00:00You danced with Fiddler on the roof.
00:24You thrilled to the sound of music.
00:27Now get ready to smile with Lyle, Lyle the Kindly Viking, a VeggieTales musical, coming
00:39spring 2001 from Big Idea.
00:49Hi there, I'm Phil Vischer, the founder of Big Idea Productions.
00:52When we made the very first VeggieTales video seven years ago, there were only three of
00:56us working out of a small storefront on the north side of Chicago with no heat.
01:01We had no idea what we were doing, we just wanted to tell stories that could help teach
01:05kids great values from the Bible in a fun new way.
01:08Now seven years later, we've sold more than 20 million VeggieTales videos, and we've been
01:12joined by artists from some of the world's greatest animation studios, eager to use their
01:17gifts to help make the world a better place.
01:20Now making VeggieTales videos is a lot of fun, but there's something I've wanted to
01:23do since I was nine years old, make movies.
01:27So I'm thrilled to tell you today that Big Idea is now in production on our very first
01:31theatrical feature film.
01:33I can't tell you any more than that, but you'll find out more about it on our next VeggieTales
01:38video, Lyle the Kindly Viking.
01:40Sunday morning values, Saturday morning fun, now coming to a theater near you.
01:51I thank God for this day, for the sun in the sky, for my mom and my dad, for my piece of
01:59apple pie, for our home on the ground, for his love that's all around.
02:06That's why I say thanks every day, because a thankful heart is a happy heart.
02:15I'm glad for what I have, that's an easy way to start, for the love that he shares,
02:22cause he listens to my prayers.
02:25That's why I say thanks every day.
02:45A wise man once said not to be afraid of greatness.
03:13Some are born great.
03:15Some achieve greatness.
03:17And some have greatness thrust upon them.
03:21Who is it?
03:26Um, your highness, the king was wondering if you could make him a sandwich.
03:34It's three o'clock in the morning.
03:36Ah, yeah, but he says that he's the king and whatever he says goes.
03:42Well, I'm the queen and the king can make his own sandwich.
03:49Okay.
03:53You can't do this to me.
03:55I'm the queen.
03:57Oh, you wanna bet?
04:00The king can do whatever he wants.
04:02He's the king.
04:05And don't come back.
04:09Don't you think that might have been a little harsh?
04:11Oh, no way.
04:12If she got away with that, no one would listen to you.
04:16Well, what am I gonna do now?
04:20It looks like we're gonna have to find you a new queen.
04:24Hmm, make me a sandwich.
04:34This is the story of a great person.
04:36It's hard to say whether our hero was born that way
04:40or was just placed in the right place at the right time and decided to do the right thing.
04:45I suppose you can be the judge of that.
04:47Oh, and one more thing.
04:49Our hero isn't a king.
04:51Just an ordinary girl.
05:06Now, wait a minute.
05:23Wait a minute.
05:24Patsy.
05:25Yeah?
05:26Well, let me see if I got this.
05:28You saw your friend steal an apple.
05:31Yeah, that's right.
05:32Yeah, it wasn't hers, but she took it.
05:35Yep.
05:36And now you don't know what to do.
05:38Yeah, what should I do?
05:40What do you think you should do?
05:42Well, I suppose I should tell her it was wrong and that she should pay for it.
05:49Sounds like a good answer.
05:51Yeah, but I'm too scared.
05:55Esther.
05:56Yeah, Cousin Mordecai?
05:58How long have I been your cousin?
06:00Well, pretty much forever.
06:02Eh, give or take.
06:04Have I ever steered you wrong?
06:07Well, no, I guess.
06:09You never need to be afraid to do what's right.
06:15Do you remember that song your grandmother used to sing?
06:19Um.
06:23You mean the one about God being on our side and not having to be afraid?
06:28Yeah, I remember that one.
06:30Good.
06:31But what if she doesn't want to be my friend anymore?
06:34Oh, Essie, you can do the right thing.
06:37And there are problems out there a lot bigger than stolen apples.
06:45Like that one.
06:47It's Haman.
06:48That guy hates me.
