We are live at Gillette Stadium for "Patriots' Monday"! Patriots lose to Seahawks, 23-20, in OT. How do you feel after the Week 2 loss?
Transcript
00:00The New England Patriots got oh so close to being 2-0 yesterday, right here, Curtis, right here yesterday.
00:08That one hurt. Rough weekend. Everything about the weekend prior, Courtney and I were giddy that Monday morning with the BC win, the Notre Dame loss, the Patriots win, was the same, but more aggravating because both teams started out really hot.
00:23Like, the 7-0 drive with Jacoby Brissette in this offense, you're like, oh my god, this might be it, and it was so demoralizing.
00:32Wiggy and I were talking pre-show about, you get to the 21-yard line, it's 3rd and 6th, you have been conservative all day long, all year long, through two games, you drop back, you lose 10 yards, then the field goes blocked, and then it goes to overtime and you lose.
00:50Don't you still feel pretty good, though?
00:52Like, you feel better than you thought you would feel after two weeks?
00:55I mean, because they're in, they're going to be in games like this, I mean, this is one that a lot of people penciled in prior to the start of the season as a win, so.
01:06We're back to, back to moral victory Mondays.
01:08I mean, it's moral, that really doesn't do much for me. It might do something for some people.
01:14I think a month ago, if somebody said to you, you guys are 1-1 after two weeks, you'd be like, alright.
01:19But you can't be, you can't look at it like that, because you stole, you stole one from the Bengals.
01:24So, I just, you know, you end up with the opportunity to win that game in overtime, and you get another dumb formation penalty.
01:33They, they don't, I don't, they have zero confidence in Jacoby Bursette throwing the football, or who he's got, or maybe it's zero confidence in who he can throw the football to, minus Hunter Henry.
01:45It just, I don't know that you're going to be able to win every single football game by, by pounding the ball, like, you know, running the football every single week.
01:54I don't think you can win in the league week in and week out that way.
01:57But that's what this roster is.
01:59So, Jerron Mayo is coaching it the only way that you can with Alex Van Pelt.
02:03There's, look at the receivers.
02:04I mean, we watch the games all across the NFL.
02:07The Seahawks, not a great team, but they have two elite receivers.
02:11Metcalf is a great player.
02:13Jackson Smith Njigba, is that how you pronounce it?
02:15Yeah.
02:16The receiver from Ohio State.
02:17He's a really good player.
02:18Very good shifty guy.
02:19But you don't know what you have at wide receiver.
02:21You got Jalen Polk, which you don't know.
02:24Javon Baker, which you don't know.
02:26Paul Douglas, who's been, I mean, where is he?
02:29WITSEC program?
02:31I'm, Witness Protection Program.
02:33He's healthy.
02:35You know, I don't know what KJ Osborne is.
02:38The, the fact that.
02:39Not very good.
02:40But we don't know because you're limited to what your team is,
02:45what your quarterback.
02:46You don't push the ball downfield.
02:48I know we'll probably get into a male talking about it,
02:50but there's no deep in routes.
02:52There's no deep crosses.
02:54There's no deep comebacks.
02:56Everything is, you know, five yard turnaround,
02:59stick route to Hunter Henry or quick screen
03:01or something like that.
03:02The screens were awful yesterday.
03:04It's just, it's, you don't know what you have when it comes
03:08to receivers because you don't give them an opportunity
03:11to see if they can make plays.
03:12Well, but are they not?
03:14Is Alex Van Pelt not giving them the opportunity
03:18because he has no confidence in Jacoby Brissette
03:21throwing the football?
03:22Or I would say yes, or he has no confidence
03:25in those wide receivers or, you know,
03:28that's the, his version of the West Coast offense
03:31that he brought.
03:31And he's going to, that's the plan.
03:33And he's going to stick with it.
03:34Well, that's the game plan that Gerard Mayo told us
03:36that it was going to be last week.
03:38He said, we're going to run the football.
03:39That's what we're going to do.
03:40And he brought up Ramondre Stevenson
03:42and can you rely on him over and over again?
