00:00But on Tuesdays after games we go to our guy Mark Grandy, and he gives us like a professor
00:07the dang grades
00:10How did the 49ers great out this week did they pass did they fail let's find out
00:16It's time for Grandy's grades on Willard and did
00:21All right guys. It's been a while you guys were off last
00:25Thanksgiving good to have you back and good to have Grandy's grades back as well here on Willard and dibs
00:30We begin as we always do with the quarterback position after he did not play in Green Bay Brock was back
00:36It wasn't great though. I gave Brock Purdy a D for his performance only 11 completed passes
00:4194 yards had a ball inexplicably slip out of his hand in the second half a D for Brock Purdy on Sunday in Buffalo
00:49I graded him slightly on a curve a weather curve
00:51I gave him a C- everything you said is accurate
00:55He didn't do much and the big fumble mistake is something that that cost you a flat letter grade for sure
01:00but the conditions you couldn't really throw it a lot and
01:05You lost McCaffrey and your offensive line didn't do you a lot of favors so all things together
01:10I gave him a C- yeah, you know it was interesting. I'm kind of with you
01:14I think CC- for Brock Purdy because this is like this is not a quarterback game
01:19I know Josh Allen looked better than Brock because a he's Josh Allen and and B. You know that's his home stadium
01:26He's done that before I'm not saying that being having a hard time in the weather is not a problem it is
01:32but one little thing I noticed Brock couldn't get away from the pass rush as
01:38Well as effectively as he usually does and I can only think that's because of the footing
01:44Yeah, and and the snow on the ground and whatnot so
01:48Yeah, not a good game for Brock Purdy
01:50But obviously a weird week to sort of assess play for a lot of these guys, so I'm with you a C for Brock
01:59Fair enough up next skill positions
02:01This is wide receivers running backs and tight ends obviously the Niners had George Kittle back in this game
02:07He only had one catch on two targets
02:08It was the Niners first
02:10Offensive play of the game where he had his catch none other the rest of the game the running game was great all game long
02:16McCaffrey before going out with that injury was averaging nearly eight yards of pop Jordan Mason got 78 yards on 13 carries
02:23That's six yards of pop
02:24Garendo scored a touchdown
02:26You did not get a lot though from your past catchers a lot of that is what we just talked about with Brock Purdy as
02:31Well, but overall considering what you did on the ground. I gave the skill positions a C for their performance
02:37Yeah, I'm gonna. I'm gonna bump it up. Just a little bit more to I I guess what feels good to me is about a C
02:44Plus Kyle Ustek fumbled at the goal line that effectively kind of ended the game
02:48I'm gonna put that mistake into this but Christian McCaffrey and Jordan Mason and
02:54Isaac Garendo were all very effective in what they were being asked to do and
02:58See my previous point with regard to the receivers. It's just not it's just not a great situation
03:05to
03:06To pass the ball and catch the ball and and handle the ball and move up and down the field is very very difficult to do
03:13But they did not do it as well as the other team, so I'll go see plus yeah, and I'll be the bad guy
03:19It's a d-plus for me, and you look at the second half, and I was just going through they had 20 total
03:25Offensive snaps in the second half. That's it included in which there were a couple of drops Kittle and Debo
03:31He had a use check fumble pretty fumble doesn't count here Ricky Pearsall fell down on a route
03:37Which is a skill guy who and we'll get to that in coaching when we talk about?
03:42Footwear and they had four runs for zero or negative yards the second half was a complete non-factor
03:48Offensively so I'm I'm coming with the heavy hand here. It's a d-plus. No. I like it
03:52I like it to someone else is the bad guy for one exactly up next is the offensive line of course you were down to
03:58Starters Trent Williams at left tackle Aaron Banks at left guard Ben Bartsch filling in at left guard actually doing a pretty decent job
04:04Kind of surprisingly and Jalen Moore nowhere near as bad
04:07And I think as I think a lot of us were expecting him to be filling in for Trent Williams
04:11There were holes on the ground all game long Purdy was only sacked once
04:15But it still wasn't the cleanest pass blocking game from the Niners overall though
04:19I I was expecting it to be worse a c-plus for the offensive line
04:23Yeah, highest grade that I'm gonna give here in this session, and it's a flat C. Everything you said is accurate
04:28They ran the ball well Ben Bartsch
04:30Congratulations in your first start over there at left guard yet mostly twos on the line and yet
04:35He kept the heat off Brock for the most part in tough conditions
04:38I'm having a hard time figuring out why you guys gave them as low of a grade as you did you said you you said
04:44Nothing, but good things about them, and then both of you were like see
04:47What they do wrong the whole year has been about these guys committing penalties, and they didn't commit penalties
04:53My pony had the one okay like yeah, you get one you get two you don't get a you know what I mean like no
04:59Can I ask you guys back? What did you not like about the offensive line? He brought that clean?
