00:00Normally a serene California ski area, the mountains east of Los Angeles have
00:05been engulfed by particularly menacing summer wildfires. Dozens of mountain
00:11homes burned as Southern California was hit by a brutal heat wave with
00:15temperatures well into the 40s. Steep mountain terrain adding to the challenge
00:20for firefighters. The speed of the fire's spread shocked many residents.
00:27It's devastating coming back to the neighborhood because I heard we lost 40
00:30homes and this one just came so fast I don't think I don't think anybody was
00:33prepared to move as fast as it had come which you know unfortunately led a lot
00:39of people to leave their belongings behind and get out with what they could.
00:43Three separate wildfires in the region have burned more than a hundred thousand
00:48acres. It's the height of wildfire season in California and this year the state
00:53has seen nearly three times as much area burned as in all of 2023. Authorities
01:00have arrested one man accused of setting what is known as the line fire
01:04which is still active. Based upon the investigation in terms of the charges
01:09the suspect's vehicle was in or around all of those areas at times in which the
01:15fires were started. In a positive turn for firefighters continuing to battle
01:20the blazes the weather did cool down Thursday offering some relief but tens
01:25of thousands of people can't yet return to see if their homes are still standing.
