00:00Millions of pensioners won't be getting their winter fuel payment this year, due to a new means testing policy,
00:06which will see the once universal benefit cut to all but the poorest pensioners.
00:11The change is part of the government's effort to tackle a massive £22 billion shortfall in public finances,
00:17a deficit ministers blame on previous Tory administrations.
00:20The payment was once available to any household with at least one member of pension age,
00:25and as a result, around 10 million people will miss out this winter.
00:29Add to that the energy price rises expected from October, and reducing energy consumption is more crucial than ever.
00:35To help you save on energy this winter, James Longley, Managing Director at Utilitybidder, has shared six practical tips.
00:43First, check your heating system before switching it back on for the winter,
00:47making sure your boiler pressure is right and bleeding your radiators to release trapped air and keep your system running efficiently.
00:54You should also locate and fix any air leaks your property may have, such as fixing draughts around windows to prevent energy waste.
01:01You can also install heavy curtains that will keep heat from escaping through windows and doors.
01:06Consider switching to LED bulbs. These more modern alternatives to traditional incandescent bulbs use far less energy and can cut your electricity bill.
01:15Program your thermostat, setting it only to heat your home when you're there, and consider a smart thermostat for remote control.
01:23And finally, reduce unnecessary energy use by drying clothes outside when possible,
01:28especially while the weather is still relatively mild, and use appliances wisely.
