03:42You
03:46Darren boss what forgot body in the tree been there some time
03:51Dog walker she got quite a shock
03:53Who's that? Oh woodland ranger says tree was diseased reckons. It was uprooted in last night's storm
04:00Wendy oh, this is a first we don't get many of those what if you got
04:05Female in the people position secured with rope and placed deep in the hollow of the tree
04:11Do we know how she died most likely asphyxiation her hyoid bone is fractured common in cases of strangulation
04:19Why tie her up if she was already dead?
04:22The body needed to be made as compact as possible in order to fit the diameter of the hollow
04:28As you can see it would have been a tight squeeze
04:32Now I suggest she was killed in situ then tied while the body was still warm well before rigor mortis setting
04:39How long ago
04:42It's hard to tell without further examination, but judging by the degree of decomposition
04:48I'd say it's years not months as the body is mostly skeletonized
04:54Do we know who she is
04:57We found this in her coat pocket credit card belonging to a mrs.
05:03Km. Hadley a cappie Hadley went missing six years ago getting the case files now here is the SIO
05:09Jean Dixon
05:14This was Jean's case, I think she should be involved
05:17So ask her how tried she won't take my calls you across the case at the time
05:22She might talk to you. Oh come on Paul. I mean she's still blaming me for the Harbin inquiry
05:26Yeah, I'm spoken to it since she blames both of us Ridley, but under the circumstances listen
05:33Jean Dixon manipulated a child murder case to get the result she wanted and I called her on
05:38So I'm not about to walk
05:40Apologize to make somebody else's life a bit easier. I'm sorry. No the answer is no
05:59Okay team let's gather round, please
06:03I
06:11Never a team player
06:26Okay, so
06:29The body of the woman found in the tree is believed to be Kathy Hadley a woman reported missing by her husband David Hadley in
06:37March
06:382018 the marriage was unhappy and the team concluded that she left of her own accord
06:44Not wanting to be found
06:46But she was from Danebridge shouldn't West Riding be handling it the body was found in our patch and we were across the case at
06:51The time if I may
06:53Jean Dixon was the SIO
06:55She always thought there was more to this case
06:59However with little evidence
07:00Nobody she hit a brick wall. She then reached out to us to try and widen the search, but sadly we couldn't help
07:07Their insight could be invaluable
07:10Definitely. What do we know about the husband?
07:13David Hadley failed to report his wife missing for six days, which was viewed as suspicious
07:19Though there was nothing to suggest foul play any kids
07:23Daughter Sam 13 at the time and according to Jean Dixon deeply traumatized still lives with her father at the same address as
07:32This is now a murder investigation. The spotlight will be turned back on him. So let's get to it. Yeah
07:39Thanks for changing my name, yeah, let's see how we go
07:52You
07:59Hello Jane, you're trespassing
08:04Try calling
08:08So first good win and now you I am honored
08:12Whatever it is. The answer's no the Kathy Hadley case. They found a body
08:18You got a chance of solving it
08:29He threw me under a bus look you put me through hell my reputation
08:38But somehow I have managed to claw my way back to normality
08:43Hello
08:45Hello
08:46Ross Enderby
08:48Alex Ridley old colleague of Jean's
08:51Okay. Yeah, I will be
08:55At least just leave him. Look Jean. All I'm saying is you got close to the family got close to the daughter Sam
09:02We've got a chance of bringing this person to justice. I think she's made herself perfectly clear
09:07Well, look if you won't talk to me
09:09Is there someone you'll talk to it's nothing to say
09:15You
09:27Can you tell us about the last time you saw your wife
09:32She said she'd be home for dinner she was two hours late we had a massive row I
09:37Went to bed and when I got up at 6, there was no sign of her
09:41I
09:43Got female cop she never believed me Jean Dixon. Yeah, that's her. She had me down as guilty from the start
09:49We'll take nothing for granted. I promise you you only reported a missing six days later
09:55Why is that?
