Starmer claims ‘productive' discussion with Biden on Ukraine
Sir Keir Starmer and Joe Biden met for two hours in the White House to discuss strategy on how to bring the war in Ukraine to an end.

Starmer confirmed after the meeting that no final decision had been taken about arming Ukraine with long-range missiles for use against Russian targets but said the question could be finalised at a meeting of world leaders at the UN general assembly in New York on September 22-23.

00:00Well, we've had a long and productive discussion on a number of fronts, including Ukraine,
00:05as you'd expect, the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific, talking strategically about
00:10tactical decisions. This isn't about a particular decision, and we'll obviously pick up again
00:15in UNGA in just a few days' time with a wider group of individuals. But this was a
00:21really important invitation from the president to have this level of discussion about those
00:26critical issues.
00:27But with President Putin threatening war with NATO, aren't you creating the impression
00:32that he's intimidating you?
00:33Well, there's only one reason we're having these discussions, and that is because Putin
00:37has illegally invaded Ukraine. And the quickest way to resolve this, obviously, lies through
00:45what Putin actually does, because it's for him to end this. But we are having the discussion.
00:51We've stood with Ukraine. Ukraine has a right to self-defence. And we've stood united,
00:57not just with our allies here in the US, but across with our NATO allies. That's very,
01:02very important to us. But today was about having a chance to talk not just about a particular
01:08step or tactic, but the strategy in relation to Ukraine. But also, we cover the Middle
01:13East in some extensive detail, and other areas across the world. So it was a really important
01:18occasion for us to have this chance to discuss with our allies. We've got another chance
01:22a week after next in UNGA, and we'll take that as well.
