00:00Take a look at the tail of the
01:30She's always wanted to come back and fight in front of her home fans and for a title
01:33as well.
01:36Speaking to Viviana Ruiz yesterday after the weigh-in and she credits her journey in boxing.
01:46It was back in Colombia.
01:49She did a lot of sparring and mentoring work with Angry Ange, a Facebook sensation over
01:57there.
01:58Huge on social media and Viviana followed the advice from Angela, no relation, but followed
02:08the advice of Angry Ange and moved into the boxing and has done a terrific job ever since.
02:17From Facebook to the ring and smiles.
02:20These two were a bundle of energy yesterday at the weigh-in.
02:24Really easy to promote Brenton as media types.
02:28It's something you and I are continually battling with in terms of how can we be different?
02:33How can we attract a wider audience?
02:37These two, delightful to deal with and they're terrific stories beyond the boxing or sporting
02:43public.
02:44Yeah, it's a sensational story as well.
02:46Again, you call it perfect as far as the weigh-in, the press conference, such great personalities
02:51as well.
02:52Interesting dynamic in the corner, you've got Angelo Hyder in the corner for Louisa
02:56Horton, but in the corner for Viviana Ruiz, you've got Andrew and Jason Maloney, so obviously
03:02interesting dynamic there with obviously Angelo Hyder, the head trainer for the Maloney brothers
03:07for a number of years.
03:11Staring across the ring at one another, 10 rounds, 2 minutes each round with the 60 seconds
03:19in between.
03:20Louisa Horton in the purple, it just appears she's a smile tattooed on her face the whole
03:27time and she has dropped Ruiz in just the second round.
03:31And she's known as Bang Bang for a reason, I said in the opener, these girls can both
03:36bang for their weight and straight away, Louisa Horton has put her on her backside.
03:45She's smiling as they go about their work.
03:51Another good right hand there from Horton over the top and she's smiling in there, she's
03:56really enjoying herself.
03:59Coming up two weight classes as well, gentlemen, how good is that for that power?
04:04Yeah, certainly.
04:05Yeah.
04:06GC suffered significantly with no fights during COVID, really, for Louisa Horton, zero fights
04:13in four years and sure, there were other people around the world that suffered much
04:17larger loss, but like a lot of athletes, came at the wrong time and just stopped her career
04:25stone cold.
04:26I think it's a challenge for all girls in Australia, to be honest, I mean, obviously,
04:30Viviana Ruiz, this is her first for 2024 as well, so it's just hard to stay active, especially
04:35as a female fighter in Australia, because the pool is not there, unfortunately, let's
04:40hope it changes in future, but at the moment, it's just not there.
04:44See, Viviana trying to get back into this round, she's starting to the body, finishing
04:48to the head, she's willing.
04:53Nice head movement by Horton.
04:58Yeah, very much so.
05:04And when somebody moves so much, you tend to, you should be jabbing to the chest because
05:09that never moves, Andy, and one thing right now is, she's trying to get the jab off Ruiz,
05:15but she's just missing all the time, so if she jabs to that chest that doesn't move like
05:19the head, all of a sudden, she'll find her mark, and then after she finds her mark, she
05:23can come through with her big right hand.
05:26See some replays of that second round, and it was a big one for Louisa Horton, because
05:32she caused that knockdown, ten eight rounds straight in the book, still plenty of time
05:38in this contest, so Ruiz can definitely find her way back into this contest, but a really
05:43big exclamation mark, that round from Bang Bang Lulu.
05:50Interesting in that, on the replays there, Nathan, it was actually some good punches
05:53that were landed by Ruiz, but again, it was Horton that landed the knockdown, which obviously
05:58dominated the round.
06:01A couple of Wonder Women in the corner as well, Louisa Horton is a previous winner of
06:06a Wonder Woman award at a women's luncheon, and Shireen Dindar is obviously helping her
06:11in the corner as well, as a recipient of the same award this year.
06:16Here we go, round number three for the WBA Oceania Flyweight title, a regional belt,
06:23as sanctioned by the World Boxing Authority.
06:29Tap tap Lulu, tap tap Lulu, there are the instructions we're hearing from the blue corner,
06:35and Angelo Hyde of the principal there.
06:39And Ruiz's corner hasn't caught up yet, but she keeps on continually circling to the left
06:44hand side, so if Ruiz just throws over that right hand, more likely than not she's going
06:49to catch her, but she just keeps on circling left.
06:55Only tiny, the pair of these women, they're generating some power, you can hear the shots,
07:04especially those body shots that go around HPF Stadium, Horton's still smiling, she does
07:13that in all her fights, doesn't she?