09:57She told me the next time she left. She wasn't coming back and I believed her
10:02When she didn't ring for Sam's birthday
10:05Something didn't feel right
10:07She might not love me. She bloody loves Sam
10:11I
10:16Excuse me, please
10:24You okay love she's not dead
10:28She can't be I
10:30Understand it must be hard to accept. Hey, Sam
10:36Is there anything you want to tell me away from you dad
10:40I
10:45Know
10:55See you next week
10:59Yeah
11:00It's dropped in to tell the guys that won't be in for a couple of days. All right. Okay, you're on a case
11:07Yeah
11:09What's going on here, yeah, well, we're just going through the accounts and
11:14It's not good news. I'm afraid
11:17Shouldn't you've talked to me first? Yeah. Well, I've tried loads of times
11:22We're in serious trouble
11:24Our overheads have doubled. We're losing money hand over face
11:28Nothing to do with your fella here coming in and helping himself to the single mortgage every time he walks into the room
11:34It's alright for you
11:35You've got your dream house and you and your consultancy and your big fat pension I have sunk everything I've got into this place
11:45I see
11:53We found this
11:55pushed deep into her esophagus
11:57Used either to hasten her end or to stop erasing the alarm
12:01Isn't the same rope used to bind a body?
12:04It looks like it. Oh, yeah, we're seeing if we can identify a specific brand. Okay. Thanks, Wendy
12:10I'll call with any further updates as soon as I have them
12:17How'd you get on with the family
12:19David Hadley holds ultra responsible for failing to solve the case the first time around
12:24Specifically Dean Dixon says that she has his wife's blood on her hands. All right could be a smokescreen. What about the daughter?
12:29She seems very closed off. I reckon she's holding something back
12:32So where do we go from here to interview David's brother Andy? He was last person to see Cassie alive. Okay
12:43So your brother's wife Cassie
12:45Where was the last time you saw her exactly outside the council building as I told the police at the time
12:52And what was she doing there?
12:56Getting into a car with another man
13:00I didn't recognize him and she didn't see me. So that was a full two days after she was last seen at home
13:07That's right
13:09David hadn't even told her she'd gone so I didn't think anything of it. She hadn't been happy for some time
13:15David's always been a bit of an introvert
13:17Depressive and Kathy. She was full of fun the party girl
13:22Which made David jealous?
13:24Well, we never doubted Kathy had left to start a new life, but the community was suspicious he had something to do with it and
13:32Sam was struggling. So I stepped in to support her
13:36David's drinking was becoming a problem. I
13:39Suggested they move away, but Sam wouldn't hear of it. The house was the only connection. She felt she had left with her mother
13:46So she stayed is there anything else you can think of that we should know about?
13:51No, I think that's it
13:55She seems a bit cagey, yeah, well, maybe the community was right, you know, there's no smoke without fire
14:01We know that David Hadley was viewed as a suspect at the time
14:05But there was no evidence to back it up. Hmm
14:08Maybe Jean was on to something
14:12Yes, Darren
14:15Okay, right
14:17I
14:19Thanks me I
14:21Knew Sam Hadley was holding something back. Um, but whatever it is, she'll only tell Jean Dixon
14:39I thought I've made myself clear
14:41Yes, but Sam Hadley has come forward with some new information
14:46I've left all that behind me
14:49Yeah, but this is information she's never told anyone before and you're the only one she'll talk to
14:54Come on, Jean. You remember all those conversations we had about how traumatized you thought Sam was why you'd do anything to help her
15:01Well, she's asking for that help now and you're the only person she trusts
15:06If I say yes, it's for Cassie and Sam
15:10It's not you understood. Yeah completely completely. I'll see you at the house
15:24Who was that
15:27Molly cars broken down needs a lift
15:31Cars broken down needs a lift. I thought you got a friend who could help I booked a table at the barley mow
15:39She's that's a panic and I knew the guys in the garage so
15:44Well, why don't I drive you then then we can still have lunch it's a quick fix
15:49Why don't we postpone till tomorrow and see my keys of you?
15:55If you jump every time Molly calls she'll never learn to stand on her own two feet
16:01I
16:03Know but we had plans to meet later. Anyway, so it's no big deal
16:10See you later
16:14David's gone into work to ask for time off. Someone had to be here for some do you know what this is about?
16:22Hasn't said a word to me. She's been waiting for you
16:26I
16:29Like some pity Alex Ridley our police consultant
16:36I'll tell you what. Why don't I talk to your aunt here and give you a bit of space?