03:44And we saw Gibson step up.
03:45Then he went on to say that once the, you know,
03:48their opponent had figured that out,
03:50they had other things that were, you know,
03:52they were going to launch.
03:53They don't have anything else to launch.
03:54But everything, all things being equal,
03:56if they make that field goal,
03:58then they win the game and they're two and O.
04:00I mean, it's, it's.
04:02Yeah, but you can't go back and do that.
04:04But when I, but what I'm saying here is like,
04:06all the things we were worried about this season
04:09from training camp haven't manifested themselves.
04:12They're not, they're not undisciplined.
04:14They're not, they're actually entertaining to watch.
04:16Nobody's in every game, but nobody's saying that.
04:18But I think what Curtis is saying is if they come away
04:20with a win in that one, we're like,
04:22Oh, maybe they can win these games by not.
04:24But the thing is they didn't like,
04:26you could do that in every game ago.
04:27Oh, well, if you know what,
04:28you can't do it in every game.
04:29If they got blown out in that one,
04:31then it would be a different Kansas city in Cincinnati.
04:33If they don't call pass interference on an awful call
04:36on the, on the defensive back,
04:38Cincinnati probably wins that football game.
04:40They could, you could do the same thing.
04:41If they don't call the defensive pass interference,
04:44defensive pass interference on,
04:46well, you couldn't do that with the Cowboys game last year.
04:48You couldn't do that with the Saints game last year.
04:50You can go through multiple games.
04:51The, when we look at this game and you start to say
04:55this team, can they win football games?
04:58Yes, we know they can run the football.
04:59We know they can play great defense
05:01and they can get after it.
05:02But the problem is you got to get to a point in times
05:06in games where you got to be able to throw the football
05:10and you have to throw it downfield.
05:12And when I say downfield, I mean, 50-yard bombs,
05:15but you have to be aggressive in the sense
05:16we're going to take shots that are longer than 10 yards.
05:20They just can't do that.
05:23And I think it's because they don't have the confidence
05:26in the quarterback to do that
05:28because all the receivers are new and young.
05:31So, but they're out there playing.
05:32Yeah, no, that's what it seems like.
05:34And we will, we'll get to talk to Gerard Mayo
05:37about that and everything else here this morning
05:40on a Patriots Monday.
05:41Gerard Mayo will join us at nine
05:44as the Patriots go to one-and-one
05:46and it's a short week.
05:48So you're back at it on Thursday night
05:50with the New York Jets.
05:51And they, they ended up winning a football game yesterday.
05:55So Aaron, Aaron Rodgers, engineers a drive
05:58end of that game to win the, to win the football game.
06:00Yeah, I would say Aaron Rodgers should take a page
06:03from another New York great, Derek Jeter
06:05and send a gift basket to Will Levis.
06:08Well, yeah, he got some help.
06:12But that's a game where you get the right help
06:14and then your quarterback makes plays.
06:16I know Rodgers didn't throw for 300 yards,
06:18but he threw two touchdowns.
06:19You're going to be in a position.
06:22What's this look like?
06:24Great defense, run the football.
06:26Can't really throw the football further than 10 yards.
06:30What's this look like?
06:31The Brockton boxers.
06:32No, no, no.
06:35This looks like Mac Jones and the Patriots.
06:37Oh, we look much different than we did with Mac Jones.
06:40No, no.
06:40What were our complaints last year?
06:42The, when the games were close,
06:44the complaints were the inability to throw the football.
06:47Well, he was throwing the ball.
06:49He was just throwing it away.
06:51But nobody was saying this yesterday though.
06:53What do you mean?
06:55Nobody in the fourth quarter of yesterday's game
06:57was harrumphing about the inability to throw the ball.
06:59Because you had an opportunity to win the game.
07:02Right, that's what I'm putting.
07:03But the Mac games, Mac was gyrating on the field.
07:07I'm not talking about his gyration.
07:09I'm just talking about when we complained last year as a team,
07:11we always said, hey, we can run the football.
07:13We can play good defense, but we struggle in the passing game.
07:16We weren't even in those games though.