07:15It's amazing, yeah.
07:16Dancing out to the ring, just to start Andy, I mean obviously, that was, you can show the,
07:21see the showmanship in Louisa Horton, she's here to entertain, and that's exactly what
07:26she's doing, already causing that first knockdown, and putting on a show here for the audience.
07:33Before, Nathan, again, if she circled around the right way, that Viviana Ruiz could land
07:37the right hand, but Horton's just so hard to hit, isn't she?
07:40Yeah.
07:41Well, she's not engaging, as soon as she finishes her punches, she's getting out of harm's way,
07:46she's stepping out far enough that Ruiz can't hit her, but you know, that's obviously the
07:51role of her, is to break that distance, is creep up with that front foot, and then all
07:55of a sudden start cutting off the ring.
07:58You can't just keep on chasing your opponent around the ring, because you'll be, you'll
08:01be hit in the air all night, you've just got to cut off the ring and force them to
08:04the corners.
08:05Closing stages of round three, it's been another exciting one.
08:09Yeah, it has been, and varied as well, varied in terms of momentum shifts, varied in terms
08:20of the punches, both girls coming into the contest with a lot of angles, a lot of different
08:25punches in their kit.
08:29To see some replays of that third round, it was a really good one for Horton, once again,
08:36getting off to better shots in that round, once again just having her way, just keep
08:42on circling the same way, but she's getting away with it, and why not?
08:45If it ain't broke, don't fix it, and at the moment she's having success.
08:51See at the end of that round, that Louisa Horton went to referee Gary Ingraham and said
08:56there was a headbutt in there, and Gary Ingraham acknowledged that he saw it, so it's like
09:03that, you've got the best in the business in the corner with Angela Ida, with the swelling.
09:14Gary Ingram calling the two ladies into action, with Blue Corner just a little late in getting
09:22out of there after the second score.
09:24This is round number four, feels like they're going three minutes a round, they're only
09:30going the two, nice two punch combination from Horton, the right hand is working, we
09:37saw that certainly in round number two, she's smooth isn't she?
09:43And what she's doing Andy, she's controlling the distance, she's only fighting when she
09:47has to, because she's out of harm's way, and all of a sudden when she wants to engage she
09:51gets in and then she gets back out, and Ruiz is not adjusting yet, she's not cutting off
09:55the ring and she's not closing that distance to be able to get her own shots off.
10:00What's incredible about the performance so far of Horton is that, again yes she did have
10:04a fight this year, but it only went one round, and she hasn't been in the rings before that
10:07since 2019, it's quite incredible.
10:12She would have loved the victory earlier this year, no doubt Brad Patrice, she probably
10:16would have loved a couple of extra rounds, and it probably would have been more beneficial
10:20for her, but as I said earlier a lot of people within the sport really struggle with COVID,
10:27interrupting their career, getting rounds back, it's almost like starting again, all
10:32over again for so many of these boxers, you wouldn't know it looking at Louisa Horton
10:37at the moment though, the first four rounds have been terrific, she wears a nice left
10:41hand at the end of that.
10:42Well finally Ruiz got close enough to throw the punch, that's why, as soon as she was
10:46close enough she landed.
10:50Ruiz playing the counter boxing role almost at the moment, but it's certainly Horton that's
10:58the initiator, seeing the punches well, slipping both sides there, and a two punch combination
11:08there, an uppercut and a right hook, both paying dividends for Horton as she really
11:13turns on the heat here in the final stages of this round.
11:16She's having fun in there, isn't she?
11:20Good round for Louisa Horton, bang bang Lulu, going bang bang.
11:29A stunning end to the fourth round for the girl in purple, Louisa bang bang Lulu Horton,
11:37and when she turns it on, she turns it on hot, and you can see some replays of that
11:43round, controlling the distance once again throughout that whole round.
11:47Out of harm's way, you can see punching at air was Ruiz, not close enough to her opponent,
11:52a couple of times when she gets in the distance, finally she gets her shots off,
11:57but for the majority of the round, end for the fight, it's been four at Louisa Horton's distance.
12:04You mentioned before about activity, Andy, look, Riveriana Ruiz has been more active
12:09in the ring over the last few years than Louisa Horton, and Horton has actually just said,
12:13this is a mixture of unfinished business and a comeback, don't call it a comeback, she said.
12:19Don't be mistaken, but she is the more experienced of the two, obviously,
12:23two-time world champion, she's won the WBO light flyweight title, she's won the WBC
12:29atom weight title, so yeah, she's the far more experienced out of the two.