05:05Like how many times was he under pressure we sacked once we had twice according to the box, okay?
05:10I give him a b-plus. They did that like they did their job probably better than almost anybody in the whole game
05:17Yeah, that's fair. It's the highest grade. I gave a b-plus a little spicy for me
05:21I just mean they couldn't even get a hundred yards pass right right right. There's a blizzard
05:25I'm like listening to you guys, and you both went on 30 seconds of compliments, and then went so I give him a C
05:30I'm just trying to figure out where the demerit was all the demerit was that
05:34Brock pretty didn't have much of a pocket from which to throw when they did decide to throw and running wise they were good
05:40So maybe C is a little bit low, but do you have any demerits crazy?
05:44Jake Brendel is not a starting center, and well, but that's that's sort of an object president. That's still counts my choice
05:50All right, you can go and chalk it up. Okay. All right fair enough
05:55It's above average
05:57Positive performance right those big guys were good up next we move to the defense the front seven
06:02This is the down lineman and the linebackers
06:05Man, it was ugly for this group. They could not tackle
06:08They were filling wrong lanes in the run game James Cook was running all over everybody
06:12I know you Mark Willard loved that helped you get a win in fantasy
06:15But it was not good for the Niners front seven gets an F for how they performed
06:20I don't I don't know if I can say much to refute that at this point. I mean just
06:25All the things you said wide open get the only thing I tell you what here you go
06:30I give them a d-minus instead of an F for this reason in this reason alone
06:36They're not very good. So they can't play good because they're not very good
06:41They did not they have very very few good players on that front seven
06:46So they played exactly like I would expect them to play
06:50Best thing I can say about and the coordinator didn't do a lot for him in terms of exotic help exotic coverages
06:56I also had it a d-minus partly graded for conditions because as you saw the offensive line on both sides was
07:03Dominant in the run game, so you take a bad run defense you mix in three or four inches of snow
07:09You got no chance. I gave him a d-minus. Maybe it's charity. Yeah tough situation no doubt
07:14But the bills on the other side had had the same thing going for them
07:17And they were a little better at being able to stop the offense up next is the secondary
07:22Obviously the passing numbers were not great for either team. So maybe you feel like this grade is a little bit
07:27Too strong in one way, but for me the secondary it still wasn't that good a lot of that was also in the run game
07:33You come down and Jair Brown. Yeah, we got to have a conversation about Jair Brown and his future as a
07:39team he's consistently
07:42Over-pursuing not holding outside leverage allowing any ball carrier to get outside and then past him
07:48I thought it was an okay day for the young rookie secondary members
07:53But still there were a couple of key moments the Khalil Shakir fourth and two wide open
07:57Gained like 17 yards and set up a touchdown a D for the secondary not really many positive plays for me
08:03Yes C plus because not that many negative plays you just pointed out the big ones
08:08I think in general their coverage down the field when Buffalo did try to throw was pretty solid and the run fits
08:14Outside of the the big miss on the cook 65 yard touchdown run
08:18Mustafa had a couple green had a couple they're asking the secondary to tackle much more than a secondary supposed to tackle
08:25I thought by and large they were good other than the big misses C plus
08:29Yeah, I I go see and and you know for a lot of the reasons you guys are talking about the Jair Brown
08:34Conversation back the whole way that they've sort of built the safety room. I think
08:39Deserves a conversation that feels like a weakness all of the sudden and that has not been the case the last few years
08:46So there's that I thought
08:48Charverius Ward was a little bit late on his break to try to get to the outside on the touchdown run
08:54Not the one for James Cook the short one. I think it was Ray Davis
08:58Yeah, the first touchdown. He also got boxed out by Matt Collins. Yeah, I think so
09:03but they didn't commit a lot of penalties and
09:06again, I give him a bump for conditions because
09:09When you're running around on snow and your job is to follow someone else and you have bad footwear
09:15That's hard
09:17That's not easy. So sure. We'll give him a seat. All right
09:21I see coming up next is special teams and there were two miss field goals in this game
09:26I do not blame Jake Moody for those miss miss field goals at all bad conditions as you guys are talking about
09:32That's that's nothing against Jake Moody in my opinion, but there was another another fumble on a kickoff return
09:38Debo Samuel did have a couple of really nice returns
09:41But then he put one on the ground after and it turned into a turnover for Buffalo
09:46You're just another major mistake on special teams. I can't give him anything better than a D plus
09:53That's what I gave him a plus for what happened
09:55I was thinking C minus but maybe that's because I'm grading on a curve and we're looking at a special teams group that hasn't had
10:01A good great all year. So I don't know what you know, it's like I look at this and I go
10:05Well, it's better than most of the games. They've played this year still bad
10:10You're still dropping the ball too much and I actually do I don't put on Jake Moody the long miss right before halftime
10:18How many yards was that 50?