16:42How's that? I make some tea
16:45Do you mind if I sit down there sounds fine?
16:51That's Kathy she was beautiful wasn't she
16:55Then we're always drawn to her
16:58Some people just have that thing, you know, yeah, it's very like Sam
17:04Let's hope she has a happier life
17:10The last text was sent on my birthday six months ago the body they found has been there for years I
17:17I
17:19Mean we'll get these texts checked out, but there is no doubt about it. I'm afraid
17:25The body has been formally identified as your mother's
17:29No
17:31She's out there. I know she is
17:34I'm really sorry son
17:37But whoever sent these it wasn't your mom
17:41And it's all my fault, of course it isn't no you don't understand
17:48I had the chance to save it, but I didn't
17:53Can you tell us about the last time you saw your mom
17:59We had a horrible fight
18:02Mum told me she was leaving
18:06I went mad said she never put me first. It was always some man
18:14Told her
18:17She should never have had kids
18:21They've had me
18:23So what happened then?
18:28I went to bed. Well, I couldn't sleep
18:34Heard her
18:36Talking to someone on a mobile
18:39On a way out
18:42Must have been around 2 a.m. I
18:45I followed her out of the back gate onto the lane
18:54I could see where she was from the light on her phone
18:59But then I lost it
19:03Why didn't you tell us any of this at the time
19:09Dad would pay me for driving her away
19:11Hate me for it
19:16He was all I had left
19:20And the text changed everything so who sent in those texts
19:25Is it the fellow that Andy had early saw in the car? Is he the one who's trying to convince her that her mom's still alive?
19:32So cool
19:34I mean David Hadley used to check Kathy's phone. That's why she used a burner to cover her tracks
19:39It was never found. What did you make of him at the time?
19:42Thought he was lying through his teeth and he knew it. Yeah, he's definitely bearing a bit of a grudge
19:47He told Carol that he still holds you responsible for not solving the case in the first place
19:52You're loving this, aren't you Ridley?
19:54Jean screws up again, you know, that's not what I meant. I came to speak to Sam
19:59Bob done if you could just come to the briefing Jean I wouldn't ask if it wasn't really important fine, but after that I am out
20:06I
20:11Really appreciate this Jim, it's just cut the nice it is shall we I'm only here because I'll be useful to you. Excuse me
20:22Okay, everyone if you just want to
20:24I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry
20:29I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry
20:31I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry
20:33I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry
20:35Everyone if you just want to gather background and for anyone who doesn't already know
20:39This is Jean Dixon as SIO on the original case
20:43We just thought it might be good to get Jean's take on how events happened at the time
20:48What would you like to know well
20:51David Hadley was a suspect at the time. Can you talk us through some of the reasons why?
20:57Well, it's failure to report Kathy missing was a red flag and he seemed unnaturally calm
21:03Lacking in emotion, but with nobody no evidence
21:08We had to accept his version of the truth and you didn't believe him. No frankly, and he resented that
21:15How was Sam at the time?
21:18Traumatized
21:19Withdrawn but she was always incredibly protective of her father. She has to speak to you earlier. Why was that?
21:26Sam and her father had always maintained that they were both asleep when Kathy had left home
21:32But Sam now claims that she heard her mother talking on her mobile phone around 2 a.m
21:38She assumed she was arranging to meet a man
21:42So when her mother left the house
21:45Sam followed her
21:46You know hoping to catch them together
21:50But once outside she quickly lost sight of her
21:55Why didn't she tell you any of this at the time? Well, Sam started receiving texts that she believed were from her mother
22:02Messages dating from a few days after she went missing to as recently as six months ago text checking the phone out now
22:09So if Sam believed that her mother was still alive
22:12Why keep it a secret?
22:13Because the text made it clear that she didn't want to be found that Sam should tell no one not even her dad
22:18And they made her believe that her mother would be in danger if she did that Sam should just hang tight
22:24And her mother would come and collect her when she was ready. So she waited so we need to know who was Cassie calling
22:32And did she meet them and where and if the person who's sending Sam the text is our murderer?
