00:32 - Hello and welcome to latest TV news.
00:34 My name is Sam Morton and I'm going to be speaking
00:36 to reporter and Brighton fan, Henry Bryant,
00:39 about Albion's enthralling 3-2 win at Nottingham Forest
00:42 before we look ahead to the huge Europa League match
00:45 at AEK Athens and league matches
00:47 against Chelsea and Brentford.
00:49 First, here are the top stories from across the county.
00:52 Plumpton College has announced
00:53 it has permanently excluded two students
00:55 following reports of a sheep being killed
00:57 near Ditchling Beacon.
00:59 Early this month, Sussex Police said the incident
01:01 was understood to have taken place
01:02 on the night of Thursday, November the 2nd.
01:05 Police said two men from Kent, age 20 and 18,
01:08 were arrested on suspicion of causing unnecessary suffering
01:11 to a protected animal and criminal damage.
01:14 Police said both had been released on conditional bail,
01:17 adding that two others linked to the investigation
01:19 were being treated as significant witnesses.
01:21 Police are appealing for witnesses
01:23 following an assault in the high street
01:25 during the Lewis Bonfire celebrations.
01:28 The incident happened outside the Pelham Arms Public House
01:30 at about 7.40 p.m.
01:33 A man suffered an injury
01:34 after being assaulted during an altercation.
01:37 Officers are investigating the incident
01:38 and are appealing for witnesses
01:40 or anyone with information,
01:41 such as mobile phone footage, to come forward.
01:44 The suspect is described as a white man,
01:46 aged about 18, six foot,
01:48 and was wearing a red and grey jacket.
01:50 Information can be reported to Sussex Police online
01:52 quoting serial 1240 of the 4th of November.
01:56 An Eastbourne man who threatened a driver with a machete
01:58 has been jailed after DNA from his saliva
02:00 was found at the scene.
02:02 Thomas Powell, 28, of Woburn Way, Eastbourne,
02:05 has been sentenced to a total of two years
02:07 and nine months in prison
02:09 after he chased a vehicle
02:10 and caused damage to it with a weapon.
02:12 Police said the saliva located on the victim's car
02:15 positively identified Thomas Powell as a suspect
02:17 and he was arrested on the 23rd of February.
02:19 He was later charged and after trial in September 2023,
02:23 was found guilty.
02:24 At Lewis Crown Court on the 30th of October,
02:27 he was sentenced to 33 months imprisonment
02:29 in order to pay a victim surcharge of 190 pounds.
02:33 Pupils and staff are celebrating
02:34 at a St. Leonard's Primary School
02:36 after it was rated as outstanding by off-state inspectors.
02:39 Ark Little Ridge Primary Academy
02:42 was given the highest rating in all areas,
02:44 namely for the quality of education,
02:45 behaviour and attitudes, personal development,
02:48 leadership and management, and early years provision.
02:52 They really value how staff treat them as individuals.
02:54 There are warm, supportive relationships
02:56 between staff and pupils across the school.
02:59 As a result, pupils flourish and are aspirational
03:02 in all aspects of their learning.
03:03 Brighton and Hove Albion have been honoured
03:05 with a prestigious award this week.
03:07 A special council meeting was held
03:09 at Brighton Town Hall on Tuesday,
03:10 where members voted to give
03:11 Brighton and Hove Albion Football Club
03:13 the freedom of the city.
03:15 The ceremonial award recognised the club's achievements
03:17 and their contribution to the city.
03:20 It comes as the Seagulls prepare
03:21 for their penultimate group stage game
03:22 of this season's Europa League
03:24 at the home of AEK Athens in Greece.
03:26 Albion are competing in Europe for the first time
03:29 in the club's 122-year history,
03:31 after finishing sixth in the Premier League last season.
03:34 Finally, a new cafe has opened up in Meads Village
03:37 and offers a menu with something for everyone.
03:39 Wren's Kitchen opened its doors last Monday
03:41 and has already been welcomed by the community
03:44 with open arms.
