00:00Let's jump right in and introduce our course project.

00:04So here's the situation.

00:06You've just been hired by Maven Charter Schools, an up-and-coming private education institution.

00:12They have a wealth of public and private data about schools,

00:16but need help cleaning and transforming it in order to expose meaningful patterns and insights from the data.

00:24Maven Charter Schools would like you to examine, clean, shape, combine,

00:29and share competitive education data from the Massachusetts education market.

00:34All you've been given is a folder of Excel and CSV files

00:38containing information about teacher pay and performance,

00:41student SAT scores, pupil expenditures, and graduation rates by school and district.

00:48Your objective is to use Tableau Prep to connect to multiple data sources,

00:53examine and filter your data, clean and shape fields, combine and aggregate data,

00:59and share and update your curated data sources with your end users.

01:04Now that we've introduced the course project,

01:07let's give you a sneak peek of what you'll be creating in Tableau Prep throughout this course.

01:12Alright, so right now we're inside Tableau Prep,

01:15and what you're looking at is the final Tableau Prep data flow that you'll be creating in this course.

01:21Let's take a look at some of the different tools and functionality

01:24that you'll be using throughout the course to manipulate, clean, and export your data.

01:29To start, you'll be dynamically ingesting raw data using data inputs and wildcard unions.

01:36Once data is ingested, we'll move on to cleaning, filtering,

01:40and creating calculated fields to support your data.

01:43You'll be able to track your changes along the way,

01:46and go back to any of the steps that you've created

01:48to be able to validate and improve any of the changes that you've made to the data.

01:53You'll also be able to profile the data dynamically

01:56and make changes on the fly straight from our visual view.

01:59Once the data is cleaned and calculated, we'll be unioning and joining the data together.

02:04We'll walk through the different benefits and drawbacks of each type of union and join

02:09so that you know exactly which type you'll need for your data.

02:12We'll also be grouping and aggregating data together

02:15and creating unique lists and varying aggregated data sets as outputs to our flow.

02:21Finally, we'll be pivoting and transforming our rows and columns

02:25and outputting our data to varying data sources.

02:28Our goal is to show you how to transform your data to support varying audiences,

02:33consumption methods, and performance needs inside your organization using Tableau Prep.
