00:00I expect a good, clean fight, protect yourselves at all times, obey my commands at all times,
00:08touch them up.
00:09Here we go, Jeffrey Torres taking on Charles Garner.
00:14This one's scheduled for eight rounds in the super lightweight division.
00:18Garner in the red and white, Torres in the silver and white, and again, Torres for the
00:24first time fighting in front of fans in Connecticut.
00:26He's been in Springfield, Mass, plenty of times.
00:28He's fought almost all over.
00:30He's been under different promotional guidance throughout his career, but has remained close
00:34and loyal to the Roses, Lewis and Maryland, who have guided him from day one.
00:41Only two losses on his record.
00:43One was against Josh Wagner, a fight that I remember from 2021 in Springfield.
00:46Wagner, in fact, both fighters were 7-0 at the time.
00:50Wagner got the W, and I'll tell you what, no slouch whatsoever.
00:53Wagner now 18-0 in his career, and he's just climbing the ladder in super lightweight,
00:58Canadian-born Josh Wagner.
00:59And Torres had that setback, but came back with a couple of wins, and his only other
01:03loss was against Antonio Moran in 2022.
01:05He's stepping back in tonight for the first time since October.
01:10And Garner's had some tough competition too, Ray.
01:14He lost his first career fight in the MGM bubble during COVID in 2020.
01:19Also suffered a very close foot decision loss to Rolando Vargas, who was 7-1.
01:23That was back in 2022.
01:26So two fighters not afraid to mix it up with anybody.
01:28They've both taken tough fights.
01:30Very similar pedigree when you think about it.
01:33Should be a very close-knit, evenly matched bout.
01:36Garner came out off of Dawson in 10 seconds.
01:41He split right back to lefty.
01:43And you said Garner coming from the combat gear, I thought he would come out more aggressive
01:57this first round.
01:58Sure.
01:59You get conditioned to do so in TCL.
02:00You've got to come out in that one.
02:02You have one round to win against the point.
02:04And I would love to have seen him do that.
02:06I think it would have been a better strategy for him.
02:08Come out like you're fighting the same thing.
02:12I've had the opportunity to call three TCL events, and I'll tell you something, it can
02:18bode well for any style, whether you're a fast starter or a slow starter.
02:22You would think, in theory, that the fast starters would benefit, but I've seen some
02:26of the slower starters work well in that format, and sometimes guys you think would succeed
02:30don't do as well.
02:31It's been a very interesting dynamic, and I also wonder, and we'll get a chance to see
02:35that first hand tonight, how a fighter reacts going back to the regular format from TCL.
02:41You wonder if they pick up some habits along the way.
02:43But with that being said...
02:44Yeah.
02:45Like I said, I was hoping he came out fast like that.
02:51Forty-five seconds here to go in round one, and the only time I've had the opportunity
02:55to see Torres play was that aforementioned bout against Josh Wagner in 2021, and the
03:01one takeaway I had from that was that Torres really didn't let his hands go enough, and
03:05so we'll see if that's changed.
03:07It's been three years, so perhaps that could be a lesson learned, and he's done well going
03:11forward.
03:12He's won five and one in his last six fights since then, so he's definitely picked up something
03:16that's worked.
03:17The tall guy Torres is, you'd think he would have a jab with a straight right hand, but
03:23he's winging his punches.
03:24Yeah.
03:25That's why I said I would love to see him come out right away.
03:37The background is very hard to call.
03:40It depends on what you like better, Torres that wings his punches from left and right
03:45or Wagner who's patient and works everything down the middle.
03:50It was a very tough round to score.
03:51I think it was as even as you could get without really knowing which way it could go, and
03:56that's why I'm glad we have seven more to go in this fight, because these fighters do
03:59appear to have an opportunity to pace themselves going forward, and we'll see if Wagner picks
04:04it up a little bit here in round number two, being the quote-unquote road fighter, and
04:08you know sometimes what that entails, with Jeffrey Torres, there's definitely an added
04:13level of pressure fighting in front of his hometown fans for the first time in a while.
04:17Yeah.
04:18He did have a fight in Massachusetts, though sometimes Connecticut fan base does not travel
04:22as well to Mass, and again, being in New Jersey and Florida, the one thing I will say sometimes
04:27is that fighting on the road can definitely condition you from a mental standpoint to
04:31really be prepared for anything.