07:18Last year with Mac Jones,
07:19it was a completely different situation at quarterback.
07:21Like I looked at that yesterday.
07:23I don't put the entire loss on Jacoby Brissette.
07:25Like I think Jacoby Brissette handled himself,
07:27didn't make mistakes.
07:29His ability to escape was unbelievable.
07:31It was so different than Mac Jones.
07:33I'm not putting the loss on him.
07:35It kind of seems like you are.
07:35No, no, I'm putting the loss.
07:37No, it's not.
07:38No, it's they don't have confidence in him
07:40when it comes to throwing the football.
07:43But they had him drop back on third and five
07:45when they were already in field goal range
07:47to try and ice the game away.
07:48I mean, that was confidence in that spot.
07:50But what I'm saying is I'm not blaming Jacoby Brissette
07:54for this game.
07:54I'm saying when you look at this team and the way
07:57this is another week where he's averaging,
08:00he averaged 5.5 yards per pass attempt.
08:03This is another week where he's on the seven yards
08:08per pass.
08:10So when you start to look at this team,
08:13you start to say they can play defense.
08:16They can run the football.
08:17They could probably stick close with a lot of teams,
08:19but the issue is going to be, like it was last year,
08:22however you want to shake it up or juggle it,
08:25the issue is going to be their inability to throw the football.
08:28I think you saw it in the end of the third quarter,
08:33like six minutes left, they went to a series
08:35in which they tried to throw the football
08:37three straight times in a row and failed.
08:40Right.
08:41And so I just don't listen.
08:44Yes, I agree with Courtney and Curtis.
08:47You're in a game and you had a chance to win a game
08:49and so maybe that makes you happy.
08:51I just don't, if that's the way it's going to be every week,
08:54you're going to face much better football teams,
08:56including, I think, on Thursday night,
08:59who you did not have penciled in as a potential win
09:03at the start of the season.
09:04How many wins did we expect this team to have this year?
09:06Well, I was under four and a half.
09:08So I mean, they're one and one.
09:10I think they've outscored their opponents
09:11in total through two games.
09:15I don't think they're going to be favored to win Thursday night
09:17and they shouldn't be,
09:18but I would not be shocked at all
09:20if the Patriots have the ball in the fourth quarter
09:22with a chance to win the game.
09:23And this is the ground floor of a rebuild.
09:26The team is, the offense is the 32nd ranked
09:29when it comes to weaponry.
09:30The offensive line, the players that we thought
09:32would be great are hurting them the most
09:34on when you was awful yesterday.
09:36I mean, I don't understand how that happened,
09:38but I think Thursday night,
09:40it's going to be a close game, one possession.
09:42And then maybe week five, you see Drake May.
09:44Yeah, I think that, yeah,
09:45I think you're trending towards seeing Drake May
09:49sooner rather than later, just because of the way
09:52I think things are shaking out, Curtis.
09:54You're right where, you know, you'll be,
09:56and that's why I think you'll always,
09:57this team is good enough to keep you around games
10:00because of their defense
10:01and your ability to run the football.
10:02So you'll always be within striking distance.
10:04The question is when you are within striking distance,
10:07can Jacoby Brissett make those plays,
10:10throwing the football further than 10 yards
10:13that you're going to need?
10:14Well, we are at Gillette Stadium.
10:16It is a Patriots Monday after a loss
10:19for the New England Patriots.
10:20And we'll talk about that with you all morning long.
10:24We will also talk about it with Boomer Esiason
10:27coming up at eight on this morning show.
10:30And then, as I mentioned earlier,
10:31the head coach of the New England Patriots,
10:34Gerard Mayo will be on this show at nine.
10:38Why is that so hard?
10:40I don't know.
10:40It's driving me crazy.
10:42It was Boomer did it last week.
10:43And then during that entire game yesterday,
10:46those guys were saying Gerard over and over and over again.
10:49It's Gerard.
10:50It's not Gerard.
10:51Maybe national media thinks we're all saying Gerard
10:54with a New England accent.
10:56Maybe. Maybe that's what it is.