06:50I gotta get scarce.
06:51Ahem.
06:59Make way for Haman, the king's right-hand man.
07:08Hello, people of Persia.
07:10His Royal Highness, King Xerxes,
07:14finds himself, for reasons that do not concern you, in need of a new queen.
07:22So, I would like to ask all eligible young ladies to please come with me.
07:32Ah, young lady, that means you.
07:37If it's all the same to the king, I think I'd rather stay right here.
07:42I did not ask you if you were interested.
07:45The king needs a queen.
07:49Get in the wagon.
07:51Um, Essie, for your own good, you should probably go.
07:56What? But I...
07:58Sir, I need to stay here so I can take care of my...
08:02Shh! Did you shush me?
08:04What? No, I was shushing...
08:06Hey, I know you. You're Mordecai.
08:10Hello, Haman.
08:12You can call me sir.
08:13You know, we both work for the king, but compared to me, you are a gnat.
08:20It's a G, silent. It's gnat.
08:22Are you calling me a gnat?
08:24No, just correcting your pronunciation.
08:27Are you calling me stupid?
08:29Uh, no.
08:30You, get in the wagon. You, bow to me.
08:34Uh, no.
08:35Bow!
08:35No.
08:36Bow!
08:37I bow to no one except my god and my king.
08:41Get in the wagon. But I want to stay with my...
08:44Did you shush me again?
08:46No!
08:46Ori!
08:47Essi!
08:48Go!
08:48I'll explain later.
08:56Mark my words, old man.
08:58One of these days.
09:07Essi.
09:08Essi!
09:09Are you there?
09:11Cousin Mordecai?
09:12Mordecai, what's going...
09:13Shh!
09:13Okay, okay. Sorry about all the shushing.
09:19But look, Haman hates us, hates our whole family.
09:22If he knew I was your cousin, he'd hate you too.
09:26And then, you could be in grave danger.
09:30Esther, you mustn't let anyone here know that you're part of our family.
09:36But I don't even want to be here.
09:37Why do I have to be here?
09:40Oh, Essi.
09:41I don't know the future.
09:43But God does.
09:45Maybe there's a reason.
09:48I'll come visit you again.
10:00Tell me why I don't understand.
10:06Tell me why, or show me your hand.
10:12Tell me why, because I can't see my way through.
10:22What now should I do?
10:42Puppies are cuddly.
10:44Puppies are cute.
10:47They're never nasty or mean.
10:52I give a home to all the lost puppies.
10:56If ever one day I were queen!
11:00Yes, that was contestant number 37, Miss Akmetha.
11:18What am I going to do with all those dogs?
11:23Next!
11:24Ah, yes.
11:26Now, all the way from Babylon, home of the hanging gardens, Miss Babylon!
11:42Go ahead.
11:44What am I supposed to do again?
11:46A song!
11:47You're supposed to sing a song.
11:49Didn't you prepare anything?
11:51I guess I wasn't expecting to get this far.
11:57Well, please sing something.
12:00You're making me look bad.
12:03Let's see.
12:06Remember that song your grandmother used to sing?
12:11Okay, I've got something.
12:13The battle is not ours, we look to God above, for he will guide us safely through, and guard
12:34us with his love.
12:37So do not be afraid, we need not run and hide, for there is nothing we can't face, when God
12:56is at our side.
13:00Oh, yes, we have a new queen!
13:05What's your name, dear?
13:09Ladies and gentlemen, may I introduce you to Queen Esther!
13:30Essy, Essy, I just heard the news!
13:40You're the queen of all...
13:43Persia!
13:45Yep.
13:46Well, you gotta be at least a little excited.
13:51Nobody even asked me if I wanted to be queen.
13:55Oh, Essy, you always did have a mind of your own.
13:59I always liked that about you.
14:04Oh, don't worry, there must be a reason.
14:08But hey, tomorrow you'll be introduced to the court!
14:11Oy, that'll be fun!
14:14Oh, get some rest, Queen Essy.
14:17My cousin, Queen of Persia!
14:20Who knew?
14:22Mordecai, the king, what's he like?
