00:00But I want you to hear, just so you understand the background of what was going on with Jordan Mason after the game.
00:06This is right there on the sideline. Kid has the best night of his life.
00:10So obviously, he's going to talk to Lisa Salters with ESPN.
00:15When did you find out that you were going to be starting?
00:17Friday. Friday night. You know, something like that.
00:20You know, I was RB1 at training camp, so, you know, just been preparing from there.
00:23Okay, I think very key that he was like something like that.
00:27Friday. Friday night. I don't know, something like that.
00:31I don't know, maybe it was Saturday. I can't remember.
00:34That was a few days ago. That's what he said.
00:37And then, of course, with Christian not being announced as out until an hour before the game started,
00:43it was a very early question of Kyle Shanahan when he reached the podium after the game.
00:48I never told Jordan he was going to start.
00:50Told him he had to be ready a bunch, but that might have been Bobby or somebody trying to pump him up.
00:54But I knew he was going to have to play a lot.
00:55Told him that he was going to have to, wasn't going to be like usual.
00:58He was going to be a number two back that was splitting a lot of the time.
01:01But now he didn't know he for sure was doing that until the day.
01:03Okay, so like could that have all got lost in translation?
01:07I actually do think so.
01:09Yes, like your role is going to be different on Monday night.
01:13And then Lisa goes, when did you find out?
01:15He goes, Friday.
01:16Well, when did you find out what?
01:18Like that Christian wasn't playing?
01:21I'm sure he didn't find that out then.
01:23Right, I don't think that it, I believe that it wasn't decided yet at that time.
01:27I agree.
01:27And I also think that the idea of him saying, yeah, I found out I'm going to start on Friday.
01:33Fine, you can start and you can be out there for the first carry.
01:36And then you can never play again in a football game and McCaffrey could come in.
01:40But yeah, you started.
01:42So this whole thing is lexicon.
01:45And I'm sure he was told on Friday night, like Shanahan saying, we're going to need you.
01:49It's going to be split carries at the least.
01:51And so be ready.
01:53And so Bobby Turner, running backs coach, I'm sure was saying that a hundredfold.
01:57Like this is your chance.
01:58This is your time.
01:59So when Lisa asked him right after the game, I'm sure he wasn't thinking about the word starting.
02:05I'm sure that the question probably was, when did you find out you were going to play a lot?
02:09And JP Mason just checks notes, has never spoken to Lisa Salters.
02:14Like this is, he's never been in this position.
02:16Exactly.
02:17He doesn't know the game yet.
02:19The media game.
02:20He's never been in the spotlight like this.
02:22So this is, I promised you, I'd tell you how it went.
02:25JP says that to Lisa Salters.
02:27You get to the locker room.
02:30And now Kyle Shanahan says what he says.
02:33Our good friend Corey Rush takes him aside and says, hey, just so you know, here's, this is something kind of brewing here.
02:40Because you said one thing or they're going to take it that way.
02:43Kyle says another.
02:44We got to be careful as an organization.
02:46So then Mason gets his turn in front of the podium.
02:49No shame at Matty Mayoco, who's asking a fair question, although I understand why Jordan was annoyed by it.
02:55And here's that.
02:56When did you find out that you'd be in the starting lineup?
03:01That question right there is why I'm mad.
03:06That's why I don't like really talking to media because you say one thing wrong and then, you know, I don't know.
03:16Just skip that question.
03:17Yeah, just skip it.
03:18And he says, that's why I'm mad.
03:19And so what that and he said, you say one thing wrong.
03:23And I think what he said wrong was he found out that he was going to start Friday.
03:27And what he found out Friday was you're going to get to run the ball.
03:30You're going to be a big part of our game plan.
03:32We don't know about CMC, but we do know about you and you're getting a crack.
03:37So be ready on Monday night.
03:38That's what I believe he meant to say.
03:40I agree with you.
03:41And I also think in the end, this is a fat nothing burger.
03:44Agreed.
03:44Even if the Niners do get fine, y'all lose the sleep.
03:48Anybody not going to bed tonight if the Niners lose like a million dollars or something like that?
03:54Did you go to the game last night?
03:55Did it look like the Niners made some money last night?
03:57Wow.
03:58Are we OK?
03:59Are we OK?
04:00So the bummer for me, I wish for JP Mason nothing but champagne last night, man.
04:08Like that was a big night for this young man.
04:11That's a life-changing night.
04:13The world is talking about him today after Monday night football.
04:16It's a big deal.
04:18And I wish nothing but smiles after that whole thing.
04:21Unfortunately, that second cut you played, I wasn't hearing smiles in his voice.
04:25He was mad and he was a little bit shaken.
04:28And I think that he was a little taken aback at what you're talking about.
04:32You're coming off a 28 carry, one touchdown night on Monday night football in the opener,
04:38in a pinch at home for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.
04:42You're on cloud 36.
04:44And by the time you get to the podium, you're just Jordan Mason
04:47who has to answer questions that he doesn't want to answer.