22:38What is it? They're trying to achieve right? I'm arranging a press call for tomorrow morning. Hopefully we can jug a few memories
22:44Good luck everyone
22:49Oh
22:53Jim
22:57Thanks, Jim, I've kind of been easy
23:03Sam was the same age as Molly desperate for me to find a mom and bring her home, which I failed to do
23:14Ridley
23:15Will you keep an eye on Sam for me?
23:19You
23:36How things with your dad stay out of his way as much as possible and his obviously
23:43You
23:45Can still come back home, you know, three's a crowd whichever way you look at it
23:50Thinking about going traveling. Okay on your own
23:56What's wrong with that
24:00Hang on
24:02Hey
24:06Dinner's almost ready
24:09I'm it's Molly. I told you yeah, you said drinks
24:13I've made paella
24:15Awful
24:17All right. Never mind. It's it's a
24:22It's obviously crosswise it'll it'll freeze
24:25We're still in the bar, so
24:28I'll come home. You sure? Yeah
24:34I'll see you in about 20 minutes
24:40Thought we're going to the pizza place
24:43We were I have messed up
24:47So sorry, yeah, okay fine, whatever
24:52You know, why don't we do it again and we'll make a proper plan?
24:59You know if you just gave us a chance and got to know him better
25:03Thanks would be so much easier. I think I do know him mom. I'm just not sure you do
25:13Oh
25:21The summer time is coming
25:28The trees are sweet
25:33And the wild mountain
25:39Rose around
25:44Well
25:53Together
25:59All around
26:04Well, you go
26:13Hmm
26:16Yeah, you know, I mean I've been thinking about what you said about the club and the fact that it's in trouble and all that
26:22and I
26:24Understand I understand
26:28Thanks, I suppose I'm just
26:33Anchoring for the old days, you know
26:36How far back do you want to go?
26:38Way back way way back to when the night that you me and Kate got so drunk. We bought a jazz club
26:47Yeah, the bank were mad to give us that loan
26:51And Kate, you know finding all that furniture at the auction
26:55Well, we painted the place. Yeah drunk half the bar at the same time. Well, we were never very
27:01Business-minded. Well, I know but it was all ours. We put it all together you me and Kate
27:08Well, that's why we've got to try and do everything we can to keep it going
27:19Harry thinks he can help. I know you're not keen but just hear what he has to say. Yeah
27:39Look I I overstepped the mark earlier telling you how to handle Molly
27:52I'm in other people's kids. I know it's not easy
27:58Anyway, I felt guilty isn't
28:01If I'd known you'd promised a dinner I wouldn't have
28:04Anyway
28:07I'm here now
28:10Smells lovely. I
28:13Really like Molly I hope you know that I
28:17Just wish she'd give me a chance
28:20No, she's had me to herself for a long time. So
28:25Did you actually get it sorted
28:28Molly's car. Yes. Well, did you forget that too?
28:31No, the garage of them sorted it and yeah
28:36Nothing serious. No, that's good. And I know it must have been hard
28:42Saying no to the case
28:45But you did the right thing leave the past where it belongs
28:51It's all about us now
28:53You must be starving I know I am do you need me to do anything
29:07No, you stay right where you are
29:23I've been looking into the knots used to tie Kathy Hadley's body. They're very distinctive intricate indicating some level of expertise
29:31But there's something far more exciting
29:36When we sifted through the debris from the hollow
29:39we found this I
29:42Believe it's a dove symbol of peace love and freedom
29:46The fixing is a hook rather than a butterfly so easily dislodged as both areas were pierced
29:52I imagine it's one of a pair
29:54So, where's the other one?