12:35The two-minute round's feeling like three minutes for us, but probably still four minutes for the
12:41girls, really high energy, and they have been literally standing where they are now since the
12:52start. And just that distance control once again from Louisa Horton, you can see she's just playing
12:57at the moment, punching when she wants to, and engaging when she wants to. Good right hand over
13:05the top once again, and then back on the jab, doing everything perfect is Louisa Horton, and
13:11really enjoying herself, you can see mouth wide open, smiling throughout the whole round.
13:17Confidence is high, hands are a little low for mine at times, but she's obviously feeling
13:23comfortable. I'm with you, but Andy, for me, you always practice perfect, because you're only
13:31one fight away from a potential world title, and you probably can't get away with what you're
13:36getting away with tonight, so all of a sudden, if you're practicing the wrong thing, that becomes
13:41natural, and you might get caught up in the bigger fights. Well, you're one fight away from potential
13:46world title, but you're also one punch away from being denied. Correct. If the hands are down,
13:53yeah, it's the start of bad habits. Louise just looking a little uncomfortable, a little flustered
13:59at the moment, largely because Bang Bang Lulu is just full on, she doesn't stop, doesn't stop
14:08moving, doesn't stop throwing hands. And mixing up well between the body and the head, she's
14:13adjusting the height, you can see, ripping down to the body, then finishing to the head,
14:17and then getting out, out of harm's way. Another perfect round for Horton.
14:23Louise did enter that round strongly, but I agree with you, I thought that Louisa Horton
14:29had another good round there. You see some replays of that fifth round.
14:36It was rinse and repeat, the distance control from the girl in the blue corner.
14:43Has been second to none. Ruiz, very games, you can see, getting a shot off here and there,
14:49every now and again, but just not enough. The movement just too much for her.
14:56Andrew and Jason Maloney in the corner for Viviana Ruiz. She's caught the smiles as well,
15:04look at that. These girls all about fun in there, aren't they? We've got a different definition of
15:12fun. We're having it right here, gentlemen. Round number six, six of ten, so the second half of this
15:18fight just beginning now. Viviana Ruiz is the champion in the white and the blue. Louisa Horton
15:27in the purple is the challenger. And for mine, well on top, in control at the moment is
15:36Viviana Ruiz. Louisa Horton. Nathan, you mentioned it as well, so much on the line in this fight.
15:44You heard it in the introduction that Ruiz is the WBA number two ranked fighter in the world.
15:48It was only a couple of days ago she's been elevated to number one position, so so much in
15:51the line of this fight. Oh certainly, and obviously being a two-time former world champion as well,
15:56all of a sudden she'll climb those rankings so high. She'll take her position straight away
16:01and don't be surprised if her next fight is for a world title.
16:04And she wants it here in Perth. That's always, she's always wanted that. Well why not? An
16:10unbelievable atmosphere here, an unbelievable stadium. It's jam-packed here and the atmosphere
16:15is electric. It is a terrific place to attend and watch or watch on TV the fights.
16:26Circling around to her left. Good right hand from Ruiz. Certainly not gone yet.
16:41Keeps attacking with that right hand, keeps missing though.
16:47It's not quite a hook, it's not quite a straight punch, it's that old bolo punch.
16:56Good body shot there from Horton. And there's a right hand there from Urez. That was a good punch.
17:09Some more positive signs for Ruiz over this round. A good straight right hand there.
17:16The output's starting to increase, Andy. Yep. And they're starting to engage a little bit more. I
17:21think Horton's becoming a little bit more comfortable. And with that comfort,
17:25she's getting closer to her opponent. And all of a sudden, Ruiz can start hitting her.
17:38Round number seven coming our way. You see some replays of that previous round. And that round was
17:45number six. A boxing clinic overall by Louisa Horton. It was a better round for Ruiz, obviously
17:54getting closer to her opponent, scoring sometimes. She just needs a little bit more of that in these
18:01closing rounds. You're right, Nathan. Again, there's a couple of good moments for Ruiz,
18:08especially in the later parts of the last couple of rounds. But again, the output and the accuracy
18:14of Horton is there to put on show. Here we go, round number seven. Big shout out to
18:24West Australian State Government through Tourism Western Australia. You can find
18:30Western Australia on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter at Western Australia. You can find the
18:35hashtag WATheDreamState. And check out what is on offer, because there is many and they are
18:43terrific. So many experiences can be had here in the beautiful West.
18:50The experience at the moment for Bang Bang Lulu Horton, nothing but smiles.