03:45 Serving home-based cakes, bread and daily specials
03:48 alongside an inclusive menu,
03:49 the establishment has everything a cafe should be,
03:52 according to owner Wren Ezak.
03:54 Wren, who opened his first cafe in Worthing in 2008,
03:57 decided to start his new endeavour in Eastbourne
03:59 after making the town his home three years ago.
04:02 The cafe is a passion project for him
04:03 and was inspired by the desire to have somewhere
04:05 for my kids to hang out after school.
04:07 I have Henry Bryant here with me now
04:14 to speak about Brighton Hove Albion's 3-2 win
04:16 at Nottingham Forest.
04:17 It was obviously their first win at Nottingham Forest
04:19 since 1979 and puts an end to Brighton's long,
04:22 winless run in the Premier League.
04:23 So, Henry, how brilliant was that win on Saturday?
04:26 - Well, I think that it was brilliant
04:27 that we managed to get the win
04:29 in terms of the way we got it,
04:31 with a few incidences that happened in the game.
04:34 It was something that we didn't really need,
04:37 but at the end of the day, look,
04:38 we've managed to destroy that winless streak
04:41 and it's something that we can now look forward to
04:44 and kind of bring into these long games
04:47 that we've got coming ahead.
04:49 - Yeah, it was obviously a really busy schedule
04:51 coming up in December.
04:52 So, how important was it to really kind of put
04:56 those bad performance, well, not bad performance,
04:58 but bad results behind them
04:59 and to really kind of get back
05:01 into the form of winning games?
05:04 - Well, I think that at the international break,
05:06 you could tell that we needed it.
05:08 We looked tired.
05:09 We looked a bit leggy.
05:10 Coming into this, we still had a whole host of injuries
05:14 from key players, players coming back as well,
05:18 like Lewis, Dunk, that we'll talk about
05:20 in just a minute, I'm sure.
05:21 But also the fact that we were able to win
05:26 in the fashion we did from one behind,
05:29 Anthony Alenga, in the third minute,
05:32 causing us to kind of be really shaken
05:34 from the very start away.
05:36 And yeah, to come back from that
05:38 shows a real heart and determination
05:40 that we know we've always had,
05:42 but just to get that result through was a big one for us.
05:46 - Yeah, and when you consider the players
05:47 they have injured, suspended,
05:49 when they went one-nil down,
05:50 you kind of probably fear the worst at that point.
05:52 I don't think there was a lot of optimism
05:53 going into the game,
05:54 considering the players they had missing.
05:56 So when you go one-nil down,
05:57 I guess it was just really concerning from that point.
06:00 So how brilliant was it that they bounced back,
06:02 got a really quick equaliser through,
06:04 Evan Ferguson, and then obviously then carried on
06:06 to get second and third goals as well?
06:09 - I think that it's amazing
06:10 that we were able to do that as a team.
06:12 I think that Nottingham Forest are a side
06:15 that have been improving recently.
06:17 I mean, the game they had before the international break,
06:20 they lost 3-2 to West Ham away,
06:23 but they put in a really good performance
06:25 in an unlucky goal.
06:27 They conceded right at the end,
06:28 it was the 88th minute on that game.
06:31 So they're a team and a side that have a lot of fight,
06:34 they've got a lot of quality players.
06:36 So for us to make sure that we've kind of
06:40 destroyed any doubts and kind of got rid of any nerves
06:43 that we might've had from the start of the game
06:46 where we came and conceded,
06:49 it's something that we can be proud of
06:51 and look forward to kind of using
06:53 in games where we really need it.
06:55 - And the victory sparked wild celebrations.
06:58 As soon as the whistle went, Roberto de Serbi
07:00 went sprinting off to the away fans,
07:02 and it was amazing to see
07:03 and really kind of great to see that kind of passion.
07:07 But he has had a little bit of stick,
07:08 including from Steve Cooper,
07:10 as he didn't shake the Forest manager's hand.
07:12 How do you see that?
07:13 Do you think de Serbi maybe should have shaken the hand
07:16 before running off to celebrate?
