00:41Well, yeah, I was impressed, Corey, but I've got to tell you,

00:43you are still not quite as good as the voices in Microsoft Edge

00:47that we're going to be finding out about today.

00:49Yeah, I know. You have been spending some time with Microsoft Edge.

00:52You were saying, we must do a video on Microsoft Edge.

00:56Yes, it's definitely not anything to do with the fact

00:58that we were struggling to think of a topic for today's video.

01:03No, but you did say that there's a lot of cool low-vision features

01:06and some text-to-speech features, which we're going to dive into.

01:09Well, that's the thing, yeah.

01:10There are actually some very good features in Microsoft Edge,

01:13and I want people to be aware, Corey, I'm doing Bill Gates' job for him.

01:51I would actually have to agree with you that their voices are really good,

01:55but I'm hoping maybe you can demonstrate to all of our lovely audience

01:59how the text-to-speech works in Edge.

02:03but you've just got to believe me, everybody.

02:08Okay, let's dive in and take a look.

02:09Microsoft Edge, in case you don't know,

02:11is the browser that's built into Windows, Corey.

02:14You could have Windows 10, you could have Windows 11.

02:17Could you have Windows 8?

02:19Could you? I mean, you could have anything you want.

02:22I don't know if Edge...

02:23I'm not sure what browser Edge started in, honestly.

02:26Don't have Windows 8, though, but do have Windows 10 or 11,

02:29and you're going to find that Microsoft Edge is kind of a...

02:32Well, it's kind of like a blue E, like the old Internet Explorer,

02:35but it's kind of stylized.

02:36So, anyway, take a look for it.

02:38I'm sure you'll find it.

02:39Crack it open, and you're going to be taken to your browser window.

02:43Now, Corey, the tools that we're going to be looking at today

02:45are to the right of the address bar.

02:47Now, where is the address bar, Corey?

02:49I've got a quick Internet browser quiz for you.

02:53Well, I would guess it's in one of the top corners.

03:29And we're going to go ahead and open up a story here.

03:34and everything you need to know about the reunion tour?

03:38Oh, there's no way those two brothers,

03:40that you're telling me the Gallagher brothers,

04:17I wouldn't say it's a strange voice.

04:19It just sounds like a voice that I'm unfamiliar with.

04:22Unfamiliar with, yeah.

04:23English, but with an accent.

04:25Do you know why, Corey?

04:27I'm guessing the TTS engine is based off

04:30of English with an accent.

04:32Well, this particular TTS voices,

04:34and the point is here, there are hundreds of voices

04:37to choose from.

04:38And this particular one is English

04:40with a Singapore accent, Corey.

04:42But if I go to the right at the top,

04:44there is a voice options button,

04:46and I can change the sliders to adjust the voice speed.

04:48And there is a drop-down box or a combo box here

04:51where I can select all sorts of voices,

04:53including a ton of English voices with different accents.

04:57For example, do we want an Irish lady to read to us?

05:00Yeah, of course we do.

05:01So that's what we're going to try here.

05:05And very nice, a Siamese lady.

05:53Anyway, loads of voices to choose from.

05:55Very natural sounding.

05:57Now they will read from the top of the page,

05:59but we can click in any place, Corey,

06:01and it will redirect the reading from that place.

06:03So let me just do that quickly.

06:12And as it's reading, Corey,

06:13there is a control panel across the top

06:15that allows me to pause and play,

06:16skip backward, skip forward.

06:18No, actually, I think the voices are really, really good.

06:20Amazing.

06:21I'd love to see.

06:22Now, here's a question, and I'll be honest,

06:25I don't have the answer because I haven't yet done it.

06:28But in Windows 11,

06:29there are now the expanded narrator core voices

06:32or whatever they are.

06:33Are these pulling from that, do you think?

06:35I don't know.

06:36These are all online-only voices.

06:38Okay.

06:39So I can't imagine that narrator would use online-only voices

06:42because what if you wanted to use narrator?

06:44Yeah, that would make sense.

06:46So that is a good point then

06:47because some people would say,

06:48well, Windows Magnification already has some reading options.

06:54What's the difference?

06:55And I suppose the big difference is

06:57just the wide variety of voices,

06:59not only quality,

07:01but also being able to get different accents too.

07:06Yes, and many, many different languages also.

07:09And it's very easy to use.

07:10Let's just do this, Corey.

07:11We're going to crank up the voice speed, okay?

07:13And we'll just see what it sounds like at its fastest.

07:15We are going to choose South Africa layer

07:19for this particular test.

07:20We're going to crank from normal.

07:22We're going to crank the slider all the way to fast, Corey.

07:26Okay, you ready?

07:27I'm ready.

07:28Now, I'm going to let you listen to this,

07:30and I'm going to ask you a question after listening.

07:32I'm going to ask you how many dates

07:34they will be playing at Manchester's Heaton Park.

07:44Okay, well, I guess you passed that test.

07:55It's still very understandable.

07:57It's nowhere near as fast as you would have your eloquence.

