Apple brings 'huge upgrade' to Watch, while pushing new intelligence

Apple on Monday, September 9, unveiled its artificial intelligence-boosted iPhone 16, showing off the long-awaited device hours after Chinese rival Huawei's tri-fold phone began racking up orders.

Apple and technology companies around the world are racing to add AI to products, and phones are expected to be one of the most important battlegrounds. The Cupertino, California-based company also is betting the AI feature will drive consumers to upgrade amid a slowdown in iPhone sales.

Apple Intelligence, the company's AI software, will be used to improve its personal assistant, Siri, as well as enhancing features such as understanding and identifying objects captured by the phone camera.

A test version of Apple Intelligence will be available in the U.S. version of English next month. It will be available for other localized versions of English in December, with versions in languages including Chinese, French, Japanese and Spanish next year.

00:00It's the first time we've brought in those constellations, so we're going to have a look at them.
00:30There were a couple of things. There's always the fact that Apple is not a one-trick pony,
00:34and so today you saw three different family of products that all are going to speak to consumers in different ways.
00:41From the watch, I think the Series 10 is going to be a huge upgrade for a lot of consumers,
00:47to the AirPods and Apple doubling down on health and wellness across the board with sleep apnea and hearing protection and hearing loss detection.
01:00So we're going to have a look at that.
01:31And then on the iPhone, I thought it was really interesting how many new features and the fact that we have an 818,
01:38so the latest chipset, to the iPhone 16, which is the base model.
01:42Normally, we've had one minus from a chipset perspective, a bit more kind of limited feature set,
01:50and now they've brought a lot to it.
01:52It seems to me that they are prepping the base,
01:55so they're trying to get people that have iPhones that are two, three years old to really upgrade and be ready for Apple Intelligence.
02:26Based on crowd reaction, it was the 4K 120 video recording of the pros, right?
02:32That was the thing that got people most excited, and again, that is super cool if that's what I do.
02:39Day-to-day life, how often am I going to be really using that?
02:43But technically, it was very cool.
02:45The audio feature, I'm a musician, so being able to do a second track with voice memos is cool.
02:50That's a nice capability to have.
02:52But again, limited group of people.
03:22So here we are at an Apple keynote.
03:34It's a hardware-focused event, and yet it was Apple Intelligence that got most of the attention, right?
03:40They probably said it 50 times throughout the keynote.
03:43But what's interesting, of course, is that Apple is really good at telling the story around AI.
03:48Other companies have talked about some of the same sort of capabilities in terms of Google with Google Lens and the text creation and some of the image creation.
03:56There's lots of other companies that have it, but Apple did, I think, a pretty decent job of making it relevant to the average person.
04:03And that's really the trick when it comes to AI.
04:49Honestly, I'm not convinced that the capabilities that they introduced are going to drive that many people to upgrade.
04:55What I found really interesting, actually, is how much they focused on trade-ins.
04:59I don't remember them ever talking so much about trade-ins to encourage people to upgrade.
05:04And the other problem, of course, is all of the initial AI models are U.S. English only.
05:10So that cuts out a decent portion of the world.
05:13And some of this stuff won't come until next year for other regions around the world and other languages.
05:17So that's a bit of a hit when you think about Apple from a global perspective.
05:43I was really impressed with the audio capability on the AirPods.
06:00And I think that hearing loss is something that is a real thing.
06:06If you have a teenager like I do, you know that they live with these things in their ear all day long.
06:11So I think that that's an interesting feature.
06:13And then for people that already are experiencing hearing loss, using an hearing aid still has stigma attached to it.
06:20So being able to use what everybody else is using, which is a normal AirPod, to improve their quality of life, I think is huge.