07:17 How do you see it?
07:18 - Well, I know that Roberto de Serbi
07:20 is a very passionate man,
07:21 but at the same time, there's also sportsmanship
07:23 and there's also respect.
07:24 So I think that perhaps he should have shook his hand first
07:29 and then kind of gone on with the wild celebrations.
07:33 But those celebrations themselves were absolutely insane.
07:36 It was bonkers to see how excited we were getting.
07:40 I'm not sure from a Brighton perspective,
07:43 they should have been overly celebrating in the crazy sense
07:47 because it was a win at Nottingham Forest.
07:50 This wasn't the big six.
07:52 This wasn't a Europa League must-win game.
07:54 It was a game that we kind of expect to win in a sense,
07:58 but it did mean a lot because of the way that we did win it
08:01 and the way that we did come back
08:03 and the way that we showed that we're a side
08:05 that has resilience and has that quality about us
08:08 to kind of turn poor performances at the start of a game
08:11 into a really positive one at the end.
08:13 - Yeah, well, absolutely.
08:14 And I suppose the fact of the way they won the game,
08:18 the injuries, suspensions,
08:19 and also the red card to Lewis Dunk
08:21 probably factored into that celebration at the end
08:24 and kind of all the adversity they faced.
08:26 And just on that red card, how did you assess it?
08:29 Do you think Lewis Dunk was a bit silly
08:30 to be able to get two yellow cards in quick succession
08:33 for obviously being offensive to the referee?
08:35 - Well, I think the rules are the rules
08:37 and if you're offending the referee,
08:39 then he's got the right to give you a second yellow,
08:43 unfortunately, because that is how
08:45 the officiators do it these days.
08:48 So in my opinion, it was deserved,
08:51 although it was a really silly one.
08:52 He's meant to be the captain for us.
08:54 He's meant to be the person we look to
08:56 to kind of set an example,
08:58 especially with a lot of young players we've got.
09:00 So, yeah.
09:01 - And Evan Ferguson got on the score sheet,
09:05 Rizal Pedro, obviously they were the players
09:06 that sealed the win in the end.
09:08 How brilliant are they, two young players?
09:10 How much of an impact can they have on Brighton season?
09:13 - I mean, they're already having a massive impact
09:15 to be fair, absolutely massive impact.
09:17 I mean, you look at Rizal Pedro,
09:19 how clinical he's been in recent games,
09:22 how he's been able to kind of keep cool
09:24 when it comes to a penalty situation.
09:27 He's been converting really well.
09:29 You've got Evan Ferguson in the Premier League,
09:31 he's now got six goals.
09:32 And as a 19 year old man, he can be very, very proud of that.
09:36 He's got a few goals as well for his country.
09:38 So, yeah, he's someone that has a lot of confidence
09:41 building up every single game.
09:43 And we need those sort of fearless, ferocious players
09:46 that are young and hungry
09:48 and ready to take the Premier League by storm,
09:50 and they're doing that.
09:51 - Thank you, Henry.
09:52 And after the break, we'll be looking forward
09:53 to Brighton's upcoming games
09:54 against Athens in the Europa League
09:55 and Premier League matches against Chelsea and Brentford.
09:59 (upbeat music)
10:01 - We're now looking ahead to Brighton's upcoming games.
10:12 Firstly, against Athens.
10:15 Obviously a really tough game for Brighton.
10:17 They're in a great position in the Europa League group
10:19 with a win all but confirming their place,
10:22 or would confirm their place in the knockout rounds.
10:24 But it's not gonna be easy away in Athens
10:26 with 12 players out injured
10:28 and it was already a difficult situation
10:30 before the Nottingham Forest game,
10:32 made only worse now by Antu Fati picking up an injury.
10:35 Obviously Lamptey went off in the first half
10:37 and he was making his long awaited return.
10:40 So with 12 players out,
10:41 how do you see Brighton coping in this game?
10:44 - Well, I think that we're gonna be very nervous
10:46 at the start because if we look back to our first game
10:49 in the Europa League, at home to Athens, we did struggle.