29:59This earring was found with the body
30:02it's been identified as belonging to Kathy Hadley and we believe it is part of a pair if
30:09Anyone remembers seeing or finding one like it, please do get into it. Thank you
30:14We'll take any questions after we've heard from Kathy's husband David
30:18I
30:21Thought to Samantha and I never gave up hope that one day Kathy might walk back in through the door
30:30And now we know she never will
30:38But now all we can do is try to bring whoever took her from us to justice
30:47So, what are we thinking well, he's saying all the right words, but where's the emotion
30:54Any results from the appeal a few calls from some neighbors that don't pay David Hadley in a very positive light
31:00I'll look into those any joy from the text to Sam Hathaway. Not yet. Whoever sent them made them hard to trace
31:06Sam is David Hadley's alibi for the night. Kathy went missing. We know how protective she is towards her dad
31:13We can talk to her but I think we're likely to get closer to the truth if James there
31:21Middling, yeah, okay good
31:33I can't talk for long. Yeah, I wouldn't be calling him. It wasn't important
31:37We've got some concerns about David Hadley just like you did
31:40We think that Sam knows a lot more than she's letting on and I'm going up there now
31:44I just know that she'd be a lot happier if you were in the room
31:48Okay
31:51No, I'll meet you at the house, okay
31:54way after
31:57I'm just nipping into town. I'll come with you. I think you were gonna go for a walk
32:03Well, we can go together when you get back
32:10You
32:29We're okay, you fancy I actually want to know why I've got a girl. Oh, you'd rather play with mummy would you?
32:35obviously, but
32:37You know, I can't really just ditch it now didn't you mean it it's one of them like I'm only joking me
32:43We'll give you a lift
32:59Thanks for coming Jean I can't stay long
33:07Just want a quick word with Sam not her she's not even a copper anymore. You've got some nerve coming back here
33:13I don't want you anywhere near my daughter. It's okay
33:26So when you left the house to follow your mom
33:29Where was your dad?
33:31Asleep in his room, so he didn't wake up
33:35His door shut and was the door still shut when you came back
33:45So you didn't actually see your dad in the room I didn't see him now
33:55But he asked me to tell the police that
33:58I
34:01Need to take a look at that garage. Can you cover for me Sam? I think I forgot my car keys. Okay
34:07I
34:23My bag all along losing the plot
34:26She's done still about there should be
34:30that
34:32Dad mr. Hatterley
34:37Oh
35:04Sure, I saw some bin bags in here
35:08Oh
35:13You had seen them somewhere
35:16Leave me ice-tested
35:19You just tired that's all been a tough few days thought there's a Chinese
35:37I
35:44See you later, yeah, don't let me down
35:49You should have been back hours ago I had to be a judge oh I tried to black my way through the lecture with Meadow
36:12Screaming but no one could hear me
36:14So you don't need me now, is that all the apology I'm going to get I never wanted her use that you can sort your
36:20own mess out
36:22I
36:44Need to see mom she's not here. I'm afraid I'll just wait then
36:47Can we just talk for a minute, you know how your mom wants us to get on and I'm more than willing to make the effort
36:54But I'm not sure that you can just let me pass, please
36:57She's not gonna tell you this herself, but she's worried that you're still so dependent on her. You know, the constant calls cries for help
37:06Dropping by unannounced mom said I was welcome whenever which is your mom. She doesn't want to upset you
37:13But your angsty behavior is getting too I don't believe you I
37:18Know it's tough
37:20But we all have to grow up sometime
37:43I
37:45I
37:47I
38:11Thought you were going straight home I needed to get some shopping
38:15Okay, what's up in her I'm a friend this
38:19Sorry Jean
38:21But whoever did this would be called on camera. Did you see anybody?
38:24No, but whoever it is, they knew where I was and they knew my car
38:28They wanted to warn you off David Hadley Springs to mind
38:32Has he been found? No, not yet
38:39Everything all right
38:41With Ross he thinks me getting involved is a bad idea and he knows my last experience with the police wasn't a happy one
38:48Yeah, but he doesn't know you're involved, right?
38:51Ross is just trying to protect me, but I needed to do this for me and for Sam to get closure. So
38:57No, he doesn't I'm gonna have to bring this note to the station and you're gonna have to tell Ross about it because he
39:03Could be in danger Jean
39:05I'll do it when I get back, but it'll be fine
39:11They found a banana
39:41I
40:11I
40:19That's the hollow tree and that's the Dumbarton state
40:22So the fields around the estate were often used for military camps back in the day and according to army records
40:27There was a military camp in operation at the time of Kathy's disappearance
40:32The rope found in David Hadley's garage is military issue. Do you think they could all be connected? Let's go and ask him
40:41If you had nothing to do with your wife's death and why wrong I
40:46Heard Sam tell you I'd asked her to lie
40:49Needed to say goodbye to Kathy in case I didn't get another chance
40:53Why did you need it to lie?
