00:00My Outro For My 20th Birthday
00:30I'm Sam Morton, reporter for Sussex World and I'm delighted to be joined by lifelong
00:36Albion fan John Campbell, who has released a spirited new song called Superfab celebrating
00:41Brighton & Hove Albion's manager Fabian Herzela. John, who has been a fan of Brighton & Hove
00:45Albion for 71 years, was moved to write the lyrics for Superfab after watching Fabian
00:50Herzela's first press conference. So it's a pleasure to have you on the show John, what
00:53can you tell us about the new song?
00:55Oh it's a pleasure to be here Sam, it's lovely. First of all, it was a very joyful experience
01:02because I'd never done anything like that before, you know. I watched Fabian's first
01:12press conference after he'd been unveiled to the press and I remember being absolutely
01:17blown away by his maturity, his sense of humility, his brilliant command of English
01:27was great. But there was just something about him, you know. And I came off and then suddenly
01:35all these words started to come into me and I thought well I'll write these down, so I
01:38wrote them all down. And I thought yeah, this would be great. I'm a great positive, I'm
01:45a positive energy coach really, that's what I do. And I know that positive songs have
01:51an uplifting effect on everybody, you know. So I thought well I'm certainly not a musician,
01:58never have been, but just by asking and I was led and guided to two lovely guys in Holland
02:06and they're musicians who had made a similar song for Max Verstappen, obviously being Dutch.
02:15And what's interesting is the parallel, you see, they made this song for Max a week after
02:21he won his first Grand Prix, which was the Spanish Grand Prix, and he was only 17 years
02:26of age I think, or maybe he was 17 when he raced his first Formula One. But anyway, he
02:32was only very, very young when it was the first win he'd had in the Grand Prix. And
02:38they made this song called Super Max and it went bang, Max went bang, you know. And
02:46it was very similar, you know, everybody was lauding him because he was the youngest ever
02:50person ever to make his debut in Formula One at 17 and all these similarities. And I thought
02:56wow, this is interesting. And then the person who led me to these people was a guy who came
03:07to work for my wife and I as a workaway in Spain. He used to be a member of this group
03:12and then he had a big change in his life. He left the group and I contacted him. I said,
03:17listen, young guy, are you still friends with him? He said, yeah. I said, look, I've just got
03:21these words that have just happened to come to me. I'd like to make a song to welcome this guy
03:26because I think he's a special guy. I think he really has got some, you know, real power about
03:32him. So he sent me the lyrics and I sent them to him and he came back and said, yeah, they'd love
03:38to do it. And that's when it all started. And making it was fun because I'd never been involved
03:44in that. You know, my part was filmed by my wife alongside the Falmer Pond and they did their bit
03:52and the way they put it all together, it was fascinating how they did it, yeah. But the point
03:56is, it's not about me, it's really them. They're the guys who sang it. I just mind it.
04:04But the words intrigued me because I didn't think about it consciously. But one of the lines is,
04:12oh, here we go right to the top, you know. And then I thought, wow, that came out months before
04:19they played their first, even their friendly game. But anyway, after their first two matches,
04:25they were top. So, yeah, it's a bit of fun and hopefully it'll give a lot of people some joy.
04:31That's fantastic. I mean, what it was like being involved in the production of a music video? You
04:35say it's very new to you. So what was that experience like? And you even had a cameo
04:39appearance as a commentator in it as well, didn't you? Yeah, well, it was quite challenging because,
04:45you know, I thought, well, I have to mind this. And they said, no, don't mind it. No,
04:49no, you mustn't mind it. So what happened was I had my AirPods in. I had these crazy blue
04:56wigs on, which they insisted that we had. Then my wife had the tripod with my phone,
05:05which they told me how to set it up. You know, I didn't know anything about 4K, 30 and all this. So
05:10they showed me how to do all that. And then my wife had the, because they'd already made the
05:15song by this time, they'd made the audio clip. So I had to listen in my AirPods to my wife's phone
05:24playing that into my ears. And I had to sing. I actually had to sing the words because he said
05:31to me, Rob said to me, don't mind it because it'll be terrible when we try to put it on.
05:35He said, you sing the words, you know. And of course, in my head, I'm thinking,
05:38but I've got such a lousy voice. But of course, that doesn't matter because that's all cut out.