10:53 And I think that came from it being
10:55 a completely new experience.
10:56 But the fact that we've got 12 players out
11:00 and a lot of players are gonna need to step up
11:03 for this game, it's such an important game
11:05 and we're all gonna know that,
11:07 especially the players and the manager.
11:09 It's gonna be a nervy start, I think.
11:11 I think it's gonna be a nervy start.
11:13 I think we can do it.
11:14 I think that it will be a hard fought victory
11:17 if we do end up beating them,
11:19 similar to the Nottingham Forest game that we've just had.
11:22 So yeah, something tells me that we're gonna have
11:26 to really fight to get this win.
11:28 Luckily, Lewis Dunk will be available
11:31 because although he has got that two-match suspension,
11:35 that's in the Premier League, luckily.
11:37 So it seems like we're gonna have a key leader
11:41 back in the team 'cause we've only just having him
11:44 back anyway from being injured.
11:45 So I think that'll help cool the nerves in defence.
11:49 But in attack, let's just hope that we keep our heads
11:53 and are consistent on the night
11:54 because they've got a great atmosphere at Athens ground.
11:57 So yeah, we'll see.
11:59 - Absolutely.
12:00 And you obviously mentioned Dunk will be available
12:02 despite his red card and De Hoogh as well.
12:04 He's obviously still serving his suspension in the league,
12:07 but will be available in Europe.
12:09 So it's two boosts for Brighton.
12:10 They have those two players available.
12:12 And do you think in these circumstances,
12:13 a point will be a good result to kind of solidify
12:17 their place in the knockout rounds
12:19 or to make it still very possible in the final game?
12:23 - Well, I think that a point seems realistic,
12:27 but in truth, I think we need the win.
12:29 I think we need the win there.
12:31 On paper, the weakest team in that group,
12:34 although we're kind of coming into this game
12:37 slightly wounded with the lack of players
12:39 that we've got 12 players, it's quite a ridiculous one,
12:43 but it would be some feat if we can get that victory.
12:47 So it's up to the boys, really.
12:50 I think De Zerbe's gonna kind of prepare them nicely.
12:53 He knows what to do.
12:55 And the fact that we did get this win
12:57 was against Nottingham Forest, that was,
13:00 is something that we can kind of bring into this game
13:03 and go, look, we've had adversity.
13:05 We've had decisions go against us to an extent,
13:08 and we've had players out that we didn't need
13:11 to be out at this point in the season,
13:12 a crucial part of the season.
13:14 So if we can do this, it would be great.
13:16 - Yeah, and obviously not sure if Anti-Fatty
13:19 will be available.
13:20 So how much kind of onus is there on Evan Ferguson
13:22 to really stand out?
13:24 It was great seeing him back in the goals
13:25 against Nottingham Forest.
13:26 It was obviously a superb finish.
13:28 And he's been probably a little bit injury-prone this season.
13:32 He's been out for quite a number of games,
13:34 but he looks sharp again.
13:35 So how important will he be against Athens
13:37 and as we look ahead to this really busy schedule
13:40 in December?
13:41 - Well, I think he's a young man
13:42 with an experienced striker mentality already.
13:46 So for us, that's such a lucky player to have,
13:50 that's such a key player to have for us.
13:52 I think that he can make a big difference in this game
13:55 if he plays it right.
13:57 I'm not sure how De Zerby will line up for this.
14:00 He might play slightly defensive at the start
14:03 with the one striker up top.
14:04 But if he does play with two,
14:06 with João Pedro and Evan Ferguson,
14:08 I think that those two could be the difference, really.
14:12 We need them to be the difference.
14:13 And in terms of Evan Ferguson,
14:16 he's someone that at 19 years of age,
14:19 proven that he can score on the Premier League stage
14:23 and also the stage of international games.
14:26 So let's see if he can get one in the Europa League
14:29 as he hasn't got one just yet.
14:30 - What's your score prediction for the Athens game?
14:32 - I'd like to say 2-1 to Brighton.