18:57And I don't want to keep on harping on, but 90% of the time, she's continually tracking to her left,
19:04and it still hasn't been caught on by Ruiz. You can see, just opens up that right hand
19:10straight away. If she's close enough, she's good enough. But all of a sudden,
19:17they haven't caught on to it. So Lulu just keeps on doing what she's doing. She's getting away with it.
19:24Message might come as a reminder at the end of the round,
19:28as again, you need to step it up sort of message, isn't it, Nathan? Yeah, well, you need to step it
19:33up and you need to start cutting off the ring. Right now, she cannot win the fight. She's losing
19:40every round. Well, for mine, she needs a stoppage to win this fight. Even if she
19:46dominates the last three rounds, she's behind on the judges' scorecard.
19:54Anything that worries me when saying stuff like that was two losses on the Ruiz Horton record.
19:58One of those was a robbery. She's only got really one loss on her record.
20:04So you never know what judges say, hey gentlemen. Yeah, 100%. It was a good right hand there from her as well
20:12to finish off the closing stages of the seventh round. Impressive performance from the girl in
20:19the blue corner. And what an experienced corner she has with Angelo Haida getting all the best
20:24instructions throughout the one-minute break. See some replays of that seventh round. Look how
20:32comfortable she is just smiling throughout the whole duration of this fight. Controlling the
20:38distance, controlling the pace and the shot selection is unbelievable. Mixing it up to the
20:47body, to the head and just scoring at will. I just love her movement, the way that she's getting out
20:53of that danger that you spotted Nathan. And she just hasn't been there to take that shot.
21:02Adam Wills, Angelo Haida, Shireen Dindar in the corner for Luisa Bang Bang Lulu Horton.
21:11Ruiz and Horton, we continue into round number eight.
21:17Enjoyable matchup thus far, high energy
21:26and a really good performance from Horton.
21:32You can see something can't you Nathan? Oh yeah, we're going in circles. Yeah, left circles.
21:41It still hasn't been picked up and it's a
21:44potentially inexperienced thing or I don't know. But yeah,
21:48should have been picked up by now. Just continually circling to that left-hand side.
21:55Yeah, the comments from Angelo Haida, let her make the mistake.
22:03Hear those comments Andy. Yeah, he's never backward and coming forward.
22:08Angelo Haida must be something in the name. Perfect description of the great man. Yeah,
22:13he doesn't mince his words, that's for sure.
22:17Still remember the night that I was commentating and he started
22:21slapping the bear, Big Bobby Mirovic in the corner with one round to go in the
22:26Australian heavyweight title fight. Greatest entertainment I've seen.
22:32That's a good punch by Ruiz, even though Angelo said it was a good punch by Horton,
22:36it's probably a good punch from Ruiz. I agree, that was her punch that one. So I don't know
22:42what he was trying to say there. He's trying to play sneaky buggers with the judges I think.
22:48I don't think he has to at this stage with 30 seconds remaining in round number eight. Next up
22:54Steve Gago and Blake Minto, then our main event Alex Winwood and Thammanoon Myatrong.
23:02What an opportunity that is for young Alex Winwood.
23:09Generational talent.
23:12Last couple of seconds and still heading in circles here
23:16of the round, round number eight. We've got four minutes remaining.
23:31See some replays of that eighth round.
23:37Once again rinse and repeat. More of the same, a good right hand then from Ruiz.
23:42Ruiz scoring over the top of the jab of Horton, but for the majority of the round,
23:51it was just more of the same. Thinking about more of the same, Andy mentioned about four
23:57minutes left in the fight. What are your thoughts about women in two-minute rounds? Because you've
24:02seen mixed reactions out there. Three-minute rounds or two-minute rounds? I think if they
24:07had the opportunity, they would want to fight three-minute rounds and that's the honest truth.
24:11Obviously, they're forced on to fight the two-minute duration, but you can already see on
24:15an international level, lots of girls up in arms saying, why not? We want to fight the three-minute
24:20rounds as well. Two sides to this debate. Two very passionate sides to this debate.
24:28I've got a suggestion. I think we should be trialing a two-minute 30 round and see what
24:34it looks like. If it looks okay after 18 months or two years, let's go to three. There's no rush in
24:42anything we should be doing for the women. I haven't heard that before, but I like it.
24:47It's something a bit different. I like it. I think the most exciting thing for a fight fan
24:53is that last minute usually because that's when fatigue sets in. We're missing that sometimes with
24:58the girls because they're so fresh and they're continually moving like Lulu was doing here
25:03tonight. With that extra minute, all of a sudden fatigue sets in. When fatigue sets in,
25:08your feet slow down and you get close to the opponent and they start trading.