05:43And that's just superimposed. And of course, there we were at the Thelma Pond and we had all,
05:48because we used to live right beside the Thelma Pond. And all these locals were going past
05:56watching me with this blue wig on. They thought I was crazy. So yeah, it went far wrong.
06:01Well, that's fantastic.
06:02It was a lot of fun.
06:03Yeah, I bet it was. I bet it was a lot of fun, fun to do. And as you say, it's such a positive
06:08song, isn't it? It's really catchy. And I guess it would really kind of be a brilliant song to
06:12hear at the Amex. So is there any expectation or likelihood of it potentially being played at the
06:16Amex one day?
06:17Well, yeah, I'd love it. But again, it's not about me. And it's about getting people to
06:22understand the power of energy. I mean, I'm a metaphysician in a way. So that means metaphysicians
06:30beyond the physical, you know, the understanding of the power of words and songs. I mean, it's
06:38fascinating when you get into this stuff. It really is. And how that can manifest things,
06:42you know. So yeah, I mean, I'd love it to be played. I mean, the time to play it would be
06:47just when the players are warming up, you know, so lift everybody, lift the crowd. And if you have,
06:52you know, my old mate, I call him my old mate, because he's one of my greatest teachers,
06:56was Albert Einstein. I loved Einstein. I loved how he came into all these theories and that.
07:03But you know, he said all those years ago, everything is energy. And if everything is
07:08just energy, everything is possible. So if it's energy, it has a vibration. And you know,
07:13if you think about it, how often you use the term, oh, I get good vibes from this person,
07:18I get good vibes from that restaurant or from whatever. And what's vibes mean? It's short for
07:23vibration. Yeah, so everything is vibrating, everything is vibrating. And the higher the
07:29vibration, the more positive the outcome of the situation. So if you're in fear,
07:36your vibration drops. If you're in joy, your vibration raises. So that was a whole idea is
07:41to get people up, you know, because I love this club. And I mean, I think it's so well run these
07:47days. You know, they're amazing people, the Bloom family who have been fortunate to know for what,
07:5267 years now, I was at school with Ray Bloom. That's Tony's uncle. And you're talking about
08:00real football people, real Brighton fans, both of them, you know. And that's why the club is in such
08:06good hands with Paul Barber there. So I put their names in as well. I was just a bit disappointed.
08:12I wanted to get David Weir's name in as well. But I couldn't fit it in anyway, because they're a team,
08:17you know, it's like everything. There's not just one man. But I think, yeah, I'm very excited about
08:24Superfab. I think he's, I really think he's got something, just like Supermax.
08:30Yeah, well, exactly that. And that's what I was gonna say. I mean, what have you made of the
08:33start of the season under Hazard? Obviously, brilliant wins at Everton, Manchester United,
08:39and then obviously a really creditable draw as well away at Arsenal.
08:42Absolutely. I mean, you know, Everton is a tough place to go to. And they, you know,
08:46everybody thinks of them being in the doldrums at the moment, but they had a pretty good end
08:50to last season. And, you know, they whacked us 5-1 at home, I think, last season. But that was
08:57a really tough place to go. It's not the nicest of stadiums, you know, the crowd's very close to
09:01the pitch. And one of those old-fashioned, good old-fashioned English stadiums, their last year
09:05there. And then Man United, I mean, that was wild, you know, to score the winner in the last
09:13bit. It's always the best way, isn't it? And then, of course, at Arsenal as well, you know.
09:18So we've got two home games now after the initial international break. And, yeah, we win those two.
09:24And, you know, it's not a bad haul of points. I think that's the time. I think that's what'll
09:29happen is every time there's a great result, we pump the song out and give it some welly.
09:36FAT, FAT, FAT, SUPER FAT, FAT, SUPER SUPER FAT, FAT, FAT, FAT, SUPER FAT, FAT, SUPER SUPER FAT, FAT, FAT, SUPER FAT, FAT, SUPER SUPER FAT, FAT, FAT, SUPER FAT, FAT
09:52Willkommen Fabian is now a seagull, in blue and white, he looks so regal. He's gonna get
10:00the A-max rocking, all-out attack, to hell with blocking. Just like he did at Gondolz and Pauly,
10:10he'll get the big boys feeling poorly. Scoring goals is always his story,
10:17everyone knows we're going for glory. Oh, here we go, straight to the top,
10:25Fab is his name, cause he never flopped, to hell with his age, he's been here before,
10:32raking all records, cause they're just a bore. Oh, here we go, straight to the top, Fab is his name,
10:41cause he never flopped, to hell with his age, he's been here before, raking all records,
10:48cause they're just a bore. It's the most amazing sound, everybody can hear them,
10:52they're all lifting themselves up, they're so excited, and the team are going round with
10:56them now, and they're going crazy, they love it, they love this new man, he's gonna take them all
11:01the way, they're all the way to go, they love him all the time.