04:34You know, you've been fighting on the road, you come back home, now you get the fans cheering
04:37for you, not cheering for you, how are you going to blow your load off?
04:41There's more nerve-wracking for you.
04:44Round two underway here at Championship Jackpot, and Torres clipped Garner, who stumbled back
04:50onto the ropes.
04:51Not sure if he just lost his footing or if he really got hit pretty good there.
04:54I believe he lost his footing.
04:57Behind the jab, move.
05:03Torres is still only 27 years old, there's definitely a future for him in this sport,
05:08in this weight class, and if he picks up some more wins and starts a little win streak going
05:12forward, there could be an opportunity for him.
05:14He started fighting in 29, I'm sorry, started fighting at the age of 19, that was 8 years
05:21ago, so he's had a lot of on-the-job training and learning, as anybody would starting at
05:26that age.
05:28I'd love to see Torres use his reach, he's wanting to rumble inside, it may be his style,
05:37but I don't know if he'd want to do that with Garner, Garner's wide shoulders look strong.
05:44It's interesting you say that, Ray, because the fans who are watching have been with us
05:49all night, you saw Iman Lee in the first fight of the night, you saw Tommy Hyde, two fighters
05:53who had big height advantages, and they were using that jab.
05:56Yes.
05:57And it worked well for both of them, so this just gives you kind of a look at the difference
06:01in styles for fighters, despite reach advantages or height advantages, some guys are just more
06:06aggressive that way and maybe don't implement the jab enough.
06:09I tell every young kid that comes to my gym and wants to learn how to box, not fight,
06:14box, I always say the jab is an offensive and defensive weapon.
06:19It depends on you using it.
06:22It may be an offensive weapon, it may be a defensive weapon, but just use it.
06:29Crowd getting a little restless here, it seems like these two styles are kind of clashing
06:32with one another.
06:34You've seen a lot of tie-ups, fighters getting entangled.
06:40Garner wants to box, Torres wants to get in there and rumble, let them punches go, and
06:49they're getting in tight, and as soon as they get in tight, Torres grabs.
06:54Not that he's purposely doing it, but that's his style, he loops on.
06:59It's kind of almost a reflex if you think about it at this point, and if you are out
07:03there establishing that jab, you would have less of those tie-ups.
07:07See, he went in square, and as soon as he lays on him, he just grabs.
07:19You hear Garner's corner saying, everything's looping, and Ray, you pointed that out in
07:22round number one.
07:23A lot of wide punches from Torres, wide stance.
07:31Been a very interesting fight so far, it seems like neither fighter has really picked up
07:35on the rhythm of his opponent yet.
07:37It's hard to score, it depends on the style you like.
07:39That's why we have eight, and perhaps that's why it was scheduled as such.
07:43Two rounds in the books, don't go anywhere, we've got more on Swerve Combat TV.
08:19Welcome back to Mohegan Sun Arena and Swerve Combat TV.
08:44Michael Peretti joined by Sucre, Ray Oliveira.
08:47The championship jackpot right now, we're watching round number three between
08:51Jeffrey Torres and Charles Garner.
08:53Torres in the silver and white, Garner in the red and white.
08:56And so far, very awkward and tough to score two rounds in the books.
09:03Mickey Gonzalez stepping between both fighters, Ray, perhaps saying, let's see a little bit
09:07less of the holding and more of the boxing.
09:10He's getting a little bit upset with that, but it's the style.
09:13You know, Torres just wants to run in and wing it, and Garner doesn't know what he's
09:20got to do.
09:21I think Garner should just sit down and allow Torres to run at him.
09:24He's running at him.
09:27Like I said earlier, get him out of there, let him run at you, step to the side and
09:30collar it.
09:41See, that's right there, they're both getting inside, but both are looking to grab or do
09:46something.
09:53Yeah, you can certainly sense some of that frustration from Garner, who is trying to
09:56box.
09:57He's comfortable on the perimeter doing that, he's working his jab, and then Torres
10:01kind of charges in to get exactly what you just got right there.
10:04I think this is a style of boxing where losing, the fighters don't know how to fight
10:09inside.
10:11They both want their space, but they're getting close to each other and neither one
10:16knows how to fight inside but to grab.
10:22And that's the style I believe that we're starting to lose today.
10:25Everybody wants to fight from a distance.
10:29Inside boxing is what's going to get you there.
10:31And that's where the officiating comes into play, because some referees will make you
10:35fight out of it, as opposed to just stepping right in.
