00:00Today we are going to learn about Roman numerals.
00:04Roman numerals are a different way to write the numbers.
00:09We're gonna teach you how to do that in this video.
00:12It's gonna be awesome.
00:15Said, we're gonna be learning Roman numerals,
00:17which is a different way to write numbers.
00:20And it was used a long time ago in ancient Rome
00:23and it's been used since then.
00:26And you can think of it almost as a secret code way
00:29of writing the numbers.
00:30It's pretty simple to learn
00:32and we're gonna go through that.
00:36The first Roman numeral we're gonna learn
00:38is the Roman numeral I.
00:40And I is one.
00:44I equals one.
00:46So if you see an I with a Roman numeral, it's one.
00:50The letter V is the Roman numeral that means five.
00:54And the letter X is the Roman numeral
00:59that means 10.
01:01So when you think one, it's an I.
01:04You think five, it's a V.
01:06And if you think 10, it's an X.
01:12So that's it, just those three.
01:15I, it almost looks like a one.
01:17That's how you can remember that I is a one.
01:21I is the Roman numeral for one.
01:23A V is in the number five when you spell it out.
01:27Number five, you see that right there?
01:29It has a V in it.
01:30So when you think of V, you know, oh, you know what?
01:34There's a V in the spelled out number five.
01:39So V has to be five.
01:41Now, 10 is X and we can't think of anything
01:45that could remind us of that.
01:47So there is no memorization thing.
01:49Just when you see the X, it's 10
01:51and that's just what we're gonna have to do.
01:54Okay, one last time here.
01:57I just wanna make sure you get it.
01:58There's only three.
02:00I is the Roman numeral for one.
02:03V is the Roman numeral for five.
02:06And X is the Roman numeral for 10.
02:09And you gotta understand that so that we can start playing
02:12kind of a game of putting them together
02:15and making numbers other than just one, five, and 10.
02:20So let's get started.
02:22So let's practice putting these Roman numerals together.

02:32You see two I's and I is one.
02:36So the answer is two.
02:39Two I's is the number two.
02:47What about this one?
02:49What number do you think this is?
02:54There are three I's.
02:58Yeah, it's the number three.
03:02Let's try this one.
03:05What number do you think this is?
03:09We see two X's and X equals 10.
03:14So 10 plus 10 equals 20, great job.
03:21This is the number 20.
03:27Whoa, this one is so cool, okay.
03:31An X and a V, what number do you think this is?
03:38The X is a 10, the V is what number?
03:44Five, awesome.
03:47So what is 10 plus five?

03:57These together, I wanna tell you about two special numerals
04:01that are a little bit different
04:02and so you're gonna have to just remember these
04:04on their own.
04:06The first is the number four
04:08and the number four is represented with an I and a V
04:12and the I is before the V
04:14because four is one less than five, which is V.
04:19So remember, with four, it's IV.
04:23With nine, it's similar, except with the X.
04:27Nine is IX, X is 10 and I is just before it, so nine is IX.

04:44just using the numerals
04:46and I wanna see how much you've really learned.