14:36 I feel like Athens will score first,
14:40 similar to the Nottingham Forest game.
14:41 It will be an early goal.
14:43 But I think that we'll end up getting one before halftime
14:46 and then it'll be a cagey affair
14:48 until sort of the 70th, 80th minute
14:50 when the game starts to open up
14:52 and we start to put our De Zerby ball, hopefully,
14:55 into play and get that winner.
14:57 - Yeah, do you kind of hope they learn a little bit
14:59 from the home game where they did kind of concede
15:02 from set pieces in that game?
15:03 And it was kind of a first game in Europe, wasn't it?
15:06 So they didn't really know what to expect,
15:07 but I think they really weren't missing
15:08 Lewis Dunck on the night.
15:09 So having Lewis Dunck back to play Athens this time
15:12 must be a huge boost.
15:13 - Oh, it's massive.
15:14 It is massive.
15:15 The set piece, it was two set pieces actually, wasn't it,
15:19 that we conceded by were things that I think
15:23 Lewis Dunck could have dealt with
15:24 because he is that leader in our team
15:26 and he's someone that you can kind of look to
15:29 when that sort of situation brews.
15:32 He's someone that will be so important on that game
15:36 and we just have to wait and see.
15:38 It's really exciting, but also nerve-wracking
15:40 from a fan's perspective because we've got that,
15:43 you know, the amount of injuries that we've got,
15:45 but we've also got someone like Lewis Dunck
15:47 that is a Brighton boy, a local Brighton boy,
15:50 and yeah, we'll see.
15:51 - Yeah, and it's obviously a quick return to action
15:54 after Athens.
15:55 You were at Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday
15:57 where Brighton had a bit of success of late,
15:59 had a superb win there last season.
16:02 Julio Cicero scored the winner on that day,
16:05 but he won't be obviously available
16:06 with his long-term injury.
16:07 So how do you see that game going?
16:09 Obviously Chelsea come away from a bit of a bruising defeat
16:12 against Newcastle, 4-1 defeat.
16:14 So they'll probably be looking to bounce back.
16:16 So how do you see that going for Brighton?
16:17 - Well, I think that everyone kind of thought,
16:19 okay, Chelsea are coming back into things
16:21 because they'd been picking up a few wins
16:24 and kind of showing their quality
16:27 in some aspects of their game of recent,
16:29 just before the international break.
16:31 For them to come back from the international break
16:34 and lose in that fashion to Newcastle
16:36 sort of shows that there's not as much consistency
16:39 as we might've thought would be happening,
16:42 leading up to this part of the season
16:44 to the end of the season.
16:45 So for Brighton, I think it's just capitalising on that
16:48 and knowing that we can get a result there.
16:51 As you know, they've got a plethora,
16:53 almost a smorgasbord of players to choose from.
16:56 So for them, injuries don't really play a massive part
17:00 because of the depth of squad that they've got.
17:02 So for us, I think it's a matter of
17:05 making sure no one gets injured in the Athens game
17:08 and also coming away with hopefully a victory
17:11 and then marching ahead onto that.
17:13 But that is an idealistic point of view.
17:16 This game against Athens is gonna be a battle,
17:19 in my opinion.
17:20 So let's hope that once that is over,
17:23 whatever the score is,
17:24 we can put on a good show against Chelsea.
17:27 And I think it'll be a game that
17:30 might not go in our favour, we'll see,
17:32 because of the injuries
17:33 and because of the importance of games coming up.
17:36 So, yeah.
17:38 Great. And Lewis Dunc, obviously we've mentioned,
17:40 we'll miss that game and he'll miss the Brentford game.
17:42 Do you concede Brighton coping with that?
17:44 We're still unsure if Igor will be fit
17:47 after finding out that he picked up an injury
17:49 and couldn't play against Nottingham Forest.
17:50 So if both of those players are out,
17:53 who do you see starting in defence at Chelsea?
17:55 I think it'd be Van Gecke.