10:38Now in this case, Ricky Gonzalez I don't think has a choice.
10:41I don't think either fighter would be too prone to fighting out of it.
10:44He may have to be the one who steps in there and pulls him apart to keep the fight going.
10:48But you've seen referees in the past, and they'll tie it up a little bit, they'll say
10:51fight out of it.
10:52Yeah, fight yourself out of it.
10:53And that's what Ricky's trying to do.
10:55He's tied the first two rounds of, you know, fight yourself out of it.
10:58Now he's seeing that they're not fighting themselves out of it.
11:01They're just holding on, waiting for him to come in and say break.
11:03Because they want that outsideness.
11:06Touch the body, Charles.
11:07You've got to get used to being the fight in there.
11:09They grab subconsciously as they almost get tied up again, and then they do.
11:14But they know in the back of their minds that Ricky Gonzalez is going to step in
11:17and push him apart.
11:18So if they feel any sense of trouble, they can grab tight and just wait for the
11:21referee to come in and pull him apart.
11:24That's the fifth time now in the last 40 seconds.
11:26And we're going to get a timeout here.
11:31So Gonzalez does the talking to Jeffrey Torres.
11:36And I would be led to believe that it was about the holding.
11:40Yeah, he's charging in.
11:42And as soon as he gets the rope, he's grabbing him.
11:46Round three of the book says Charles Gardner's got a long thread coming off his shorts.
11:51That thing's about to stretch across the ring.
11:53That's the thing about wearing tassels.
11:55You don't want to pull it.
11:56You might just take my pants off.
11:59We'll get some replay action.
12:00There's really not much to replay here.
12:02Torres is charging in.
12:04That was beautiful, what Gardner did right there.
12:06He lands the sharp punches.
12:08But again, Torres charges in.
12:10He's gotten his better with his hips and he's grabbing.
12:14Now this is the action we're seeing.
12:16But most of it was holding.
12:17It was.
12:18And you wonder if you're Gardner's corner, if you're trying to keep an eye on those looping punches.
12:23And I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, that the middle is there for the take and for Gardner.
12:27If he can execute through the middle, right down the pipe, that perhaps that might
12:32start Torres in his track.
12:34Sometimes the fighter will think twice if he lands or eats a couple of shots on the way in.
12:38And it's just all subjective, but there's also that possibility that it could work.
12:42And this is also where you want the corner to have the experience.
12:46Yeah.
12:47You know, a lot of these guys, this is what people say all the time,
12:51that does your cornerman need to have boxing experience?
12:54Absolutely.
12:55I say yeah.
12:56He should.
12:57You know?
12:59Unless he's did over 300 pro bouts, then he doesn't.
13:04But he did probably 120.
13:07He needs boxing experience to know in situations like this, what do I do?
13:11Have you been in that situation?
13:12Yes.
13:13Or seen that situation?
13:14And what did that fighter do?
13:16And you've got to tell me what to do.
13:18I think that's exactly it.
13:19It's the situational awareness that a former pro brings to the ring.
13:23Or someone that's been in the sport long enough.
13:25Knows and has seen every scenario possible.
13:29You don't have to be a fighter, but you have to be around long enough.
13:32What do you do in this situation?
13:34What have you told someone in this situation to do?
13:38Round number four.
13:39This one's scheduled for eight.
13:41Michael Parente and Sucre Ray Oliveira bringing you all the action from Championship Jackpot.
13:46Presented by CES Boxing on Score of Combat.
13:51Once again, Jeffrey Torres in the silver and white from New Haven, Connecticut
13:54taking on Charles Garner in the red and white from Buffalo, New York.
13:59If I was Torres, Conor, I'd tell him, keep doing what you're doing.
14:03You know, it's working for you.
14:05You're the one coming forward, keep doing what you're doing.
14:08As for Garner, stay lefty.
14:11Stay lefty, let him charge in and step to your right side.
14:17Nice right hand there by Torres.
14:19And this time it's Garner tying up as he charges his way in.
14:22I think Torres is getting a little bit of space here in this round, Ray.
14:25And he's done a better job on the outside.
14:28Landing some of these shots.
14:31We've seen a little less holding as we, as I say, we see it now.
14:35But at least this time...
14:36It's a lot less.
14:37Yeah, it's a lot less.
14:38It has been less in round four.
14:40Both fighters are getting their space now at the throw punches.