40:56to stop everyone asking questions, but
41:01That didn't work
41:02Forensics have identified the rope used to tie your wife's body. It was a 10 millimeter nylon forces paracord. You ever been in the military
41:10Mr. Hadley only the reserves. That was years ago. Yeah
41:14Is that where you learn to tie knots like that?
41:18What's that got to do with anything? Your wife's body was tied with identical knots
41:23We understand that there was a camp near Horsley woods on the weekend that your wife went missing
41:29I'd stop going to training by then. I was at home that night with Sam. It's all on record. So why'd you stop going?
41:36I'd convinced myself Kathy was seeing someone in the unit
41:41Couldn't take the humiliation of not knowing who it was. So I bought it
41:45Neighbors report a history of rows between yourself and Kathy sometimes involving physical violence. What were those about?
41:53Kathy would go me about other men. I could never measure Rob and I just I
42:00Just lose it I
42:03Always loved Kathy
42:05I'd never do anything to hurt her, but he did hurt her. Mr. Hadley
42:10And I regret that every minute of every day
42:14But I didn't kill her
42:16You
42:30Katie seemed a bit stressed
42:36Molly cold
42:38She said she came to see me and you wouldn't let her wait
42:43Wasn't like that
42:46I invited her in but she refused but she said she couldn't bear to be anywhere near me
42:59Well, you don't believe me
43:09It's been a hard day and I have had a lot to deal with well share it with me maybe I can help
43:17You
43:18Someone left a threatening note on my car
43:22threatening, you know
43:23Wanting me to stay away from the Hadley case and that if I don't
43:28I'll come after me
43:30Now do you understand why I don't want you getting involved Oh, come here come here
43:42Everything I do is for you gee
43:46I know I get things wrong, but I'm trying
43:50Because I love you and I I couldn't live with myself if anything happened to you
43:58What's wrong
44:01It's too much I
44:06Just need some time to think you're feeling vulnerable I understand that I
44:12just think that
44:14We need some time apart no, no, you're not thinking straight
44:19You're too used to dealing with everything on your own, but I'm here now and I am NOT going to let you go
44:26So
44:38Can you tell me how the area was secured
44:41It was gated and enclosed by barbed wire fences cameras
44:45Not at that time. No, so it would have been possible for someone under the cover of darkness to slip through the fences and back
44:51Again on scene. It's possible. Yes, but all our reserve is shared tent. So there's likely there'd be witnesses, right?
44:59well
45:00We're gonna need a list of all the attendees and the possible locations. Also anything you've got on former reservists David
45:09Hadley we need to know if his ID was used to pass through security that night
45:15This period predates full digital records, so that could take some time you'll have to bear with me
45:21Yeah, no worries. No worries. Do you have a direct number? I could contact you on yeah
45:27There you go. Thanks
45:34Ah drink lovely bottle of Beaujolais
45:39Lovely bottle of Beaujolais
45:44There's something that I need to say there's no need to apologize I meant what I said earlier about
45:53Needing to be on my own for a while
45:57You've been speaking with Molly no
46:02It's
46:03me

46:10Done everything in my power to care for you to love you and you're saying what it's not good enough
46:21It's just not
46:23Working for me. I don't understand
46:26You're wanting to know where I am all the time
46:30The constant calls and you know wanting me here 24-7
46:35Well, if you told me the truth, I wouldn't need to watch you every move
46:40What's that supposed to mean? Well, you've clearly been lying to me Jean
46:45About the case of taking Ridley's calls being with him when you said that you were with Molly
46:53You've been following me well, I needed to know if I could trust you Jean and now I know I can't
47:01But look we can work on that. I
47:06Think you should go and leave you to the mercy of your psycho stalker. Don't be ridiculous. Don't worry
47:13I can handle myself
47:17Molly's been drip feeding you poison and you'd rather believe her than me
47:23Yeah, I would frankly
47:27Okay
47:30You
47:35Said you need some space
47:37Go up to your precious more and think very carefully about what you just said to me
47:42And when you get back, you're gonna apologize for letting me down and I'm gonna try and forgive when I get back
47:48I want you out
47:50I'm not going anywhere
48:00You
48:30You