14:25Oh, he's sharp, real sharp.
14:28I think you're really gonna like him!
14:37Do you think she's gonna like me?
14:40Oh, you bet she will!
14:42You're the king!
14:43Everybody likes you, under penalty of death!
14:47Well, yeah, but, you know, even if I weren't the king,
14:51say I was one of those guys who cleans up after the camels,
14:54or a lawyer or something, do you still think?
14:58No doubt about it!
14:59You're big and strong, charming, handsome!
15:03Why, any girl in the whole kingdom
15:05would be happy to make you a sandwich!
15:07King or no king?
15:10You really think so?
15:12Oh, I know so!
15:14Well, all right then, bring her in!
15:27Ah!
15:37Hello, king!
15:39Who are you?
15:40I am Big Fan, your royal chef!
15:43Well, what are you doing here?
15:46I don't remember inviting...
15:48Every newlywed needs a cake, no?
15:55Oh, my!
15:58Well, that's lovely!
16:00You made that for me?
16:02Oui!
16:03Oh, you shouldn't have!
16:04It looks delicious!
16:06Why don't you bring me over a piece?
16:09Well, you know, I was thinking you could come over here to eat it!
16:16Well, I always eat right here on my throne!
16:19Why would I need to come over...
16:21Oh, king, it's the light!
16:24The light in this particular spot is just right!
16:27You can only appreciate the full beauty of this confectionary masterpiece
16:31in their proper light!
16:34Oh, light, huh?
16:38That makes sense, I guess!
16:39I suppose I could come over there!
16:46Hey, who's this guy?
16:49Uh, I am the royal chef!
16:53I've never seen you!
16:55I'm, uh, new!
16:57He made me a cake!
17:00Isn't that nice?
17:02Did you invite him?
17:05No!
17:06Did you tell him what can happen to someone who appears before you on the invitation?
17:11Well, no!
17:13I was too busy thinking about that cake!
17:15Doesn't it look yummy?
17:19Stop!
17:19It's a trap!
17:28Why's there a piano on my cake?
17:37Seize them!
17:47Hey, aren't you the Peony Brothers?
17:50The most wanted peas in Persia?
17:53That's right we are!
17:55And we could have taken over the kingdom if it wasn't for that meddling queen!
18:04You saved my life!
18:07Well, actually, your highness, it was the good guard Mordecai.
18:11He alerted me.
18:12It was Mordecai who saved your life.
18:17Oh, well, Mordecai, I, uh...
18:20Ah, king!
18:22What should the punishment be for these two dangerous criminals?
18:26The most wanted peas in Persia,
18:29who appeared before you uninvited and tried to drop a piano on your head?
18:37Well, let's see.
18:39It should probably be pretty stiff, huh?
18:42What do you think?
18:44I say the punishment should be...
18:47banishment to the island of perpetual tickling!
18:56You don't mean...
18:58The island where you are tickled day and night?
19:01Night and day!
19:02Without stop?
19:03Not even if you say it from the place!
19:18No!
19:24There are two things you don't do in Persia.
19:27One of them is trying to drop a piano on a king's head.
19:32The other is appearing before him uninvited.
19:35The Peony brothers found these things out the hard way.
19:41Now, it might seem that things are going pretty well for Esther and Mordecai.
19:45After all, they saved the king's life.
19:47But Haman had something else up his sleeve.
19:50Or wherever.
19:51You see, nothing could be worse for Haman
19:54than for his enemy Mordecai to be on a king's good side.
19:58If the king liked Mordecai more than him,
20:01it might jeopardize his position as the second in command.
20:04So Haman came up with his own sneaky little plan.
20:09Your highness, I believe there is much to fear.
20:13Really? Those peonies are no longer here?
20:16A much greater danger may await you now!
20:22How's that possible?
20:24With permission, your highness, I'll tell you how.
20:30Go on.
20:31It's my duty to inform you and if I'm correct
20:35To ignore this great emergency would be neglect
20:40It's the motto of my office, serve and protect
20:45There are those who walk among us who show no respect
20:50Really?