07:59No, I mean, if you are a straight text-to-speech user,

08:02if you're a screen reader user,

08:04most likely you wouldn't be tapping into these edge features anyways.

08:07Although, if you really like the voices, you might.

08:10But you'd be typically using your own screen reader

08:15and controlling the speed that way.

08:17But I think it's plenty fast for what most individuals would do,

08:21and I still like that it is quite intelligible.

08:23Yes, very, very intelligible.

08:25Yes, so all in all, very nice voices,

08:28very easy to use.

08:30Why not try it out?

08:31I should mention as well, Corey,

08:32as well as being able to click on the A to the right of the adjust bar,

08:35you can also do a Control-Shift-U to start and stop the speed.

08:39And that'll start from wherever your cursor's at?

08:41No, it will start from the top of the page

08:44if it's the first time you've done it.

08:46And then I think it will continue from where you've got to.

08:49But actually, thinking about it, if you do a Control-Shift-U...

08:52Stadium.

08:53They'll also be playing tonight at Edinburgh's Mayfield.

08:55Yes, Control-Shift-U will pause and stay where you are

08:57so then you can resume from where you left off.

09:02Let's move on to the Immersive Reader.

09:14The next feature is the Immersive Reader.

09:18Ooh, spooky.

09:20Very much not a spooky feature, though.

09:22It's actually a very helpful feature, Corey,

09:24that we can initiate in two ways.

09:25Number one, press F9.

09:27Okay.

09:28Number two, click to the right of the address bar

09:31to the right of the button that we were just talking about.

09:34So this icon is a book with a speaker by it.

09:37Corey, where's the address bar located visually?

09:39That is right dead center between the two top corners.

09:43Exactly, between those two top corners at the top of the screen.

09:46So we're still in the same story about Oasis,

09:49and we're finding it a little hard to read, Corey.

09:51Yes.

09:52It's a little too cluttered.

09:54A little too cluttered.

09:55There's too much on the page, too many ads.

09:57There's just too much going on.

09:58I have to say, actually, this being the BBC,

10:00there's zero ads on this page.

10:01But let's just pretend that there are many ads on this page.

10:03A bit too much visual clutter.

10:05Not a problem.

10:06We are going to enter the Immersive Reader.

10:09Ooh.

10:10So what's happened here, Corey,

10:11is it has stripped out the text, the important text,

10:15and put it into, essentially, you can think of it as its own window.

10:19Now, you had mentioned a different browser that does this, Corey?

10:23Yes.

10:24I believe Safari.

10:27I don't want to say they were first to do it,

10:29because I don't even know if that's true.

10:30But both on the iPhone and Mac,

10:32they have their reader view or reader mode,

10:34where it basically does the same thing, strips everything out,

10:37and really was, I don't want to say game-changing.

10:40That might be a little over the top.

10:42But especially not only from a screen reader standpoint,

10:45I mean, that was pretty nice, too,

10:47but from a low vision standpoint, obviously,

10:49getting rid of all that visual clutter is such a huge thing.

10:51Yes.

10:52And so this view is going to be similar to that type of idea,

10:55if you've used that before.

10:56We have a number of things that we can do in this view, Corey.

10:59Okay.

11:00So when we go into this view,

11:01there are some options at the top right which will appear.

11:03And the first of those is Read Aloud.

11:05Guess what happens when we click that, Corey?

11:07Well, I'm wondering,

11:08does it use the same feature we just showed moments ago,

11:10or is it a whole different?

11:12Okay, so let's think back, Corey,

11:14to a few minutes ago when we were looking at the Read Aloud feature.

11:19Yes.

11:20What voice did we leave it on?

11:21Do you remember?

11:22Yes, we left it on…

11:24What did we leave?

11:25Was it Brian?

11:26No, it was a lady South African voice.

11:28Oh, that's right.

11:29Because when you did 100…

11:38If I hit Read Aloud, do we have the same settings now?

11:45Okay, so it has remembered our settings from the previous Read Aloud.

11:48And when I hit Play here, the same options come up.

11:52So at the top right, I have the voice options again,

11:54and I can slow down the speed, and I can change the voice again.

11:58I think what we really need here is a nice UK voice.

12:02So let's see.

12:03We'll try Emma, and we'll see what she sounds like.

12:13Now those who are able to see the screen will notice something interesting here, Corey.

12:16As it reads, it is highlighting the words.

12:19And so we do get this visual and this auditory collaboration,

12:25which is just going to blow our minds, Corey,

12:27because in terms of our ability to absorb and ingest and understand the text,

12:33a lot of people need the visual cue as well as the auditory cue.

12:37And so this gives you both, and it helps keep you focused.

12:39And I will point out that the Immersive Reader is not just for people with low vision.

12:43It is for people with print disabilities in general.

12:45What happens if I'm not happy with the visual look of it?

12:51Maybe I don't like the highlighting or the spacing's too tight.

12:56Well, I'm afraid that's just tough.

12:57Oh, bummer.

12:58I really wish Bill would have thought of that.

13:03I would like you to update and improve your Immersive Reader.