04:49Yeah, he sounded exhausted and exasperated.
04:51And that's less than an hour later.
04:53Yeah, that sucks.
04:55That stinks all the way around.
04:56All right, 888-957-9570.
04:59What'd you learn?
05:00What'd you think of Brock without Christian?
05:02What'd you think of Mason?
05:03Where should this go from here?
05:05All of it.
05:06Anywhere you want to go, let's talk to you.
05:07Tony in the City with Willie and Debbie.
05:09Hi, Tony.
05:09Thanks for calling.
05:11Hey, fellas.
05:13Maybe you remember yesterday I called you guys and I said,
05:15we are going to kick the crap out of the Jets.
05:18Of course we remember.
05:20Yep, yep.
05:21Told you guys, man.
05:22The only thing that concerns me is that without CMC and with IU looking at 50%,
05:29I think that's why we had a hard time in the red zone so much.
05:33That's a little bit of a concern, but I think we'll be fine.
05:36But I love how Noah's talking about Brock.
05:38We got our guy.
05:39It's not an issue anymore.
05:41We're stoked.
05:42Yeah, great team, man.
05:44Tony, I agree with you.
05:46I think last night, and we're going to get to this a little bit more
05:49in the 3 o'clock hour.
05:50I think last night was a massive night for Brock Purdy.
05:53I know that nobody wants to get, you know, there are no sparkling stats here.
05:56There were no touchdown passes.
05:58But this is a man who was in many corners.
06:03He has been told through his career, yeah, that's fine.
06:06You're good.
06:07But come on, man.
06:09Christian, this is because of Christian and Kyle and Trent.
06:14And you're not going to be able to function without those weapons.
06:17Well, he went out and made Juwan Jennings look like a WR1 last night.
06:22That's what he did.
06:22He played without Christian McCaffrey.
06:24They put up over 30 points on Monday Night Football against one of the top
06:28rated, at least, coming into the year defenses in the whole NFL.
06:33It's a big deal.
06:34Yeah, it's a nice night.
06:35Nice night for Brock.
06:36Ultimately, whatever he does between now and January, if the Niners get there,
06:40will be secondary to what he does in January and hopefully February.
06:44Last night was a good, solid performance.
06:4719-29.
06:49He did what he had to do.
06:50He made most of the throws that he was asked to make.
06:53He had half an IUC and he didn't have CMC.
06:56So, yeah, you're going to have to run with a lot of the twos, I think, this year.
06:59And when Cowing and Pearsall gets healthy and they're going to start to get in the
07:03rotation, and you are probably going to have other injuries that crop up to some
07:07of your skilled guys.
07:08So, Brock's going to have to do this a lot this year.
07:11Let's go to Rick in Fremont next up.
07:13Hi, Rick.
07:13What's up?
07:14Yo, Willard and Debs.
07:14Thanks for calling.
07:17Hey, guys.
07:18Thanks for taking my call.
07:19Long time listener.
07:19Second time caller I called last week.
07:22I'm the New York Giants fan comparing the lowly Giants to the 49ers.
07:26But anyway, what a game last night.
07:28And I think, you know, I just want to take a moment to kind of set the scene a
07:31little bit.
07:32Points per game for the 49ers, 2023 and 2022.
07:372023, with Christian McCaffrey, 29.4 points per game.
07:43Without him, 20 points per game.
07:452022, with McCaffrey, 29.8.
07:49Without McCaffrey, 20.4.
07:52So, there's a nine-point swing when McCaffrey is actually in the lineup.
07:56Having said that, and I know it's a small sample size, one game this year without
08:00McCaffrey, 32 points.
08:02And I think the 49ers offense this year might be more better rounded than 2022
08:09and 2023.
08:10And that probably is because of better play and confidence in Purdy.
08:15JP doing, playing as well as he did.
08:18Maybe Shanahan realizing that he cannot run McCaffrey into the ground.
08:22You know, he needs him fresher when it comes to playoff time.
08:25So, he's had to diversify his playbook a little bit to look at other players and
08:29how to feed them the ball.
08:31But I think these guys are better, more well-rounded offense this year than they
08:36have been in 2022 and 2023.
08:38Yeah, Rick.
08:38I mean, time will tell on that.
08:41I would point to one thing you didn't point to there, and that's the offensive
08:44line.
08:45I just say this right now.
08:46If Brock Purdy gets that kind of time, and the running backs, whoever they are,
08:49get those kind of holes, the Niners are going to win the Super Bowl.
08:52Yeah.
08:52I mean, if that offensive line plays like that, you're not stopping them.
08:58Yeah, and it's not only the O-line, it's the scheme, and Kyle called a masterful
09:03game.
09:03The only one I didn't love is the third down, double reverse, pitch back.
09:07Oh, that didn't work.
09:08Yeah, that one hit me a little tone deaf.
09:10I didn't understand why, but hey, you know, other than that one play, Kyle was
09:14in his bag last night.
09:15We'll keep it going.