20:51The law must be adjusted
20:54There are those who can't be trusted
20:58Oh my goodness, tell me about these people!
21:01A sneaky little family who do sneaky little things
21:05Who stick their sneaky noses into matters of the king
21:08I fear if they're not dealt with, the prospect makes me weep
21:13A zucchini-shaped sarcophagus is where you'll sleep
21:18Really? The nerve! I am disgusted!
21:23There are those who can't be trusted
21:26That sure doesn't sound like a nice family
21:29Nope!
21:30Your highness, I believe we must act with speed
21:34Agreed! Say the word, I'll give you what you need!
21:38A simple solution, but you must act now!
21:42How can I help?
21:44With permission, your highness, I'll tell you how
21:49Go on.
21:50After careful calculation, I've got just the thing
21:54We'll send them to the dreaded Isle of Pickling
21:57But before I can take action, we have to close that deal
22:02And it needs a kingly imprint of your royal seal
22:06I agree!
22:08They must be busted!
22:10There are those who can't be trusted
22:15That sneaky little family who do sneaky little things
22:18Who stick their sneaky noses into matters of the king
22:21The crimes against our kingdom, their punishment is stay!
22:27The Isle of Endless Tickling is where they'll sleep
22:30The law is now adjusted
22:34For those who can't be trusted
22:50Mordecai is busted!
22:54There are those who can't be trusted
23:10What's this?
23:13Oi!
23:16Izzy!
23:19Izzy! Izzy!
23:21Cousin Mordecai?
23:23What is it?
23:24Oh, he's done it!
23:25He's finally done it!
23:27Who? Done what?
23:29Look!
23:31What's this?
23:32It's an edict!
23:33In just a few days, all of us, our whole family
23:37Will be sent to the Isle of Perpetual Tickling
23:40What?
23:42Who? Who did this?
23:43Oh, who do you think?
23:45Aemon!
23:46I told you, he hates us!
23:47Hates our whole family!
23:48And now he's done it!
23:50He got the king to sign this!
23:52And we'll all be banished!
23:56What are you gonna do?
23:58That's just it!
23:59I can't do anything!
24:01I'm just a guard!
24:03But you!
24:04You're the queen!
24:07What do you mean?
24:08You must go to him!
24:10You must go to the king!
24:11What?
24:12Don't you know what happens to people who appear before the king uninvited?
24:16Esther!
24:17Remember the Peony Brothers?
24:19Esther!
24:20There is no other way!
24:21You are the only one who can stop this!
24:24No!
24:25No, I'm not gonna!
24:27I didn't even want to be the queen!
24:29No!
24:30You're smart, Mordecai!
24:31Think of another way!
24:32Esther!
24:33There is no other way!
24:36I wasn't even brave enough to go to my friend about the apple
24:39And now you want me to go to the king?
24:42Even if he doesn't banish me for showing up
24:44Why would he listen to me?
24:46I mean, Aemon is his right-hand man!
24:50I can't tell you what to do
24:52But I can tell you this
24:54You wanted to know why you were here
24:57Why you became queen
24:59I told you God must have a reason!
25:02Esther, perhaps he put you here for such a time as this
25:08Perhaps this is the reason
25:12Esther, you never have to be afraid to do what's right
25:18I'll pray for you
25:20We'll all pray for you
25:30Tell me why I don't understand
25:37Tell me why or show me your hand
25:43Tell me why because I can't see my way through
25:54What now should I do?
26:12The battle is not ours
26:31We'll look to God, O God
26:41For he will guide us safely through
26:45And guard us with his love
26:50I will not be afraid
26:55I will not run and hide
27:02For there is nothing I can't face
27:07When God is at my side
27:11No, there is nothing I can't face
27:16When God is at my side
27:22The battle is not ours
27:27We'll look to God, O God
27:32For he will guide us safely through
27:37And guard us with his love
27:49Another one of them wise guys once said
27:51that in the moment of truth
27:53a great person doesn't have to think much
27:55about what they're going to say or do
27:57They just speak and do what's right
28:00Esther knew what she had to do was right
28:02So, she figured she didn't have to be nervous
28:05All right, so she was a little nervous
28:07Give her a break
28:12Hi, Queen
28:23So, we're all set
28:24I got the big boat reserved for Friday
28:27Two more days and we'll be rid of
28:29that dangerous family for ever
28:32Good work, Haman
28:34What would I do without you?