13:21Okay, so we can change our text size.

13:24Now, no matter how large you make it, Corey, it will wrap to the width of the screen.

13:29So you're not going to have to pan around the screen looking at things.

13:32You can make it very nice and large on the top end.

13:34Or if you want it smaller, you can make it nice and small too.

13:37We can also change the text spacing.

13:40And I think this will be more for other print disabilities rather than low vision.

13:43But we can change the spacing in between the letters and the words, making them larger spacing.

13:49We can also change the font.

13:50We have Calibri.

13:51We have Sitka.

13:53And everybody's favorite, Comic Sans.

13:55I can't believe that's actually an app.

13:57Yeah, I don't know why it was those three in particular that they decided to go with.

14:00No Arial, no Tahoe.

14:01They just went right to Comic Sans.

14:03Why not?

14:04Everybody loves comics.

14:05We also have a text column style.

14:07We can change the width of the margins, essentially.

14:11Oh, sure.

14:12Making the column wider or smaller.

14:14And we can also change the background.

14:16We have various kind of white, black on white, white on black.

14:19We have one which is like a tinted, almost like a page.

14:23You know, like as pages get older in a book, they kind of get this yellowy kind of look.

14:27You can have one of those type of looks.

14:28So very nice.

14:29And there are more themes which you can go ahead and try out as well.

14:32There's a whole plethora of colors to choose from.

14:36And I would assume, Luke, that whatever changes you make, most likely will carry over between browser sessions.

14:44Well, that's a good question, and I believe the answer is yes.

14:47In fact, I'm 99% sure, but I'm not going to say 100%.

15:23In the reading preferences, we have line focus.

15:25We can choose, rather than just having words highlighted, we can actually have lines.

15:40How do you want to do it?

15:42Corby, have you ever heard of windowing on CCTV?

15:49But not only that, this is where it really gets wild.

15:51We are able to translate the entire page into a completely different language.

15:57And if we have it read to us, it will choose the appropriate TTS voice.

19:03The point is, we have browser magnification.

19:05And, Corey, if the website has been coded in HTML5, it should be responsive to the width of the screen now.

19:13So, you should be able to enlarge the browser window, and the text won't go off the edges.

19:20Sure.

19:21It should wrap to the width.

19:22And how do you make it smaller?

19:23Well, Corey, I'm glad you asked.

19:24That would be a control minus.

19:26And what happens if I just wanted to get rid of it altogether?

19:28Just close the browser altogether?

20:02You know, I am a Google Chrome user.

20:07So, I wasn't paying attention at all during this video.

20:09No, I'm just kidding.

20:11No, I've just used Chrome for a long time.

20:13But, Edge is obviously working just as well as Chrome in many cases.

20:17Although, I'd love people to put it down in the comments if they have a browser of choice

20:21and why they choose it.

20:23Hold on.

20:24Hold on.

20:25You're a screen reader user.

20:26And so, part of your thing is the browser that's most compatible with your screen reader.

20:34Yeah, but I don't even know that that's true anymore.

20:36I mean, it was when Edge first came out.

20:38And so, then I just sort of got in the habit.

20:39I see.

20:40But, I mean, I've done tons of training on Edge.

20:42You do a big amount of screen reader training on Edge.

20:45I mean, have you ever run into an issue?

20:47No, I don't believe so.

20:49Okay.

20:50But, I mean, I love what Edge is doing.

20:53How Microsoft is putting some more accessibility.

20:56They're not just relying on you sort of providing your own accessibility features

21:01either through magnification or whatever.

21:03But, instead, building it right into their browser in case maybe that's all you need.

21:08Maybe you don't do much else on the computer and you just need some accessibility within the browser.

21:13I think that's true for a lot of people.

21:15I've got to be honest.

21:16Like how many people use their computer exclusively to do things on the internet?

21:20I would say like most people.

21:22Well, I think it depends on what group you're talking about.

21:25Well, I'm talking about just your average, not work, just your average enjoyer of electronic technology.

21:32Yeah, outside of work tasks, you're probably right.

21:3599% of what people do now are web browser based.

21:39Yes, so if you are low vision and you're just doing stuff in your browser,

21:44you've got magnification built in,

21:46you've got a whole immersive reader view built in with different backgrounds,

21:53with different options for magnification.

21:55You've got text-to-speech with fantastic voices.

21:58You've got translation.

21:59I feel like you've got probably everything that you need just built right in there.

22:04Yeah, I would agree.

22:05I mean, in most cases.

22:06I will say though, Corey, you can get extensions for Google Chrome as well.

22:10So you could probably replicate what we're doing here.

22:13But it's just built into Edge right off the get-go.

22:16So why bother with Google Chrome and getting extensions when you've got Edge right there and it does what you need?

22:20And again, it's completely free.

22:22So why not go and try it?

22:24Most likely, if you've got a Windows computer, not even most likely,

22:27if you've got a Windows computer, you've got Edge on there.

22:30So why not follow the video?

22:32Try out some of the features we highlighted.