10:2055 55
10:2245 the 55 yarder in the snow. Okay agreed a 45 yarder. That's not easy, but
10:30Come on
10:31The Bills kicker is me is knocking things right through the middle
10:34The other kick that Jake did make would have been good from 45
10:38Yeah, so kick it straight and and then it goes to the goalpost and you get points
10:43That's how it works and that's your job Tyler Bass didn't make a field goal in this game
10:47But but all of those extra points would be good from 45 like they're going through the top
10:52You know, you got to kick the ball straight. That's the that's how it works
10:55Yeah, you're not kicking it straight enough unless you want to start that baby
10:58You know a couple of clubs to the right and bend it back in you can do that
11:03You can bend it like Beckham with you on everything. You guys said I had it at a d-plus
11:07I do want to point out the one punt in the first half that they were able to down at the three-yard line
11:1357 yard net and
11:15Cowling had a nice return to of about 11 yards on on a punt in that second half
11:20But other than that you guys are spot-on with your breakdown. Yeah, Pat O'Donnell
11:23Maybe pushing Mitch Wisniewski, huh? Pushing him out and pushing him out the door and then last but not least is coaching
11:31This has been great that I have not changed for a number of weeks now the coaching staff gets another F from me
11:38It's something that you were talking about a lot today dibs and yesterday as well
11:41Backs up against the wall against a really good team in the weather
11:45You got to try to break out everything to try to win this football game and it seemed mostly vanilla for me once again
11:51There's a couple of other read but but that's the biggest one for me. I just did not see a team
11:57Perform act come out and play like their backs were up against the wall and to me that feels like it goes on the coaching
12:02staff and I will add in the
12:04Lack of appropriate footwear and as you know
12:06You know
12:07The shoes make the man and they were slipping in a sliding Evan Anderson falling down out of his stance and the opening
12:13Series they had two or three guys fall going in motion and that to me is a part of the umbrella of coaching
12:18but again, I'm gonna nod to the elements and give him a d-minus because
12:23Shanahan fourth quarter covered in snow angry face. I was kind of into it. Yeah, that's pretty good
12:29That's kind of into it as a great man once said money. It's got to be the shoes
12:33And so yes, I'm with you that that is a part of this conversation
12:37But yes for me
12:39I'll give it a D mainly just because it's the first letter in defense and I was much more offended by that side
12:45Then then the other side of the ball
12:48You know, look Kyle Shanahan's offensive game plan
12:51We may not have liked how it developed, but we know what it is
12:54He wanted to come out and run the ball and they were gashing
12:57They were absolutely gashing then Christian gets hurt then use check fumbles
13:01Now you're down double digits and the next thing, you know, everything is completely sideways
13:06So I don't think it was the most offensive coaching performance
13:09I've ever seen so not enough but not much better
13:12By the way, the we're talking about the the field goal attempt the 45-yard field goal attempt
13:16I that less on Jake Moody to me and more on Kyle Shanahan go for it on fourth down like
13:25I thought everything across like midfield. Maybe you get to the 40-yard line of Buffalo
13:31Especially once you got down, I mean more down territory thought crossed my mind
13:35But then when he had he had plenty of leg, you know what I mean?
13:39If he had slipped and they're sliding all over and the balls like, you know landing in the end zone
13:44It's something but he had plenty of leg that you got it
13:46You gotta make it third and 14 from the 33. He gives it to Mason. They run it for six
13:51So he had decided already at third and 14. He wanted a chunk and to kick it
13:56He had no designs on going for it
13:58Let's throw or to go and get yourself nine or ten and go for it on fourth and because that was going well
14:04Now you just completed one to Debo for six and the one before that and I thank you granny for the wonderful grades
14:10But the way it played out is first and ten at the 29. You're looking to get a touchdown and take the lead
14:17CMC gets hurt and I know he got hurt on the previous play
14:20He also lost five yards five and then in the hubbub and this could fall under the coaching umbrella delay a game
14:28So you lose five on the McCaffrey injury and he hobbles off so there was no stoppage and then it was just
14:33Maybe they were a little like stunned at the reality delay now. It's first and 20