28:43Hey, who invited the Queen?
28:46Did you invite the Queen?
28:48Uh, no, I don't think I did
28:56But that's okay
28:58Come on over here, Queenie-poo
29:05I don't know if anybody told you
29:07but popping up uninvited
29:09is generally discouraged around here
29:12By death or banishment
29:15But my little Queenie-poo
29:17can visit me anytime she wants
29:21So, what is it you want?
29:22Just a little something
29:23I don't know what it is
29:26So, what is it you want?
29:27Just tell me
29:28Whatever you want, it's yours
29:34Um, if it, uh
29:36If it pleases the King
29:37there's something that I'd like to
29:40I'd like you and Haman
29:42to come to dinner tonight
29:46Oh, isn't that nice?
29:48She's inviting us over for dinner
29:51You bet
29:52We'd love to come
29:54What time you want us over?
29:56Uh, say eight?
29:58Eight it is
30:00See you then
30:02Oh, that's nice
30:03Yep, she's a keeper
30:10Now, don't get me wrong
30:11Showing up uninvited before His Highness
30:13is a very brave thing to do
30:16But telling the King
30:17that his right-hand man is a weasel
30:19is especially difficult
30:21What if he doesn't believe her?
30:23If the weasel stays,
30:25well, let's just say
30:26it wouldn't be so hot for our girl
30:28No, Esther was looking
30:30for just the right moment
30:31to spring the news on him
30:33Okay, this is for the wedgie
30:35It's for the wedgie?
30:38Make it an easy one
30:39Okay
30:40Who was the youngest Jackson?
30:43Oh, I think I know that one
30:45It's, uh, wasn't it, uh
30:48Tito?
30:49Yeah, Tito
30:50Nope, not Tito
30:51Not Tito?
30:52Nope
30:53I thought for sure it was Tito
30:55Nope, not Tito
30:56Not Tito?
30:57Um, Your Highness
31:01The real reason I asked you over tonight
31:03was to
31:05was to
31:09to see if you would both like to join me
31:11for dinner again tomorrow night
31:15Well, sure
31:16Yeah, that sounds great
31:17I'd love to come
31:19Are you sure it wasn't Tito?
31:20Nope, not Tito
31:23Nope, not Tito
31:30Well, hello there
31:35I guess there's not much to say
31:37Hey, Mordecai
31:38Seeing how in two days
31:39you'll be waking up in Chuckle City
31:43You know, I just came from dinner
31:45with the king and queen
31:47and they invited me over again
31:49tomorrow night
31:52I guess they must like me
31:54Why don't you like me, Mordecai?
31:59You know, it wouldn't be too hard
32:01to show me that you like me
32:02Just a little bow, that's all
32:05Is that so hard?
32:07Who knows?
32:08I'm a very influential guy
32:10I might be able to work something out
32:13for you and your family
32:14Arrogance is not fitting for a fool, Heyman
32:18Much less is lying fitting
32:20for a right-hand man
32:22I'll never bow to you
32:25Hey, oh yeah
32:27Well, maybe this foolish right-hand man
32:30can arrange for you to take your trip
32:33to Tickletown tonight
32:439.28 AM
32:45King puts on his slippers
32:47and brushes his teeth
32:499.32 AM
32:51King cuts himself shaving
32:53Ouch, I remember that one
32:56How about something more recent?
32:58You got anything more recent?
33:01Thanks for doing this
33:02You know, it really does help me sleep
33:051.40 AM
33:06King is joined by Heyman in the throne room
33:09I really like it when you read me these records
33:11I guess you could say
33:13it's the story of me
33:151.45 AM
33:16Heyman leaves to get Queen
33:181.47 AM
33:19Chef arrives with wedding cake
33:211.50 AM
33:23King stands up to eat cake
33:25Oh, this is a good one
33:26Excitement, drama
33:281.51 AM
33:29The king's life is saved by the guard Mordecai
33:321.52 AM
33:33Wait, wait, wait
33:35Did you say Mordecai saved my life?