14:43They're starting to stay in the middle of the ring instead of the ropes.
14:46If I'm Ricky Gonzalez, I go back to what we said in round four.
14:49I let them try to fight out of it.
14:52I know there's a consequence to that.
14:54Feet get tangled, guys go down, they hit the deck, but...
14:58You don't want to slow the pace too dramatically.
15:01See, what Torres wants to do, he wants to keep the fight in the middle of the ring.
15:05Every time he gets to the ropes, he's falling on top of Garner.
15:09Keep him in the middle of the ring.
15:11Ooh, here's the kick left hand!
15:13Right hand, I'm sorry, by Torres.
15:15And he sends Garner crashing to the canvas.
15:19Like I said, he kept me in the middle of the ring.
15:21That left hook connected.
15:23Don't run to the ropes.
15:25Keep him in the middle of the ring.
15:27A huge break here for Torres.
15:30Who now sees the blood in the water here for the final 15 seconds.
15:34He's going to try to reload on Garner.
15:36Another shot there, another overhead right by Torres.
15:41Garner's just trying to stay out of harm's way and survive the bell.
15:44Another choreographed device by Torres.
15:46Garner's stumbling into the ropes, and down he goes again!
15:51Is that... Is that a...
15:53I don't know, is that a knockdown after the bell?
15:57I haven't even heard the bell.
15:59The bell was sounding.
16:01You got better hearing than I do.
16:03So the bell rings, Garner gets up, they're going to wave it off, that's it.
16:06Jeffrey Torres with the knockout victory!
16:09What a sensational knockout for Torres.
16:11What a sensational knockout for Torres.
16:18Ray, he only had about 25 seconds after that knockdown.
16:21Yeah.
16:22To score the knockdown, or the knockout rather.
16:24You don't always see it work that way, but Torres...
16:28I wouldn't even say remained poised.
16:30He came firing in there and just landed enough,
16:32and he knocked down Garner at the bell.
16:34And although Garner got to his feet,
16:36Ricky Gonzalez says that's enough for him tonight.
16:38Torres kept doing what he was doing.
16:40He kept doing what he was doing.
16:42Charging in and throwing it wild.
16:44The whole fight was Garner.
16:46He wanted to stay in the middle of the ring,
16:49which is where Torres probably wanted to stay.
16:51You see right here.
16:53The fight looked better when he stood in the middle of the ring.
16:56Every time he got to the ropes, they fell on each other.
16:59And no punches were thrown.
17:01But in the middle of the ring is where both fighters were landing.
17:04But it kept Torres, who threw that wild left hook.
17:07And it caught him.
17:10That left hook caught him on the body.
17:12When I said left the first time,
17:14I thought it might have been the right, but it was the left.
17:16Now you see the closing sequence here.
17:18Again, it was an overhand left that sent Garner stumbling.
17:21Torres followed with the right hand right at the bell.
17:24And Ricky Gonzalez says that's enough for Charles Garner.
17:30And listen, Garner was doing well up until that point.
17:34When he got clipped with that left hand, that changed everything.
17:37It definitely was. He was in the fight.
17:39Like I said, those first three rounds could have went either way.
17:43But that fourth round, he stood in the middle of the ring.
17:46That's where he probably didn't want to be, in the middle of that ring.
17:49And I'll be honest, I'd be interested in seeing what the scorecards were
17:52before that sequence and where Garner was and where Torres was
17:55because it was a very close and sometimes walking fight.
17:58And finally, Torres found his distance and scored the knockout win.
18:02And again, credit to Torres for closing it out as well.
18:05He only had about 20, 25 seconds, but he got it done.
18:08He got the knockout.
18:09Because you never know what might happen if Garner gets his footing back
18:12between rounds.
18:13This thing goes eight.
18:14The scorecards could turn out entirely different.
18:16But in any event, it's a victory for Torres.
18:19Let's send it to Margaret Presto with the particulars.
18:36Ladies and gentlemen.
18:40At two minutes and 59 seconds into round number four,
18:45Gonzalez picks the ball up there at,
18:48for your winner,
18:50Jeffrey Albertito Torres!
18:59And so there it is, a fourth round knockout victory for Jeffrey Torres
19:03who improves to 13-2.
19:05Seventh knockout win of his career
19:07and a beautiful homecoming victory for this young fighter.
19:11Sky's the limit for Torres.
19:12Just 27 years of age.
19:14Very much looking forward to this.