25:13It's great to see the blueprint in the house tonight. Erin McGowan put women's boxing on the
25:17map in Australia. She's looking beautiful and opened up a new gym. It's great to see her at
25:21HBS Stadium. I was actually fortunate enough to go on a few trips when we're representing
25:26Australia together, Erin McGowan. That's how far back we go. She was an unbelievable talent,
25:31a real trailblazer for women's boxing, that's for sure. Wasn't she in Louisa Horton looking to
25:38achieve similar status here? Great punch status before by Louise. That's probably the best punch
25:44of the fight, Nathan. Yeah, certainly. Once again, just a big swing and a miss there, but
25:51when she's in the pocket, she's good. Don't get me wrong. She's really good,
25:55but just hasn't been close enough to her opponent enough to make it a fight tonight.
25:59Louise down in round two. Yeah, so an automatic, well, you would think a 10-8 round. Absolutely.
26:05For round number two. That's why we're saying she really needed that
26:13stoppage and that was evident after six rounds. Louise puts the hand up there and
26:20she's celebrating whether she's trying to confuse the judges as well. I'm not sure.
26:24Taking notes from Angelo Hyder. Yeah.
26:29You can see some replays and let's have a look at the footwork of Lulu.
26:34It hasn't been exploited tonight because she's been allowed to do whatever she wants to do
26:39and those feet have been razzle-dazzle and going left all night. If it ain't broke,
26:45don't fix it and she just keeps on getting away with these points.
26:48A really great boxing exhibition from Bang Bang Lulu. It has been. It really has been.
26:59Starting to look pretty marked up, I've got to say, in the other corner, in the red corner,
27:04Vivian Ruiz. Here we go. The tenth and final round and the reward for the winner, the WBA
27:16Oceana Flyweight title. That is for the winner. Then our semi-main event, Steve Gago and Blake
27:26Minto is next. Got two minutes left of this contest and for me, Bang Bang Lulu
27:38has dominated since the opening seconds and will continue to
27:43dominate.
27:46Message from the corner from Horton would be basically don't do anything silly. Just
27:50you've got this one in the bag. What do you think, Nathan? 100%. I mean, she's trying to find some
27:54right hands now is Vivian Ruiz and that's exactly what she needs to do. She needs to knock her out
28:00to get this victory for sure but let me tell you, there is tracks in this canvas tonight because she
28:08has just been circling and circling and circling all night. She can go for another 10 rounds.
28:17Smiling all the way through it as we see.
28:21A great exhibition.
28:25And opens up so much doors in her future now. She's back. Huge opportunities for Louisa Horton.
28:33Huge opportunities over the next 12 to 18 months. Good right hand from Ruiz over the top.
28:43Final 30 seconds.
28:47You think we'll see one final flurry here from Ruiz. Staking one final claim to try and salvage
28:53something here. It's a good right hand from Ruiz to close out this round. She definitely needed it.
28:58She's been out-thought, out-punched and out-maneuvered has the champion Viviana Ruiz.
29:09It has just been one of those nights. Bang Bang Lulu
29:14has been absolutely exceptional and well done to her.
29:22A bit of a warning at the end of the fight from Gary Ingraham but both girls celebrating but
29:28wow have I missed something because the Maloney boys, Ben Sava and Viviana Ruiz are all celebrating.
29:38I still think it was a it was a great fight but we're expecting it to go one way based on what
29:42we saw. A hundred percent. I mean yeah. She's just cleaner as you said Nathan. She was circling and
29:48Viviana couldn't land that punch that you said that it was open and and credit to Horton. She
29:54was able to get out of the way and she's having fun in there and she had fun all night.
30:00Boxing up a storm. Really really game from Viviana Ruiz. She tried. She tried her heart out but she
30:07maybe just the game plan and the and the execution wasn't 100% there tonight unfortunately.
30:14Viviana Ruiz celebrating in her corner.
30:19In her corner, Bang Bang Lulu's celebrating. Wow and I thought it was reasonably clear and
30:28actually very clear on on the side of Bang Bang Lulu.
30:39The numbers are in though. Let's go to James O'Shea.
30:49All right ladies and gentlemen we'll get our fighters to set a ring.
30:55This one here for the WBA Oceania flyweight title.
31:02Put your hands together for both fighters please ladies and gentlemen they deserve your applause.
31:08We go to the judges at school cards and judge Bill Seth scores the contest at 97 to 92.
31:20Judge Vince Percoliti scores the contest 95 to 94 and judge Rob Rosso scores the bout 95 to 94.
31:30All to your winner by unanimous decision and new WBA Oceania champion
31:41Louisa Lulu Bang Bang Houghton.