18:21way he's similar to Hazela is the defensive sort of focus and making sure to sort of attack
18:28with long balls from what I've seen with McKenna and sort of just going all out of attack in
18:35that aspect of the game, same as Hurley. So when they do get opportunities, but in terms
18:40of the way that they play, it's not as attacking as the Zerby when he came to Brighton and
18:49he was doing an all guns blazing sort of approach, which worked really well for us in a lot of
18:55games, but other games maybe not, especially a big game. I think Albion's fans would agree
19:00with that would be when we lost quite heavily to Roma away. I think in that first leg, I
19:07think that was a big one where maybe if we'd set up our side a little bit differently,
19:12weren't as attacking and focused on that sort of defensive side of things as well, maybe
19:16getting a, you know, maybe a one nil loss or even a draw or just something to tide us
19:21over into that next game, we could have had a completely different story and even more
19:25of a fairytale run in the Europa League. But no, both managers really quality and very
19:32balanced, level headed. I think that they're quite diplomatic as well in their approach.
19:37They're quite good with the media. And I think that this will be a really interesting match
19:41up to see obviously with all the rumour mill going on and him not going to Brighton and
19:47signing a new deal to see what happens.
19:49See what happens. Yeah, no, for sure. And both managers have been backed, haven't they,
19:53in the transfer market. I read something recently that, you know, Brighton where they spent
19:58massive, you know, £200 million in the summer window, the highest net spenders in the Premier
20:03League. And I think surprisingly Ipswich were second. So to see those two, you know, up
20:09there is quite remarkable. And one of the major players that Brighton brought in,
20:14Jorginho Rutter, he came on in the last 10 minutes or so against Arsenal. I think he
20:21might start this one because Jal Pedro, he played for Brazil in midweek and he's got
20:27a long flight back from Paraguay after their World Cup qualifier. Do you think Rutter's,
20:34with bearing that in mind, Sam, do you think Rutter will start against Ipswich?
20:38I think everything does point to a first start for Rutter, actually, in this game.
20:41You consider, as you mentioned, that jet lag for Pedro, I would be surprised. And this
20:45just goes to show the importance of squad depth, really. And this is why Brighton smashed
20:49the cash in the summer to make sure their squad is as deep as it can be. Because that
20:53was one problem last season was when they had some star players out, it was a real challenge
20:57to try and try and replace them and to still play at the same level despite having so many
21:01players out injured. And I don't anticipate that being such a problem, barring a disaster
21:06if everyone's getting injured at the same time. But I feel like they are really well
21:10positioned now to challenge on all fronts. And having someone like Georgina Rutter to
21:15come in for his first start is brilliant, really. And obviously, you've still got Evan
21:19Ferguson to come back, who obviously made an appearance for the Republic of Ireland
21:23after a long injury. He'll be looking to get back to what he was doing before his injury
21:30and start scoring goals again. But I think this is a game for Rutter. And I'm really
21:34excited to see what he can do in his first start because he netted eight goals and claimed
21:39an impressive 16 assists for Leeds last season. He was brilliant in the championship. And
21:44one of my mates is a Leeds fan, and he was among those absolutely gutted that he was
21:48leaving. He just said about how he just brings the fans off their seats and really kind of
21:53excites the home crowd. And I think it's quite a talent. There's not many players who can really
22:00do that. And I've not heard such praise for one player in terms of just how much they can excite
22:04fans just when they go on the ball. And you kind of have that sense of anticipation of what he's
22:08going to do next kind of thing. So I think that really does bode well. And I hope he has a good
22:14start in Brighton Shirts. We've seen him in a couple of substitute appearances, but we've not
22:18seen anywhere near the best of him yet. So yeah, really excited to see what he can do.