17:57 It'd have to be Van Gecke
17:58 because of the quality that he's shown,
18:00 in particular in the Europa League game
18:03 we had recently against Ajax,
18:05 where we won 2-0.
18:06 And he just showed his quality at such a young age.
18:10 It's the fact that we have this amazing talent
18:14 from young that makes us some team
18:17 that is kind of always brewing up new quality,
18:20 always able to find a way out of difficult situations.
18:24 I mean, you look at what Brighton have done
18:26 in the past few years,
18:28 we've kind of turned into a defensive team,
18:30 to an all-out attacking team,
18:32 given our small budget compared to the big six.
18:35 You'd have to argue that we've done a tremendous job.
18:39 So I feel like players like Van Gecke
18:42 will definitely have to provide
18:44 some sort of quality on the day.
18:46 Yeah, absolutely.
18:47 I mean, who do you see partnering here?
18:48 Obviously with Webster potentially out,
18:49 Igor out, Dunk out.
18:52 It's a really tough defensive situation for them.
18:54 We obviously don't know about if Lampsey's going to be back.
18:56 So do you think players might have to reshuffle
18:58 and play out of their comfort zones
19:00 to be able to get through this game?
19:02 And obviously Brentford as well on Wednesday.
19:03 Yeah, potentially Tarek Lampsey, to be honest.
19:06 We'll see. We'll have to see.
19:08 It's one of those situations where De Zerby
19:11 has been able to shuffle his team accordingly
19:14 and it's worked.
19:16 For example, Milder for us,
19:18 he's been playing in defence some games.
19:21 So he's been able to do that.
19:24 So I'm sure that in terms of finding
19:27 a centre-back partner for Van Gecke
19:29 in that sort of game will be OK.
19:32 But it's just a hope that players like Webster,
19:36 who could be coming back from injury,
19:38 we're not sure just yet.
19:39 I think the same with Milder and Lampsey,
19:40 we're going to be unsure on as well.
19:42 So, yeah, just really hope that by these games coming around,
19:45 you're hoping that some of these players are back fit
19:46 to be able to cope with it.
19:48 It's almost like you need a magic eight ball to shake
19:50 and get a wall baby fit and ready
19:52 because we just don't know yet.
19:53 We just don't know.
19:54 And it's probably a slight worry for De Zerby,
19:58 but he knows that the games that he's got coming up
20:01 kind of overshadow that at the moment.
20:03 He needs to focus on these games coming up.
20:05 And most importantly at the moment,
20:07 the game on Thursday against Athens away.
20:09 Yeah. And obviously after Chelsea,
20:10 back at home after two away games,
20:13 back at home against Brentford.
20:14 How do you see that one going?
20:15 Obviously another really tough game.
20:17 I think that they play in a similar way to us.
20:22 I mean, last season there was a few battles going on.
20:25 High scoring games, that wasn't last year.
20:28 Absolutely.
20:29 And I think that it's going to be one of those games that
20:33 it's so hard to predict because of the fact that we've got
20:37 such a limited amount of players in our squad right now.
20:40 De Zerby has repeatedly said that his team is not ready yet
20:43 to play in Europe and in Premier League
20:45 and keep the same level of performance.
20:47 So the fact that they've got all of these injuries
20:48 to contend with as well, it would be remarkable, wouldn't it?
20:51 If they were to pick up three wins or even a draw in two,
20:54 and be able to go without a defeat in these three games
20:58 in such quick succession would be incredible
21:00 when you consider every situation they've got against them.
21:03 Absolutely. I think if De Zerby celebrated us winning away
21:06 at Nottingham Forest, if we got three wins in three
21:09 from these games coming up,
21:11 he'll probably streak the pitch or something like that.
21:14 I don't know what he'll do, but I think that it's some run
21:20 of games that you think, all right, he's already said,
21:23 like you mentioned, that we're kind of struggling
21:25 to keep consistent performance in Europe
21:29 and also in the Premier League.
21:30 So with 12 players out, we can only hope,
21:34 we can only hope as Brighton fans that we can get the three
21:38 victories, but we'll see. We shall see.
