Millions of motorists admit they've driven when 'dangerously tired' - and have even nodded off.

A poll of 2,000 motorists found a whopping 86 per cent have been in control of a vehicle while tired at some point.

Nearly one in 10 (eight per cent) have had a near-crash due to getting behind the wheel when exhausted.

And 41 per cent admit they’ve powered on to their destination despite feeling heavy-eyed.

The research was commissioned by insurance firm Allianz [https://www.allianz.co.uk/], which also conducted a scientific study which found motorists are twice as likely to drive unsafely when tired.

00:00Hello, my name is Paul Ripley and we're here today with Allianz at this marvellous
00:06off-road driving centre. We're going to look at driving safety, driving competencies
00:11with two types of drivers, those that are fully rested and those with a lot less sleep,
00:16potentially two hours. The exercises consist of reaction time, judgement, judgement of
00:21distance, speed, car control, ability to spot hazards, to scan, to interact with other people
00:27generally, all the skills that a driver depends on day-to-day.
00:30Morning Kitty, how are you? I'm going to shout stop.
00:34OK.
00:38Stop.
00:42That's a good one, isn't it?
00:45Quite interesting that you're going for the handbrake.
00:48That's not good.
01:12Left.
01:14Going, going. Left.
01:17Oh God, sorry.
01:19OK, better time, but wrong side.
01:26It's obviously highlighted skill differences, reaction times and the decision that people
01:31make once they've had time to react. So it's not just the length of time, but the quality
01:36of the decision. Asked if they feel OK after their performance, the people who were sleep
01:42deprived felt quite confident in what they'd done. So their perception is often not quite
01:47reality. And this is an experiment really should help everybody recognise the signs
01:53of fatigue and take them seriously. You should never drive tired. It's all about safety.