33:38He's that little grape with the mustache, right?
33:41Yep
33:42Mordecai, huh?
33:43Do we ever do anything to thank him for that?
33:46Nope
33:47That's a shame
33:49Maybe I ought to give him a card or something
33:51You know, to show my appreciation
33:54I wish I were more creative with things like that
33:57Uh, come in
34:00King, I have a most urgent request
34:03I'm wondering if you can...
34:06Wait a minute there, Heyman
34:07Let me ask you something
34:09I need a little creative advice
34:13Okay, what is it?
34:15Okay, there's this really great guy that I really want to thank
34:19You know, show him my appreciation for something he did
34:22You got any ideas?
34:25Well, King, I'm flattered
34:27I was thinking of a card or something
34:30Oh, no, no, no
34:31Cards are nice
34:33But this sounds like a very special guy
34:37It sounds like the kind of guy who deserves a parade
34:43Parade?
34:46Yeah, I think this guy should be dressed in royal robes
34:50And be marched through the whole city on your horse
34:56And maybe you should even let him wear one of your crowns
35:00I guess he is pretty special
35:02And one of your most noble princes should lead this man through the streets proclaiming
35:10This is a really neat guy
35:13The king really likes him
35:15He's brave and has rugged good looks
35:26You see, Heyman
35:27You're the creative one around here
35:29What would I do without you?
35:31Oh, well, you know
35:33Thank you, your highness
35:34I, uh...
35:34All those things you mentioned
35:36Every last one
35:38Do that for the good god Mordecai
35:41The man who saved my life
35:45And you be the one to go with him on that parade, okay?
35:49I knew I could count on you
35:51Lucky thing you dropped by
35:53Now, what was it you wanted?
35:56You know, maybe you should just ask me tomorrow
35:59I'm getting kind of sleepy
36:01Good night
36:02They say that pride comes before a fall
36:05Looks like nobody told that to Heyman
36:08But if Mordecai, Esther, and their whole family are gonna be saved
36:12Esther's gotta come through
36:14And she's only got one more chance
36:32I wonder where Heyman could be?
36:41See ya, Heyman!
36:42Thanks for the parade!
36:45Laugh all you want!
36:47You won't be laughing tomorrow!
36:50No, wait
36:51You will
36:52Oh, never mind
36:54Hi, sorry I'm late
36:58The real reason I called both of you here again tonight
37:01Is to...
37:02Is to...
37:05To...
37:06Remember, Esther
37:08You never need to be afraid to do what's right
37:13Your highness
37:14Someone is plotting against my family
37:17Tomorrow, my people and I will be banished to the island of perpetual tickling
37:21What?
37:22Banish my queen?
37:24Well, who would dare?
37:26It's Heyman
37:28Is this true?
37:29I don't know what she's talking about
37:31She's crazy
37:33It is true
37:34Can you prove this, George?
37:36I'm telling you, she's making it up
37:41Wait a minute
37:42That's Mordecai
37:43I just gave him a parade
37:46Mordecai is my cousin
37:48His family is my family
37:53You had me banish the man who saved my life?
37:56And my own queen?
38:00For your punishment, Heyman
38:02You ought to be sent to the island of perpetual tickling
38:05Along with anyone else who dares scheme against my queen and her family
38:15No!
38:29So Heyman got what was coming to him
38:32And then some
38:35And Mordecai, this is my favorite part
38:38He got Heyman's old job
38:39The number two guy in the whole kingdom
38:42Not bad
38:55And Esther, what a gal
38:57She showed more courage than ten kings
39:00And saved her people
39:02Now, she wasn't born for greatness
39:04She didn't go to school for it
39:06She just learned that sometimes God has plans so big
39:10Only he can see them
39:12All she had to do was believe
39:15Yup, she was just a regular kid
39:19Just like you
